Tony Snow Signals His Resignation, Plus ‘A Couple’ More ‘Coming Up In The Next Month’»

bushdown.gifAfter the recent resignation of Karl Rove, media outlets speculated on what the rest of President Bush’s term will look like without “the Architect.” The President is “fighting lame duck status,” reported the AP. In response, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow shot back: “As the president has said many times, he’s going to sprint to the tape.”

But even Tony Snow doesn’t want to be around for that sprint. In an interview with the conservative Hugh Hewitt show, Snow signaled that he will not stay until the end of the term. He also mentioned that there are “probably a couple” of other high-level resignations “coming up in the next month or so.”

HEWITT: Are there any other resignations upcoming, Tony Snow?

SNOW: I think that probably…as Josh said the other day, he thinks there are probably a couple coming up in the next month or so. […]

HEWITT: Your intention to go the distance, Tony Snow?

SNOW: No, I’m not going to be…I’ve already made it clear I’m not going to be able to go the distance, but that’s primarily for financial reasons. I’ve told people when my money runs out, then I’ve got to go.

Snow’s upcoming departure makes him one of a bevy of top administration officials who, since November, have left their posts. ThinkProgress has compiled a list of some of the key resignations:

- White House Senior Political Adviser Karl Rove
- White House Counselor Dan Bartlett
- White House Budget Director Rob Portman
- White House Counsel Harriet Miers
- White House Political Director Sara Taylor
- White House Director of Strategic Initiatives Pete Wehner
- White House Deputy National Security Adviser J.D. Crouch
- Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty
- Acting Associate Attorney General William Mercer
- Justice Department White House liaison Monica Goodling
- Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
- Army Secretary Francis Harvey
- Joint Chief of Staffs Chairman Peter Pace
- Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson
- U.N. Ambassador John Bolton
- USAID Director Randall Tobias

With so many key staff departures, the AP reports that “Bush has decided he might get more done in his final months by going it alone,” making increased use of executive orders and veto power.

Digg It!

UPDATE: Former Clinton chief of staff John Podesta writes on this subject. From this morning’s Washington Post: “Did the edict from White House chief of staff Josh Bolten that anyone still working by Labor Day was expected to stay until the end really influence Rove’s decision to leave? That’s an edict I did not and would not issue, because I assumed that the people who gave 110 percent every day wanted to be there to make a difference, not because of obligation.”

Hopefully Darth Cheney will be the first of those “other” officials to call it quits.
And then the question becomes how much Bush enabling were these Bush “officials” actually up to….i.e. will Bush actually be able to handle the presidency on his own? With the brain gone one has to wonder.

  9. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

I don’t put too much stock in this phenomenon. It’s been pretty common in our history for people to leave an administration as it winds down. Rove and others like him, however, should be closely watched in their untethered state.

I’m sure he had to take a huge pay decrease to work for the President. And with his illness, it’s not inconceivable that he would be out of money.

  12. Texasjuice Says:

As a cobinet official Snow has some of the best medical insurance in the world, (outside of France). Surely his cancer is not why he is running out of money.

  13. G Whiz Says:

I don’t want to see any of these people quietly depart into the sunset. I want to see them escorted to a court where they are tried for crimes against our country and the world. And, if convicted, served just punishment.

These people have trashed our liberties, our Constitution, our reputation.

As for Snow, the guy is a smart-ass liar. For somebody who has a fatal form of cancer, one would think he would show more compassion for Americans in general and much less compassion for the man he lies for.

  37. dxwoods Says:

I understand Tony Snow’s health is a prime consideration. But “when my money run’s out”? Is it that his health insurance benefits as an employee of the President don’t cover his pre-existing condition? He’s not working for free and without benefits is he? I’m sure he had to set up blind trusts or some such thing to take the job in the administration but I’m really confused about how he would even have to consider that he’s running out of money. Didn’t he make 6 or 7 figures a year working for FOX? He must be being paid at least a 6 figure sallary to take flak for the boss. Is he just being disingenuos or being guarded to keep from talking about his health? He can’t be saying that money comes first over service to his country so he must just be covering for his leaving for health concerns.

Snow not left a higher paying job to become the WH Spokesman. He always had concerns about bills and a busy schedule.

Snow said on The O’Reilly Factor that he was concerned about the loss of family time and the massive cut in pay.

What’s this about running out of money? The press secretary job doesn’t pay enough to live on? Do the taxpayers know how impoverished our public servants are?

