Prior to the invasion of Iraq, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) introduced legislation to re-implement the military draft, arguing that the cost of war should be borne more broadly.
Donald Rumsfeld said of Rangel’s legislation: “We’re not going to re-implement a draft. There is no need for it at all.” More than four years after the war began, the White House has changed its thinking as it seeks more resources to maintain its escalation. Last Friday, the White House “war czar,” Gen. Doug Lute, suggested that the reinstitution of the military draft is being kept on the table.
Appearing on ABC this weekend, Rangel suggested that the Bush administration would “get out of Iraq so fast if they thought that Middle America had to make any sacrifices.” He added, “Believe me, when a Congress knows you’re talking about their community and their families, you’re reluctant to go to war in Iraq as speedily as we have.”
Rangel went on to explain that there’s already a version of the draft taking place:
It’s easy to talk about supporting a war if someone else is fighting that war. And we already have an economic draft. We’re holding hostage reservists, National Guard. We’re enticing kids that come from the highest unemployment areas with $15 — $20 — $30,000 dollars.
But for the middle class and the kids of the Congress, and the Pentagon, and the White House, they’re not involved. So you find a situation where people support the war, but not my kids.
Watch it:
Rangel continues to push for a draft, but argues that it should not resemble the one this nation experienced in Vietnam. “Vietnam had a political draft,” he said. “All you had to do is what Cheney did, what Bush did. All you had to do was know a politician and get deferments.” Rangel is calling for a draft with no deferments.
UPDATE: Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) has written a letter to President Bush asking him to clarify his policy with respect to the draft.

> I don’t think that Rangel’s idea will be accepted by the American people.
They would, if there was reason enough for it. The current “buy on impulse, charge my VISA” war does not count. But would Congress pass that? Naahh…
Anyway, the epoch of wars with “reason enough” is long gone anyways.
August 13th, 2007 at 3:10 pmActually, I think this is the magic bullet for the Democrats. They need to tell Bush that if he expects any more money for Iraq he will need to reinstate the draft and bring home the soldiers who are on their 3rd and 4th deployment. That way the Right can’t say that the Democrats don’t support the troops and it will put Bush on the hot seat to keep his war going. It will also make it HIS war and not allow him to put it on the shoulders of the Democrats.
August 13th, 2007 at 3:11 pmI wish there were a statute insisting that all war funds be paid from liquid tax monies, and not borrowed. As people saw the real cost of this fiasco, they’d end it yesterday.
August 13th, 2007 at 3:11 pmSo sharon is a fair-weather patriot. What happens if Hillary takes the white house and decides to send your kid off to Serbia like her husband did, to fight a war against a country on the other side of the world who offered no threat to the United States? Here is a clue for ya: if your kid is eligible for military service, they are able to make a decision for themselves.
I served in the late eighties and was offered $40K to stay in and I didnt grow up in the ghetto, this is nothing new. Depending on your specialty, you can make all sorts of dough as a reenlistment bonus. My boy just finished boot camp and is ready to move on to his first unit which may include combat duty (he doesnt know yet). My kid is a man, yours must still be a child.

I have been ready my entire life that he may die while acting foolish in his first car, decide to skydive and have the chute fail or die because he decided to use drugs and overdose.
My boy made the decision himself, he visited the recruiters and afterward asked my advice which consisted of “tell me what you think and Ill tell you what I know”. My son is a responsible nineteen year old man who made his decision himself, he knows what might await him. I wont be a mother hen and try to stand in the way of what HE holds important. Get that? And what about the National Guard redeployments for third and fourth tours without adequate R&R? Don’t get me started about the poor PTSD soldiers who are called back and not getting mental health relief. Unless we redeploy out of Iraq, what is the option? Wave the flag, hide behind the skirt. Them righties, they know how to start a war but their a little short on backing it. Like every other policy of theirs, it is hollow from the get go.
No, no need for a draft, no need for armored vehicles or bullet proof vests or sufficient troops to secure the munitions sites, the nukular sites, the oil lines, or museums, government buildings. We can win with a good platoon. You know, you go to war with the Army you have. (And the media bought that one. What an idiot Rumskull was. You go to war with the Army you have WHEN you don’t have a choice). When the choice is yours and you just want to up and invade someone cause you don’t like them or they “tried ta kill my daddie”, well then makes sense to maybe gear up for it. Unless ofcourse, you don’t care how many soldiers get killed. Afterall, some of them are Godless atheists, and turn to worm dirt according to at least one Army Chaplan.
So thus far our policies have been a blazing success, bringing ruin to both Iraq, its citizens, our Army, just about everyone but the unknown mercenarys. Yeah, dead-eye Dick, he’s a smart one alright.

So, if he does not follow what he creates himself then HOW CAN HE BE TRUSTED????
He is just a puppet at this point with ZERO balls to actually state anything beyond the WH talking points.
That would be why other Generals were let go before the war, because they too understood that it would take at least 650,000 troops to be successful.
So from the start, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and anyone else (NOT GENERAL RELATED) involved in the planning was WRONG!!!!
Yet, YOU want people to support something that Bush screwed up so badly because he “knew” more than the Generals…….

