Leahy vows to press forward with Rove investigation.

When asked whether he was leaving to avoid congressional scrutiny, Karl Rove told the WSJ: “I’m not going to stay or leave based on whether it pleases the mob.” And Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) has made clear he’s not going to determine his subpoenas based on whether Rove stays or leaves. Leahy issued the following statement this morning, explaining the Senate Judiciary Committee “will continue its investigation” into Rove:rovey

Earlier this month, Karl Rove failed to comply with the Judiciary Committee’s subpoena to testify about the mass firings of United States Attorneys. Despite evidence that he played a central role in these firings, just as he did in the Libby case involving the outing of an undercover CIA agent and improper political briefings at over 20 government agencies, Mr. Rove acted as if he was above the law. That is wrong. Now that he is leaving the White House while under subpoena, I continue to ask what Mr. Rove and others at the White House are so desperate to hide. Mr. Rove’s apparent attempts to manipulate elections and push out prosecutors citing bogus claims of voter fraud shows corruption of federal law enforcement for partisan political purposes, and the Senate Judiciary Committee will continue its investigation into this serious issue.

The list of senior White House and Justice Department officials who have resigned during the course of these congressional investigations continues to grow, and today, Mr. Rove added his name to that list. There is a cloud over this White House, and a gathering storm. A similar cloud envelopes Mr. Rove, even as he leaves the White House.

UPDATE: Chris Matthews argued that Leahy will have an easier time getting Rove to testify now.

Interesting, Karl’s use of the term “mob”………

Something is DEFINITELY not ‘right’ about this. I’m thinking that it may have something to do with the Senate subpoenas, or as my fellow-blogger, profmarcus says, something really big is coming down the pike.

At any rate, I don’t buy it. He may be ‘officially’ off the payroll and out of the White House, but he’ll continue to run things from Texas. Evil of that magnitude does not bow out silently, or that quickly.

And, yes, I DO take it personally

    Geez….

That Harry Reid is a real slippery one, isn’t he? I admit that I was sure Harry and Nancy had something up their sleeve — and I was right — letting this country slip into the abyss.

  16. LibertyLover says:

GOOD! I was hoping that this would be the case. Let the investigations continue to their natural end.

  17. hellinabucket says:

You may have something katy. Why did he resign now though is my question. Some great points have already been made about what Mr. Rove had been doing but why now?

If Mr. Rove was serious about his 100 years of Republican domination he wouldn’t give up the idea so easily.

  18. bewilderbeast says:

Karl will be the next Scooter Libby. The Dem’s will get him on the stand and ask him tons of questions only to have Karl stonewall with executive privilege, “I can’t answer that” and “I don’t recall.”

Karl then gets sentenced for perjury/obstruction and Georgie pardons/commutes him.

    Same shit, different day.

    Question authority.
    Answer: I don’t recall.

You may be onto something. Patrick Fitzgerald’s final statement to the press following Libby’s conviction included a carefully worded comment about the investigation of the underlying crime of treason committed by Dick Cheney. Fitzgerald did not say the investigation was closed. He said something to the effect that for now the investigation was inactive. I don’t remember the precise words, but Fitzgerald is extremely careful with words, and it was clear that he was leaving open the possibility of reopening the investigation. Maybe someone on the inside came to Fitzgerald with new information that could nail Rove. Maybe Rove was just told this and is now on the run.

What’s with all these comments about Dems playing softball on this issue? The attorney firing issue is one the key issues they are NOT playing softball with. Of course we all want to see them brought to justice swiftly, but the Dems are, in fact, following the rule of law and proceeding cautiously and deliberately, building a STRONG case instead of just firing their six-shooters and yelling “yeehaw” like most of the world stereotypes Americans. They’re crossing their T’s and dotting their I’s and making sure it’s done right. Good for them. Justice may not be swift, but justice will be strong!

Just look at the state of Bush’s administration right now! Rove’s leaving!!! ROVE! This is the third best thing that could happen next to Cheney and Bush leaving themselves! Not to mention Gonzo looking like a complete utter fool and all the rest…

Remember that one of the things we’re (most of us anyway) are fighting for is the return of LAW and ORDER (and I don’t mean Fred Thompson’s former TV show). I’m tired of shooting first and asking questions later. As guilty as I think Rove and the others are, I WANT the proceedings to be thorough and accurate, the way it should be!

That being said, the 20 some odd Dems voting for the revised FISA law need to be voted out. :-)

I hope you’re right Verbalkint. It’s certainly feasible, & as posted above, Fitz may just have some more to say on this.

I also thought he’d architect the Thompson campaign, but another poster claimed he says he ‘getting out’.

Personally, I want to see him waiting to get out of jail.

Very well said, and great story on your link. Thanks.

I didn’t know you could wax poetic Bartlebee. Very well done.

If I were to attempt that it would involve a man from Nantucket and it would just go down hill from there so…….

There was a time that a version of CT would engage in actual debate. No sign of that today though.

