The “war here at home” against illegal immigrants is “even more deadly than the war in Iraq and Afghanistan,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said yesterday. Orcinus notes “that the crime rate among Latino immigrants is lower than that of the general population, and most other ethnic groups as well, including whites.”

I have no doubt that for someone with a terrorist agenda this could be true, but it’s a real stretch to imagine it applies to undocumented aliens as a default.

Um… the problem with undocumented, or illegal, immigrants is that they come across the border even though it’s closed to them. Build a fence? They climb it. Build a really, really, really high fence? They tunnel underneath. Closed borders mean nothing.

August 15th, 2007 at 3:11 pmGingrich is–as usual–100% correct because unlike progressive schizoids, he uses actual facts and logic in his arguments. Illegal immigration is deadlier than Iraq/Afghanistan by the very fact that open borders (which libtards insist on) lead to increased risk of domestic terror attacks. Further galling is the liberal disease of sanctuary cities which protect illegal immigrants who murder Americans, deal drugs, and engage in other criminality. A statistic says that somethinig like 30% of criminals in American prisons are actually illegal immigrants. This attests to the fact of how deadly their influence in the country is. Curse Demoncrats and Bush for persisting to push through the amnesty bill in June, especially when that would’ve actually let illegals stay in the US while sending remittances back home, while doing nothing for border enforcement! Remember progressives, illegals cost Americans jobs, drive up costs of healthcare, lower public school quality and increase crime.

August 15th, 2007 at 3:29 pmWe talk a great deal about “closing the borders”, but the fact is that no matter what we do to block entry at our borders, people who want to come into the United States will find a way.
So why do most of the people who enter the country illegally do so? While Newt would have you believe the number one reason is to commit violent crimes against Americans, the real reason is to look for work — hopefully being able to save up some money to send back to family back home.
So wouldn’t you think the obvious thing to do would be to go after the people who are HIRING these undocumented residents? Of course. Only we love our undocumented workers. We love having people who will work long hours for low pay and won’t complain about it. We love them so much that we will pay lobbyists large sums of money to make sure the law fixates on border fences and not on employers.
Until we address the root of the problem, it’s just so much noise.

I don’t see too many jobless immigrants around here. There’s a high supply because there’s a high demand. If we want to control the influx, perhaps we should take a look at our policies in Latin America that have kept countries in debt and kept their citizens in poverty.
The corporations win either way. They “milk the system” by controlling natural resources and utilities in South and Central America on the one hand, and taking on low-wage immigrant labor when they cross the border into the U.S. Between the carrot of bribes and IMF loans and the stick of assassinations and coups, the CIA jackals keep the Latin American leaders from doing anything to fix the situation.
Nothing is going to happen to stop illegal immigration unless we fix the root causes.

The solution is to force all American companies, when operating in states with lower minimum protections then America offers, to operate as if they were in America.
This would either raise the working conditions of those states to a point where eventually their economies would be strong enough to make them not want to come to America illegally (You don’t have much of an illegal immigration problem from Canada for example) or it would concentrate enough of America’s manufacturing back into America as to make the immigrants more desirable.
Either way, Americans win.

Psst… Condi? She’s a CONSERVATIVE YOU MORON!!!
Further, we aren’t pretending anything on Clinton you can go back and review the news clips yourself if you want.
Oh, and as to being on the wrong side of every issue? Like supporting a war based on lies was the right side? Like hiring a political lackey to head FEMA was a bright idea? Like cutting funds to the levies in New Orleans, after 2004 was a record year for hurricanes, so you could build a bridge to nowhere in Alaska was a wonderful move?
The sum total of what Clinton achieved was: World admiration, America’s first anti-foreign terror measures, huge surplusses, and an economy which boomed.
The sum total of what Bush achieved will always go down in history as: Two wars. Two major disasters. A wrecked signature American city. A inflation adjusted deficit in 2004 which is the third worst in America’s history. Leaving America wide open to poisoned Chinese goods (You know why they think they can get away with it? Because you owe them money. Lots of it.) Isolating America from its allies and uniting America’s enemies, and, lastly, no Osama Bin Laden.

