Ignoring the text of the Constitution, Rep. Bill Sali (R-ID) recently claimed that religious diversity was not envisioned by the Founding Fathers. The Idaho Statesman followed up on the story and reports today that Sali will call Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) — the first Muslim member of Congress — to apologize. But Sali refused to back down over his claim that multiculturalism in Congress is dangerous:
“I think that Keith deserves a call from me — not necessarily because of what’s in my heart or in my mind, but because of how it’s been portrayed,” Sali said.
But Sali said he does think the country’s Founding Fathers created a government based on Christian principles and that the best course into the future is to follow those ideas.
The country’s creators fought for the “principles found in Scripture,” he said. “The dangerous part is straying from these principles.
“The idea that somehow we can move to multiculturalism and still remain the same — I think that’s a little dangerous, too,” he said. “From my standpoint, I believe the Founding Fathers were overwhelmingly Christian, and the God they were talking about is the God of the Bible.”
Christianists are a dangerous lot.
August 16th, 2007 at 10:22 amDangerous, foolish position. I guess he has an agenda to go along with this bigotry?
August 16th, 2007 at 10:22 amRep. Sali thinks the founding fathers were as dumb as he is…

August 16th, 2007 at 10:29 amInteresting that Rep. Keith Ellison is a reminder to these loudmouthed Christian extremists that we actually have some diversity in Congress.
Z, is this dude in your voting district?
When did diversity become a dirty word? It’s the only real solution to our planet’s illnesses. Nationalism has failed miserably around the globe. Corporate global control is the endgame for the Neoturds.
Let’s elect more Muslims to congress. Neoturds will be uncovered during their campaigns just by the rhetoric.
My God is better than your God. Childish at best, eh?
August 16th, 2007 at 10:30 amI guess Sally wants the US to be “Christian” like the evil a$$Klowns in the WH. Now that would be a scary thought going forward. But being from Idaho, which has a large White Supremist population, makes this more understandable. What a white, scumbag bigoted a$$hole!
August 16th, 2007 at 10:30 amBut Sali said he does think the country’s Founding Fathers created a government based on Christian principles
A position held only by people who have never read the writings left by the Founding Fathers.
August 16th, 2007 at 10:30 amSure, the religious right are crazy………
Yes dip$hit the founding fathers did not want religion to play a role in government…. It’s right there in our Constitution…….
Why don’t you Righties read it sometime??????
If the founding fathers intended Religion to play a role in government, then they would have put it in the Constitution…… Instead they made sure to put in the Constitution that Religion WAS NOT TO PLAY A ROLE……

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”

I guess his standpoint is to ignore what the Founding Fathers wrote about this very subject. How insulting to the intelligence of the Founding Fathers and to all Americans. Truly pathetic coming from a representative of the people to attempt to rewrite history.

Okay then. Without even getting into the first ammendment:
Pretty clearly shows that the founding fathers had no qualms about multiple religions in the Senate
Petty clearly shows they didn’t mind the idea of a non-Christian president.
There, nice and countered.
August 16th, 2007 at 10:35 am“From my standpoint, I believe the Founding Fathers were overwhelmingly Christian, and the God they were talking about is the God of the Bible.â€
Sali is totally ignorant of history.
Thomas Jefferson was a Founding Father.
Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.
-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782
Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between church and State.
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Danbury Baptist Association, CT., Jan. 1, 1802
Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.
August 16th, 2007 at 10:35 am-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Dr. Thomas Cooper, February 10, 1814
The Christian principles that he speaks of are common to Christian and Muslim faiths because they came from the same source — the Abrahamic tradition. The Muslims worship the same God as Christians. Muslims don’t believe that Jesus was the Son of God, although they believe he was a prophet. Jews are no different in this respect.
It’s strange to me that most Americans don’t know that all three of these religions come from the same source. In the end they all have the same God, and share the same principles.

All around this city I live in, and nation-wide, the level of homelessness and poverty is growing alarmingly. The increases have come over the last two years with the biggest increases being in 2002 and especially in the first six months of 2003.http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0308/S00011.htm
August 16th, 2007 at 10:38 amNice touch, eh? “I believe the Founding Fathers were overwhelmingly Christian.” Don’t let trivialities like facts impede your beliefs, Congressman. Thomas Jefferson was a known deist who held the organized Christian church in general contempt. Madison and Adams both found organized religion more of a threat than a benefit. George Washington himself wrote in 1789 that every man “ought to be protecte in worshipping the Deity according to the dictates of his own conscience.” Benjamin Franklin edited the Bible, for pete’s sake, to excise what he considered unnecessary or fanciful dogma.
Do the people who routinely cite the sweeping Christianity of the architects of this republic ever wonder why Jesus Christ is neither explicitly nor tangentially mentioned in either the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution? All references are to “Creator,” a phrasing far more appropriate for the Enlightenment-era context in which both documents were written.
How utterly tiresome all of this has become. I’ll never understand how people can claim to love freedom, yet object to its expression.

