During an appearance on CNN’s Lou Dobbs last night, former CIA director James Woolsey, one of the earliest advocates of invading Iraq, claimed that Iran “could have” a nuclear bomb in “a few months.”
“The Iranians continue to work on getting enriched uranium,” said Woolsey. “I’m afraid within, well, at worst, a few months; at best, a few years; they could have a bomb.” Watch it:
Woolsey is doing nothing more than fear-mongering when he says Iran could have a nuclear bomb in “a few months.” In fact, his assertion of an impending nuclear weapon in Iran is contradicted by experts on nuclear weapons, including the CIA.
“Iran is still probably five to 10 years away from gaining the ability to make nuclear fuel or nuclear bombs,” according to Joseph Cirincione, the director for nuclear policy at the Center for American Progress. In May, Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the UN’s the International Atomic Energy Agency, said “even if Iran wanted to go for a nuclear weapon, it would not be before the end of this decade or sometime in the middle of the next decade,” an estimate that echoed the view of the CIA.
Additionally, Woolsey is a suspect source for claims of urgency when it comes to nuclear weapons, having repeatedly hyped Saddam Hussein’s nuclear capability during the build up to war with Iraq:
“It is urgent that we begin this process of bringing democracy to the Middle East before the region’s most dangerous dictator — Saddam Hussein — gets nuclear weapons.” [5/21/02]
“I think it would be a lot easier to stop Saddam now than it would be two or three years from now when he would be almost certain to have nuclear weapons.” [1/10/03]
Unsatisfied with just invading Iraq, Woolsey is again pushing specious claims of imminent nuclear bombs, hoping the U.S. will move on to Iran next.
Transcript:
LOU DOBBS: Let’s begin with the issue of — the administration has stated categorically, you know, our generals have stated categorically that as many of the third of the deaths last month, for example, were caused by Iranian support of the insurgency and the provision of those shaped charges killing so many of our troops. Why is there no reaction by this government and this military?
JAMES WOOLSEY: I don’t know. The Persians invented chess and the Iranians are doing a pretty good job of moving their pieces — Muqtada al-Sadr and those explosive devices, and Hamas and Hezbollah around to protect their queen, which is their most lethal piece — their nuclear weapons program.
And I suppose the administration is focused on that. But the way it’s chosen to work on is to, for years, turn it over to the Europeans, who have been stalled by the Iranians and the Iranians continue to work on getting enriched uranium.
I’m afraid within, well, at worst, a few months; at best, a few years; they could have a bomb.

August 15th, 2007 at 11:39 amLook deeper. His comments indicate that the US will attack Iran in the next few months. You'd better start digging that bomb shelter, now.

Why you ask, stupid little neoturds? Because nobody has ever attacked a nation which posses nukes (i.e. THE U.S.A.)

August 15th, 2007 at 11:41 amUM...i COULD HAVE A BOMB! Really! I could. I'm sure woolsey will warn everyone of the potential disaster that woudl occur if americans had access to vast quantities of firearms, rockets and ammo. Er...wait.

Personally, I believe that Mohamed ElBaradei would like to see Iran get a nuke and is actively doing everthing he can to make it happen.
I don't trust the man one bit.

August 15th, 2007 at 11:44 amPakistan surprised no one. It was an open secret that Pakistan and India were working on, developed the capacity to build, and had probably built weapons long before either actually tested them.
When pundits and partisan dead-enders cry wolf, contradicting real intelligence services, the good rule of thumb is to believe the intelligence service.
August 15th, 2007 at 11:44 amIran has no intention of creating a nuclear weapon.
August 15th, 2007 at 11:44 amWhich is what he was alluding too.
You see Ringo - Iran doesnt have them and woudl use them if they did. But the PRETENSE of their use is what washington used in the run up to the iraq war (no it wasnt abt freedom, terrorism or democracy back then).
August 15th, 2007 at 11:45 amYou are dumb for equating Japan with Iran.
August 15th, 2007 at 11:45 amI want my taxes back on the billions that we spent on all our friggen nukes if they're not going to protect us any way..

