Rev. Billy Graham on Iraq:

“I’m getting a little depressed about Iraq… Think of what it is doing to Bush. There doesn’t seem to be any way out.”

Bush deserves everything coming to him

what does he expect 1 million dead for an arsehole

  2. Tobey Tall says:

    kill 1 your a murderer

kill 7 your a mass murderer

kill 1 million your a hero to 23% in America

  3. JPV says:

LOL!!! This is the funniest thing I’ve read all week.

Graham is just a senile old con artist that should have been put out to pasture years ago.

  4. Wowser says:

Sadly, it’s not doing anything to Bush. He simply doesn’t care.

  5. GSD says:

It doesn’t bother Bush one bit Rev. Graham. He’s always joking, boating, bullying, talking about how it doesn’t affect him to the rightwing media.

    -GSD

  6. osage says:

A little depressed……think how the families of the dead feel. But George W. Bush isn’t depressed, he’s energized, focused and sleeping like a baby. He’s just too damned tough to care about all the lives he destroyed and damaged. You have to have feelings to be depressed. You have to have a brain to think you should feel depressed. Bush only has an ego.

  7. bilbobaggins says:

Well, that shows you what a good Christian the Reverend Graham is. He’s worried about how it is affecting Bush. Why doesn’t he worry about how it is affecting the families of the dead and wounded? Why doesn’t he worry about the citizens of the United States who have been terrorized by Bush and his vanity war for 5 years.

Yeah, the Reverend Graham has his priorities straight.

  8. Evergreen says:

No mention of the Millions of Iraqi’s dead or exiled, just a poor little bush who happens to be responsible for it all? Not to mention the Thousands of Americans dead and wounded?

Bush is not suffering, he said he isn’t. It isn’t doing anything to him personally. He is incapable of feeling a shred of empathy. He is grinningly bushcentric.

For one who touts christianity as Billy does…that is a “curious” remark. I couldn’t think of a word to use other than curious..maybe unchristian? maybe ignorant? maybe sad? It depresses me.

  9. tarazan says:

If Billy Graham spoke loudly against this war in Iraq, don’t be surprised to see some right wingers start calling him leftist, commie and supporter of the so called Islamofascist( A new invented term used only in USA and Israel).

  10. Frank J says:

I would imagine this is the first time Billy Graham has appeared on this thing. Hey! How about those ratings for that Olbermann lead debate? Worst ever…LOL

  11. tarazan says:

    11. Frank,

What Olbermann ratings has to do with this story..?!

  12. Tobey Tall says:

152,669 veterans filed disability claims after fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. Of the more than 100,000 claims granted, Veterans Administration records show at least 1,502 veterans have been compensated as 100 percent disabled.

  13. Peter C says:

Billy Graham has more sympathy for the fact that Bush is suffering criticism than for the innocents we’ve killed in Iraq and the Americans who Bush has ordered to kill them.

  14. Tobey Tall says:

As many as 1 of every 10 soldiers from the war on terror evacuated to the Army’s biggest hospital in Europe was sent there for mental problems.

Between 8 and 10 percent of nearly 12,000 soldiers from the war on terror, mostly from Iraq, treated at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany had “psychiatric or behavioral health issues,” according to the commander of the hospital, Col. Rhonda Cornum.

That means about 1,000 soldiers were evacuated for mental problems.

The hospital has treated 11,754 soldiers from the war on terror, with 9,651 from Iraq and the rest from Afghanistan, according to data released by the hospital.

  15. Krazny says:

That would be your let’s deflect the discussion to something else.

OT. Graham should realize that Bush doesn’t seem to care to much. Criticizem seems to bounce off of Bush like water off a duck. I don’t think he cares. Bush comes across as almost sociopathic at times.

  16. celtic cynic says:

We really don’t care what it’s doing to Bush!!!

We really, really, really care what it’s doing to us, to the people of Iraq, to the rest of the world, to our children and grandchildren.

  17. tarazan says:

    #17 Mr. Big,

But the topic of discussion is not about Olbermann, it is about Billy Graham…!!

  18. Peter C says:

Mr. Big is a fictional character created to move the discussion away from the topic. In the mean time, his author seeks to belittle the issues discussed during the AFL-CIO debate by unsubstantiated and irrelevant claims about television ratings.

  19. GSD says:

“Mr. Big is a fictional character created to move the discussion away from the topic. In the mean time, his author seeks to belittle the issues discussed during the AFL-CIO debate by unsubstantiated and irrelevant claims about television ratings.