If Snow has an opportunity for a job with better pay, he has the freedom to leave his current job and go for it. But it’s an insult to us middle-class working Americans who manage to pay our bills (with some struggle, at times) on our average middle-class wages to say he’s “running out of money” on what to us would appear as a generous income.

And before I get blasted for not making allowances for Snow’s medical bills — I’m sure that he has a very nice medical plan, paid for by us.

Be careful what you wish for, I treat many pts from Canada because they cant wait 6 months or a yr to see a Dr, These people are paying 40 and 50% income tax rates for a horrible health care system. You may hear people say that its a good system if you only go in for a checkup once a yr, but getting any sort of fast growing cancer you cant wait for the tests- you come to the US. You know it would be cheaper if they forced us to buy health insurance out of our paycheck instead of taxing us another 20-30% above what we already pay in income taxes. They take out fed, state, medicare and ss taxes, so they may as well just take out the insurance premiums as well, however give the people a choice in what plan they want and what Dr they want.

And that’s fine. But there’s a difference between “I could be making more money doing something else” and “My money is running out while I’m in this job”. Anyone who is running out of money on a six-figure salary, even in a high-rent city like Washington, needs some basic lessons in personal budgeting.

Where are they now to say that Snow should have been prepared and that his situation is of his own making?

    Comment by a patriot acting — August 16, 2007 @ 2:11 pm

Very good point. We recently had a thread (Sicko?) that included a story about a retiree who had a chronic disease and had lost his health care benefits when his former employer tanked. One of our trolls claimed it was the guy’s own fault for not having a backup plan. Somehow, I think we’ll not hear from that troll about Snow’s failure to properly plan his life.

During WWII, a lot of successful businessmen came to Washington for a dollar a year in order to help with the war effort. In spite of their loud noises about the War on Terra, I don’t think we’ll see much of that from the “conservatives.”

Snow said on The O’Reilly Factor that he was concerned about the loss of family time and the massive cut in pay.

    Boo f’n Hoo
You don’t feel sorry for him because of the cancer, you feel sorry for him because he went from most likely a million a year salary down to perhaps $300,000 a year PLUS free health care. Maybe you make the same and can feel his pain? To SnowJob I guess that’s just scraping by. He couldn’t afford the new Lexus this year.

What’s really pathetic is that he didn’t even bother to use the more acceptable excuse that Rove used - spending more time with the family. It’s all about “running out of money”. Running out of superfluous spending cash. Greed. Book deals and new Reich Wing shrill show offers are just too tempting to fulfill his “honor(able)” term.

Fred only lasted one term. Price beat him in the 1996 election. It wasn’t that Fred voted the wrong way — he was an obedient Republican — it was that he SAID something stupid that convinced the folks back home that he was completely out of touch with their reality.

What could he have possibly said to turn off voters? He said that his $133,000 salary put him at “lower middle class”. When asked by his rather incredulous interviewer what “middle class” would be, Fred pegged that level at around $300,000 to $700,000 per year.

I am reminded of the political demise of Fred when Snow talks about running out of money.

I think almost anyone could be sympathetic to that, but why didn’t he just say he was leaving to spend more time with his family because of his illness? That seems a lot more pallatable than taking the money-grubber way out.

As an aside, to all those that are still using Canada as “the example” of Universal Healthcare(#70), remember they are ranked pretty far down on the WHO list of quality of healthcare systems (just above us I believe), so I’m thinking they aren’t the best source of comparison. Also, living in the deep south, a co-worker just had to wait 4 months and drive 800 miles just to get a procedure done by a urologist because there are none practicing in our area (it isn’t profitable enough because most of the people where I live are poor). So it seems to me you have pretty bad things potentially in any healthcare system that isn’t administered properly.

I have compassion for Snow, and I believe there’s an excellent chance that he IS leaving for health reasons and doesn’t want pity from anyone.

However, the lie he came up with still calls for pity — not for his ill health, but for his stupidity.

  121. Kay Says:

  122. greylox Says:

**These guys are hysterical. It’s not just Tony Snow (who probably WILL die if he stays in his soul-devouring job). They want to show us that they have been making huge “sacrifices” by working for the White House. Their families. Their finances. How many of them have used either “need more time with my family” or “need more money,” as their reason for leaving? How many of them got “real” jobs (non-lobbyist) afterwards, or spent any more time with their families?

  123. Mr. S Says:

I’m surprised Snow didn’t just say that he may leave to “spend more time with his family and evaluate his opportunities.” This would have been more dignified than saying that when the money runs out, he’s out of there, and is a rare lapse for Tony.