August 15th, 2007 at 11:45 amThe beltway continues to ratchet up the noise on Iran. And now...the WH is debating whether to designate designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps a foreign terrorist organization. I see an airstrike on the horizon.
Our armed forces are "out of balance". We cannot respond to an event requiring major logistics and troop strength. This is scary.
August 15th, 2007 at 11:45 amIt is a PC war. We have to pacify everyone instead of just getting the job done.
August 15th, 2007 at 11:45 amIt seems to have become conventional wisdom that "THE WORLD WILL END IF IRAN GETS THE BOMB!!"
That's total BS. We sat eyeball to eyeball aginst the Soviets for 40 years in a mutual nuclear staredown called the Cold War. Not a single nuke was fired on account of a little principle called Mutual Assured Destruction. In this case we don't even have the word Mutual on the table. The Iranians are not crazy enough to fire a first nuke at anyone knowing that the entire country would be turned to glass in 15 minutes.
None of this means that I want Iran to have a nuke but I call BS on the nonsense that we have to act preemptively in order to stop it. It's total BS and Woolsey (who has been so right about everything else) and all the other saber-rattling neocons can just STFU.

August 15th, 2007 at 11:48 amFor all their hysterical talk of enemy threats, chickenhawks like Ringo only advocate the mass-murder that is war because deep down, they know the oceans still protect us from anything but the rare fluke. If they seriously thought they might come home to a bombed out house with their spouse and children lying with missing limbs on the ground in pools of their own guts, because they had helped pick a fight with a country able to fight back on our terms, they'd be much more circumspect about their infantile cheerleading for that horror.

21 Rationales for War
Want a reason for war with Iraq? Here are 21. A study by Devon Largio, a recent graduate of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, reveals that between September 2001 and October 2002 10 key players in the debate over Iraq presented at least 21 rationales for going to war. Largio examines the public statements of President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle, Sens. Joseph Lieberman and John McCain, Richard Perle (then chairman of the Defense Policy Review Board), Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz.
The table below illustrates who deployed each rationale.
Check the link for the table.
It was bullshit then and now.
Iran having a nuke anytime this decade is bullshit as well.
August 15th, 2007 at 11:52 amIf we don't take out Iran's nuclear facilities then Israel will have no choice but to do it.

August 15th, 2007 at 11:52 amWoolsey scares me more than Cheney, he just has a much lower profile. He knows where all the bodies are buried.
These fascists cannot be allowed to start dropping bombs on Iran, it will start WWIII as China and Russia may step up in their defense so as not to allow the U.S. to take control of the vast majority of the Middle East's natural resources, resources on which the Great Powers to the East rely heavily.
Where are the patriotic Intelligence officials to rip away the neocons fabricated arguments against Iran? Where is the courage amongst our media to to some homework and debunk these warmongering fools?

August 15th, 2007 at 12:02 pmGeorgia and the War of 1812
England Attacks
In May, 1814, Vice Admiral Alexander Cochrane and the English Fleet sailed up the St. Mary's River (on the border of Georgia and Florida). People fled the area, some damage was done, but the river was lightly populated and Cochrane moved on.
Alexander Cochrane may not be a household name in the United States or the state of Georgia, but he should be. After leaving Georgia he sailed north to the Patapsco River near Baltimore, Maryland, where the fleet and the British army planned a combined assault. When the land attack failed to materialize, it fell upon Cochrane to launch a nighttime naval assault against Fort McHenry in September, 1814, in hopes of breaching the hastily constructed defenses. It is this assault, and the American success at withstanding it, that Francis Scott Key was watching when he wrote the words to the Star Spangled Banner.

Correction, you got caught cutting and pasting something a real Korean veteran posted on a Korean veteran blog site, claiming it as your own. Plagerism.
I never saw your MOS posted by you, ever.
For example:
MOS: 18b Weapons Sergeant
August 15th, 2007 at 12:22 pmassigned 31b desk job in may 1991 while recovering from 2nd surgery till release Sept 1991
Stationed: Fort Bragg
served from 1982-1991, 9 years
With what Army is Woolsey going to fight the Iranians? It's foolish to think that we can carry out a few airstrikes on select targets in Iran and expect them to ignore us. You think we've got a problem fighting ~30,000 insurgents now? Just wait...
August 15th, 2007 at 12:22 pmNo, sorry, toasterhead. I must have missed it but will try to look it up.
August 15th, 2007 at 12:23 pmThey appear to be really ramping up the Iran rhetoric and drum beat. This is the second report on Iran his morning. Interesting to see this escalation of tough talk on and accusation of Iran happening during the August break. I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to tie Iran to the attacks yesterday as well.
August 15th, 2007 at 12:23 pmDon't be surprised to see the US going after Iran before Spetember, especially before this report comes out from Petraeus (or I guess written by the White House but read by Petraeus.. What a surprise..), This is all just so scripted and choreographed. I frankly don't believe or trust anything they say any more.