August 13th, 2007 at 3:59 pmSimple solution to this ongoing quagmire:
Serve, or be taxed.
(yes, both will have the right running like the chick’n hawks that they are, but someone’s got to pay for this mess. Why not the one’s who supported it?)
August 13th, 2007 at 4:00 pmI guess the propaganda is working! Ringo there is a difference between defending your country against invaders and fighting for nation building right? Are we on the same page there?
August 13th, 2007 at 4:01 pmThis war and the last wars going back to Korea are really just nation building but justified by the “threat” of the day, the reds, al quaida et al.
There are freedom of information documents about our own cia staging attacks against american citizens, and the cia may have organized Al quaida itself! No I don’t want to believe these things but there are bad people in our government too!
If you are the patriot you supposed to be involved in the goings on of our government, this includes dissenting views, which according to Thomas Jefferson is the duty of a true patriot, that is to bring the government to task when they have stepped over their bounds.
militarily speaking a draft should be on the table if we are to continue with this level of troop involvement. Along with a draft there would need to be serious procurement of new equipment. The talk of tax cuts would be dropped and talk of rationing would rise.
The neocons talk of the fight of our lifetimes in fighting terror but balk when the tough decisions need to be made.

But these people are so stupid and hidebound, that not only will they refuse to admit that it was a mistake, but they won’t even admit that IT’S NOT EASY.

I think that after this mess is over, that Congress should write a law that states First, if the president is going to start a war in another country that he must FIRST impliment a draft to increase the military, and Second that there is to be NO PROFITS. Only cost of the product being produced.
That means that there is to be no markup on product and that only what it actually costs the manufactureer to produce the item is what they can charge.
If this law went into effect, I guarantee that there would be no more invassions by the US…..

August 13th, 2007 at 4:12 pm#24 – Thank you for saying what i couldn’t type fast enough to. I have been a federal employee since 1979 and all while my kids were growing up in the ’80’s & 90’s I watched the military men and women in my building enlist, ship off to boot camp, return and re-enlist. Up until Iraq I often encouraged my sons to enlist because I believed (based on the men and women I talked to every day) that military service would teach them things no school could, would show them the world that we could not and would build strong character in each. But the men and women I see today aren’t re-enlisting and return to the states depressed, angry, fatigued and disenchanted with the white house. Iraq is not a noble cause and I fear for neices who are traveling abroad – who come home to tell us how Americans are despised and distrusted. This isn’t the world I envisioned for my children. I salute all those who served and hold no grudges against the troops – no matter where they served. But any parent with enlisted children wants their cause to be just and true – not the charade this white house has played on the american people.

Real Americans of all colors and both men and women support the noble cause that this War stands for, whether they are in the military or not.

Comment by Malice — August 13, 2007 @ 4:16 pm
This is such a bunch of bushwa I don’t know where to begin.
REAL Americans remember when we were the good guys and not the bullies.
REAL Americans can see that the war in Iraq isn’t for any “noble cause” — it’s for oil, it’s for revenge, it’s to distract Americans from the fact that Osama bin Forgotten hasn’t been caught.
REAL Americans know that the “war on terror” is purely a propaganda move to allow the neocons in charge to erode our freedoms (you remember freedoms, don’t you — you know, the liberties we supposedly fight for?). If we were fighting a REAL war on terror, we wouldn’t be beating up countries who did NOT blow up our buildings, or taking away hair gel from people at airports while incoming cargo containers go unchecked.
And yes — I am proud to be a REAL American. (I also served in the U.S. Navy, so don’t reply telling me I ought to sign up.)

This is a democracy–if we don’t want to send our kids to or pay for this war, then by golly our elected officials need to think twice about what the hell we’re doing there.

First!!!!
A person that “serves” does not say so unless they have!!! (Though some Chickenhawks have but that is rare and can EASILY BE DETECTED)
Second!!!!!
There is a difference from being in the military and serving in the military….
Though they sound similar for a person SUCH AS YOURSELF, they actually are not…..
Being in the military is open ended and could mean that they did not RECIEVE a honorable discharge.
However, saying one “served” means that they did just that and received an “honorable” discharge and a DD214.
Now go play with your tonka toys……
August 13th, 2007 at 6:03 pmCT can’t grasp the concept of the military and keeps putting up strawmen to thump. If the military so designates that soldier/sailor/airman or marine to stay on that base and perform a duty then that’s what they will do. All parts are needed to create the objective.
When I was in the service it was 6 soldiers behind the line for every soldier on the line. CT may not understand the logistics needed to fully implement a fighting force but those who have lived it do.
August 13th, 2007 at 6:05 pmShane,

Wayne & Uncle Ho,
Last night I was lurking — because I was no longer able to comment — and suddenly, when I hit refresh, comments started disappearing by the hundreds. And the trolls disappeared as well. Nice….
Some of them have crept back, but these are pretty lame — and are in their last throes. :D

