Continuing the administration’s outreach to sports stars, President Bush appointed Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy to be a Member of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. “The appointment has a term of two years with a time commitment of two in-person meetings per year and quarterly phone conversations with assigned committees.” Dungy has endeared himself to conservatives by helping fundraise for anti-gay, right-wing groups.
UPDATE: More from Towleroad.
I guess Buddy Ryan and Bobby Knight were busy.
August 15th, 2007 at 12:49 pmJust another reason to hate the Colts.
August 15th, 2007 at 12:51 pmI used to respect “Uncle Tony.”
It may be true that everybody has his price but to sell out to bushco is scraping the bottom.

August 15th, 2007 at 12:56 pmDamn.
Tony was an outstanding athlete at the U of MN and later played for the Broncos.
We here in MN have always hoped to get him back as a Vikings coach.
I don’t know much about him leaning toward wingnut ways, but I will always respect him as a person.
As I recall, his Son committed suicide a few years back, mixed up with drugs and other bad stuff. That had to be terribly hard to get through.
Whatever this group pursues, I’m sure Mr. Dungy will be an asset.
August 15th, 2007 at 12:56 pmNow I know why his son commited suicide
August 15th, 2007 at 12:56 pmAre you kidding? How can you folks hate Mr. Dungy?
August 15th, 2007 at 12:57 pmOh wait. He doen’t agree with you. That’s what “progressives” do. Hate. That’s the progressive way.
Why not, he did such a great job raising a son who committed suicide, he’s a perfect candidate to influence the likes of Shrub.
August 15th, 2007 at 12:57 pmVery good. I want the president to encourage diversity on our nation’s councils — both ideological and racial.

Weird huh, that a Lib/prog site would trash Conservative people.
Oh the nerve…
August 15th, 2007 at 1:07 pmIt’s not about hating Dungy, knuckleheads. It’s about the core issue that Dungy wouldn’t have a sniff at this committee if he hadn’t publicly staked out some neocon turf with his reservations about homosexuality. Bush routinely appoints like-minded (if he actually uses his own mind as opposed to someone else’s, which has never been clear) bobbleheads that are often underqualified. From the sounds of this committee the latter probably doesn’t apply, as this looks to be about as an important issue as flag-burning. If Dungy had said that he was tolerant of gay athletes I’m sure he wouldn’t have to worry about this committee distraction at all.
August 15th, 2007 at 1:09 pmNot conservative. By definition, a true conservative would mind their own business. Interfering in the private lives of others has nothing to do with conservatism.
August 15th, 2007 at 1:11 pmScrew minding our own business! Fascists want a Corporate run government where EVERYTHING you do is THEIR business.
August 15th, 2007 at 1:13 pmTo teach Bush some ‘Defense’…!!

August 15th, 2007 at 1:19 pmIs there a way for me to throw rotten tomatoes through this link? After all, it is a series of tubes.
August 15th, 2007 at 1:27 pmThe first problem with the trolls argument is that they think Bush is a conservative. Fu*king idiots.
August 15th, 2007 at 1:28 pmBeing a conservative and being a Bush supporter should not be all inclusive. In fact, being a conservative should mean being against most everything Bush has pushed down the american publics throat.
No fiscal responsibility. None.
More intrusive govt. that’s grown, not shrunk like a true conservative wants.
This administration is closer to Satanism than it is to conservatism.
August 15th, 2007 at 1:28 pmIf it wasn’t for Peyton Manning, Dungy would still be just another mediocre coach for a mediocre dome team.

Thanks for reminding me, I’ve got to go clean the barn now……
August 15th, 2007 at 1:51 pmDungy carries the same guilt as Brit Hume.
August 15th, 2007 at 2:00 pmHope Dingy he gets his leg snapped in two on a sideline hit.
August 15th, 2007 at 2:10 pmDungy supporting Bush is no surprise. There are a lot of athletes/coaches, both black and white, who are conservative because of their homophobic religious views. Prime example – Reggie White.
August 15th, 2007 at 2:16 pmDoes anybody know what the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation will do, exactly? Will it actually promote service and civic participation in a “thousand points of light” kind of way? Or is it just something that Bush sycophants can put on their resumes?
Who else is on this council?
August 15th, 2007 at 2:16 pmTony Dungee is a nice person but he is devoutly religious – a big downer. Devoutly religious people are the most dangerous animal on this planet and should not be allowed near politics or politicians.
We have only to look at the Bush administration, the neocons and radical Islam to understand this.
August 15th, 2007 at 2:21 pmMy gawd people …
You know, I’m about as liberal as it gets, but some of the comments on here make me sick.
Dungy’s views are his own, and if he wants to “work” for someone whose views match his own, that’s his choice.
We certainly have the right to criticize it (free speech and all), and I for one disagree 100% with his opinion on religion, gays, and a host of other issues. And as a Chiefs fan, I also hate the Colts with every fiber of my being (see: 1995; 2003).
But to say his son committed suicide because of his dad?
As a father, that’s way, way over the line IMHO.
How about we show a little class?

I agree with your comment about the devoutly religious — somewhat. It’s true that one can become devout to the point where they worship their religion more than they do God Himself. That can warp minds beyond reality — feeling a false sense of “enlightenment” more than everyone else, placing oneself above worldly conventions and society, and feeling an entitlement to judge others.
However, one can be devout without being dangerous. Mother Teresa, for example, walked the walk while she talked it and she never forgot whom she served. And, one can be dangerous without being particularly devout — Karl Rove being a good example.

August 15th, 2007 at 3:43 pmIsn’t that interesting, Mr. Toliver?
How long have you been posting here? My guess: Since 3:17pm today
The real deal here is Dungy’s Faith and the Indianapolis Colts’ over the top ‘Praise the Lord’ messages after their playoff and Super Bowl wins….The wingnuts and jesus freaks are happy to hijack and use sports to promote their agenda of Christian Fascism. The Colts’ owner, Irsay, is someone else that you may see in an Official Role. It will be interesting to see if there is any pushback from the NFL when Dungy and others pervert the League to promote their message. An interesting hint of what could be coming occurred when an Indianapolis Church tried to hold a youth rally around airing of the Super Bowl game. The NFL denied the use of the broadcast unless the Church paid up…Tip of the Iceberg.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:01 pmHey, Dungy is a rich bastard — like all Republicans, the religious bit is just cover for their greed.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:07 pmThis Church acted un-Christian like and stole the broadcast from the NFL:

August 15th, 2007 at 4:24 pmI think you can tell where the NFL is headed – Roger Goodell, new Commissioner is married to Jane Skinner of FOX NEWS. The Wikipedia entry for him mentions that the Goodell family was the inspiration for the awful NBC show “The Book of Daniel”.
I guess the league will eventually allow Churches to convert youth to Christianity under the guise of watching a game at the Church hall….I wonder what Michael Vick thinks about the excess coverage that his dog fighting woes get on FOX NEWS – not sure if Jane Skinner ever covered it though….

Is that inmate Dr. Evil, perchance?
August 15th, 2007 at 7:30 pmIs that why he wants $63,000,000,000 billion?

Sorry DRxJ, but I’ve been here for months and usually post a variation on the “you cats are a bunch of hatefull MFers” theme.

Because modern liberalism is deranged.