August 16th, 2007 at 10:38 amSali is using the sort of extremely primative reasoning which is pathetically prevalent today. Essentially his thinking goes like this:
Christianity = good
US Government = good
therefore US Government = Christianity
He believes this because he wants it to be true, and is unwilling to consider any information which might contradict his mindset.
We need to hold our elected officials to a higher standard. We must insist that those who represent us have the mental capacity to deal with the complex world in which we live. We have to stop electing people who show this sort of propensity to disbelieve and dismiss everything which doesn’t fit with their own preconcieved notions.

To top it off Ralph, Sali is not criticizing Islam as you seem to understand. He is dissing all religions other than his (which may include catholics, protestants but not mormon or some ‘rules’) AND he is pissing on the graves of the Founding Fathers.

I bash all religions. It just so happens that christianity is the religion that is most closely trying to tell me how things are and should be and for that christianity will continue to be at the forefront of my bashing. Islam is so far from having influence on my life that it doesn’t warrant as much attention AND islam is so far from influencing North America that it’s a laugh (although a sad one) that American christians think that islam posses a threat to your safety.
I care what you think because it’s flat out dangerous to our society. When you had up all the nobodies you will be sadly awakened to find reason has left you to rot in the annuls of history.
August 16th, 2007 at 10:55 amThe founders were smarter than most in those days, more well-read, more thoughtful, and came to the conclusion that Religion in its organized form was too dangerous to play any part in the governing of their new country. They were, of course, 100% correct in that assessment. It matters not which set of fairy-tales one decides to follow, none of them is to be held as part of the state. Islam, like Christianity, is broken up into several sects, all of which foolishly believe thaty have a lock on what is “right” for the rest of humanity. There is great common ground between Islam and Christianity: both are insanely ignorant and rely on fear and ignorance for their money. As in all things, follow the money. Sali should be impeached immediately; his views are anti-Constitutional, thus anti-American. Get rid of him.

Sorry guys despite your best efforts to make Islam into some sort of moon worshipping cult, they do follow the same God as Judaism, and Christianity. Historical Fact
look into the history of your own religion before spouting such utter nonsense
The Emperor was considered to be the manifestation of the Sun-god on earth. Jesus had celebrated the Sabbath on Saturday. To please the Emperor, however, the Pauline Church accepted the following changes: - Declared the Roman Sun-day to be the Christian Sabbath; - Adopted the traditional birthday of the Sun-god, the twenty-fifth of December, as the birthday of Jesus;

I am a Christian, and I won’t bash Christianity. I will criticize the perversion of it, the cherry-picking of scripture to justify bigotry and hatred, the use of Christianity as a cudgel to advance a political agenda, and pompous piety contests despite Jesus telling us “judge and ye shall be judged”.
And lest you think I give Islam a free pass — I will also criticize those who warp the Quran to fit to a hate-filled agenda, and those who would kill innocent people in God’s name.

Your fundamental assumption is wrong. Most liberals don’t bash religions. We bash the corruption and abuse of religions by people in power. This happens in all religions and I criticize this equally. I have as much problem with Dobson-style Christianity as I do with Zionism, Wahhabism, and Hindutvaism.
In the United States, what we see most often is Christian fundamentalism, so we have far more opportunity to criticize the corruption of Christianity than we do the other religions. It only looks like we favor Islam over Christianity because perverted American Christians give us far more material to work with.
It’s called “aspect dominance.” Look it up. It might not be on Conservapedia though so you may need to branch out.

Oh, and having a beer makes you a total degenerate.
August 16th, 2007 at 11:16 amWhat a jerk…What an idiot…what a dangerous unAmerican person:
Our entire nation is built upon cultural diversity….our American ancestors, his own ancestors for that matter, came from elsewhere…from some non American culture. None of them originated here except the American Indians…who were not Sali’s religion or culture either. What Sali means is he thinks “religious” diversity is dangerous!!! Sali wants to fashion a theocracy…where only what: Baptists? Catholics? should be allowed to rule….. (hmm maybe he’ld like to go back to white male land owners?) WHICH cultures would he not allow? Irish? German? Chinese? Or Would he ban ALL who are not his own religion …or just not christian? Maybe he would want us to go back to good christian ideals like burning witches or inquisitions.
All that aside: our founding fathers were very clear that they did not want ANY religion to be combined with government due to its harmful uses by totalitarians seeking power. Because religion is used by idiots to EXCLUDE people from government and positions of power & influence. Just like color was used….just like gender was used.
Those who seek to EXCLUDE because of cultural differences are not democratic in any sense of the word, much less living up to the American ideals that our country was based upon. Bet Sali voted to suspend the 4th ammendment too. Why doesn’t he just move somewhere else, where prejudice and theocracy rule?