Comment by CT_Version 2 — August 13, 2007 @ 7:05 pm
Big deal, it’s so easy to fake a hearing test. I know, because I faked it UP! It was long test, and I caught the rhythm of the tones, so I marked for pitches that I thought maybe I might have heard. The person who evaluated the test was quite impressed by how ‘good’ my hearing was. It would be even easier, of course, to fake for bad hearing.
But I don’t really care… if you didn’t want to join and faked your way out, that’s cool. Or if you truly have bad hearing, I’m sure you’ll find other challenges. The military wasn’t really so hard compared to other things I’ve taken on, but it did enrich my life and I’m grateful for it. But not everyone thinks that way…
If fact, a lot of people think all kinds of different ways. The Constitution provides room for the exchange of ideas and was designed to ensure that dogmas of varying kinds would not be imposed upon citizens. Then you come in here ordering people to “shut up” and “get out”, and just in general ragging on people all kinds of ways. You pretend to some superior wisdom and authority, but the only thing you’ve got to back it up is “My paps is a retired Marine.”
If that’s all you got, then I see why you’re hurting, why you’re in here lashing out and trying to offload your pain. Well, it’s time to start owning your problems. If you do that, then you can own the strength to solve them… you’ll be whining here or somewhere until you do.

I’m sure Rep. Rangel would get a pretty penny from Western Oil contractors if he could bring about the draft.
By pretending it would be fair – thus we need it.
Its Bullshit. Rangel doesn’t care about people any more than Bush cares about people- that criminal New York congress.
And I think it’s pretty awful that Josh Marshall website is obtuse enough to entertain such a concept even for a minute. Rangel is a congress man that wants to stuff his pockets full of campaign contributions and favors from what Hillary insist is “our vital interest in region” of Iraq – the OIL and WHY she really isn’t getting out of Iraq either – but how does the US stay part way? Americans are very stupid if they consider a Draft a good idea when MOST us want out of this war NOT more into it.
Talking Points can be played like fiddler if they news group seriousely believes the garbage that Rangel is peddling – it’s a lie, and Rangel knows it’s a lie. Just because Rangel wears the label Dem doesn’t mean he gives a damn about anyone other then himself.

Comment by shane — August 13, 2007 @ 7:51 pm
He offered a cease-fire, but it was deleted. :(
August 13th, 2007 at 9:17 pmRangel is right. A draft is a good idea because it will lift the burden from troops already stretched too thin in Iraq. Also a draft without a deferment is the right way to go. Politicians’ rich kids will have to serve.
August 13th, 2007 at 11:09 pmActually, there’s already been a draft involved in the Iraq war that Bush started.
Until Bush diverted the war effort away from getting the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan to start a totally insane war in Iraq, how many National Guardsmen and reservists thought that they’d end up in combat?
Sure, some hoped for it, but most were probably finishing up their commitment to the military, building their businesses and families, while preparing to help in cases of domestic national emergencies…not to be de facto “drafted” into a war in Iraq.
As I’m certain our nation’s state governors weren’t expecting to see much of their manpower and equipment “drafted” into a war that Bush started in Iraq.
The criminal actions by Bush and the worst administration in American history go beyond reprehensible.
August 14th, 2007 at 1:12 amANYONE (even Rangle) suggesting the draft can “go straight to hell” — do not pass go. I didn’t spend the better part of my life raising my sons to “die for a pack of lies” and anybody aiding those lies thru act or deed (including arguing for the draft) , is complicit in these lies and is therefore , an enemy of mine.
Originally Rangle kept saying the current system targets an inordinately high number of black youths and therefore the draft should be required. But now that it has been recently disclosed that that is not the case at all (blacks are 12% of the population but have less than that in the military) , there is no good reason for him to continue this argument.

I suppose you didn’t learn anything, even while as a Marine. To your credit, you admitted that you just “made some good friends.” That was your contribution to the service.
You talk as if my time in that recruiting office was mandatory, as if I was actually being drafted and needed to “get out of something.” No, “Ex Jarhead,” it’s an all-volunteer service, I went on my own accord, so there’s nothing to “fake.” You are stoking political pressures (left vs. right) to falsely calculate my personal decisions, which makes you a bad citizen. Admit that you’re wrong instead of switching to super-project mode. I’m not a cheater. And no more information needs to be disclosed to a political hack like yourself.

Tattoos, nah… we used to slam a lot of beer though, straight out of the pitcher at the EM club, but that was where we went to critique our prior craziness and plot our next adventures…
As for the rest of your post, your opinions don’t carry much weight here. You goose step around issuing orders, e.g., “Shut up!” “Get out!” You lay harsh judgments on anybody who has differing opinions, as if you, exclusively, are privy to the “truth”. Since you don’t have much life experience yet, this reflects directly on your upbringing, and my impression is that you have a lot of work to do in sorting out your true identity from that which has been imposed upon you… Your contribution to this world, if you care to make one, will be to discover who you really are
August 14th, 2007 at 1:24 pmRangel is really messed up.
Would you be willing to spread the word about http://www.draftresistance.org? It’s a site dedicated to shattering the myths surrounding the selective slavery system and building mass civil disobedience to stop the draft before it starts!
Our banner on a website, printing and posting the anti-draft flyer or just telling friends would help.
Thanks!
