Last week, during an interview with the Anchorage Daily News editorial board, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) was asked how, in light of ongoing federal investigations into him, he could “be effective in Congress.” Instead of addressing the question, Stevens attacked the paper, claiming it was “destroying” his reputation:
You’re destroying it. More people are repeating what you’re writing in your paper than anything else in the country. This paper has caused me more difficulty, and I’ve told you that before, than anything else. You’ve created me as the senator-for-life. You’ve been hanging me weekly. [...]
I’ve spent hours here with you here in the past, and I’ve never seen any result of it at all. … This paper has done nothing but try to assassinate me.
(HT: TPMmuckraker.)
Rant on, lunatic Senator from AK.
August 15th, 2007 at 3:49 pmBOOOOO FRICKEN HOOO
TOO BAD YOU’RE SO OLD! You deserve to rot in jail for a long time.
August 15th, 2007 at 3:49 pm“assassinate”?
Is it that time of the month Senator?
August 15th, 2007 at 3:51 pmGod, let there be a clip of this to be posted on youtube. Between refusing to require oil company execs to be sworn for senate testimony, his detailed technical explanation of the “tubes” of the internets, and this kind of paranoia, you’d have a lovely little trilogy to show the people of Alaska the truth behind their chosen leaders.
August 15th, 2007 at 3:52 pmRoll it and stuff it, Buddy. I hear you have just the tube to insert it in too.
August 15th, 2007 at 3:55 pmAll the progressives here are anti-American because of their refusal to abide by the US system of law which says that one is innocent until proven guilty. The progressives here are maltreating Senator Stevens as though he was convicted; he’s merely the target of an investigation. Secondly, the only bad misdeed Stevens has done is to insert lots of pork into spending bills, but even this misdeed is eclipsed by Democrat Robert KKK Byrd who is the KING of pork. It’s also interesting to note that many more Democratic wrongdoers are involved in ethics ordeals or criminal investigations. Some are William Jefferson from New Orleans; Allan B. Mollohan from WV; Menendez from NJ…and the list of Dem wrongdoers is a mile long.
August 15th, 2007 at 3:58 pmTeddy, Teddy, Teddy. If the noose fits, wear it!

August 15th, 2007 at 4:02 pmWarm up the 4×4 Whaaaaaambulance waaaaa you lying old piece of sh!t
August 15th, 2007 at 4:02 pm#6. The fact that so many Senators/Reps from both sides of the aisle are facing so many ethics/legal issues is sad.
The difference is that most Repugs “stand by their man” through thick and thin, but Progs look at crooked Dems and want them out of office.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:06 pmBender, the posters here (and the paper in question) are practicing their patriotism by exercising their right to freedom of speech. We maltreat nobody. You are assuming far too much. Both on what is perceived by the progressives and by neglecting the divissive manner in which the Sen. had acted through his many years in congress.
You are ignoring Foley, Frist, DeLay, Cunningham, Ney, Meyers (? Harriet), the AG, Libby, etc……..
It’s safe to assume there are less than honorable people on both side. It’s also safe to assume you can’t handle that yet.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:06 pmSo, a newspaper asks him a valid question and he goes off on a paranoid rant that everyone’s out to get him… and then all the trolls decide to join in the paranoid fantasy….
it really is like watching lemmings…..
August 15th, 2007 at 4:07 pmGood points bender…
August 15th, 2007 at 4:07 pmIf he is guilty then prosecute him. It is common for politicians to lie and/or go off in a rant…Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon, William Jefferson, Howard Dean….just to name a few
August 15th, 2007 at 4:10 pmand the list of Dem wrongdoers is a mile long.

August 15th, 2007 at 4:17 pmI have to say I disagree with that assessment. Dems look the other way about their fellow party members wrongdoings then Reps. do.
Wasn’t it Pat Robertson who said on his TV show, that if he thinks if someone is trying to assassinate him, then it really shoud be done?
August 15th, 2007 at 4:17 pmlook the other way-comment by mizuno. That is really rich, considering that then speaker of the House Fatso Hastert covered up the Foley child-molesting scandal.
mizzo- you are dumber than a sack of pet rocks.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:20 pmtwas not the sword the took the life of the mighty teddy, twas the pen. assignation by writing implement, ie: newsprint.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:21 pmSenator Ted seems to have forgotten that all ADN is doing is reporting on the Senator shooting himself. Repignicans. They all ducked when brains were handed out .
August 15th, 2007 at 4:21 pmMD; eeewww. I would not be caught dead in a tie like that, much less wear it around in public.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:22 pm#15. Lets not forget George Bush, Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Paul Wolfowitz, Duke Cunningham, Bob Nye, the former Governor of Ohio….damn my fingers are tired typing all of the lying Repignicans you forgot to include in your list.
Oh, right, J. Steven Griles, Jack Abramoff…..the list goes on.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:23 pmUncle Ho
I had a typo…more likely too look the other way….
no need for name calling…
August 15th, 2007 at 4:23 pmI have to say I disagree with that assessment.