My original reply has disappeared. The phrase used by Ahmedinejad was not "wipe Israel off the map." That idiom does not exist in Farsi. He did talk about erasing the regime occupying Jerusalem from the pages of history, but did so in a quote from Ayatollah Khomeini (who had documented relations with Israel). What they refer to is not annihilating the state of Israel, but ending the occupation of land seized illegally in 1967.
Cole has more detail on his blog:

August 15th, 2007 at 12:55 pmRingo, regrettably this assertion is a lie. Pakistan did not surprise the US with its nuke. We knew for years that they were pursuing nuclear weapons. It was one of the reasons that their access to the ultra-high-speed synchronizing switches necessary for an implosion design was embargoed for a long time. They managed to break that embargo.
If you meant that their testing their nuclear weapons surprised us, then you should have been more explicit. Of course, that comment would have defanged the intent of your statement, so I can understand why you didn't make that clear. The US knew that Pakistan was pursuing nuclear weapons. We just didn't know when they might test them.
August 15th, 2007 at 12:56 pmI think this is the reason this administration has been the biggest threat to our national security. They have manufactured, manipulated, and misrepresented so much trying to sell this 'war on terror' to the American public instead of just being straight and honest about their true motives. Sort of like the boy who cried wolf. They have lied and manuevered so much that when there really IS something happening that Americans need to be warned about, nobody is going to believe them.

Yes, but an Iranian nuke could reach Europe or Israel, which is all they need to blackmail the cowardly Europeans into standing aside while they (Iran) uses it's proxy armies to attack Israel.
But then it seems that much of the Left shares Iran's goal of destroying the state of Israel so it comes as no surprise that you show less concern about Iran have nukes than most Leftists do about Israel or the US having them.

Well, like most republicans, the Bush White House needs to stay away from all things mathematical.
Because when you launch a missle, you don't gauge land mileage. You calculate AIR miles. And Air Miles from Seoul to LA is about 6000, meaning the chance of North Korea hitting anything besides a school of fish somewhere in the Pacific are NON EXISTENT.
People are stupid, and will believe anything. But the informations all there if you just look it up.

No they couldn't you moran. You need to invest in a globe.
Pakistans Hatf II missles fly about 150 miles before plunging into the ground. Only recently, with Chinese help have they devloped any longer range missle capability, with their new Ghari and Shaheen II missles, and the farthest they can fly is about 900 miles and they haven't even been adequately tested yet.
In other words, on their own, Iran couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in Turkey with one of the missles they don't even have yet.

August 15th, 2007 at 1:22 pmThom Hartmann interviewed Max Blumenthal on this yesterday. It was pretty weird..
He's probably kinda right (probably not months, they still would have to test their stuff, develop a system of deployment which is probably years away if they are thinking of ICBM capacity, and centrifugal refinement requires massive amounts of energy to yield small amounts of fissionable materials), but with the Iraq fiasco not much anyone can do about it either diplomatically or militarily-especially militarily.
Invading Iran would make the Iraq fiasco look like a "cake walk."
Think of the collapse of Pakistan which would probably result of a Iranian invasion/attack. China would be really pissed (oil). No Brittan this time either.

See the contradiction?

The only really credible threat in the Middle East right now is the US threatening to attack Iran. Difficult to understand why they would take the threat seriously, given our history of interfering in their country.

No it doesn't. What Rafsanjani is saying is that in a nuclear exchange between Iran and Israel - presumably with Iran firing the first missile - Iran and the "world of Islam" will survive but Israel will be destroyed.
His point is that a nuclear Iran will be able to destroy Israel while Israel cannot destroy Iran.

Here are some of President Ahmadinejad's comments at the "World Without Zionism" confrence....
"Ahmadinejad articulated the real meaning of Zionism: '...We must see what the real story of Palestine is... The establishment of the regime that is occupying Jerusalem was a very grave move by the hegemonic and arrogant system [i.e. the West] against the Islamic world. We are in the process of an historical war between the World of Arrogance [i.e. the West] and the Islamic world, and this war has been going on for hundreds of years.
"'In this historical war, the situation at the fronts has changed many times. During some periods, the Muslims were the victors and were very active, and looked forward, and the World of Arrogance was in retreat.
"'Unfortunately, in the past 300 years, the Islamic world has been in retreat vis-à -vis the World of Arrogance… During the period of the last 100 years, the [walls of the] world of Islam were destroyed and the World of Arrogance turned the regime occupying Jerusalem into a bridge for its dominance over the Islamic world...
"'This occupying country [i.e. Israel] is in fact a front of the World of Arrogance in the heart of the Islamic world. They have in fact built a bastion [Israel] from which they can expand their rule to the entire Islamic world... This means that the current war in Palestine is the front line of the Islamic world against the World of Arrogance, and will determine the fate of Palestine for centuries to come.
"'Today the Palestinian nation stands against the hegemonic system as the representative of the Islamic Ummah [nation]. Thanks to God, since the Palestinian people adopted the Islamic war and the Islamic goals, and since their struggle has become Islamic in its attitude and orientation, we have been witnessing the progress and success of the Palestinian people.'
"Ahmadinejad said: 'The issue of this [World without Zionism] conference is very valuable. In this very grave war, many people are trying to scatter grains of desperation and hopelessness regarding the struggle between the Islamic world and the front of the infidels, and in their hearts they want to empty the Islamic world.
"'... They [ask]: 'Is it possible for us to witness a world without America and Zionism?' But you had best know that this slogan and this goal are attainable, and surely can be achieved…

