Fox: Is Rove departure a loss for Wall Street?

On Your World with Neil Cavuto, Fox displayed a chyron asking: “Karl Rove Leaving: A Loss for Wall Street?” Note to Fox: The financial markets are already in bad shape, due to volatility over sub-prime mortgage loans and other factors. And the departure of a man who helped drive the nation into long-term deficits is the least of the market’s current concerns.

UPDATE: Media Matters reports that “Cavuto frequently purports to identify possible effects on the stock market or the economy of ‘news’ stories, or allows his guests to do so, often in order to attack Democrats and progressives.”

True to form — everything is always all about them. They believe they control the tides, the rising of the sun, and the universe.

When they are distressed, everything tanks.

I work in the mortgage industry for wells fargo we have shut down over 20 subprime branches. Believe me subprime makes up more than 2% also the arm loans are now readjusting to families who are stretched too thin because of inflating heating and energy cost and they are also defaulting.

  9. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Actually, the market will probably like Rove’s exit. His policies, after all, have brought us to where we are today: a lack of liquidity not seen since 1929, the dollar historically weak, balance of trade worse than it’s ever been, the collapse of American manufacturing, the collapse of the home mortgage industry, record deficits and debt as well as being the world’s biggest debtor nation.

If anything, Wall Street might hope for some economic pragmatism instead of disasterous neocon dogma.

  20. chad says:

Conservatives always say let the market decide the market should be allowed to correct itself. Well now it is the lenders who gave out bad loans are claiming bankruptcy but government needs to remove the bankruptcy protection of corporations only have to pay off preferred lenders and can ignore employees 401k and Pension plans as this just allows corporations to cut there losses walk away with a boat load of money and start up again under a different bank name. While the individuals who received bad loans are left on the street with nothing. Why should the government give better protection to a corporation claiming bankruptcy than an individual?

  21. leftcoast says:

Comment by Homosexualsskewlib – your statement that 2/3 of Americans own stock would put alot of babies owning stock. But, even if so you may wish to factor in that 401K’s are the largest ownership of stock, otherwise individual ownership would be just about the same as it was prior to this investment vehicle. Therefore you can’t measure consumer confidence on this. There is confidence though and I hear this on what you call the liberal media. Which, by the way is a myth and repub perpetuated hoax. There is no liberal media. Look at the ownership.
And what kind of crap are you spewing about liberals hating capitalism? Man you are being fed some stuff. You couldn’t sale this even to a repub website.

  23. Vet says:

    Comment by chad — August 13, 2007 @ 5:36 pm

Chad is 100% right. The sub-prime defaults are the tip of the iceberg. Countless new housing developments went up as a result of the ARM frenzy that swept the country a few years ago. Now that the rates are going up, the middle class folks who bought more house than they could really afford (by using ARM loans) are finding themselves royally SCR*WED.

Wait another year – the sub-prime mess is just a warmup, sadly.

  24. pakaal says:

Like Chad says, the markets aren’t in great shape, they’re only in OK shape. Subprime mortgage companies defaulting, downturn in housing market, low new job growth and hedge funds tanking are some of the things bugging the market right now, and we’ll probably see more waffling in the next few months. As for Rove’s impact, well, the markets are up today. Just a coincidence, of course….

  25. leftcoast says:

ARM and sub-prime will be even a greater problem than Bush 1’s S&L crisis. He and Reagan told banking officials to lay off announcing problems until after Bush I was elected.

  26. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

chad: “While the individuals who received bad loans are left on the street with nothing. Why should the government give better protection to a corporation claiming bankruptcy than an individual?”

Damn good question, Chad. This isn’t the first time. After about 7 years of this type of governance, the Savings & Loan disaster cost us billions in taxpayer money to bail out a bunch of crooks in the late 80’s. Neil Bush alone cost the taxpayers over $1 billion. And, of course the govt. bailed out Crysler Corp.

The reason is that corporations have too much political power in our system.

Well because your govt is as bad as ours :) Maybe even worse, since I’ve always admired the brits for parts of your history. And a country which has been through 10x as many wars as America, as well as in WWII really learned what it was like to be bombed on a daily basis, and very close to be occupied in WWII, had the Battle of Britain not repelled the Nazis.

Greed, mix it up with a little ‘invented’ religion, some whipped up hatred, and only the “people” suffer.

So hurry up and straighten your country out, should something bad happen in the next year Bush will make himself dictator, we’ll lose our elections, and we’ll need an occupying force to free us!

Katy, Not many people know or remember that Rove was put in charge of rebuilding N.O. Of course when Bush announced it, it was merely to pacify the public; it meant nothing. Nonetheless, New Orleans was given to Rove to oversee.

  52. NanBullen says:

Rove helped bring about an unprecedented national debt during his tenure in office. If anything, he was an “architect of fiscal irresponsibility” if you ask me. I would think that ridding this country of him would bring elation to the market.

  56. NanBullen says:

Tobey Tall – you are right. If the dems care about 08, they’d better begin impeachment proceedings right now.

  57. VerbalKint says:

The problem isn’t just with loans classified as sub-prime. It is generally understood that mortgage lenders eased their standards for conventional mortgages as well, so these mortgages may not be as secure as previously thought.

As for the Fed pumping cash into the system, I think in the short run this is the right move and the best thing Bernanke can do. The worst thing he could do is reflexively cut rates, which is how the wildly overrated Greenspan did his share to bring us to this point.

  58. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

NanBullen: “Tobey Tall – you are right. If the dems care about 08, they’d better begin impeachment proceedings right now.”

IMO, it is because they do care about ‘08 that they are not going for impeachment. They are relentlessly trying to pass legislation over republican obstruction. They know the repub plan is to obstruct and then call them “do-nothing”. They also know that impeachment would be nothing more than a political exercise, just as it was with Clinton. There is no chance of getting a conviction. They don’t want to alienate the middle. If they get the middle, they will enjoy supermajorities in both houses and the Whitehouse. Why not press on with investigations? There’s no statue of limitations at work here. Any of them can be brought up on criminal charges after their term is over. And, if the Dems take a supermajority, their congressional term begins in early Jan, 09. They could always quickly pass an impeachment and conviction simply as a symbol during that month before Bush leaves office if they wanted.

  59. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Sorry, I meant to post “statute of limitations.”

When Clinton ended the real estate tax for the sale of your personal residence, it fueled a real estate boom and helped drive up investments and tax revenues.

Bush’s tax cuts helped create the 2nd longest bull market in history, seeing the stock market advance to all-time record highs, keeping unemployment below 5%, and helping Americans get ahead.

If the Democrats let the Bush tax cuts expire or enact new tax hikes of their own, then we will get less investments. I would expect the stock market to correct significantly and unemployment to rise.
