Karl Rove To Resign

The Wall Street Journal reports that Bush’s deputy chief of staff and senior adviser Karl Rove will be resigning at the end of the month and will return to Texas. “I just think it’s time,” Rove said in the interview. “There’s always something that can keep you here, and as much as I’d like to be here, I’ve got to do this for the sake of my family.” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said, “Obviously it’s a big loss to us. He’s a great colleague, a good friend, and a brilliant mind. He will be greatly missed.”

UPDATE: Bush was expected to make a statement Monday with Rove around 11:35 am ET. Later Monday, Rove, his wife and their son were to accompany Bush on Air Force One when the president flies to Texas for his vacation.

UPDATE II: “Even as he discussed his departure, Rove remained characteristically sunny. … In the interview, Rove predicted Bush will regain his popularity, which has sunk to record lows because of the war in Iraq.”

UPDATE III: Even while Rove has been talking about finding the right time to depart for a year, Bill Kristol never saw it coming. On Fox News this morning, Kristol said:

Karl’s departure is pretty sudden and for me, pretty surprising. … Karl Rove loves politics. He’s awfully smart. And September’s going to be an awfully big month for the presidency. It’s odd that he’s not going to be there.

UPDATE IV: Rove plans to write a book on the Bush presidency, a move which President Bush is encouraging:

He’d like to teach eventually, but he has no specific job plans, save to write a book on the Bush years, which “the boss,” as in Mr. Bush, “has encouraged me to do.”

UPDATE V: Rove said his “biggest error” was “not working soon enough to replace Republicans tainted by scandal.”

Digg It!

I’m certain Bush has guest houses on the 100,000 Paraguay ranch for all the players: Rumsfield, Rove and Cheney.

As Bush looks and sounds increasingly medicated and/or drunk nowadays, I hope the military is keeping an eye on him, so if he tries to launch a nu-qu-lawr attack on Iran or Pakistan, they’re ready to step in and arrest him.

The idea of WWIII doesn’t have much appeal to me.

  18. Christopher says:

If Rove remains in the USA and doesn’t slither off to Paraguay, he may have one more campaign left to manage.

George P. Bush, son of Jebby Bush is a newly minted lawyer and the buzz out of Florida has him running for state office in the near future.

This will provide him with a launching pad to run for president in possibly 2016 or 2020. Like the Clintons, the Bush dynasty are committed to keeping in the family.

“odd” is a tremendous understatement… here’s what a commenter at the wapo had to say…

For one of the most powerful men in the world to walk away from this position in such short order, a mere 18 days, means that there truly is something coming on down the pike. There is about to occur an event or action, which even Rove won’t be a party to. Such a sudden departure, when Bush has such little time left to serve, has President Cheney’s stench all about it. Reading the President’s under-reported directive on establishing martial law and suspending the Constitution; in light of the strengthened Patriot Act and increased domestic surveillance legislation; and the several completed military plans enabling a military take-over of state and local government makes for an alarming future. Why would all this exist if not to be used? All it takes is one incident to make the country willing to trade the Constitution for security. Maybe, this either goes too far for Rove or he’s an impediment to Cheney. This is not a simple resignation.

i would tend to agree with the thought that something big is coming down the pike, but i wouldn’t venture to speculate on what it might be…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  32. Hardy Haberman says:

Let us parse the code here. Since the Bush White House never tells the truth and speaks in krypto-neocon some translation is needed. I would suspect that the phrase “spend more time with his family”, means time to prepare his defense with his lawyers. The word “resign” in the Bush White House means fired. Finally the hasty exit would indicate that either an indictment is pending or the GOP has forced Karl out in hopes of polishing the president’s image.

I’ll wait for the actual shoe to drop later this week. Call me crazy and paranoid, but this is the start of the “exit strategy” for the inner admin… the endgame goes like this: Bush pardons everyone including Cheney, Bush resigns, Cheney pardons Bush…

I sincerely hope I’m wrong and its just cynicism. The cynicism has been correct about this Sadministration too many times for to be optimistic though.