It would also keep his options open. If he is too sick to work, the all-purpose alternative explanation above covers it, without having to explicitly say that he is too sick to work. And he will undoubtedly be evaluating his opportunities, because as a former W.H. spokeman and Bush apologist, he will undoubtedly have them.

If he has the strength, he can write or narrate a book. He can give seminars to corporations on how to represent themselves effectively. He can give private advice to clients.

And if indeed you are running out of money, I guess that’s what you get for working for people who believe in “winner take all.”

  124. Spudge_Boy Says:

This coming from the crowd that fights every time Dems want to raise the minimum wage above $5.15 per hour (10k)! Unlike 47,000,000 Americans, Snow has health insurance. Doesn’t he also have investment income from all those millions he made at Fox?

Reminds me of the 1992 campaign. Clinton proposed raising taxes on individuals with incomes over 200k per year. Demi Moore said “He shouldn’t do that. It’s pretty hard to live on 200k a year”.

Bill O’Reilly likes to tell the story of growing up working class in Levittown. He never lived there and his father’s income was in the top 10%. Limbaugh gets $25 million per year from NBC (GE).

Why TP needs registration (if this sounds familiar to you, there’s a valid reason):

I ran a discussion forum for about 4 years from 2000-2004 called “The Dumbya Chronicles”. You can still search on the name on the net and read all the messages. I left it out there so people can see the things we discussed.

I had to censor people. First of all were the Republicans and Freepers who were intent on disrupting the site. Free Republic (Freepers) in particular has groups of people who get together and attempt to overwhelm left wing sites with right wing posts and will do just that if you allow them unfettered access. Imagine if all the right wingers Rob has already kicked out of here were still here doing there thing.

Then came the crazies. People like the person on the web that calls themselves Kathaksung. Kat showed up on my forum one day and started posting some of the wildest and darkest paranoid conspiracy theories you can imagine. You can see some of Kat’s stuff here

I wrote Kat a personal email urging he/she to get help and that although I was not a practitioner, I thought I clearly recognized the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia and that there were drugs that would help him/her and that I cared about him/her and wanted them to get help and be happy. I’m not sure what ever happened.

So, we have censorship of Republicans/Freepers and censorship of those I was reasonably sure were insane.

I then discovered that there were some people who were determined to fight with and insult people. They didnt attack arguments, they attacked people. Membership began to drop as these people were harassing and driving away people who didnt want to have to deal with that. I had to ban those who behaved this way.

That is just the beginning. You can say you should never censor anyone on an internet forum but if you ever try to run one, if you make it your policy not to censor or limit any discussion, you would watch it degenerate into chaos and anarchy very quickly where no sort of rational and decent discussion can occur. That isnt what I wanted for my forum.

The only patients you’d get from Canada that do that is the very wealthy because they know the wealthy can buy better health care than the poor get in the U.S. Wealthy people hate meritocrasies because they can’t buy their way in and hate waiting behind the poor or those in greater need. Canada’s heath care is not horrible at all. It ranks well above the U.S. We have a life expectancy 3 years longer than you. Only the rich and the least needy (but biggest whiners) complain about waiting lengths which are not really any worse than the U.S. and include those without health insurance, except if you only look at the wealthy.

If Bolton actually said those words, then Dubya is treating his staff like he treats the military….. with a stop loss order. How funny is it that he has to use that tactic to keep both his “team” on board as well as a way to have a back door draft becuase he has destroyed the military!

Oh, yes, I know, he’s said he’ll be around for a long time. But the simple truth is, liver cancer, spread to the nodes, he’s a goner. He’s retiring because quality of life doesn’t include telling lies for Bush anymore.

Basically Tony Snow deserves to quit more than any of them. I’m glad he’s going to do so. As far as I’m concerned, politics ends at the diagnosis of terminal cancer. Let’s do cut Tony some wee bit of slack on that point, shall we? Whatever he is, or has been in the past, he’s dying now. He deserves to quit lying before he goes to meet his maker.

Snowjob commenting about the money running out has some merit. Certainly his salary at the WH is substantially less than he made at Fox. A downward move like that is calculated, because the opportunities post-WH days(lucrative consulting gigs, book deals) can more than make up for it.

The curve ball thrown him was the caner recurrence and as much as I disagree with his toeing the Bush Cabal line, I wouldn’t wish that disease on anyone. If you’ve lived with it or lost a loved one to it, you’d better understand.
