Fox’s Right-Wing Alternative To Daily Show Fails

In January, Fox announced that it would begin airing the “Half Hour News Hour” on Sunday nights, the so-called “right-wing answer to ‘The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.‘” “You can turn on any show and see Bush being bashed,” said creator Joel Surnow, producer of Fox’s 24. “There really is nothing out there for those who want satire that tilts right.” As Fox has learned, that’s because no one wants to watch that kind of satire.

TVNewser reports today that the HHNH has been canceled. In a memo to senior producers today, Fox News Corp.’s senior vice president Bill Shine announced:

Joel Surnow and I have mutually decided that we will not continue the Half Hour News Hour beyond its current 15 episode run. The last show will be presented on September 16th.

Shine claimed the reason for the shelving of the show was that Fox is “considering ways to retool the show for future scheduling needs.” He held out the chance that the show would air again: “There is still a chance you will see the program at some point in the future.”

The first show guest-starred right-wing all-stars Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter as President and Vice President. Watch a clip from a preview of the first show:

The reviews for the program were consistently dismal. Its very first review, from the Orlando Sentinel, decried the “[l]aughter, of an awfully canned variety, greets all the gags. Nothing happening on screen justifies these outbursts. … If we’re lucky, we’ll never hear of this dreadful show again.” “Sometimes the humor is so heavy-handed that it seems almost like self-parody,” said the New York Times. “The 1/2 Hour News Hour is slow torture all by itself,” said the Philadelpha Inquirer.

What the right-wing failed to grasp is Jon Stewart is funny not because he spins falsehoods but because he tells the truth.

Oddly enough, HBO took the “You may be offended if…” scroller and used it with Bill Maher’s comedy special (with different names, of course). I know that thing has been done way before HHNH, but to see it used for a Bill Maher comedy special was a surprise.

  5. VerbalKint says:

This show failed because it was unable to distinguish itself from Fox’s supposed real news programs, which have been unintentionally self-parodying for years now.

I’m genuinely not sure the hard right knows the difference between truth and falsehood. When you get to the point where the ends are more important than the means, it seems you lose touch with things like laws, ethics, Constitutions, truth, and all that useless junk. “Truthiness” was a wonderfully funny acknowledgement of that.

I HAVE TO TELL YOU ALL ABOTUT ONE OF THE EPISODES I SAW…

Man, I was flipping channels, and past FoxNews, and there was “1/2 Hour News Hour”, which I hadn’t seen since… well, since clips were posted online. So, I wanted to see what a full show would actually look like. And this was the one and only skit I could get through… you won’t BELIEVE it….

The skit is about 3 new authors who have written books against the belief of God, much like the real-life book “The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins, and “God Is Not Great.” There are two hosts of the show who begin interviewing the guests.

Two of the guests are via satellite, the third is in studio. The first guest via satellite begins talking about his book. When they move on to the second guest via satellite, the first one begins choking and then dies. The second guest says she knows people will think this was an act from God, but they are crazy to think so – but then this second guest dies as well.

The third guest, who is in studio is in a total panic. He doesn’t want to talk about his book. When they ask him about it, he frantically says the book is a work of fiction…. and I don’t remember the rest.

What I do remember, is how EXCITED the audience was to see the non-beleivers killed. They cheered, they clapped, and laughed.

That was the skit. There was no joke, there was no punch-line. There was no commentary. There was no one who spoke a line which sort of encapsulated everything into a smart commentary on… anything (commentary on religion, non-beleif, nothing).

No wonder this show is gone. It has no humor. The show is simply there to create an imaginary world in which conservative, racist, bigoted, sexist, religious, hateful people could love to live in.

  24. AnonymousByChoice says:

….and FoxNews can’t blame the bad ratings on anyone but their own conservative idiot viewers.

  25. gummitch says:

Jon Stewart’s show is funny because, well, because he has creative funny writers and actors. It’s funny because poking fun at the people in power is almost always good for a laugh. If it makes fun of people on the Right, it’s because (a) they’ve been in power and (b) they’ve been ridiculous in their pomposity and hypocricy.

  26. missmolly says:

The wingnuts just don’t get it. The Daily Show isn’t a lefty show. It satirizes everybody and everything worth satire. It just turns out that’s usually the right wing. Same can be said of Stephen Colbert. Same can be said of Bill Mahre.