Good luck, Peter C. It’s pretty easy to see thru someone like Frank J or Mr Big and stop them from gumming up a thread. The problem is the regular posters who think its cool to call someone a “Chimpy l*g-humper” or a “Nazi b*ll-licker”. Bunch of tough guys, huh?

Of late, TP has all the ambiance of a heavily used public restroom that hasn’t been cleaned in months.

  22. Peter C says:

    GSD @ 21,

That voice from Star Wars has stuck with me for some reason too.

  23. Peter C says:

    ROS @ 23,

I think this site has a time-out feature on this comments section. Big posts often don’t get through. That contributes to the “public restroom” quality which you so aptly identify. While pithy one-liners make a quick point, the don’t add as much to the overall discussion.

  24. Peter C says:

Mr. Big’s author is trying another diversionary tactic. Don’t engage.

  25. tom says:

I wonder which “Bu$h” Billy was referring to . . . Bu$h 41 who is depressed that he sired a bunch of complete idiots with a b*tch who looks like Winston Churchill with hair or GDumbya.

He certainly shouldn’t be worried about GDumbya because he’s an active alcoholic who doesn’t have a care in the world.

  26. nofltwlt says:

This is typical of devoutly religious people – the BELIEVE whatever they wish to believe. If Billy Graham was objective he would be on the side of the majority of Americans who hate Bush, realize that Bush is an illegitimate president complements of injustice Scalia and know that Bush has squandered the health, wealth and security of our nation.

George W. Bush – the anti American.

  27. RB-Chicago says:

    Bush and Graham… both losers….

  28. Jackie says:

At lease Rev. Graham let us know who he’ s praying for. Maybe God will help protect the soldiers and the Iraqi people. Interesting to know that a Preacher who claims to be for the people is really just praying for his friends. All those years people followed Rev. Graham thinking he was praying for all the people only to find out it was just his friends. I noticed he did collect money from all those people he wasn’t praying for. Makes you wonder is there really a Minister who is really speaking the word of God or are they all fakes.

  29. Kay says:

I know. Poor Chimpy. Each day I worry how this Occupation wears on him. Oh, poor Chimpy.

    (sarcasm off, now)

  30. Russ says:

Religious people pray for their friends, Jackie. Get over it. Get over your hate of Christians.

    Comment by Trophy Hunter

Yes, and they pray for their enemies, and are supposed to turn the other cheek. Religious people, (Bush), don’t torture people. Call me old fashioned but thats frowned upon.

  31. Peter C says:

I think Taegan Goddard and Political Wire, or Gibbs and Duffy may be more at fault here than Billy Graham. This link provides very little context to what Graham actually said. These snippets are not very helpful at moving the discussion forward.

  32. Tobey Tall says:

Bush is the biggest moron in the planet, voted by morons

  33. Russ says:

If Clinton endorsed torture, it was hardly on the same scale or did try to absolve himself of all future prosecutions for such crimes, as did bush. That said, two wrong never make a right and torture, dumb ass, does nothing to stop al qeade. Stop watching 24. Go ahead and attack me personally, doesn’t matter, but you have to live with the fact there is nothing Christian about this president.

  34. Rose Tyler says:

Graham feels sorry for Bush? Maybe he really does have Alzheimer’s Disease — he seems to have forgotten about all the dead troops and Iraqi civilians.

  35. katy says:

    it’s almost impressive…
the balancing act being performed here with 3 or 4 laptops…

    a real trooll tag-team fest…

  36. Russ says:

So torture is Christian? No, no matter who does it. Torture will not help us fight al qeade. Besides what ever torture Clinton may have o.ked, he never tried to institutionalise it, brag about it, or try to cover his ass by giving himself immunity.

  37. Wilco says:

    Russ, you’re clearly wrong.
    God is a warmonger. Obviously.
And Jesus loooooves him some torture.
“Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me” wasn’t a complete quote. It actually ended “except for a-rabs”

  38. Russ says:

I though my first post was lost, hence the second one. Not surprised the trolls attack me personally, being they can’t logically or ethically.

  39. Wilco says:

“In Jesus’s name, I waterboard thee!”

  40. Rose Tyler says:

    Wilco,

    I hope you’re being sarcastic.

  41. Russ says:

I’m not Christian bashing, I’m actually offended by the fakes.