Thus proving you’re an idiot.
Dems look the other way about their fellow party members wrongdoings then Reps. do.
–Comment by mizuno
So when, exactly, did the Dems of the 110th Congress try to change the ethics rules to keep a fellow Dem in power?
When, exactly, did Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi cover up for an online predator?
And do you get paid to lie about things easily refuted, or are you just that stupid?
August 15th, 2007 at 4:24 pm.
Attack the messenger.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:24 pmTake no responsibility for your actions.
Jimmy Carter, the whole Clinton administration, JFK, Nixon, Ford, Eisenhower, Reagan
They all lie!
August 15th, 2007 at 4:25 pmThe scary part is that the guy apparently has a closet full of Hulk ties.
Not sure if those were paid by some oil company in exchange for kickbacks, though.
.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:25 pmassignation. maybe it fits better than assassination? my freudian sword attacks the pen
August 15th, 2007 at 4:26 pmMD-
Ruby Ridge, Waco, Clintongate, Elian Gonzales, Iran during Carter’s administration, William Jefferson. Just a few.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:29 pmUmm, okay, so does that make me a ninja?
August 15th, 2007 at 4:30 pmIt’s also interesting to note that many more Democratic wrongdoers are involved in ethics ordeals or criminal investigations.
________________________________________
Many Democratic politicians, who neocons think are doing wrong, are indeed involved in ethics ordeals or criminal investigations – as the investigators and critics.
So, the troll came close. He might have hit the target if he wasn’t trying to drink the kool-aid at the same time.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:31 pm“The law” is supposed to assume ones innocence until proven guilty.
The electorate doesn’t have to. It has the right to judge based on the past record and accomplishments. If the Senator has something to say that would help his case with the people, then let him come forward and say it, rather than hide behind the “innocent until proven guitly” cloak of denial.
Don’t forget. OJ Simpson was found “not guilty”, but not many people believe that either.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:31 pmmizzo; you want some cheese with your whine? You gave a nondenial denial. You did not try refute the fact that Hastert covered-up the Foley scandal in order to preserve a Republican hold on his seat.
Get a life. just sticks and stones
August 15th, 2007 at 4:32 pmPLC,
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:32 pmPLC – I agree
August 15th, 2007 at 4:33 pmPLC,
Great post. Trolls are spinners.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:33 pmGee, I have a lot of admirers! LOL.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:34 pmUncle Ho
I dont side with Dems or Reps. I dont like most policies by either. Dimes worth of difference. Whoever holds the power does pork spending, unethical behavior, lies and cheats, gives weapons to future enemies, and then blames the other party for doing it.
Hastert, that story I dont know much about. I admit that. However, I am not taking your word for it since, of course, you do favor one party over another.
I don’t follow leaders I just do my best to keep an eye on the parking meters.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:37 pmSo you list three things that have nothing to do with anything we’re discussing (Ruby Ridge, Waco, Elian Gonzalez), and a guy who became irrelevant before he even left office (Carter).
The other two you listed are quite interesting …
Clintongate: Ah yes … the $40 million witch hunt in which a Dem-appointed AG gave a GOP “independent” investigator carte blanche to investigate every little thing a Dem president had ever done. Yes … what a stunning example of “protecting their own.”
William Jefferson: Ah yes … the guy who was stripped of all his Congressional power by his own party. Again, what a stunning example of Dems “protecting their own.”
Methinks you need to up your meds. Seriously. There’s something wrong with you.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:38 pmRethugs — the louder they squeal, the closer you are to nailing their saggy hides to the wall. Looks like Teddy’s just a shriek or two from indictment. I’m betting he’s hoping he doesn’t have to bunk beneath Karl in the federal graybar hotel.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:43 pm‘Scuze me, but getting back to Ted Stevens:
Cry me an oily greasy salmon-less polluted river,
August 15th, 2007 at 4:45 pmTed “On the Take” Stevens
MD-
Just give Pelosi some time…hell, Sheehan is on her white horse to save the day.
Clintongate…what a great witch hunt.
Also, those missing FBI files that Hillary had magically appear years later…where…her family home.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:47 pmI wear mizuno golf shoes. They don’t have an informed opinion either.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:47 pmlet us not forget about the great Ted Kennedy too
August 15th, 2007 at 4:48 pmPLC
Thanks for that PLC. I probably got a kickback for that.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:48 pmJust follow your great leaders blindly.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:50 pmNancy Pelosi did not make sure all her constitutes were gettin minimum wage increase either. It took her enemy party to point that out to her.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:52 pmHave a great day all. Nice chatting it up.
GOD BLESS AMERICA.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:52 pmIt is amazing how far corrupt GOP members will go to distract attention away from their crimes. The fact is that both the FBI and the IRS have raided Stevens’ home. The FBI is even investigating his son. Stevens is as corrupt as they come.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:53 pmmizuno: Spamming the board with nonsense, providing no evidence, and moving goal posts since … well, forever.