Can I add Leo Strauss to that list?
August 16th, 2007 at 12:02 pmActually the Bible commands that this very action be taken… if someone: has a spiritual medium Leviticus 20:27, curses Leviticus 24:14, blasphemes Leviticus 24:16, makes an argument for another religion Leviticus 24:23, being stubborn, rebellious, getting drunk Deuteronomy 22:21, has sex out of marriage Deuteronomy 22:21, gets raped and doesn’t cry out for help Deuteronomy 22:24.
That took 5 minutes… If I had longer so would the list. But I think this covers some very important biblical transgressions worthy of death.
Muslims aren’t any more barbaric than Christians. They’re just more devout. To the extent that they are more barbaric is the extent that they are fundamentalist. It been less than 500 years, since Christians too were killing and torturing in Europe and elsewhere… Today they rationalize their text by saying that Jesus is nice, and changed all that. Except that Jesus himself explicitly denied changing even one word of the Law.
The problem isn’t fundamentalism though. The problem is the text. As long as there are people giving credence to it, there will be a wide variance of reactions to it, including fundamentalism.

This blather sounds a lot like all the scare talk we were subjected to regarding communism back in the 1950s (”they’re coming to get you! they’ll turn you into a communist! you’ll lose all your freedom!”). As it turned out, the fear of communism (and the resulting witch-hunts) was a far bigger threat to our society than communism itself ever was. Communism takeover only worked with oppressive dicatorships, not democracies.
Even if Muslims managed to become a majority here through migration, reproduction, and conversion (and that’s a tall order all by itself), they would have a tough road ahead of them imposing Sharia law here. Our constitution would prevent that, and any amendment to change that would require ratification by both houses of Congress and 3/4 of the states.
Think about this for just a moment. If the Christians in this country (who truly ARE a significant majority) can’t even get the Ten Commandments posted in every school, every courthouse, and every government building like they want — what are the odds Sharia law is will be the law of the land anytime soon?

That’s correct. 60 to 90 years is what I was taught. The New Testament is rife with discrepancies in regards to Jesus’ words. No one knows what he actually said, because the authors of the gospels were trying to make specific points to different readerships. You would think that if the Bible was the unerring word of God, at least there wouldn’t be mistakes in the exact words used by it’s central character.
That’s just my assumption of an all powerful God. Able to dictate accurately four times.

There’s a simple explanation for this - God can dictate accurately four times, but humans are prone to errors in transcription. At the time, God was still the mean Old Testament one - I doubt any of the Apostles were eager to ask Him to proofread it for them before they went to print.

“What was that?”
“I think it was ‘Blessed are the Cheesemakers’”
“What’s so special about the Cheesemakers?”
“Well, obviously, this is not meant to be taken literally. It refers to any manufacturers of dairy products. “

August 16th, 2007 at 1:03 pmThe Founding Fathers were mostly deists, and CHINOS. They had zero in common with today’s Religious Right. Zero. Adams, Jefferson, Franklin and Madison were often highly critical of Christianity. They did NOT want an American theocracy. They knew European history too well to want Church and State yoked together here. And, they were men of the Enlightenment, which was largely a reaction to religious oppression, repression and suppression. Ironically, the two biggest sources for our form of government were Pagan Greece and Rome.
Beyond that, I find it mind-boggling that anyone would say we based our nation on scripture. Obviously, those people haven’t read the Bible. There is no democracy there. But there is polygamy, slavery, rampant misogyny and sexism, extreme authoritarianism, imperialism, and massive oppression. If one were to actually read the Bible closely, and look at the way of life it depicts, the only conclusion to be drawn is this:
If we really based our government on scripture, America would look like Afghanistan under the Taliban.
In reality, the world of the Bible is barbaric, monstrously cruel, and no one in their right mind would want to return to those days. Our form of government is a major improvement over scripture, in every way possible. Why would anyone want America to become a backward slave state, with laws such as those in Deuteronomy and Leviticus?

They were khaki pants? Good lord.
But we’re going to take the word of a mythical Irishman?

Darryl has already explained that Old Testament laws are available on a Chinese menu basis: one from column A, one from column B, but Darryl and his ilk get to make the choices, not you!
I ran across an interesting reference last week that I haven’t confirmed. According to the author, the Bible contains proscriptions against adultery and against homosexual love, but there is nothing in the Bible that proscribes sex with boys. At least one bishop got nailed by the Inquisition because he preferred grown men; if he’d been content with boys like so many other priests and bishops, he’d have lived a longer life.

I consider myself more of a CIDO - Christian In Deed Only. I prefer to walk the walk rather than talk the talk.
