Stevens: Newspaper trying ‘to assassinate me.’

Last week, during an interview with the Anchorage Daily News editorial board, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) was asked how, in light of ongoing federal investigations into him, he could “be effective in Congress.” Instead of addressing the question, Stevens attacked the paper, claiming it was “destroying” his reputation:

You’re destroying it. More people are repeating what you’re writing in your paper than anything else in the country. This paper has caused me more difficulty, and I’ve told you that before, than anything else. You’ve created me as the senator-for-life. You’ve been hanging me weekly. [...]

I’ve spent hours here with you here in the past, and I’ve never seen any result of it at all. … This paper has done nothing but try to assassinate me.

Rant on, lunatic Senator from AK.

TOO BAD YOU’RE SO OLD! You deserve to rot in jail for a long time.

  3. CD says:

    “assassinate”?

Is it that time of the month Senator?

  4. mongo says:

God, let there be a clip of this to be posted on youtube. Between refusing to require oil company execs to be sworn for senate testimony, his detailed technical explanation of the “tubes” of the internets, and this kind of paranoia, you’d have a lovely little trilogy to show the people of Alaska the truth behind their chosen leaders.

  5. Menehune says:

Roll it and stuff it, Buddy. I hear you have just the tube to insert it in too.

  6. Bender says:

All the progressives here are anti-American because of their refusal to abide by the US system of law which says that one is innocent until proven guilty. The progressives here are maltreating Senator Stevens as though he was convicted; he’s merely the target of an investigation. Secondly, the only bad misdeed Stevens has done is to insert lots of pork into spending bills, but even this misdeed is eclipsed by Democrat Robert KKK Byrd who is the KING of pork. It’s also interesting to note that many more Democratic wrongdoers are involved in ethics ordeals or criminal investigations. Some are William Jefferson from New Orleans; Allan B. Mollohan from WV; Menendez from NJ…and the list of Dem wrongdoers is a mile long.

#6. The fact that so many Senators/Reps from both sides of the aisle are facing so many ethics/legal issues is sad.

The difference is that most Repugs “stand by their man” through thick and thin, but Progs look at crooked Dems and want them out of office.

  12. hellinabucket says:

Bender, the posters here (and the paper in question) are practicing their patriotism by exercising their right to freedom of speech. We maltreat nobody. You are assuming far too much. Both on what is perceived by the progressives and by neglecting the divissive manner in which the Sen. had acted through his many years in congress.

You are ignoring Foley, Frist, DeLay, Cunningham, Ney, Meyers (? Harriet), the AG, Libby, etc……..

It’s safe to assume there are less than honorable people on both side. It’s also safe to assume you can’t handle that yet.

  13. raynman says:

So, a newspaper asks him a valid question and he goes off on a paranoid rant that everyone’s out to get him… and then all the trolls decide to join in the paranoid fantasy….

it really is like watching lemmings…..

    Good points bender…

  15. mizuno says:

If he is guilty then prosecute him. It is common for politicians to lie and/or go off in a rant…Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon, William Jefferson, Howard Dean….just to name a few

I have to say I disagree with that assessment. Dems look the other way about their fellow party members wrongdoings then Reps. do.

Wasn’t it Pat Robertson who said on his TV show, that if he thinks if someone is trying to assassinate him, then it really shoud be done?

  21. Uncle Ho says:

look the other way-comment by mizuno. That is really rich, considering that then speaker of the House Fatso Hastert covered up the Foley child-molesting scandal.

mizzo- you are dumber than a sack of pet rocks.

    Thus proving you’re an idiot.

Dems look the other way about their fellow party members wrongdoings then Reps. do.
    –Comment by mizuno

So when, exactly, did the Dems of the 110th Congress try to change the ethics rules to keep a fellow Dem in power?

When, exactly, did Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi cover up for an online predator?

And do you get paid to lie about things easily refuted, or are you just that stupid?

Many Democratic politicians, who neocons think are doing wrong, are indeed involved in ethics ordeals or criminal investigations – as the investigators and critics.

So, the troll came close. He might have hit the target if he wasn’t trying to drink the kool-aid at the same time.

  35. Art says:

“The law” is supposed to assume ones innocence until proven guilty.
The electorate doesn’t have to. It has the right to judge based on the past record and accomplishments. If the Senator has something to say that would help his case with the people, then let him come forward and say it, rather than hide behind the “innocent until proven guitly” cloak of denial.

Don’t forget. OJ Simpson was found “not guilty”, but not many people believe that either.

  36. Uncle Ho says:

mizzo; you want some cheese with your whine? You gave a nondenial denial. You did not try refute the fact that Hastert covered-up the Foley scandal in order to preserve a Republican hold on his seat.

Get a life. just sticks and stones

  41. mizuno says:

    Uncle Ho

I dont side with Dems or Reps. I dont like most policies by either. Dimes worth of difference. Whoever holds the power does pork spending, unethical behavior, lies and cheats, gives weapons to future enemies, and then blames the other party for doing it.

Hastert, that story I dont know much about. I admit that. However, I am not taking your word for it since, of course, you do favor one party over another.

I don’t follow leaders I just do my best to keep an eye on the parking meters.

  42. MD says:

Ruby Ridge, Waco, Clintongate, Elian Gonzales, Iran during Carter’s administration, William Jefferson. Just a few.

So you list three things that have nothing to do with anything we’re discussing (Ruby Ridge, Waco, Elian Gonzalez), and a guy who became irrelevant before he even left office (Carter).

The other two you listed are quite interesting …

Clintongate: Ah yes … the $40 million witch hunt in which a Dem-appointed AG gave a GOP “independent” investigator carte blanche to investigate every little thing a Dem president had ever done. Yes … what a stunning example of “protecting their own.”