  42. Russ says:

When Clinton tortured people, Russ was ok with it, right?

    Comment by Mr. Big — August 11, 2007 @ 11:41 am

I answered that. Listen for once before you run off.

  45. Wilco says:

    Itchy, you’re an idiot
I have no problem with Christianity
I do have one with people who claim to follow the teachings of Christ then defend their actions which are completely counter to those same teachings.
    It’s hypocrisy.
    Would Jesus torture someone?
How is someone still “Christlike” after doing that?

  54. Rose Tyler says:

    Tau @ 103

    Thank you, Tau.

I would think TP would stick to their own Terms of Use, otherwise why have them?

I’ve seen where the liberal and progressive blogs are being attacked in the media. If I were TP, I wouldn’t want these threads to be taken over with such sickness. It doesn’t represent them well.

  55. barfly says:

Poor Billy Graham. All his life’s work, gone, and for what? To give comfort to a delusional kook like Bush, after he’s killed thousands with his bogus war. God’s got a hot seat planned for the “Rev.” Graham.

  60. Angry One says:

    Speaking of political preachers…

Mitt Romney may have bought today’s Iowa Republican Straw Poll, but history mercifully shows that the winner rarely ends up in the White House.

Graham acknowledges that he spends most of his time in his car, but says there’s a reason.

An extension cord runs from the house to the car, providing power for a 13-inch TV that rests in the passenger seat, an oscillating fan and a radio.

“I get better reception there than I do in there,” he said, pointing at the house. “I listen to Rush (Limbaugh) every day just about.”

No, I think all religions are batty. Including yours.

  63. Marie says:

Billy Graham has, over the years, shown himself to be a man with less-than-christian values in certain circumstances. He has, however, made quite a name for himself with his homilies, and his feel-good revival meetings, so much so that all presidents have gone to him for “spiritual advice.”
To give the devil his due, the man may be a decent person, but he is as flawed as the rest of us and it makes me angry and sad to see people bow before him as if he were the incarnation of god on earth.
Now he feels compassion for Bush – and I have to ask why? Bush has created misery, heartbreak, and sorrow for thousands upon thousands of Americans, not to mention people around the world (but Graham only feels compassion for christians).
Bush has “made his bed,” but apparently, he isn’t losing any sleep over his crimes and greed and mercilessness. He is not suffering, so why should anyone feel compassion for him?
In fact, even if he were suffering, he would be deserving.
Billy Graham is an old coot – a modern day Elmer Gantry – just like all the rest of the bible-thumping, self-righteous, vulchers who prey on human guilt for thoughts and deeds deemed as biblical “sins.”
He would have the rest of us feel sympathy for Bush, while Bush continues blithely on his way, unconcerned, remorseless, and defiant.
    Go away.

  64. Rose Tyler says:

  71. Dennis says:

I used to respect Billy Graham, but his brand of “Christianity” is just a little to apocalyptic for me. At his last revival in NYC, he talked about how “the end is near”, putting him right up there with the other nutcases of the loony Religious Right. Of course Graham is concerned about George Bush, although there is scant evidence that the war has had the slightest impact on him. (Laura says it hurts them the most, poor thing.) As far as I am concerned, they are all delusional people.

  72. Arthur C. says:

  80. Arthur C. says:

Christopher Hitchens was dead wrong about invading Iraq, but he is right about religion: it’s primary function is to extract money from the believers for the benefit of the high priests. Its secondary function is social control, via the intrument of fear. Consoling the masses is tertiary, at best.

  81. chingebush says:

I truly doubt if 85% of Americans believe in any mythology, much less the silly one with virgin births and re-incarnation. Both of those cute fables, by the way were lifted from previous pagan religions.

FISA is broken and the George W. Bush broke it. Because Bush and his cronies pushed the exisiting law too far, they ended up losing a court case and severely damaged our ability to obtain intelligence. This was the result of sloppiness and a total disregard for the rule of law on the part of the Republicans.

  85. Marie says:

I have never been a fan of Hitchens either, but he asks a good question about religion: ( I paraphrase)
Name something good that has been done by a believer in religion that cannot be done, or has not been done by a non-believer.
Now think of all the harm that has been done in the name of religion that would be condemned by all if it were not for religion.

  88. Rose Tyler says:

    Katy @ 168

I don’t get to listen to it often, so it’s a real treat when I do. I don’t know the hosts very well, but I really enjoyed the Tom Hartman show. Randy Rhodes was very good, but she talks over her guests and callers. I find that frustrating.