Comment by Bruce Gorton — August 15, 2007 @ 4:02 pm
I agree wholeheartedly. However, it’s much more easily said than done. And I believe it needs to be a global effort, not just the United States. If we mandate that American companies adhere to certain labor standards that no other country demands of its own corporations, companies are just going to find loopholes. They’ll subcontract all their factories through overseas subsidiaries and trade the finished goods through offshore banks so they can skirt around the requirements.
And then there’s enforcement – companies have no incentive to police themselves, U.S. inspectors can’t simply drop in on an overseas factory, and local officials in developing countries are extremely bribable. And the corporatocracy is so entrenched in both U.S. and foreign governments that neither has much incentive to change a system that’s profitable for a few.
The government can’t do it alone, nor caninternational organizations. I think a large part of the campaign has to come from us, the consumers. We need to begin demanding that the companies we buy from adhere to fair labor standards, whether they’re in Boston or Bangladesh.

August 15th, 2007 at 4:59 pmThe trouble with the study Orcinus cites (consider the source, the immigration lawyers association) is that it lumps legal and illegal immigrants in together. It may well be that legal immigrant Latinos have a lower crime rate than average — remember, for one thing, that you need to have a clean police record to receive an immigrant visa — but it says nothing about illegal Latinos. According to the Feds, “criminal aliens account for over 29 percent of prisoners in Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities and a higher share of all federal prison inmates.” (That’s from FAIR, so consider that source, too.) So perhaps illegal aliens (Latino or otherwise) DO have a significantly higher crime rate than others, just like those nasty nativists say. I don’t profess to know. What I do know, though, is that those who support “immigrants’ rights” too often lump together the two entirely different classes of immigrant, legal and illegal. It’s a sloppy and disingenous way to make an argument. Kinda like “We have to fight them (Iraqis) there so we don’t have to fight them (al-Qaeda) here.”

Please reconsider using the phrase “illegal immigrants.” No one else, who is accused of breaking the law, is labeled “illegal.” If someone drives drunk or snorts coke, he/she isn’t called illegal. Only after she/he is convicted of the crime is the word “criminal” used (or in some cases, the words “President of the US” are used).
People who enter or stay in the US illegally, are “undocumented.” No human is illegal, even if their actions are. And based on current statistics, more documented peoples’ actions are illegal than are those of the undocumented.

That doesn’t matter, though. The study compares foreign-born incarceration rates with native-born incarceration rates, and for each group the rate for foreign-born individuals is low. The percentage of undocumented foreign-born individuals must by definition be lower still.
The data itself comes from the U.S. Census Bureau, so it’s only as biased as the census is. I’d even argue that the incarceration rates for foreign-born individuals is even lower in reality, since the census probably undercounts illegal immigrants.

August 15th, 2007 at 9:56 pmToasterhead, your comment makes no sense. Even supposing all foreign-born persons are counted correctly, if legal immigrants (nearly 40 million) have a low, low crime rate and illegal immigrants (oops, sorry, the undocumented) — 12 million — have a high crime rate, the crime rate of the “foreign born” lumped together will still be lower than the average. But that doesn’t get to the point of legal/illegal (er, documented/undocumented).

August 16th, 2007 at 12:06 amI have a question. Why is it that the liberal candidates for Pres say in one speech that illegals are necessary to our economy, however in the next speech they say how this is the worst economy and they will creat jobs. Why not send the illegals home, create demand for manual labor, which increases wages, and will put AMERICANS to work. just a thought from a simple minded man
August 16th, 2007 at 12:11 amDr Smirithiason
Because the jobs which are currently available are of the bottom rung-dead-end variety, and the jobs America needs, are more of the career variety. The problem is not entirely quantity of work, it is quality of work.