William Jefferson: Ah yes … the guy who was stripped of all his Congressional power by his own party. Again, what a stunning example of Dems “protecting their own.”

Methinks you need to up your meds. Seriously. There’s something wrong with you.

  43. NoOneYouKnow says:

  49. mizuno says:

  50. mizuno says:

Nancy Pelosi did not make sure all her constitutes were gettin minimum wage increase either. It took her enemy party to point that out to her.

  51. mizuno says:

Have a great day all. Nice chatting it up.

    GOD BLESS AMERICA.

  52. Probus says:

It is amazing how far corrupt GOP members will go to distract attention away from their crimes. The fact is that both the FBI and the IRS have raided Stevens’ home. The FBI is even investigating his son. Stevens is as corrupt as they come.

  53. MD says:

mizuno: Spamming the board with nonsense, providing no evidence, and moving goal posts since … well, forever.

You still never pointed out a single instance of Dems blindly “protecting their own” — lots of them protecting themselves, but never, say, changing the rules to keep them in power.

And I’ll meet your Ted Kennedy and raise you a Laura Bush.

  54. missmolly says:

If Stevens can’t take the heat, he needs to stay out of the kitchen. Everybody in elected office will have his/her detractors — especially when it appears they may be committing crimes.

Stevens needs to get over it or retire.

  55. hellinabucket says:

If They are trying to assassinate him they are lousy shots. I mean really. Cheney would have dropped him by now.

  56. mizdos says:

we’ll try ta get along wit out cha, Miss 1

  57. Barry says:

Typical GOP trick is to attack the messenger. In this case the messenger is truth as in most cases. Truth is his real enemy. Just another corrupt GOP hack who’s days in congress are numbered now.

  58. mongo says:

If he can’t take a tough question from a newspaper reporter, how can he be effective in the war on terra?

  59. Dave C says:

Nancy Pelosi did not make sure all her constitutes were gettin minimum wage increase either. It took her enemy party to point that out to her.

And I guess it would take me to point out to you that American Samoa has been exempt from federal minimum wage laws for many years, including 12 years of Republican majority. Currently wage floors in American Samoa are set by the US Department of Labor. I’m not sure how the wages in American Samoa are relevant to you, nor is your point valid given that Republicans didn’t want a minimum wage increase for ANYONE in the U.S. So you really don’t give a damn, nor does your party.

  60. Thumper says:

It seems to me he doesn’t need any help getting ‘assassinated,’ he’s doing the job all by himself. Why is it that when ANYBODY gets caught doing something somewhat illegal, or unethical, they blame everyone else for picking on them. It’s really sad, the saddest part of this is, is that they are the people who are supposed to be doing what WE the people want them to do. They are doing everything but that.

  61. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

mizuno: “Hastert, that story I dont know much about. I admit that.”

    Then STFU dumbass!

  62. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Poor Ted. It’s not just those newspapers. It’s also those troubling tubes in the internets.

  63. tom baker says:

ol’ted’s quite the crybaby – maybe john gibson will jet up to AK for an “intimate interview” and “comfort” him, considering how they’ve both been so unfairly victimized….

  64. axl says:

Ted Stephens always sounds like a grouch.

  65. Gregor Samsa says:

Ah, yes… Stevens’ ethical issues are the fault of the newspaper that brought them to the attention of the public.

Just like the Republicans cried for blood when the revelations of torture in Abu Ghraib came to light, insisting the revelations jeopardized national security -but not a word on how torture is illegal.

See how the conservative mind works? All misdeeds are ok as long as they’re done in secrecy. If made known, smear the messenger.

  66. Marie says:

It appears that among other things, Stevens has a guilty conscience, so he attacks the questioner — isn’t that what they do? When they don’t have an answer, they turn the argument away from themselves.
I think it is becoming more clear as the weeks/months pass, that it is way past time for him to retire. He is well on the way of his decline; he has to go.

The trolls here are so thin-skinned — they think we are like them. We are ready to condemn Democrats for their faults, and we do so (the trolls just don’t pay attention); it is the repugs who are unable to see the faults of their own, they are the ones who cannot take criticism, they are the ones who demand lock-step head-bowing worship from their members. Just like Stevens, when asked a legitimate question, the trolls here turn the argument against Dems, because they have no legitimate defense of Stevens.

It’s just another version of “Clinton did it too!” Waah, waah, waah.

  67. Pete says:

    Throw the bum out!

  68. Zooey says:

Maybe he’ll be a casualty in the War on Gibson.

  69. ronjazz says:

It is a crying shame that newspapers aren’t better shots, at least put an end to our misery of listening tho this psycho hack moron. Ted, get the f*ck out!

  70. Davian says:

Make no mistake about Ted’s tactics when it comes to addressing journalists doing their jobs: Ted’s notion of “democracy” would eliminate the basic premise of an informed electorate. My perspective as an Alaskan resident for the last 24 years, has been Alaska’s cowboy Delegation has had a meaningful relationship with Alaska’s Public Radio Network. Ted and Don stay in the saddle by keeping APRN cowed into submission under the threat of budget castration. Anchorage Daily News continually distinguishes itself as honest journalism while APRN willingly self-castrates its professional duties to the public in fear of Ted’s budget knife. That’s why Alaska’s Delegation stay in power so long. Besides, most Alaskans worry more about their addictions to pork than the corruption necessary to keep it coming their way.

  71. Probus says:

Stevens’ temper tantrums will only help his democratic opponent in 2008. With these corruption charges democrats will be able to pick up his seat.