I’m not sure about this. One must separate those who hijack a religion, like bin laden, and use it for nefarious reasons. Most things done with religion as its cover had political things in mind. The men who went to war in 1940, did so, because they were mostly Christian and did so for a god cause.

The real problem here is that posters won’t stop directing comments to the trolls directly. You are quite correct when you point that out. I’ve managed to take control of a thread by from trolls all by myself but when just one poster shows up and starts telling the trolls to go “F” themselves (such tough guys!) it just opens the door all over again.

The endless profanity accomplishes NOTHING. The trolls win every time. It’s not about civility. It’s about stopping trolls from taking over.

They WANT TP posters to insult them. Read that again.

They WANT TP posters to insult them. It’s how they take over the conversations here. You can come here and find ONE troll getting a dozen posters to do EXACTLY what that troll wants – insult after insult.

Too many of the reg posters are far too easy to manipulate. Once you realize a troll’s comment is meaningless, DON’T try to rebutt it. You cannot successfully rebutt an irrational statement.

The trolls aren’t interested in the truth or honest debate – not one red cent’s worth. You will never “beat” a troll in a debate or by insulting them. The yget waht they want every time you try. Even the smarter posters fall for it.

If you DO NOT address the troll directly, it cannot muscle its way into the convesration. If you start trading insults or debating an irrational position, you lose.

This site is rapidly becoming a joke and it’s not the trolls doing it. The trolls only win when you let them. The trolls aren’t stealing your lunch money, folks. You’re giving it to them.

  94. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Every time you insult the troll directly, the troll wins. You guys are just too F-ing dumb for your own good.

  95. The Republic of Stupidity says:

One last thought, and then, like so many other posters, I’m gone!

The trolls are right – you guys are Surrender Monkeys.

But it just feels so good to call someone a “Chimpy l*g-humper” or a “Nazi b*ll-licker” doesn’t it?

This is what free speech is about? A level of meaningless obscenity that would make a sailor blush? Perhaps the 1st Amendment is a joke. You don’t need Bush to treat it like toilet paper. Ya’ll doin’ a fine job on your
own. Wipe away!!! Bad money always drives out good.

    You guys WANT TO LOSE!

Katy is right. A big function of Blogs is to Correct erroneous comments and information. A lot of the so called “troll comments” are not that different from the thinking of average Americans who don’t follow the news closely, and are bombarded by right wing propaganda.

    Comment by Arthur C. — August 11, 2007 @ 1:21 pm

So true. I have many conservative friends and universally they do not support Bush. Their feelings range from embarassment to outright hostility. Those who post here under the mantle of conservatism rarely are. Instead we are dealing with individuals desperate for attention. My experience her has shown that most of the regular posters are happy to hold respectful discussions with individuals whose opinions differ from their own. Problem is the idiots have gotten so out of control. It will pass

  111. curmudgeon says:

Graham was worried about what the Iraq War was doing to Chimpy? Talk about perverted priorities.

What about the hundreds of thousands of innocent lives lost in the Middle East, particularly by those who had no choice in this matter? Did they not deserve mention?

Death and destruction are not a burden for Chimpy, but rather a source of entertainment and sustenance, like that of blood to a vampire. If you doubt this, check out his record as the Executor in Chief during his reign in Texas and his comments just prior to the execution of Carla Faye Tucker.

The only potential defense for Graham’s statements is the possibility that age may have severely compromised his mental faculties.

Either that or the statement was created by the rover and inserted into his hearing aid as he was being interviewed. After all, if you can illegaly wiretap, you can surely insert whatever “reality” you want anywhere you want in the Police State of America.

That was clear a long time ago, like when he went AWOL on his ANG unit during Vietnam, or when he extended their tours and has stop-lossed over 50% of some units’ personnel. And don’t forget his great concern for the care at Walter Reed, or wanting to cut educational funds for returning vets.

Whatta guy! Bet the Repugs get 90% of teh military votes in 08.

  118. rockyroad says:

Rev. “Think how this is affecting Bush.”

Akk. Think how this is affecting thousands of Iraqis. They’ve lost their families, homes, secutiry . . . Think how this is affecting 3,000 dead soldiers’ families, moms, dads, parents, kids, friends. Think about handicapped, mentally traumatized patriots who sacrificed themselves for Chimpee’s misbegotten ego trip in Iraq. Think about the loss of American standing due to torture.