I wish I could say that with Karl’s exit we have seen the last of his ilk. Unfortunately, the phrase “Karl Rove protege” has been used all too often over the past seven years — one example being Tim Griffin, a “Rove protege” who was involved in vote caging for the 2004 election and was rewarded by an appointment as interim U.S. Attorney in Arkansa.

I don’t know how many of these “Rovettes” are lurking around, but I suspect there are enough to supply the GOP with all the dirty tricks they need for the foreseeable future.

You’re absolutely right — when Karl Rove says “I’m doing this for the sake of my family” (which has always been code for “I’m doing this to save my a$$”), he means “I am doing this so I can assist in the campaigns of other GOP candidates”.

Oh, it would be marvelous if Bush would do his own spinning — it would be the best free entertainment in the country if only it was so.

Bush will still have some spinmeisters left — the bobble-head twins Tony and Dana come to mind, and even Cheney left the bunker long enough recently to do an interview with Larry King and to make a pronouncement about how “inaccurate” polls are (only inaccurate when they aren’t going his way).

Would that really be enough to polish the president’s image? I admit it’s a start, but to salvage any of Bush’s image right now would take the ouster of Cheney, Gonzales, Snow, and all the rest of his merry men, as well as Bush leveling with the American people by admitting his invasion of Iraq was a shameless play for political power, for oil, for revenge, and a way to funnel boatloads of money to his buddies.

High morale of right wing talk shows? I believe that’s a contradiction in terms but even if you believe the term is correct there is no evidence to support that.

Pelosi and Reid fumbling the ball in congress? Your team didn’t even pick the ball up for 6 years and now you think they’ve fumbled it. Again without evidence.

Why does the president need anyone to present the president. Maybe because nobody understands the gibberish that exudes from his pie hole.

What would you be “betting” on with Bush about Jason?

Could you provide evidence of fumbling. High morale and the odds of what you would be on.

Hi, Bigfoot — good to see you, as you are one of the more intelligent sparring partners I have here.

You’re right in that Rove’s specialty is campaigns. The reason he stuck around as long as he did, was to continue “campaigning” for Bush — sell his policies, craft spin for the administration, etc. This isn’t unusual, considering that America obviously still needed to be sold on Bush after the 2004 election.

By leaving, Rove is then basically saying that Bush no longer needs campaigning (surprising, considering a major sales pitch on Iraq is imminent), or that Bush is toast and further campaigning to sell his policies would be pointless?

Another possibility — I understand that Rove has been wanting to leave for some time, but wanted to do it on his own terms — not at a point when he looked guilty for something (like outing Plame, or having a role in the U.S. Attorney firings). This leaves a rather small window of opportunity, so Rove grabbed the first window available.

This surely doesn’t change his “executive privilege” status. I can’t see him dropping out of politics – will he be helping to usher in a new Bush-like candidate to the oval office?
Gonzo is in Iraq teaching them how to govern (that’s a laugh)!
    Bush is on “vacation.”
Rove takes this time to announce.
Congress is gone, too. So hearings, etc. are all on “hold.”
Someone as deeply involved as Rove will remain so; it is up to us to learn his new capacity. And given his record, it won’t be good.
No one on the msm is treating this as anything other than business as usual. No questions, only interviews with Bill Bennett on CNN.
Is everyone just waiting for the second shoe to drop?

  102. Rosencrantz says:

I like how the media is adamany that this has nothing to do with scandal and Rove simply wants to spend more time with his family. Wow. Real original. HOw many times is the media going to swallow the line that scandal-ridden admin officials aren’t leaving because of scandal but because they “want to spend more time with their family”? Give me a break. The media truly is braindead.

If Rove wanted to retire a year ago, then why didn’t he? Why wait for over a year? Could it be because a year ago was when all the Plame leak stuff started coming out and getting serious? Could it be because people believe Rove is also involved in the Gonzales-gate issue and politicizing of the justice department? But no…only now that the heat on Rove has finally settled down thanks to bridge collapses, Iraq and holidays…only NOW does Rove see a good time to step down.

Then again, the way the media is acting, he’s right. Now is the perfect time because the media is going to swallow the tripe and not ask any questions about the scandals. As usual.

  103. Exley says:

Just to clear up some confusion on this thread — The term “Honorable” or “Hon.” is used not only when addressing members of the House and Senate and members of the judiciary, but also when addressing current and former presidential appointees, foreign diplomats, head of international organizations, state elected officials, and mayors.