Furthermore, anybody who watches the above shows know that it’s not all about bashing Bush. That would get boring after awhile. These guys make fun of politicos, but they also make fun of pop culture and society in general.

When you vow to only “bash” a particular group or a particular ideology, you lose the humor and it gets old fast. And it can look more mean and petty than funny, especially if your flag-bearers are Limbaugh and Coulter. For the show to be successful, you want to tweak the other side in such a way that a lefty could tune in and at least laugh at himself.

I understand Don Imus was looking for a job — why didn’t Fox snap him up?

    Two observations:

    1) Think of the average IQ of the audience for The Daily Show. To understand the wry humor and satire of this show, one needs intelligence higher than that of eggplant. The “creative writers and actors” would have a much tougher time if they had to dumb down to the audience.

    2) Molly Ivins had a personal rule never to go after the weak — only attack the powerful. The Daily Show, the Colbert Report, etc. have followed this rule, and it’s a big part of their success.

The thing is, it’s not that the satire failed. It’s that it wasn’t satire. The best satire is hilarious because it is strongly grounded in reality and so it cuts very close to the bone on its targets and perhaps on its viewers as well. The one on that stupid channel simply re-hashed and aired all the same tired talking points that usually have no basis in fact or at least extremely misconstrued to put Dems in a bad light. Additionally, knowing how fair and balanced FAUX was, I bet that that stupid show never hit a Repub, regardless of how supposedly disloyal (cough cough Chuck Hagel, George Voinovich) they were. The Daily Show has hit Dems when they have rolled over like the soft toys that they too often are. So a partisan outlook is anathema to satire. They’re incompatible.

“What the right-wing failed to grasp is Jon Stewart is funny not because he spins falsehoods but because he tells the truth.”

  54. trevjr says:

I heard that that show was paying people $15 to come in so they would have a live audience. Funny, how the Daily Show is booked solid 5 months in advance.

Mostly what the Daily Show does is point out the truth and show how absurd people are from Rush to Bush to Hillary, it does not matter. One thing the Daily Show does that the MSM fails to do is to show clips of Bush and Cheney saying the opposite of what they just said. Famous example is a recent interview where Cheney said ‘I never said that’, and then Jon shows the clip where he says it.
Why the MSM does not point this out I do not know!!!!! This is true lying and you must find out from a comedian.

Last night Jon had a memory expert on and showed a clip of Rumsfeld saying ‘30 years ago….’ and he had a detailed memory of what happened. Compare to the hearings a little while ago, where Rummy could not recall anyting.

I am constantly amazed how comedy shows have more truth than the ‘real’ news, truly amazed.

    Very similar to the HHNH.

    Just sleazy character attacks.

What makes the Daily Show FUNNY is that Stewart simply has to present the people like Bush, etc., LYING and saying things that show them to be HYPOCRITES.

i.e. Leakers should be PUNISHED if it shows that Bush committed CRIMES, but Libby, Rove, Armitage are PATRIOTS who deserve PARDONS when they

SABOTAGE NATIONAL SECURITY by exposing our WMD SPY.

    DOUBLE STANDARDS.

Now, if the HHNH could actually use FACTS in order to show that the DEMS are being hypocritcal,

    THAT would be funny.
But HHNH is Karl Rove-specialty CHARACTER ASSASSINATION.

    NOT “humor”.

    Comment by r — August 14, 2007 @ 7:19 pm

The troops are being used for bait. Where have you been living, on Mars?

The troops are simply bait for the Iraqi insurgency. The plan is leave the troops there, driving around in unprotected humvees as bait for insurgent attacks. Then, when a humvee full of troops gets blown up or comes under fire, we can catch insurgents.

The troops are being used to draw out the enemy, and not in a safe way. They’re dangling on the end of Bush’s fish hook, and getting killed for it.

    Get a clue “r”. (r u stupid?)

My local newspaper ran a puff piece on this show just last week. No word about its impending cancellation–quite the opposite. The article was written in the context of the show being rescheduled and slightly retooled after its initial run.

What would a satire program on Fox News, with its own cast of self-parodies, even look like? It seems redundant. Is it possible that viewers the self-avowed fake news program couldn’t distinguish it from other Fox News programming?

