Fact-checking the latest global warming denial campaign.

When NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies recently announced that it was revising its temperature data, right-wing bloggers leaped at the news to propel its global warming denial campaign. James Hansen — head of the NASA center — sets the record straight. He writes that the “corrected and uncorrected curves are indistinguishable,” adding that the “deceit” propagated by the right “has a clear purpose: to confuse the public about the status of knowledge of global climate change.”

They don't understand it, and they'd have to work at it to understand -- like we all do -- so rather than try to work through it, they just give up and deny the whole concept.

Changing habits is difficult. See above.

The really sad thing about the roaring single digits of this century is that our leaders are not just clueless and lazy. There is an element of deceit. They are doing so much damage in so many areas that will haunt us for decades or even more.

We know about the disaster in Iraq and our relations with the rest of the world. We now know about Bush's intentions the whole time of establishing a permanent base there and taking their oil.

We know about the health scandals, including how our former Surgeon General said this Administration squelched science in favor of obsequious comments about Bush. More deceit.

We know about global warming. The latest on that is just another example of an attempt to deceive: http://climateprogress.org/2007/08/16/must-read-from-hansen-stop-the-madness-about-the-tiny-revision-in-nasas-temperature-data/

And boy do we know about the Murdoch and his billion dollar Fox media empire which enables all this deceit. Why just today it was reported they were caught doctoring up Wikipedia.

And let's not forget about outing Plame as political payback, the illegal spying, the torture and all the rest.

These crooked, deceitful Fox-Republicans officials and politicians are the slime of the Earth. Democrats need to put them exactly where they belong. No more free passes. These Republicans will do whatever they can get away with. If the Democrats don't show them there is a real price to pay for this kind of activity, it will happen again within the next few decades and the Nixon Bush cycle will continue. Rove is young yet.

For the leaders at Exxon/Mobil, Chevron/Texaco, ConocoPhillips, BP, et al, their political operatvies (on both the right and the left) and the MSM/military-industrial complex, putting an end to global warming would of course mean changing the current Western paradigm. Our flavor of capitalism, which thrives on the myth that consumption and economic growth should be boundless, simply is not conducive to telling the truth about where we are headed if we continue to piss through the worlds natural resources at the current rate, especially its fossil fuels.

The "deniers" or more aptly, the "liars", are protecting their own interests and investments in maintaining the lie. These are the most brazen and insidious of propagandists.

Fine, humans aren't TOTALLY at fault. Now, would we be losing Greenland if it weren't for human activity? I know you have a good heart but giving comfort to denyers is not cool. The fact is we have normal weather patterns...and we have human activity making the extremes more extreme. In other words human activity is making the almost unbearable, truly unbearable.

Yes, lots of smoke this year, but thankfully not as much as last year. Also, right now the wheat harvest is going on, so lots of dust in the air. My mom, who has severe lung problems, can't even leave the house right now.

There is some dissagreement among individual scientists about the extent to which human activity is involved. Many scientific organizations agree with the consensus, some do not. Among those who do agree with the consensus, they say humans do cause most of the warming, so you are incorrect about humans worsening its effects.

The claim that there is some kind of ongoing debate among qualified scientists about the basics of AGW is a fiction promulgated by liars. I just read a ludicrous op-ed in the Salt Lake Tribune (what do you expect) from Cal Thomas repeating this same lie.

    Comment by VerbalKint — August 17, 2007 @ 12:39 am

My logic is clear. There is a consensus among many scientific organizations regarding human impact, however, many individual scientists disagree (mostly on the degree of human impact). Therefore, I choose to cast some doubt. I will cite individual scientists such as Dr. Richard Lindzen of MIT, and Dr. Frederick Singer of UVA, who wrote a fantastic book about global warming which I have read.

    Comment by Michael Savage, PhD — August 17, 2007 @ 12:51 am

Right. There is no disagreement that human activity actually does impact global climate. The only disagreement is over the extent to which it does, not if it does. That is one very big difference.

Trying to casting doubts over the consensus is dishonest at best.

I will cite individual scientists such as Dr. Richard Lindzen of MIT, and Dr. Frederick Singer of UVA, [...]

Without going into the details of these scientists' credentials and the merits of their position, fact remains there is consensus that global warming is real and that humans are having an impact.

Your choice of listening to the dissenters is akin to paying attention to Flat Earthers because, you know, there is dissent over whether or not the Earth is actually round and revolves around the Sun.

What a ridiculous position to take.

I have done all of the virus things.
My basic question is "Is there anyone who offers a package that checks out the system itself?"

The hootest yr on record was during the dust bowl and 4 of 10 hottest yrs were in the 30's. I still think this is just a plan to implement an ecologica agenda which he has been successful in doing. I still dont buy the fact that humans did this when a larg portion of the earth was once covered in ice (what caused it to melt?-- the sun?) why isnt this just a normal temp change? what heppened to the fear of global cooling in the 70's because of pollution? The scientists were then saying we would be in a constant winter like season. The yr after katrina they were predicting 10 or more hurricanes to hit the gulf. for the past 2 yrs they had to downgrade their predictions because they couldnt even predict the weather 2 yrs ahead of time even using their computer models, that is why i am skeptical about the earth dying from man made global warming in 50 yrs . As i get older the lest I trust anything that comes out of a politicians mouth

Is that article supposed to prove anything? It says what most of us have known for a long time - that biofeuls, particularly noncellulosic ethanol, are not a viable solution to reducing carbon emissions and are only a pathetic pandering to the farm lobby.

And the ozone hole caused by CFCs (such as freon and the propellants in old hairspray cans) does play a role in climate change by preventing the Southern Ocean from absorbing carbon dioxide.

Who will be willing to make a MAJOR impact on their carbon footprint today by giving up meat/dairy TODAY and moving to a locally grown vegan diet whenever such a lefestyle change can be logistically worked out?

As many here may know, our eating habits make up a huge portion of our carbon footprint. This part of our lives can be changed quickly.

    I'm still looking for hands.....

I'm already a vegan Toliver. Not that humans have much to do with climate change.

I think I agree with you muckdog; my point is that many of these people screaming about AGW are doing very little about their own carbon footprints.

So what do you want us to do? Even if we did everything you want , how are we going to make china, india, and the middle east change their behavior. One other thing, i live in the SW, and we have millions of acres of forest fires burn every yr which releases tons and tons of carbon and other pollutants into the air. One problem is there are hundred if not thousands of trees per acre which is what drives these fires. Would you support the thinnning of the forest by private industry to use for wood product provided they left 'x' number of trees per acre (designated by the forest service) so that it reduces that chance of these superfires?

A friend of mine is trying to tell me that the guy behind (what he calls the hoax) of manmade global warming, is somebody named Maurice Strong. He claims that he's with the UN and is some kind of a de-populationist and eugenicist.

Is there any truth to this? Anybody know who Maurice Strong is? If so, is he a good guy or a bad guy?

Someone do some research and look up how much CO2 was in the air when the dinos were here, 5-10 times more. We weren't there to case that were we? It doesn't matter if the world is in a warming or cooling trend, the media's gonna report the worst of it regardless. Fourty years ago they all said we were gonna freeze and now we're going to burn... I'd reccomend getting my story straight. If we reduce the carbon in the air, however, we will freeze because we need it to keep the heat in. I don't really want to see Earth become barren and lifeless like mars do you? Why don't you focus on getting the word about some plausible solutions to problems like taxes by implementing the fair tax. There is good in the world, but when's the last time you've heard about it on the news?
