Former enemy combatant Jose Padilla found guilty.»

Jose Padilla, a U.S. citizen who had been arrested in 2002 as an enemy combatant, has been found guilty in a Miami court on all charges of supporting terrorism. The Washington Post wrote that the administration’s detention of him had been “bruising to liberty.” The Bush administration had claimed that Padilla, who was held in a military brig for more than 3 years, could be detained indefinitely and without access to a lawyer. Ultimately, the federal courts forced the administration to provide Padilla access to the courts. The verdict today affirms the merits of a judicial system that provides both due process and due punishment. Padilla’s attorneys are expected to appeal.

the difference between Padilla and Bush/Cheney is that they have killed massive numbers of human beings, ripped apart children with missiles, and shattered ancient cultures.

    YES!

For being torchered, renditioned, and denied BASIC rights provided to all Americans alone he should be released IMMEDIATELY!!!!

I hope that YOU are someday arrested for something that YOU MIGHT have done, and put through what this man has been through…….

    YOU ARE A PATHETIC SLIMEBALL!!!!!!

If he would have been put directly into the court system, and the results were that he was guilty then I would be excited…… However, there is no telling now if the information or evidence is even trustworthy!!!!!

Would YOU want to have to defend yourself against something like that????

  16. Badmoodman Says:

Ringo, a couple of salient facts. The verdict is not on the original charge of plotting a dirty bomb, and it was this charge that had Padilla arrested and detained without charges and allegedly tortured for three years in solitary.

The question of Padilla’s innocence or guilt on a much lesser charge is therefore less salient than the way in which he was treated by the government. That remains a travesty; and the government should be relieved its clumsy handling of the case did not lead to his acquittal.

It is also important to recall that Jose Padilla was interrogated in a fashion to render his mental capacity to stand trial a question. He claimed torture, and was sequestered without being charged for three years in solitary confinement. The result was a broken man, according to Time magazine.

This conviction is another resounding victory for all Americans!

  18. Jackie Says:

After being tortured for three years Mr. Padilla is already dead. The White House made sure he would be found guilty and like so many other truths this will be told in history as a man found guilty for something he didn’t do yet who really cares anyway. How many innocent people have been put to death when later we find out they were framed. The Rosenbergs were found guilty for treason only a few years ago Russian records prove they were set up and framed. Does anyone remember the Rosenbergs or even care about that case was the Trial of the Century. We can feel bad but we can’t bring them back, so Padilla will join them in the history of the United States Justice System.

  19. Ringo Says:

In my opinion the court was right to demand Padilla have access to the courts; he is an American citizen, aprehended on US soil.

But just in case he is a terrorist sympathizer we should just lock him up anyway. If we find out that he is just a talk radio host, we can always just let him go later.

We have done this to over 200 people so far, including 3 American citizens.

Libs and progressives shouldn’t have the unmitigated gall to actually get bent out of shape if someone accuses them of being angry and disappointed that Padilla’s been convicted as the domestic terrorist with Al-Qaeda ties that he is. If anything, it’s very apparent on these ToiletPaper threads that progs are shaking their Korans in self-righteous anger that Padilla’s been convicted. Progs/libtards are outraged for two reasons. First, they can no longer blame Bush on the basis that he’s imprisoned a US citizen on no grounds and was overreaching by going after an American traitor. Two, libtards and progs are also denied the libelous argument that Bush is abusing his power by having indefinitely detained Padilla without access to a lawyer, originally, because this guilty verdict shows Bush and the DoJ got Padilla on many counts, meaning they had reason to hold him like PoW.

You stated: “I’d make him live next door to you.” Therefore, you admit that you would like him to be released rather than be punished for his crimes.

The fact that you were being sarcastic has nothing to do with it, so it’s ignored.

You are now branded a terrorist sympathizer, obviously love al Quida and hate the US and the Constitution and should be scorned for your anti-American attitudes.

