The White House and its conservative allies rushed to shower Karl Rove with superlatives this morning, saying that he was the “political genius” who “masterminded” the Bush presidency. White House Deputy Press Secretary Dana Perino said that “it’s a big loss to us” because Rove has “a brilliant mind.”
In an interview with Wall Street Journal editorial page editor Paul Gigot, Rove made a series of rosy predictions about the future of right-wing politics:
“He will move back up in the polls,” says Mr. Rove, who interrupts my reference to Mr. Bush’s 30% approval rating by saying it’s heading close to “40%,” and “higher than Congress.”
Looking ahead, he adds, “Iraq will be in a better place” as the surge continues. Come the autumn, too, “we’ll see in the battle over FISA” — the wiretapping of foreign terrorists — “a fissure in the Democratic Party.” Also in the fall, “the budget fight will have been fought to our advantage,” helping the GOP restore, through a series of presidential vetoes, its brand name on spending restraint and taxes.
As for the Democrats, “They are likely to nominate a tough, tenacious, fatally flawed candidate” by the name of Hillary Rodham Clinton. Holding the White House for a third term is always difficult given the pent-up desire for change, he says, but “I think we’ve got a very good chance to do so.”
Rove’s reputation as a “brilliant” political prognosticator belies his track record of grossly getting it wrong on his major predictions:
1) In 2006, roughly a week before the midterm election, Rove predicted “a Republican Senate and Republican House” by claiming sole access to “THE math.” [NPR, 10/24/06]
2) In November of 2000, Rove claimed the “election will not be close.” Rove predicted Bush will “win enough states to get about 50 more Electoral College votes than he needs to win. Rove also predicted Bush will get about 50 percent of the popular vote, with Gore at about 45 percent.” [Houston Chronicle, 11/6/00]
3) During the 2000 primary campaign, Rove declared: “We’re going to win New Hampshire,” referring to the Republican primary. [USA Today 1/25/00]
In reality, the Democrats swept into Congress in 2006, winning both the House and the Senate. The 2000 presidential election was extremely tight, with Al Gore winning the popular vote. And in the 2000 New Hampshire primary, Sen. John McCain routed Bush by 18 percentage points.
As Media Matters has documented, the political press has consistently “accorded significance” to Rove’s prognostications even though they were nothing more than bluster and deluded self-assurance.
UPDATE: PoliticsTV has compiled Karl Rove’s video hall of shame. Take a look here.

Yes, Rove has been all that. But he wasn’t the first one to specialize in dirty tricks. Nixon had Donald Segretti and even Dubya’s daddy had Lee Atwater. Rove is just the latest model, and (sadly) he won’t be the last.
I just noticed as I am typing this, that Segretti, Atwater, and Rove were all used by Republicans. Hmmm…
August 13th, 2007 at 11:35 amHere’s a look back at the results of the “Karl Rove Whack-a-Mole Contest.”
August 13th, 2007 at 11:37 amRove is an Evil Genius. Except for the “genius” part.
He made his name NOT by being a brilliant strategist and tactician, but by being willing to go to any length to disparage his candidate’s opponents. He has no moral compass and that has governed his political life. He and the entire Republican party should be ashamed of Rove’s actions, but instead he will be carried out on the shoulders of the spineless, immoral Republicans who currently represent the party.
August 13th, 2007 at 11:38 amI just saw Chris Matthews talking to some other clone about Rove – apparently Rove is quite the genius and did a hell of a job. No word about the effect his “genius” has had on this country.
Bye, Karl. Rot in hell.
– Real Zooey :)
August 13th, 2007 at 11:41 amThe road Rove now travels ends in prison. He has done much to destroy the Republican party, and when Republican leaders finally realize how far down the rabbit hole they have gone, and see 10-20 years of minority status ahead of them, blame will begin to fly. Rove already has many enemies within the party. When Bush is out of power there will be payback. No one really has to do anything. They just need to NOT protect Rove, and let the DOJ under new leadership do the rest.

Please sign on the dotted line right below the Romney five for one way tickets to Iraq.

The Republican Party will live again, but only if honest Repubs reclaim it. With an election coming up in sixteen months, this would be the time to do just that. It boggles my mind that the congressional GOP is still marching in lockstep with people who have sold out the country, mortgaged it to China, and trashed our credibility in the world for their own nefarious agenda.
August 13th, 2007 at 11:53 am#32 missmolly, it takes longer to rebuild a party than that, and the current leaders of the party will continue to delude themselves until they are clobbered in 2008. August 13th, 2007 at 11:58 amThe problem for the Republican party is that at its heart, it exists to reward wealthy corporations and individuals. Many of its policies cannot be sold on their merits to middle class Americans. So the Republicans need to maintain a constant web of deceit to sell their policies. Too many people have caught on, however. The party cannnot live solely on their base of ignorant evangelicals, some of whom are already catching on to the fact that they’ve been played. So where does the party find people to build a new base? It won’t be easy for them.