Why would a “right-wing answer to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” even be necessary? Those guys go after everybody (Howard Dean was still having poked at him over “the scream” when he was a guest on the show after the midterms last November.) Did Saturday Night Live ever pull punches during the Carter or Clinton Adminstrations? Perhaps some conservatives need to own up to the fact that they just want “their own” media that does not insist on equal time for countervailing points of view (not to say that the same isn’t true for some lefty posters on this site).

In reality they just ran out of any satirist material that leaned right. I mean, really, it is sad when comedy has become reality thanks to the fourth Reich. Therefore, how does one present comedic satire and make it promote right-side policies, when those policies are more comedic than the satirical ones in which the program could air? Stephen Colbert found this out when they had that press night with GW, and the only way Colbert could set himself apart from the administration was to be serious. I’m serious, the Bush Administration is such a comedy of errors it’s next to impossible being a comedian today, or a satirist. It’s a tough business, you know?

Jon Stewart’s comedy show not only tells the truth, but it makes fun of both Democrats and Republicans, as well as thowing in some self-deprecating humor, too.

Fox’s HHNH was just another right-wing attack vehicle, like Faux News itself.

Did they ever make fun of the Bush administration? Of Bush? Of Cheney? Of Gonzales? Of Rove?

Did Fox’s HHNH ever take a satirical swing at Rupert Murdoch or News Corp?

This is why Jon Stewart’s Daily Show and the Colbert Report are brilliant satirical products, while Fox’s HHNH was such a dud.

In other words, where Faux News and Fox’s HHNH are concerned, it’s hard to teach an attack dog new tricks.

Heres another reason why Fox’s stupid show failed.

Because it built its entire premise on attacking liberals. It is a republicans only show.

Stewart and Mahers shows all were and are POLITICAL satire, not republican satire. These were not shows built for just attacking republicans or any party. They were designed to mock politicians who screw up. Period.

Fox tried to make a show that mocks liberals because ALL the political commentary shows are mocking them now and thats another reason why it failed.

  216. BARTLEBEE says:

The show was built entirely on the premise of attacking a particular group of people based soley on their political affiliation, and nothing else, which is as infantile and ugly a premise as there could be to base a show on, so it failed.

Buckley himself said, Bush would’ve been tossed out of office years ago in any European nation, but here we let idiots like him and Murdoch destroy the country while we stand by like losers. What happened to the U.S.?

btw, everyone – be sure to tune in to Air America’s streaming internet broadcast – it’s on ALL DAY EVERY DAY

  250. WC says:

What the right-wing failed to grasp is Jon Stewart is funny not because he spins falsehoods but because he tells the truth

Heh…the rightwing can’t handle the truth.

  251. Jonah G says:

I have an idea. Let’s make a show that sticks it to the Man. We can put the already-empowered into the helm. How can it fail? . . . .

Actually, a rightwing satirical show could work, but it would have to be done by the denim and football contingent. I’m thinking of Merle Haggard sitting at a desk in a barn and proclaiming, in simple quietude, his confusion at the weirdness of leftwing counterculture. His version of the Stewart catchphrase “I got nuthin” would be “What the– folks I just don’t know.” It wouldn’t be cruel and sociopathic like Limbaugh & Coulter, it would be pleasant, bucolic humor without any vitriol at all. All the leftist parodies would be done with love, as if they were portraying the black sheep in their own families. A Prairie Home Companion for the right would be effective. They will never do this, because the power behind the Republican Party neither cares for the working class people they represent nor do they understand them.

  252. DuaneBidoux says:

If the King pretends to wear no clothes and you make fun of it to the crowd that is funny. If on the other hand, a homeless person has no clothes and you make fun of him…it usually is a little less than funny.

Even worse for the right wing crowd: they’ve taken part in stealing the clothes from the homeless person–and then they make fun of them.

  253. Thad says:

“What the right-wing failed to grasp is Jon Stewart is funny not because he spins falsehoods but because he tells the truth.”

    Indeed.

And The Daily Show is STILL better at making fun of liberals than this tripe was. There was an absolutely brilliant segment the other week making fun of some well-meaning but utterly clueless and incoherent hippies at Live Earth.

So that’s the other thing — Stewart lampoons EVERYBODY. He clearly leans to the left, but like you say, he’s not there to promote an agenda, he’s there to be FUNNY.

  254. SGT Higgins says:

So please explain how this showed failed??

    Comment by chris — August 15, 2007 @ 7:08 am

    chris,
sit down, this might come as a shock, but…..
the show failed because it WAS CANCELLED!

