As soon as Karl Rove’s departure from the White House was announced this morning, there was no shortage of talking heads to appear on TV to lavish praise on him. On Fox News, former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card called Rove “a superstar,” CBS White House Correspondent Bill Plante described him as “the mastermind behind everything,” and on MSNBC, Chris Matthews declared “generally, where there’s brains, there’s Rove.”
While Rove is undoubtedly a skilled campaign tactician, the hyperbolic image of him as a political genius overlooks his record of bungled political predictions, a series of policy failures and the damage he has wrought on America’s political system.
ThinkProgress has put together a highlights reel of the breathless adoration for Rove. Watch it:
Conservative blogger Andrew Sullivan argues, “Rove is one of the worst political strategists in recent times. He took a chance to realign the country and to unite it in a war - and threw it away in a binge of hate-filled niche campaigning, polarization and short-term expediency.”
Washington Post’s Dan Froomkin adds, “After years of being lauded as a political genius, Rove nevertheless leaves his party in worse shape than he found it, with his boss profoundly discredited in the eyes of the American people.”
UPDATE: Huffington Post has video of the Boy Genius’s tearful goodbye from this morning.
That should be accompanied by violent vomiting, not gushing.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:19 pmKarl Rove is a traitor. The mass media, leaning so far right as to be completely untrustworthy, is complicit in America's weakening on the world stage.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:19 pmTold ya Tweety was gushing.
Gross.....
Rove is a failure, who has left his party worse than he found it.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:20 pmThat's his legacy. :-)
Like Dr. Strangelove was a "genius".
August 13th, 2007 at 4:20 pmThe MSM suckling at the teat of power. What a country, huh?
August 13th, 2007 at 4:22 pmChris Matthews used to be liberal. I won't watch him any more. MSNBC is making some strides with Keith Olbermann. If they really want to be a Fox alternative, they need to look at their lineup. Matthews should be one of the first to go.

August 13th, 2007 at 4:24 pmIs anyone surprised that Chris "Suck A$$" Matthews is on the tube claiming that Rove is a genius??
August 13th, 2007 at 4:24 pmBut Tweety, how does he smell? KKKarll is the master of dirty tricks and deception. If the media is so stupid that they don't know this or respect him for it they should lose their jobs.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:26 pmWhat a shame, he had hardly finished screwing the republics.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:26 pmUPCOMING
Karl Rove: Smarter than all lefties combined.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:27 pmCalling someone whom we all know committed treason a "genius" just shows how demented and twisted people have become.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:27 pmYeah, the mastermind that created the largest swing in 2006 of multiple generations... Boy Genius indeed!
Rove has done more for Democratic politicians than anyone! He's show how lunatic and hypocritical the fringe right is! Thanks Rove!
August 13th, 2007 at 4:28 pmAnyone next to Tweety Bird Matthews would appear to be a genius, for goodness sakes. Matthews is pathetic and Rove has become "toxic" to the RNC - that's the reason he's being asked to hit the road.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:29 pmCaption:
"My perspective of the world is this wide.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:29 pmI don't suffer from tunnel vision, I have tube vision!
The good news is, it's wide enough to see the teleprompter....
well except for the last few words of every line, those sort of bleed off into my fingernails....."
I would agree that Rove has done more since 06 for the DNC than anyone else so in that respect he might be rightfully called a "genius". Of course, I don't think that was his big plan though.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:29 pmLook, when the media gushes love at Rove, a master of manipulation, they are just looking stupid... what is this, the Helsinki Syndrome or do they see themselves as rovian?
August 13th, 2007 at 4:30 pmBack when Rove had everything under control it was fine. the inability of the neo-cons to pacify Iraq, has killed the party. If only somone could have foreseen that Iraq was not going to be a short term cake walk... Oh wait...
August 13th, 2007 at 4:30 pmSeeing Rove today looking ashen and pale tells me that he's been given a diagnosis which is mandating his retirement. He's probably terminally ill.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:30 pmWhat we all must remember is that Rove could not be the Rove we all know and despise (and Cheney couldn't be Cheney) were it not for a President like Dubya who, more so than any other President in history, chose to cede his power to subordinates who had their own agendas. Were it not for Dubya's willingness to sit back, ride his bike and take endless vacations, Rove would be no more than a footnote in history.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:32 pmYeah, I'd question the 'genius' that gets his boss a 29% approval rating.