    I’m dissapointed.

you have only yourself to blame for any dissappointment. Questions were asked several times today. No reply on them but enough time for BS posts.

No, I don’t. Please pull up that “post.” You’d find nothing.

There’s nothing wrong with priorities changing and evolving as time passes. Mistakes can happen, success occurs, and winning is the key.

We’re America, not a hoard of weaklings.

  116. BARTLEBEE says:

He’s just trying to draw me out Juan.

But I guess I’m gonna have to tone it down for a while to make TP happy.

We know they love neocon trolls, but they don’t seem to like libtrolls.

I know we can be friends despite our differences.

  118. VerbalKint says:

I am repeating myself, but just to be clear, Rove has stated that he is leaving politics, and that he will neither assist nor endorse any presidential candidate. Of course Rove is a pathological liar, but at least that is the official story, which tends to suggest Rove working somewhere in secrecy.

remember it’s always OPPOSITE DAY in bushco bizarro world…

There’s no hate. Only a firm belief that this administration has damaged this country and it’s principles for what we had stood on. Fear is what has been used by them to push their agenda without evidence. We aren’t safer when our military is stretched to the breaking point. We aren’t safer when there is no plan on how to pay for this blunder that has gone 500% over projected budget. We aren’t safer when one branch of govt. acts outside of the law.

Any and all supporters of this administration a very selective with any evidence to defend them but are so quick with insults.

I don’t hate the ignorant but I’m not going to sit by and let them believe their ignorance is the truth.

  123. Com_n_sense says:

The fact that rove has resigned on his terms makes me leery. This man does nothing that isn’t calculated.

His usefulness as a purely political animal in getting people elected is basically over, being that no one in the bush administration is running it could be that he’s going to become the Grand Yoda for the 08′ election. After all they’re still putting together the theft of the 08′ elections and it would take someone of rove’s talents to get any one of the sorry-ass candidates the Repukes have running elected.

I don’t know what it is that they’re up to, but I’d bet the bank it isn’t good.

The fact that it will make it harder from him to invoke EP doesn’t mean he won’t or that even if he were convicted for anyone of the numerous crimes he should be convicted of also doesn’t mean bush wouldn’t pardon him.

Whatever this is the fact they’re doing it on their terms makes me nervous.

Perhaps Rove will work behind the scenes to get a third-party campaign going, the specific purpose of which is to split the anti-Republican vote. Look at how Rove got the traitor Lieberman reelected over a true Democrat.

  125. Leahy Fan says:

Think of the timing. He’s leaving just as the candidates are positioning themselves for the next election. Do you think the possibility exists that the boy-genius is just freeing himself to get involved in the next presidential campaign?

  126. Armando Gomez says:

“As he did in the Libby case involving the outing of an undercover CIA agent and improper political briefings at over 20 government agencies, Mr. Rove acted as if he was above the law. That is wrong. Now that he is leaving the White House while under subpoena, I continue to ask what Mr. Rove and others at the White House are so desperate to hide. Mr. Rove’s apparent attempts to manipulate elections and push out prosecutors citing bogus claims of voter fraud shows corruption of federal law enforcement for partisan political purposes, and the Senate Judiciary Committee will continue its investigation into this serious issue.”

    By Senator Patrick Leahy

Senator Patrick Leahy, this is my response to you: Shut your fat stupid useless, purposeless and meaningless yap. All you had to do—and all you need to do—is subpoena! SUBPOENA! YOU TURD. So your job and shut the hell up!

  134. Jim says:

Doesn’t the congress have better things to do. Rove is gone. He’s outta there! Time to move on.

  135. Mouselion says:

It might be in vain — but KR needs to be pursued. Her and his ilk need to get the message: You Are Not Above The Law, We Take Our Democratic Republic Seriously.

Senator Leahy makes me proud to be a Vermonter. We need more like him in all levels and three branches of government.

  136. dras says:

Now what in the blue blazes make Chris Matthews believe that Leahy will have an easier time with the Rove investigation. Oh I forget how Matthews is an NBC expert. Judging how NBC is moving people out and around I’d keep my mouth shut if I were in his shoes. I’m sure everyone at NBC knows how even the famed Meet The Press was used by the crooked administration and need to be thinking of making some kind of change to the long running program. It’s to bad that CNN isn’t seen on a wider base because I’m sure that their Sunday morning program would cut into NBC just as Lou Dobbs does during the week.
Wolf, Lou then PBS news hour is all Americans with open minds need. After that find a movie and fall asleep.

  137. Chuck says:

It could possibly be that Rove has decided that Bush is a lost cause and is leaving to become the advisor/campaign manager for one of the Repub candidates thinking that he can work his magic again. I think the logical candidate would be Romney, that ticking-time-bomb-carbon-copy-of-Bush. Oh boy, wouldn’t that be scary.

  138. Probus says:

Leahy is right. Rove needs to come clean on his role. And what role Bush played in the US Attorneys firing scandal. He must comply with the subpoenas and testify.