Good God Billy. How many people does this man have to kill before you see that he is evil.

Since the death penalty was reinstated in Illinois in 1977, 13 condemned inmates have been taken off death row after they were exonerated by DNA evidence proving their innocence or the cases against them collapsed after new trials were ordered by appellate courts. Governor Ryan described the death penalty system in Illinois as “fraught with errors” and “broken,” and there is mounting evidence that the situation is similar in other states and at the federal level.”

Let me think. Who was a justice on the Texas Supreme Court, overseeing death penalty cases during the Chimpee governorship of Texas? Why, that would be Gonzo!

  126. Evergreen says:

What is patriotism? (a rhetorical question)

Is patriotism waving a flag and killing the “other”?

Is patriotism support for fellow citizens, ideals, constitution and bill of rights?

Should people be patriotic to whatever country they live in…just because they were born there and live there ? Even if it is a fascist state or dictatorship?

Remember that patriotism, fear and hate were the tools used for facsist takeover in Germany by Hitler etc.

The problem of course is that patriotism is too often just an emotion and we forget to think about facts when in patriotic runamok.

People in power use our emotions (hate, fear, patriotism) to get what they want….like oil rights in Iraq and Iran. Their corporate media tells us ORANGE ALERT, You ARE UNDER ATTACK and stirs us to to an unthinking patriotic state. They use our emotional patriotism…they lie to us, and get us to kill and be killed. They use rousing music in the background and medals and manly comraderie to make it all fine.

We are not at war with any country. The “war” is an international corporate war for oil and we are being used along with the Iraqi people and the rest of this poor earth. There is nothing patriotic about destroying Iraq and our children for OIL.

  127. michael says:

“The “war” is an international corporate war for oil

    Comment by Evergreen — August 11, 2007″

That’s one of the stupidist comments you liberals have come up with in a long time! Congratulations, green? If it’s all about corporate control of oil, why didn’t we take over kuwait’s oil fields when we liberated them? If it’s all about corporate control of oil, why didn’t we take over Iraq’s oil fields during the first Iraqi invasion? It is about oil, the free flow of it to the rest of the world.

Who’s to say he doesn’t still buy into that End Times scenario, and that’s why he’s loath to criticize his most famous convert? If Bush fails, it will reflect badly on Bush’s – and, by extension, Graham’s – religiously infallibile worldview. Will Grahan confess to the sin of pridefulness, for his (in)action in stopping the war? I ain’t holding my breath in anticipation.

Laargest oil field discovered in the past centruy . . . Kazakhstan. Recall Borat.

I really don’t want to get ugly here. Russia has great oil reserves. Due to global warming, Artic reserves now appear to be worthy of exploration. Iran, not so much, particularly due to political instability. Saudi Arabia, depletion allowance, 10+ years. Norway, same.

Forget this war. Redeploy the military industrial complex to re-invent America’s energy resources. Lots of money there. Lots of jobs. All good.

  153. rockyroad says:

    Katy,

I like your posts and am a bit dissapointed that you dismiss mine. To re-deploy the military industrial complex would not only be re re-invent the manner in which we use and produce energy, it would reconsider our infrastrusture. How are our bridges built and maintained, how are our electrical lines and steam pipes build and maintained? What threats to our cables that carry internet traffic managed?

    These are critical questions.

We may be fighting a “war” in Iraq, but when the problem comes home . . . who’s watching the levees?

And a lot of people who have voted Republican in the last 10-20 years were Democrats. Secular progressives hijacked the party and moved it so far left, moderate and conservative Democrats had no choice but to vote Republican. Graham is, and always has been somewhat moderate to liberal except in areas of morality. On those issues, he is conservative. ;)

  165. upright left says:

Not to say the deceased was a sinner for being gay, but aren’t church’s supposed to be “hospitals for sinners, not museums for saints”?

My grandparents told me that a long time ago.

    Comment by numfar — August 12, 2007 @ 3:30 pm

Expecting a Christian church to hold a service celebrating a lifestyle choice that is anti-Christian? No problem with that? They would have held the service if the family wasn’t insistent on portraying homosexuality as being acceptable. Trying to force the church to compromise it’s principles maybe? ;)

  166. Later.. says:

As they say, “Bring it on”. The draft will put a stop to war. It will no longer be a poor man’s war to fight and die by. That will stop it. Charlie Rangel already espoused that idea. He’s is dead on.