Well, he's not done committing treason until the end of the month, but he started in 1998 with the CAGEing of voters and the manipulation of voting machines. When did you wake up, or is that question premature?
August 13th, 2007 at 4:38 pmYou're such a LOSER, p.
"...Ringo thinks..."
Ringo reacts.
August 13th, 2007 at 4:39 pmReacting requires no thought,
and in fact is an indication of thoughtlessness.
Rove is a mastermind; so was Hilter, so was Stalin, so was Napoleon.
Being a Mastermind does not suggest any moral or ethical grounding.
The failure of Karl Rove lies in his ability to market a campaign, but it is his only gift; once you're elected, you have to lead. You can't follow your election with just more marketing. You cannot start a war in order to win the next election. People do wise up with time.
Karl Rove is a ONE TRICK PONY. He couldn't even run an ethical marketing campaign...Which is why he desperately broke the Hatch Act in order to politicized Our Federal Government.
Remember, IT IS OUR GOVERNMENT, Not Bush's, not Cheney's, not Rove's. We will keep fighting for Our Country...
August 13th, 2007 at 4:40 pmRove, among all of the madministration, deserves the noose. We can only hope his hanging is televised worldwide, as an example of the proper treatment of traitors.

Rove’s biggest achievement is “losing†Congress to the Dems–by one of the SMALLEST swings ever recorded after a six-year hold on Congress by a party controlling the WH–in order to allow them to self-destruct. Rove the genius strategized that the Repubs should lose the Congress in 06 so the US public could see how badly Dems would screw-up the country. This is proven in the Dem-Congress’ ratings being lower than Bush’s and the lowest in history. Thanks to Rove “losing†the GOP Congress, the country now knows all Dems do is hold hearing to nowhere and FAIL to pass meaningful legislation. The Dems only passed a minimum wage increase–that’s why their ratings are at 16%. Good job, Rove for unmasking the Dem Congress!

If we wish to create a union for same sex couples, I’m all for it…..but since it would be different type of union than traditional opposite sex unions, it would require a new name to descibe it. Comment by Ringo — August 13, 2007 @ 5:12 pm
Not true. The Roman and Greek world both had gay marriage, as have many traditional cultures. Just because the current culture has chosen to be homophobic - don't lay that on 'tradition'.
August 13th, 2007 at 5:17 pmI saw that Karls favorite book was the Dream and the Nightmare by Myron Magnet about the haves making things worse by trying to help the have nots.
Ironically, today, we see the FED sinking billions of have not money into the house of cards built by the haves to keep it from hemmoraging to death.
The have nots, much to the chagrin of the haves, in reality support the haves. Maybe Karl woke up and realized he would never be a have and is really a have not?

I am not saying that Sullivan is 100% a liberal. But neither is he a 100% conservative. The fact is that he endorsed Bush in 2000 and Kerry in 2004. He takes many liberal social positions. He supported the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. But so did Hillary Clinton and John Edwards and numerous other progressives. I am just saying that it is disingenuously simplistic to label Sullivan a "conservative."

Well unfortunately the culture has chosen to be homophobic - because they permit the continuing discrimination and excuse it cloaked in religious dogma.
If they were so religious, they wouldn't permit divorce or remarriage. Both of those items were forbidden by the Jesus of their little black book - unlike homosexuality that they have to drag out some 'abomination' (simply means unclean) old testament garbage to attack.

You are an unintelligent, uncreative, useless drone working for the Republican party! Thank you!
It's fools like you that ensure your party won't run this country again for decades!
August 13th, 2007 at 9:01 pmGod I wish that MSNBC would get rid of Tweety and give his spot to David Schuster. Tweety has absolutely zero credibility with anyone these days. I can't believe that there is anyone who still watches him.

What a perfect moniker for a conservative troll. At least this person is being truthful with their moniker.
August 13th, 2007 at 9:08 pm"When did Rove commit treason?

When he outed Valerie Plame and her cover company to Matt Cooper.

I sure hope so. Because we all know what a good job he did in 2006. More of it is fine with me.
August 13th, 2007 at 9:12 pmThe only reason Rove is considered a genius is because he took a corporatist mindset, married it to religious fanatacism, sprinkled in a bunch of voter suppression and voila! Engineered the Bush reelection based upon divisiveness and hyper partisanship. It's genius because he got large swaths of people to vote against their own self-interest (and he cheated without really getting caught.)
All it takes to be a genius these days is to take discredited isuper elitist deology and form a political victory out of it.
The fact that he could never tell the difference between politics and policy is a feature, not a bug of his "genius".
Rove will be forever remebered as the archiotect of the worst presidency in US history.
August 13th, 2007 at 9:22 pmRove is no political genius. He is someone who has politicized every aspect of government to the detriment of the country. Instead of career prosecutors we have political appointees with no experience. Because of him the Justice department has lost its credibility and its respect among the legal community.
August 13th, 2007 at 11:17 pmDoes anyone have the Vatican's fax machine number? I've finished the paperwork to begin the canonization process for Rove, and I'd like to get the form to Rome ASAP. I imagine there's an additional form I'll need to fill out to see if I can get a waiver for him, beings Karl isn't Catholic.
August 13th, 2007 at 11:22 pmMatthews "Rove is like a fire hydrant!" Great, then let the dogs out.
August 13th, 2007 at 11:39 pmHe was one of the great trinity of under-Bushies to really let us have it: Rove, Cheney and Rumsfeld. As long as he could get 50% plus 1, Rove did not mind that he turned Democrats and Republicans into factions who might take generations to ever really get along again. In trying to get his 100 year Republican control, he really duplicated the Thousand Year Reich in his evil.
Here's hoping Leahy and Conyers persist in keeping him subpoenaed until he testifies and, perhaps, gets to joining some of his Republican colleagues in jail.