To be fair, you'd have to see the original Persian to know for sure. It's a subtlety of usage in English that was probably much more clear when the quote was initially spoken.
Which is why I don't trust the MEMRI translation of the WWZ conference. Any organization that would mistranslate "the Jews will shoot us" as "we will annihilate the Jews" strikes me as suspicious. Every reference to Israel in that speech is supplied by MEMRI - Ahmedinejad could have been talking about the Sharon administration rather than Israel as a country. He's made other speeches where he referred to preserving Israel, but as a pluralistic country that allows Palestinians to return to their homeland.
It is also important to look at the historical context. For many people in the Middle East, the last 300 years have been marked by Western colonialism and empire-building, be it by the French and English, the League of Nations, or by the United States. Israel is, in the eyes of many Arabs and Persians, the last European colony in the Middle East.

Following Ringo's logic here is like an acid trip through the brain cells of the typical NeoCon mind: I will get anyone I can to fight MY battles for me, but I will NEVER go to war myself. I am more important behind the scenes, driving the majority to do what the minority wants done. And if I make a lot of money along the way, so be it!
See, the NeoCons in this country will let Americans and Israelis fight and die, but not themselves.
That is a true NeoCon Chickenhawk, branded with the star of David and the dollar sign!
August 15th, 2007 at 3:37 pmNeocons aren't nation builders or gatekeepers. They are the weasels that steal from the general population. They are the alarmists that cry of made up outrage (same sex marriage, voter fraud) but ignore the need for a collective good that comes from pooling resources (infrastructure, regulations for food).
They entice those who blindly follow the flag and they question those who question them.
They have destroyed this country but have been exposed for the thieves they are.

August 15th, 2007 at 4:02 pmThanx for the laughs Thad. You have inspired me to participate.
In a way, one can't blame the trolls. The have been conditioned to blindly follow and the information they get from their masters is faulty. Heck, just last Sunday I caught a few minutes of a televangelist who had heard, somewhere, about EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) and boy is he scared! The way he understands it, a single nuclear bomb, delivered in a ship, will wipe out every electrical device in the country!! And could kill 100,000,000 people!!! And that's not including the tens of millions who will die because their TV's don't work!!!!
And this is coming from a guy who believes he's on the "rapture list". He has a disconcerting habit of saying, "Praise Jesus" immediately after he explains how, and why, two thirds of the worlds population has to die to enable "the return of the Lord".
Folks, you can't argue with "logic" like that.
August 15th, 2007 at 4:05 pmThis is absolutely frightening. Now he is going to declare the Republican Guard "terrorist" so they can then justify attacking? Our poor soldiers who "volunteered" but really have been conscripted because the prez keeps extending their time. We can't even equip the guys we have now, they are exhausted, depleted.
August 15th, 2007 at 5:04 pmbinForgotten long ago said in one of his creepy taped messages that he WANTED Bush to invade Iraq, deplete his army and bankrupt America, then attack us when we are weakened. Bush played into his hand like the psychotic fool that he is and increased the threat of terrorism 10 fold all over the world, he BROUGHT alQaeda to Iraq with his illegal occupation. Prior to the invasion there were NO alQueda there!Tillman was RIGHT and feared for our soldiers in Afghanistan if Bush invaded Iraq and look what they did to him. He is a megalomaniac, I fear for us all. Not from "terrorists" we are supposedly fighting in these wars but the terrorists in the WH and the Justice Dept. We the People have to act somehow to stop any further invasions in the Middle East! He's all hat and no cattle ( or in this case soldiers)
We are in a very scary position now because of Bush, he ignores ALL the Generals who have tried to reason with him and keeps hurling us further towards disaster.
"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."