You still never pointed out a single instance of Dems blindly “protecting their own” — lots of them protecting themselves, but never, say, changing the rules to keep them in power.
And I’ll meet your Ted Kennedy and raise you a Laura Bush.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:57 pmIf Stevens can’t take the heat, he needs to stay out of the kitchen. Everybody in elected office will have his/her detractors — especially when it appears they may be committing crimes.
Stevens needs to get over it or retire.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:58 pmIf They are trying to assassinate him they are lousy shots. I mean really. Cheney would have dropped him by now.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:59 pmwe’ll try ta get along wit out cha, Miss 1
August 15th, 2007 at 4:59 pmTypical GOP trick is to attack the messenger. In this case the messenger is truth as in most cases. Truth is his real enemy. Just another corrupt GOP hack who’s days in congress are numbered now.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:59 pmIf he can’t take a tough question from a newspaper reporter, how can he be effective in the war on terra?
August 15th, 2007 at 5:03 pmNancy Pelosi did not make sure all her constitutes were gettin minimum wage increase either. It took her enemy party to point that out to her.
And I guess it would take me to point out to you that American Samoa has been exempt from federal minimum wage laws for many years, including 12 years of Republican majority. Currently wage floors in American Samoa are set by the US Department of Labor. I’m not sure how the wages in American Samoa are relevant to you, nor is your point valid given that Republicans didn’t want a minimum wage increase for ANYONE in the U.S. So you really don’t give a damn, nor does your party.
August 15th, 2007 at 5:04 pmIt seems to me he doesn’t need any help getting ‘assassinated,’ he’s doing the job all by himself. Why is it that when ANYBODY gets caught doing something somewhat illegal, or unethical, they blame everyone else for picking on them. It’s really sad, the saddest part of this is, is that they are the people who are supposed to be doing what WE the people want them to do. They are doing everything but that.
August 15th, 2007 at 5:21 pmmizuno: “Hastert, that story I dont know much about. I admit that.”
Then STFU dumbass!
August 15th, 2007 at 5:40 pmPoor Ted. It’s not just those newspapers. It’s also those troubling tubes in the internets.
August 15th, 2007 at 5:41 pmol’ted’s quite the crybaby – maybe john gibson will jet up to AK for an “intimate interview” and “comfort” him, considering how they’ve both been so unfairly victimized….
August 15th, 2007 at 7:22 pmTed Stephens always sounds like a grouch.
August 15th, 2007 at 7:23 pmAh, yes… Stevens’ ethical issues are the fault of the newspaper that brought them to the attention of the public.
Just like the Republicans cried for blood when the revelations of torture in Abu Ghraib came to light, insisting the revelations jeopardized national security -but not a word on how torture is illegal.
See how the conservative mind works? All misdeeds are ok as long as they’re done in secrecy. If made known, smear the messenger.
August 15th, 2007 at 9:39 pmIt appears that among other things, Stevens has a guilty conscience, so he attacks the questioner — isn’t that what they do? When they don’t have an answer, they turn the argument away from themselves.
I think it is becoming more clear as the weeks/months pass, that it is way past time for him to retire. He is well on the way of his decline; he has to go.
The trolls here are so thin-skinned — they think we are like them. We are ready to condemn Democrats for their faults, and we do so (the trolls just don’t pay attention); it is the repugs who are unable to see the faults of their own, they are the ones who cannot take criticism, they are the ones who demand lock-step head-bowing worship from their members. Just like Stevens, when asked a legitimate question, the trolls here turn the argument against Dems, because they have no legitimate defense of Stevens.
It’s just another version of “Clinton did it too!” Waah, waah, waah.
August 15th, 2007 at 9:44 pmThrow the bum out!
August 16th, 2007 at 1:07 amMaybe he’ll be a casualty in the War on Gibson.
August 16th, 2007 at 1:21 amIt is a crying shame that newspapers aren’t better shots, at least put an end to our misery of listening tho this psycho hack moron. Ted, get the f*ck out!
August 16th, 2007 at 1:44 amMake no mistake about Ted’s tactics when it comes to addressing journalists doing their jobs: Ted’s notion of “democracy” would eliminate the basic premise of an informed electorate. My perspective as an Alaskan resident for the last 24 years, has been Alaska’s cowboy Delegation has had a meaningful relationship with Alaska’s Public Radio Network. Ted and Don stay in the saddle by keeping APRN cowed into submission under the threat of budget castration. Anchorage Daily News continually distinguishes itself as honest journalism while APRN willingly self-castrates its professional duties to the public in fear of Ted’s budget knife. That’s why Alaska’s Delegation stay in power so long. Besides, most Alaskans worry more about their addictions to pork than the corruption necessary to keep it coming their way.
August 16th, 2007 at 2:34 amStevens’ temper tantrums will only help his democratic opponent in 2008. With these corruption charges democrats will be able to pick up his seat.
August 16th, 2007 at 2:35 am