Is it me, or did these two talking heads imply that Bush is not smart? (Not that I disagree, I just think it's funny that they say these things on the air without realizing the implications)
Also, I have to agree with Andrew Sullivan. For someone who is supposedly a political genius (and should know better,) Rove managed to damage the reputation of the Bush clan, the Republican party, and the standing of the US in the world. Not to mention alienating the current administration from other Republicans and social conservatives. Unless, of course, that was his actual goal all along.
With Rove as a friend, who needs enemies.
August 14th, 2007 at 1:28 amKarl Rove was to Bush what Rasputin was to Csar Nicholas of Russia.
August 14th, 2007 at 1:42 amIf Rove was such a "genius" how come he didn't see the democratic takeover of Congress coming when everyone else did?
August 14th, 2007 at 1:52 amhi.good site.
August 14th, 2007 at 2:37 amMatthews is enough to gag a maggot off a gut wagon.
I haven't watched his pathetic propaganda extravaganza
for over a year now. Praise Jupiter for the ability to block
certain worthless programs from even tuning in on the cable
box.
Rove did every evil deed he could think of to bring the Republic
August 14th, 2007 at 4:01 amto its knees, and bring about a New Right Wing American Reich.
And now that the American people see these thugs in their
true light, Rove will get his wish. The only problem is, the one
Party rule will be by the Democrats. And that will be what the
history books will remember him for. In the end, people like Shizer Blossom have brought about the utter collapse of the so called,
"Family Values" Party, and helped expose the Right for the evil
self serving thugs they really always were, and always will be.
Rove should have to stick around until the bitter end of Iraq, like the soldiers he has sent there. They too would like to be spending more tme with their families.
August 14th, 2007 at 8:55 am"He took a chance to realign the country and to unite it in a war - and threw it away in a binge of hate-filled niche campaigning, polarization and short-term expediency.â€
Actually, he's smart enouigh to have gotten EXACTLY what he wanted.

He never outed her and she was not working for the Company at the time. Also, I thought you were against the Company, anyhow?
A democratic party is against self reliance and examples and what's to set up special rights for "special" groups?
How about that for anti-American?
August 14th, 2007 at 10:12 amI have never heard so much hate toward fellow citizens like I do in here.
I thought it was okay to ask a question without being ridiculed and dumped on.
If this is the civility and kindness the left wingers claim they are. I sure will hate it when or if you ever get the white house.
It is like the KKK of the modern times. Don't like 'em. Don't agree with 'em.
Ridicule, demise and lynch 'em.
Nice! Mob rule of the 21st century.
August 14th, 2007 at 10:16 amWhen people were accusing Rove of being involved with the Plame outting, or vote caging, the media accused them of fearmongering and conspiracy theories. Now that Rove is gone, the media not only says he is the "mastermind behind everything" but they say it in a way that is happy and proud of where Rove has taken America.
August 14th, 2007 at 10:26 amLost somewhere in the incredibly hateful and vitriolic discussions everyone seems to be having is this little nugget.
There have only been four instances in which one party completely swept to power in congress (well, four since the direct election of senators began anyways). 1952, 1954, 1994 and 2006. Forget about 1994 and 2006 and we'll talk about 1952 and 1954.
In 1952, the American people, fed up with the Truman administration (which held the previous record for lowest approval ratings) swept the Democrats out of Congress and the White House (electing Dwight Eisenhower in a landslide), filling it with Republicans that would "fix the problem". Low and behold, the Republican controlled government sucked ass and two years later, the Democrats swept back into power in Congress, control that would last exactly forty years.
This congress has passed one piece of meaningful legislation (minimum wage increase) and wasted a whole lot of time passing non-binding resolutions (as well as wasting our money, since we pay their salaries). So all the people who fervently believe that the dems are going to stay in power a long time, don't be so sure. Hilary Clinton (who will likely get the nomination, which drives me nuts ) is a polarizing figure. Fred Thompson (who will likely ride his Law & Order fame and Reagan like outsider status to the nomination) is not, at least not yet. The Deomcratic congress has the lowest approval rating in the history of Congress and seems more concerned with improving their public appearance than doing anything useful (impeachment anyone?).
This was originally a post about the media's love fest for Karl Rove, how it degenerated into a hate fueled discussion of gay rights, bigotry and vitriol is beyond me. I watched Countdown last night, the Daily Show, read three dozen articles about the resignation and heard a lot of different viewpoints. Some people love Karl Rove, some hate him. If you don't like the mainstream media, change the channel, or better yet, turn off the tv. People are allowed to have their opinions, not matter how much you may disagree with them.

August 14th, 2007 at 11:27 amChris Matthews is amazingly naive for a man his age. I'm at least 10 years younger than him and I can see that!
