Soltz: Cheney ‘out to lunch’ on protecting America.
This afternoon on MSNBC Hardball, Iraq war veteran Jon Soltz of VoteVets debated Sal Russo of the right-wing Move America Forward about the merits of Dick Cheney’s national security views. Soltz argued Cheney was “out to lunch when it comes to protecting America, supporting the military, destroying al Qaeda.” Russo responded, “Dick Cheney is one of the finest men that I’ve ever met.” Soltz shot back, “The difference between you and I is real simple: You’re a Republican communications strategist; I’m an Iraq war veteran.” Watch it:

If Cheney cared for the troops he would have made sure that they had the body armor, the up armored humvees and equipment. If he cared for the troops he wouldn’t have sent them to fight a war of choice. Soltz having served in combat has more credibility than Cheney or this guy.

From May to September 2003, Soltz served as a Captain during Operation Iraqi Freedom, deploying logistics convoys with the 1st Armored Division. During 2005, Soltz was mobilized for 365 days at Fort Dix New Jersey, training soldiers for combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. He also served his country with distinction in the Kosovo Campaign as a Tank Platoon Leader between June and December 2000. Soltz is a graduate of Washington & Jefferson College with dual degree in Political Science and History. He has completed graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.

God I wish people would stop calling what is going on in Iraq a “war”. It ceased to be a war when combat operations ended. Now it is an occupation of a country that is in the middle of a Civil War. And, there is no way to win an occupation. General Betrayus even admits it. He said the other day that he thinks we will need to “occupy” Iraq for another 9-10 years for it to be stable.
What gives us the right to occupy another country? If China invaded our country, was occupying our country and telling us how to behave and how to run our government, every person in this country would be fighting them tooth and nail. How is what we have done and are doing in Iraq any different?

Cheney is an incompetent who never served in any war. I don’t know much about Soltz’s competence, but he seems level-headed, and he actually served in the military, in Iraq.

I think that’s why facts are needed in these debates, not merely opinions. Saying “I think things are getting better in Iraq” is an opinion. Saying “there has been 56% less attacks in this year” is a fact (and this is just a for-instance, ok? I’m making this number up).
Still, all other things being equal, I’d tend to believe a soldier on the ground more than a Keyboard Kommando that hasn’t left the country, regarding war issues.

How many times must I point out that the authorization congress passed called for using force as a last possible resort after all other avenues were exhausted. It stipulated that the UN had to agree and that the inspectors had to finish their work. And, it stipulated that Bush had to come back to congress with written evidence of Saddam’s complicity in the 9-11 attack. Bush completely ignored the terms of the authorization, kicked out the inspectors and invaded. The only reason people aren’t fully aware of this is that the media didn’t report it. But, go back and read the authorization yourselves and then can this “congress authorized the war” b.s.

Actually he did…..
He lied to Congress…… He told them that he would ONLY use the AUMF as a last resort, when in fact it was his first.
He was REQUIRED to get a second authorization from the UN, but did not!!!!
There are plenty of things Bush did with this AUMF that was illegal as well….. To say “he did nothing wrong” is far from correct.

r-you are correct! Bush never declared war. He got approval from Congress for more time for the IAEA inspectors, and to go BACK to the UN for an update. Then, he said FUKUM and gave the inspectors 48 hours to leave Iraq(right after they reported they had found NO WMDs.)

- He was to return to the UN for a SECOND authorization from them. He did not because he was ILLEGALLY wiretapping the UN and knew he did not have the votes from the.
- He LIED to Congress, as he told them this authorization would be used as a last resort….. When in fact it was his first resort.
- He Falsified the information provided to the Congress, which they used to authorize the AUMF.
- He used White Fospherus material in the attacks, which are against the international treaties we have signed.

So I look at him laying there without his belt, mmmm, so I pull his shirt above his head and pull his pants down beyond his feet, and roll him over and put his, “Libs (heart) terrorists” sign on top of him. Many, many people passe him laughing. I did not like it, but it felt good, my bad.