August 15th, 2007 at 5:20 pm- Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998 |
Once again the neo-cons have started to beat the drums of war. Fact is Iran is at least 5-10 years away from nuclear capability. War with Iran will further destabilize the Middle East region. Iran is not a national security threat to us. Neither was Iraq. The Iraq war proved that the document of preemption has failed. Spreading democracy by unilateral force is also a failure.
August 15th, 2007 at 5:23 pm“One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line.â€

And through UN sanctions Saddam was successfully denied weapons of mass destruction right up to our invasion.
August 15th, 2007 at 5:40 pmWoosley profitted nicely from the Iraq disaster so it only makes sense that he'd try to make bucks off of Iran.
August 15th, 2007 at 6:20 pmAnd you know what happened in 1998?
August 15th, 2007 at 7:25 pmBill Clinton and Sandy Berger and Richard Claarke launched a massive cruise missile attack (Operation Desert Fox) on Iraq. In that attack whatever WMD capabilities left to Iraq were destroyed.
After Bill Clinton dealt with the problem, the Bushivikii disinterred the dead horse and began to flog it.
"Saddam Hussein's regime represents a grave threat to America and our allies, including our vital ally, Israel. For more than two decades, Saddam Hussein has sought weapons of mass destruction through every available means. We know that he has chemical and biological weapons. He has already used them against his neighbors and his own people, and is trying to build more. We know that he is doing everything he can to build nuclear weapons, and we know that each day he gets closer to achieving that goal." -- John Edwards, Oct 10, 2002
August 15th, 2007 at 7:43 pm"The debate over Iraq is not about politics. It is about national security. It should be clear that our national security requires Congress to send a clear message to Iraq and the world: America is united in its determination to eliminate forever the threat of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction." -- John Edwards, Oct 10, 2002 Why didn't Bill "The Zipper" Clinton, Commander in heat tell Johnny all was well in Iraq ?
August 15th, 2007 at 7:47 pmOr Nancey ? "As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." -- Nancy Pelosi, December 16, 1998
August 15th, 2007 at 7:49 pmMore old quotes that have already been debunked, and proven wrong. I don't know what the Bush loyalists expect to achieve by re-hashing them -maybe they want to highlight how completely wrong the White House intelligence was regarding Iraq.
We should remind them that the UN weapons inspectors were asking for more time to certify Iraq was a WMD-free country right up to the onset of the invasion; hardly the sign of a "gathering threat". Not to mention the revelations that the Bush administration manufactured their own intelligence thanks to Feith's "alternative intelligence" office.
But these are facts, the kind that has a liberal bias.

August 16th, 2007 at 11:20 amWoolsey needs to justify his assertions. Until he does, assume the information is no better than the Iraq WMD data: Fabricated, and politically driven to justify illegal warfare.
Time for the grand jury to compel Woosley to disclose where he is getting his information: Why is the US Government supposedly leaking this "classified" inforation to Woosley who is then disclosing it? The only reasonable conclusion: The inforation is not secret, has been fabricated, and is not linked with any real information the US wants to protect related to sources and methods; and Woosley is, in effect, acting like the Iraqi shills prior to the illegal invasion of Iraq.
August 16th, 2007 at 1:04 pm249: "Iran openly threatens to blow Isreal and the US off the globe." Your assertion is a fabrication. The quotes you are using have been mistranslated. Try again.
If, in fact, the Iranians "are" involved with illegal things, then why hasn't that targeting information been provided to the IAEA for thier inspection; and what is the basis for the US military targeting in Iran? The only reasonable answer is tht the US has not got any targets related to imminent threats; and the IAEA has not been provided the information because the US is not interested in inspections, only in military action. This is the same pre-textual, illegal basis for the invasion of Iraq.
You're starting from a faulty permise. Same problem we had prior to the Iraq invasion: Stupid arguments based on non-sense logic. Same thing today: Without reasonable arguments, the basis for invading Iran is dubious, not just illegal. Please stop supporting illegal warfare in Iran.
August 16th, 2007 at 1:07 pmHe's smoking mushrooms and looking at clouds form.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:35 pmAssume the worst: Iran threatens the US with a nuclear attack, and stays long enough on the map in order for it to produce a nuclear warhead. They are lucky enough to manage loading the warhead into a ballistic missile WITHOUT blowing themselves up in the process. They are dumb and crazy enough to target the US. Then they manage to launch it accurately enough(boy, that would be a real achievement for them) to hit one of US's cities. Then the retaliation begins. In a matter of minutes/hours, Iran will be a red sea of molten rock, and another nation goes down because of it's own stupidity. Period.