See U.S. State Department Foreign Affairs Handbook Volume 5 Handbook 1 — Correspondence Handbook: Guideline 5 FAH-1 H-426.1-2

    Carry on.

Bush talking to his wife, Let me ask you Laura:

There is a note from Faiz about making changes.
I tried leaving and re-entering, but I still get the same thing. The newest thread is fine, though.

I hope he resigns from the planet while he’s at it. Loser.

  110. hellinabucket says:

Exley, for further clarification. The term “Honorable” is usually held for people who are honorable. When your nickname is Turd Blossom, honorable isn’t something that’s going to be associated.

Pretty sad, Exley, when all you’ve got this morning is the quibbling defense of a parody trolls use of terminology!

    Raven,

I was quite simply correcting the misstatements contained in postings 67 and 75.

  119. upside00 says:

#95 You’re right in that Rove’s specialty is campaigns. The reason he stuck around as long as he did, was to continue “campaigning” for Bush — sell his policies, craft spin for the administration, etc. This isn’t unusual, considering that America obviously still needed to be sold on Bush after the 2004 election comment by missmolly

I agree to a point….. I also feel the rover was much more behind almost ALL the spin we have had right up to today. Like how he can bait and switch attention in the media almost at will, how he can get Dubya’s speeches to contain “al Queda”, “Saddam” and “9/11″ 40 times a speech and STILL get some of the sheeple to buy it.

That is a talent that we know Darth doesn’t possess. SO, where will it continue to come from? A good question, or Dubya is to be left hanging like a maggot-ridden spoiled apple on the tree as the rest of the party runs away from the stench as fast as they can.

  122. OutSourcced says:

Wait until it happens to see if it’s true. Then, follow the money; his income will be eight figures within a year. The neocon billionaire welfare system works just fine.

KKKarl can also represent anyone he wants in ‘08 and beyond. Bush will still protect him via EP. But check his continuing security clearance; he know’s that’s the first thing a new administration will take away. Among the many jobs he’ll do, will likely be the one as senior vetter of materials at Shrub’s library.

Imagine what Karl’s done when he was supposed to follow the law as a public employee. Now, imagine what he’ll do when those laws no longer apply.

  123. Bush's bandits says:

Even Bush’s closest allies seem to have had enough of his middle-finger politics. This resignation is very telling, it reminds me of when Bush was re-elected for a second term and many of his higher-level staff (like Powell) said no thanks and stepped down. Very telling.

That’s what happens when you are well on your way to become the worst (if not there already) president in American history.

  124. a patriot acting says:

Rove plans to write a book?
“The REAL Satanic Verses” or perhaps a follow-up to a book by the original “genius”, Rove’s mentor Fred Malek (referenced here):
    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/6/6/182434/8934

  125. Anon says:

We’re asked to believe that the discussion bewteeen Rove and the President had been going on for a year; yet Kristol and others apparently “didn’t see it.”

It appears the timing is related to the FISA Act update, and the failure of the President to get all legal defenses needed to fully protect Rove included in the FISA Act update.

  129. tony says:

Rove puposely got the dems to take over congress for the last 2 yrs. Now that the country sees that all the dems have to offer our country is nothing but investigations,(10% approval ratiing) the eletorate will vote GOP overwhemingly in the next election. Rove- you magnificent bastard you!!!

  132. Probus says:

Rove can’t escape the scrutiny of Congress with this resignation. Rove will have to explain his role the US Attorneys firing scandal.

  133. RationalActor says:

I kept scrolling down — hoping to find a comment not apparently driven by raving paranoia… might have missed one, things started blurring together…

Don’t worry, I won’t be coming back here.

  134. tony says:

100 $ says Rove comes out of this without a scratch. He is just a way the dems sidetrack the public to make it look like the dems are doing something when we all know they have no ideas except that the goverment can do things better than free markets.

  135. The Oracle says:

Hey, Karl, don’t let the door hit your Turd Blossom ass on the way out, and don’t stop at Texas, keep on going until you’re as far away from our democracy and our nation’s children as possible.