August 13th, 2007 at 12:13 pmi see him as a rat gettin’ a short flying lesson from the local red tailed hawk!
August 13th, 2007 at 12:15 pmI’ve posted about this before and I know that most of you just dismissed it, but follow me one more time — remember a year ago that John McCain was the sweetheart of the ball but somehow he took the advice of neocons, religious righties, and Bush “insiders” and he systematically destroyed himself. Then came Rudy, who looked great for a while but then somehow couldn’t quite wear the neocon hat very well. Try as he might, he just couldn’t lie with the conviction that ‘head Cheney or Bush do — and his star has fallen.
Now we have Mitt, who is the new darling, but we all know there are too many vulnerable chinks in the armor. He is rising fast and he will fall just as fast — he’s just one “you’re not really a true conservative” blast away. Especially, if that blast comes from the leaders of the religious right.
Let’s fast-forward to early/late November and look at the Republican field. No clear leader, no truly strong front runner, and definitely no one to unite/excite the Republican Party for the coming election. What to do –
In steps Jeb, reluctantly, wholesomely, not strident, didn’t really intend to, and with nothing bad to say about Rudy/John/Mitt or any of the rest of the field. He says that he was asked to join the field by James Dobson (Terri Schiavo), then Mel Martinez (Cuban vote), then by his son George P. (Hispanic vote).
The base rallies around him as they finally have someone with impeccable conservative credentials, and an absolute known quantity that is acceptable to everyone. Karl Rove comes out of retirement to run just one more campaign because “it is so important to the future of the country”. Fox news and the Wall Street Journal have finally found someone that they can endorse “for the good of the country”. Ken Mehlman, the neocon machine, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, and the entire right-wing noise machine can all coalesce around his candidacy because, while they can’t be super enthusiastic they don’t need to be super enthusiastic. It’s just the right thing to .
By late November, it’s too late for any of the other candidates to really do sufficient background research that could undermine Jeb and even if they have some things there’s not enough time to work them in effectively.
I can go on and on but the real question is — WHAT ARE THE NET ROOTS GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?????? Runaround gnashing their teeth. Talking and posting back and forth to each other about how it shouldn’t be happening while the 60% of the electorate that doesn’t read blogs is being (neocon-icily) manipulated into feeling comfortable (if not enthusiastic) about Jeb Bush. Maybe you will all follow the DailyKos guide of marginalizing yourselves into ineffectiveness — see Ralph Nader And the Green Party — you’ll lose, the causes that you care so much about will be trampled, but you can always say that you fought the good fight.
By now, you should all be very angry with me and this post, but the question remains — what are you going to EFFECTIVELY do about it???. Effectively here is defined by actually winning the election — not by snobbery, or correct thinking, or righteous positions, or political extortion (read Markos) or by intellect alone. WHAT are you going to do about it?
Here’s a plan (there are other plans), pick a candidate, any candidate, and work on getting the whole party behind one candidate early on. He/she does not have to be perfect — they don’t have to kiss your ass. They don’t have to agree with you on every issue. They don’t have to acknowledge that you are the smartest, most righteous progressive thinker and activist since sliced bread. What they have to do is win — – and then we all win — – and then we can get to the work of changing things.
Next, flight or fight — are you going to choose flight by attacking this post and sticking your head in the sand and assume that it can’t happen or are you going to choose fight by considering it as a possibility and start preparing for that possibility. Attack Jeb now. Alert the other GOP candidates now. BTW — don’t assume that all of the dislike for W. translates into dislike for Jeb — it just ain’t so.
Lastly, if you see this post as a finger in your eye, you’re already a loser. Like you, I’ve done plenty to work for the progressive cause and, like you, the neocons and the neo-feudalists outflanked me too. Don’t underestimate the neocons, the international neo-feudalists, the Bush family, Karl Rove, or Rupert Murdoch just because you have a “feel-good†by surrounding yourselves with people who think like you — that doesn’t WIN on Election Day. To win elections you have to get people who don’t think like you to vote for your candidate.

