The unthinkable had happened. Thousands of our citizens were dead as a result of a terrorist act. Most of us didn't know how to express our feelings, so we turned to television where we were exposed repeatedly to planes hitting the towers. Time moved on, but there was a surreal quality about it. Overwhelmed, we tried to go through our daily routine despite feelings of a vulnerability which we had never before felt. On Thursday, September 20, 2001, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart returned. Many tuned in wondering perhaps how this show could continue. What could Jon Stewart, the king of satire, possibly have to say to us at a time like this? Jon's opening segment was noticeably subdued from the start as many of his regular listeners could tell. What followed was a genuine outpouring of grief mixed with a powerful message of hope. Jon Stewart showed his audience that night that it was okay to grieve. But he didn't leave it at that. He provided a antidote to the despair. He gave us the courage to carry on.