  255. Kay Hansen says:

Ironic, yes. But will they get it?

  256. Robert says:

  257. Sean says:

    The show was awful. Snoozefest.

Cancellation was the only possible option. It stood no chance…

    HHNH: “Barack Obama’s magazine: BO!”

    Daily Show: “Obamanation 08′!!” …

    Clearly, they were just outclassed.

Watching clips from the HHNH invoked the same nausea that Nickelodeon’s saturday night comedy shows would cause when I was a kid.

  258. annex says:

It failed because the left wouldn’t let it be funny! If only the liberal press had let the show do what it wanted it would have succeeded. It’s all Howard Dean’s fault!

Seriously, folks…those righwingers have no sense of humor. That’s the problem right there. They’re mean-spirited and humorless. It’s a degradation of the term “comedy” that this show was sold as such. Humor takes empathy and smarts, both totally lacking in the right.

  259. Swayze says:

HAHA I bet Bush was behind this because he was tired of being ridiculed. But, like all else that Bush has done, it has already failed miserably.

  260. Liberals can be just is intolerant says:

Im sitting here reading through these comments and all I see is nothing but tacking all conservatives as bigots and ignorant… but with no proof… and you claim to be so superior to everyone… how is this elitism any different from what the conservatives do (on a basic level)?

  261. Jonah G says:

To comment 275: Saying that the Daily Show is funnier than Rush Limbaugh is hardly “elitism…” I’m sorry if you perceive it that way.

  262. Danilo says:

The better show Fox to should come up with would be a porno showing Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh going at it in the nude, focusing on which one has the bigger adams’ apple. I definitely watch that!

  263. tom baker says:

262 – the difference is that we don’t run our lives, businesses, or government that way, and righties do

actions speak louder than words – ever hear that one????????????????

  264. tasteless says:

Retool the show? I guess that makes sense since they aren’t getting anywhere with the tools they already have…

  265. circusfifthfloor says:

    IDIOTS are not funny…nuff said…CFF

  266. icecycle says:

    Well, duh.
We Republicans do not have a sense of humor that I know of.

  267. Simon says:

They were competing against Fox News, what did they expect? The better Satire show won.

  268. Simon says:

To earlier comments having a bash at liberals/repubs/etc.

The problem isn’t with Republicans, it isn’t with Liberals. The problem is with the Bush administration. I have never seen a country so polorised and that blame can clearly go on who is in power at the moment helped along with Fox.

I would consider myself Liberal by the definition. I don’t like others being tortured, I believe we should all help each other to progress but at the same time I believe everyone should have the chance to become rich.

But I have numerous relations who are hard core republicans. They think Bush is a dick, but they vote republican because they won’t vote democrat. Actually most republicans I know are against Torture as well. Does that make them liberal?

The point is, people need to step away from name calling or trying say one label is better then the other. The truth is that Democrats + Republican parties don’t differ all that much.

You should be voting in the best person for the job. Not a label. And just because you didn’t vote for the guy doesn’t mean that guy gets to ignore you. The point of a president is to look after the health of country and EVERY American regardless.

    With Bush that isn’t happening.

  269. what the eff says:

nobody watches it because people who watch fox news don’t understand satire.

  270. Superdonut says:

Cancelled because Fox viewers aren’t smart enough to comprehend irony, satire and sarcasm–even when it’s employed against their enemies. Even the top programmers at Fox overestimated their viewers’ mental capabilities.

  271. Joe says:

Nobody watched it because people who watch Fox News work for a living rather than posting 271 messages to stupid blogs like this.

People who watch the Daily Show, can stay up late, because at best they are some San Francisco programmer who can stroll into work at 11am.

  272. james.m.k says:

    Joe said:

    > People who watch the Daily Show, can stay up late, because
    > at best they are some San Francisco programmer who can

    Jealous much?

  273. Jason says:

Looks like they were trying to make a parody of the Daily Show and satire of satire is only good for a skit on SNL. Oh and it was stupid as crap.

  274. Pavel says:

Foxnews gives real conservatives a bad name.

  275. JustMe says:

I’m Independent and I liked the show. Yea, it could have been funnier however I thought it was witty and going in the right direction. I can view humor at both sides of the fence however some people are just too lock stock and barrel to be open minded enough to as well.