August 13th, 2007 at 12:27 pmMr. Rove is many things, most unprintable, but he is not delusional.
When he lies in public, it is to promote his strategy. That may be to avoid admitting an inconvenient truth, lest it snowball; it may be pretend to an untruth, lest admitting the truth embolden his enemies; it may be to mindpluck his enemies, to keep them off guard; actually telling a limited truth can do the same, and he does that, too. But he doesn’t lie because he believes his own fantasies. His job is to make others do that.
He has proven that he and his clients can avoid consequences – and jail time – by turning Nixon’s Big Lie into Rove’s Bigger One.

#10, Aside from the fact that you have embarassingly posted on the wrong thread, I would also point out that despite your extensive “Google” searches, Karl Rove, as a deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to the president is an appointee to which the use of the term “Hon.” is acceptable under the U.S. State Department and other guidelines.
For example, when John Podesta was chief of staff to President Clinton, he was listed as “Hon. John Podesta.”

No — even if the GOP worked to wrest control of the party from the neocons starting now, they probably wouldn’t have the job done in time for the 2008 elections.
But remember that it was a scant six years between the resignation of Richard Nixon and the election of Ronald Reagan. Rove DID get one thing right — and that is the length of the average American’s attention span.

“Your [sic] infesting all these threads with your feeble quiblings”
Actually, before you posted on the incorrect thread, I had only posted on one thread today. So, you are again mistaken.
As for the rest of your “Wikipedia” research, I am glad to see that you finally admit that I was correct when I pointed out that other posters were in error when they falsely claimed that the term “honorable” should only be applied to members of Congress and judges. As you now acknowledge, the term is also applicable to presidential staff members.
Since you are accepting of “Wikipedia,” I leave you with this:
“In the United States, the prefix The Honorable is used for some current and, in some cases, former government officials. Though there are few actual legal regulations of the title, it does appear in correspondence regulations and guides to forms of address. The “Federal Usage†is expressed in the United States Department of State correspondence guidelines and includes:
…
Appointed federal department heads, cabinet-level officials, Assistants to the President (down to the “Special Assistant†level)…”

August 13th, 2007 at 2:05 pmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Honorable#American_Usage
August 13th, 2007 at 2:36 pm” Federal usage also notes that the style of “Honorable†is used for life. This would include persons convicted of crimes after leaving office, resigned under a cloud, or who were removed from office…Still others, notably Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus, extend this down to all members of local legislative bodies and municipal attorneys (though not “Special Assisants to the President”) “….Looks like the Websters Def conflicts with your “federal usage” exlaxley.
Congratulations, you’ve successfully proved that Rove theoretically deserves the ambigious title “honorable” just like people like felon Bob Ney and the local dog catcher do…
Exlaxley how do you reconcile the fact that websters definition of honorable doesnt include “special assistants to the president”… as your “federal usage” definition does? Why does one trump the other?
August 13th, 2007 at 2:38 pmStill waiting for Exley to nitpcik the flaws in this statement:

August 13th, 2007 at 4:24 pmThe correct things Rove said:
Congress’s approval ratings, as a whole, are lower than Bush’s. That’s what they get for betrayal.
http://www.pollingreport.com/CongJob.htm
http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm
The FISA debate has caused a fissure in the Democratic Party. Witness the fight between Kos and the DLC as well as all the calls for ditching all the blue dog dems. Of course, that won’t last since party comes before country for most of these people.
And if Hillary Clinton gets the Dem nomination, the Republicans WILL have a decent chance at beating her. Remember 51% of the US has said that they will not vote for her no matter what.
August 13th, 2007 at 7:47 pmRove is such a poor strategist that on election day 2000 he sent Bush to campaign in CA instead of FL. If he had Bush might have actually won FL, which he didn’t.
August 13th, 2007 at 10:53 pmRove couldn’t even predict the obvious last year. Democrats won the 2006 midterm elections by a landslide. His “math” failed.
August 13th, 2007 at 10:57 pmAll these glowing accolades by right-wing pundits and politicians is because they know that Rove will do a hatchet job on them in his upcoming book if they don’t suck up to his Turd Blossom ego and ass now.
But I actually agree with Rove’s statement about there being a fissure in the Democratic Party, because Rove has found willing co-conspirators in the rubber-stamp Republ…er, DINO DLC Blue Dog Democrats, who have consistently sided with the “culture of corruption” Republicans against the progressive, liberal wing of the Democratic Party, somewhat hampering efforts to stop the criminal acts of the worst and most corrupt administration in American history. Which is why Rove is optimistic that these DINO DLC Blue Dog Democrats will continue to do the same, which will do even more damage to our democracy beyond that which has already been done.