Wrong on both counts. He imprisoned an American citizen without charges and without counsel. That means that Bush supports Al Qaeda. You have provided no reason for treating him like a POW, which, by the way, he wasn’t. The Geneva Conventions would not have allowed the torture of Padilla. It demonstrates that George Bush can hold a little brown prisoner with a Middle Eastern name in custody for years while torturing him.

It demonstrates that George Bush can get a federal court to agree that torture methods that we borrowed from the Geheminstaatspolizei, the Stasi and the KGB - which we claim we don’t use - should remain state secrets because the bad little brown people might study them and learn to resist them - when we “don’t” use them.

It demonstrates that George Bush can still scare twelve people in Florida into believing that the little brown people who mow their lawns or take their jobs or populate their slums or train to re-invade Cuba (or have sex with white women) might act in concert with little brown people from Over There and so we should keep keeping them in jail regardless of how few facts the government presents.

It also demonstrates that George Bush is the world’s biggest terrorist and supporter of Al Qaeda. Thbis, of course, was well-known on 9/12/01 to those of us who can reason rather than kneel down to a boy-king deserter. 141. OutSourced Says:

Jose Padilla may have done very bad things, but it doesn’t seem as if the federal govt could prove any of them. Instead, its non-Arabic speaking “experts” talked about hundreds of thousands of Arabic language communications, a few dozen of which might have included Padilla’s name in an attempt to make Padilla guilty by association. The govt changed its claims against Padilla whenever a federal court seemed likely to find its claims laughable and/or extra-constitutional.

Mr. Padilla may not be likable, he may have committed crimes and may have deserved jail time. He didn’t deserve to lose his mind, or his civil rights, or to be tossed into a law- and stimulus-free solitary confinement in order to break them. Not to get information, which would be unreliable, but to break them.

Cheney seems caught in a junior high schoolish game of “mine’s bigger”. Like a fake conscientious objector (or one with multiple deferments) years after his war, he needs to demonstrate that despite he’s a manly warrior. To show that his Washington monument is bigger than any mosque’s tower. What’s been lost is not just Padilla’s civil rights, but ours too, because doing it a second time is always easier.

How do you make that out, F***head? After 4 years of trampling on the Constitution rights of an American to have his habeas ciorpus rights respected, the legal system finally gets a chance to have some attempt at a criminal trial and a conviction is a result. Seems to me that the legal system can work if allowed to, proving that this fascism of ‘unlawful enemy combatants is an unnecessary totalitarian tactic. However, the damage to the Constitution remains, thatnk to the fascists running the United States.

The first Trade Center bombing they were arrested, tried and convicted. No violation of rights and torture involved. No violation of the Constitution, genius.

And all that got us was another wave of terror. Maybe we should have been just a little more aggressive.

RemoveBush is illiterate. I don’t think anyone knew he had an argument.

  168. RemoveBush Says:

Tracy, by YOUR idea of a terrorist and what we should do to them then we should be bombing the hell out of Oklahoma because that is where Tim McVeigh was from…….

By YOUR standard, we should nuke DC because that is where those 2 guys were that were shooting people from the trunk of their car……..

By your standard, all states with serial killers need to be bombed and destroyed because they have terrorists……..

See how stupid your approach is???

I think that many are satisfied with just doing the minimum and just enough to make themselves feel good.

Tracy, how do we know you are not the enemy?

Lets better waterboard you in order to get some info. I mean you have to do EVERYTHING to be safe, right? Well, then we will start torturing you.

    It´s for safety reasons.

    They used torches on him?

    Comment by r — August 16, 2007 @ 5:19 pm

    No, r.

They “torchered” him, it’s completely different and has nothing to do with torture or torches.

    You don’t want to know.

Tracy would have to actually think to see that.
    Not possible.

Everyday Americans (non-military), are doing all they can to put an end to terrorism, and yes, this terrorist will have his ass handed to him if he is thrown in Federal Prison.

I would say the Neocon mentality increases the chance of another attack on American soil.
