This morning, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) “asked the Justice Department’s Inspector General (IG) to investigate potentially false or misleading testimony given by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales during his appearances before various congressional committees.” Leahy highlights several contradictory statements made by the Attorney General on the NSA’s spy program, the use of National Security Letters, and his role in the U.S. attorney purge:
Consistent with your jurisdiction, please do not limit your inquiry to whether or not the Attorney General has committed any criminal violations. Rather, I ask that you look into whether the Attorney General, in the course of his testimony, engaged in any misconduct, engaged in conduct inappropriate for a cabinet officer and the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, or violated any duty — including the duty set out in federal regulations for government officials to avoid any conduct which gives the appearance of a violation of law or of ethical standard, regardless of whether there is an actual violation of law.

The always predictable Leaky. Maybe Padilla can move to Vermont.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:08 pmLeahy asks DOJ Inspector General to probe Gonzales…
Preferably with a cattle prod.
In the posterior.
Ah, forget it, Gonzo would like it.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:09 pmThis is a step in the right direction — one better than issuing unresponsive subpoenas. An honest outcome may or may not warrant the impeachment of Gonzalez. But if Gonzalez committed wrongdoing, I support his swift impeachment and removal from office.
I have to ask: Can the president actually fire any Inspector General?
August 16th, 2007 at 4:15 pmNo offense, Sen. Leahy, but…
Are you f*ing insane!
Like this DoJ is going to conduct a reliable investigation.
We’ve got to take stronger actions than this. But this came from the same guy who, every time BushCo ignores his subpoenas, he puts his foot down and gives them more time.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:16 pmLeahy asks DOJ Inspector General to probe Gonzales.
Leahy likes to watch.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:19 pmIf he works at the pleasure of the president he can be fired. This is another step in building a case against this administration. The wheels of justice move slow but they are moving.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:23 pmRepublicans should be excited about a good probing. So many in the news seem to be in favor of it lately.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:29 pmLeahy asks DOJ Inspector General to probe Gonzales.
IG responds: No thanks. Probe him yourself.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:33 pmBob Allen is looking for a good probe. Will pay cash.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:36 pmI hope they probe Gonzales with something worthy of the task at hand….if you know what I mean.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:37 pm“Leahy asks DOJ Inspector General to probe Gonzales”… And what is Leahy going to about it if they say no? Never mind.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:38 pmYeah, I see the IG jumping right on this request….
August 16th, 2007 at 4:46 pmGlenn Fine is not exactly a GOP political hack.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:46 pm#2 zimzone
August 16th, 2007 at 4:47 pmThe phrasing of that headline really asked for that comment didn’t it? :) I was thinking along the same lines as you!
Unless Glenn Fine is a mole, then this should get the ball rolling. Fine was appointed IG on 12/15/2000 (http://www.usdoj.gov/oig/glennfine.htm). Before the reign of terror began on 1/21/2001. Perhaps there’s a silver lining behind every cloud after all.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:47 pmWalt the Man, I tried to get some background on Glenn Fine also, and came up with a few things but mostly about the same as you. I don’t know whether anyone can be trusted to actually do their job in the DOJ — doesn’t that tell us a lot about how far this government has fallen in the eyes of so many of us? Someone is going to have to investigate AG and prepare the case for his impeachment, but is there anyone able to do so?
August 16th, 2007 at 4:49 pmThe only way to get Gonzo to cooperate is for him to be waterboarded. What’s that? We do not torture. This was said by Bush repeatedly. Gonzo himself said the Geneva Conventions are “quaint”.
Let the waterbaording begin because……it is NOT torture.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:50 pmMy blind, dead uncle could find Gonzo’s “false or misleading” testimony. Get the show on the road and impeach these traitors!!!

Beat ya.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:52 pmGood luck to you Senator Leahy, but expect Darth Dicky Cheney to F-bomb you again. Bush might flip you the bird too > lol.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:53 pmLike this DoJ is going to conduct a reliable investigation.
Uh. If we are going to have the rule of law, there has got to be an investigation. Who, in your mind, should conduct the investigation then?
August 16th, 2007 at 5:01 pmprobe deep enough and he’ll find Bush, Cheney and Rove DNA.
August 16th, 2007 at 5:04 pm… and everyone who has gone 80 in a 65 mile per hour zone must down load a blank traffic citation in PDF format, fill it out and send it by certified mail to the Justice Department for prosecution.
August 16th, 2007 at 5:04 pmDon’t forget to check the box if you are in the country illegally.
Like that is going to do any good. Ask someone to investigate their boss. What a novel idea.
Congress needs to take the bull by the horn and prosecute Gonzales for perjury. He has obviously perjured himself several times so the case would be a slam-dunk. The problem is, do the Democrats have the courage to do it?
August 16th, 2007 at 5:08 pmDon’t think it is going to happen. Just got this from Wikipedia:

What about Jeff Gannon’s wrist watch?
August 16th, 2007 at 5:24 pmI don’t think that Gonzo counts as an attorney in his current role.

That’s right. He just plays one on TV.
August 16th, 2007 at 5:35 pmHe’s a lying sack of sh*t in his current role.
EXCELLENT!
Pat Leahey, former criminal prosecutor, is on the job.
Look out Gonzo. The third word in the organization you head, is about to nab your ass.
August 16th, 2007 at 5:35 pmDon’t probe him, waterboard him.
August 16th, 2007 at 5:39 pmActually, Gonzo is an employer.
August 16th, 2007 at 5:39 pmDrat #19, foiled again. Plus, your link is prettier, too.

How about the Hague?
August 16th, 2007 at 6:06 pmWhat has a man got to say for an answer to his inquiry? And maybe an untruthful answer?
Just where is America?
Without law?
And with, just what?
Prehaps, a big’ big, big, debt?
Surprised?
Republicans love your debt and your loyality.
August 16th, 2007 at 6:20 pmNone of the following makes any sense:
This does:
Just where is America?
But this doesn’t, without some sort of context:
This makes sense but is just plain wrong (at least the first part):

I have boiler plate set up in a text file since those little black tabs at the top stopped working on TP. Besides, I allways wanted to able to say that I was faster than a “Roket”.
August 16th, 2007 at 6:45 pmThe boiler plate string is:

Where all occurances of RPAAP are changed to “>” and all occurances of LPAAC are changed to “

August 16th, 2007 at 8:10 pmIs this not where a special prosecutor comes in ? The DOJ IG works under “Ah-fuh-gotso” Gonzales. How can the inspector gen be impartial.
August 16th, 2007 at 9:17 pmIf the Doj inspector gen is worth is salt he would call in a special prosecutor.
Here is but one example of why Glenn Fine is not a paper tiger.
August 16th, 2007 at 10:04 pmLeahy is smart to do this. If Gonzales broke the law he should be indicted for perjury. On its own Congress should look at impeachment on the grounds of perjury and obstruction of justice. While Bush might not take these charges seriously (Libby) these are serious violations of law. Gonzales is unworthy of the office he occupies.
