Bill Sali forgot to comment about the Budhist Congresswoman from Hawaii. Is he reserving some venom?

It seems these "great" political minds of the Republican Party pick and choose which part of the constitution they support. They ignore the founding fathers’ impeachment and American constitutional rights yet invoke the constitution when it suits them. Here's a news flash: The USA has been multicultural for over 200 years! And good grief - let's hope we don't remain the same as we are now. Hey "gitMORules" your spelling and grammar are atrocious - but you are a fine – and typical - representation of your Party!

Hey "gitMORules": Your spelling and grammar are atrocious - but you are a fine – and typical - representation of your Party! Have a turd-blossom sundae for your Friday Treat!

I, for one, am completely behind Rep. Sali, his comments, and his stance. And yes, Bob. The people of Idaho are proud.

Shut up emily, you don't speak for all Idahoans.

"But Sali refused to back down over his claim that multiculturalism in Congress is dangerous"

This is insanity. Why wouldn't Sali would different opinions in a legislative chamber? What is the purpose of a legislative chamber if not to give voice to different opinions.

Sali ignores history and the constitution. Ignores the fact that the Catholic/Protestant friction was driving the founding fathers.

Why doesn't Sali go to the Taliban held regions of Afghanistan if he is so uncomfortable with democracy?

I thought people came over to the new country to avoid religious persecution... which is why Jefferson, I believe?, chose to separate church and state. I think the republican Christians suffer from such a persecution complex that they would see Jesus himself as a threat to their Christian belief! I saw a great bumper sticker: Too many Christians; too few lions!

If Keith Ellison's religion is dangerous then Sali's religion can also be dangerous to the business of the people in Congress. His comments were bigoted.

Can you sign / publicize the following petition ?
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/protest-treatement-of-zed-and-ellison

thanks so much for considering this. / text below

Dear Representatives:

I would like to call your attention to the recent statement by Representative William Sali of Idaho regarding the Founding Fathers views on freedom of religion:

"We have not only a Hindu prayer being offered in the Senate, we have a Muslim member of the House of Representatives now, Keith Ellison from Minnesota. Those are changes -- and they are not what was envisioned by the Founding Fathers".
I beseech you, our three local N.C. Congressional representatives to unite and inform Representative Salli in writing, that the views of the Founding Fathers can be found in the U.S. Constitution, and that his statement is in direct contradiction to the U.S. Constitution he has sworn to uphold, which reads:
Bill of Rights - Amendment I, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,"
Additionally Article VI, paragraph 3, clearly states: "...no religious Test shall be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
The idea that membership in a certain religion should be a requirement of eligibility to hold governmental office is completely contrary to the fundamental core American values on which our Nation was established. Please take a stand against this gross rewriting of history, don’t let us forget that America was founded on the idea of freedom of religion.
Sincerely,

Let me try to post this again...

If you dig through the numbers you can always find something to say. If the bombings are down then you dig through all the ways people can die and find the one that is up. That is a poor handling of statistics from what I can tell.

According to icasualties.org civilian deaths have dropped dramatically as a whole in Iraq since the surge began. He says there has been a 25% increase in July over June. He is right but have a look at those numbers in context:

Jan 07 - 1802
Feb 07 - 3014
Mar 07 - 2977
Apr 07 - 1821
May 07 - 1980
June 07 - 1345
July 07 - 1690

Does that look like we have taken a step back? He said July deaths were 200% what is normally is in July. Do you know what the toll was in July 06? 1280. That means July 07 should have been over 2500 deaths to make the 200% mark.

Also, his reasoning about the increase of sniper related deaths is like saying car accident deaths are down as a whole but this new seat belt initiative isn't working because car accident deaths by blunt trauma are up.

I just don't buy it. Have a look at the numbers and you will see this guy is blowing smoke.

Christianists are a dangerous lot.

Nothing wrong with Christians ( real ones anyway ). It's the right wing authoritarians that are the problem and you get those in any religion at some point or another. Sorta like fungus on a month old orange. Eventually they will destroy themselves scrabbling for power and we won't have to deal with them anymore. We just have to survive their mechanizations in the mean time.

Actually, the Iroquois Confederacy had a lot of influence on the drafting of the US Constitution. Such concepts as individual freedom were not popular in Europe at the time and certainly did not have a track record of implementation among the various authoritarian monarchies that people fled for the New World.

Among the many contributions from indigenous American culture to the culture of the new United States (think corn, tobacco, etc..) is the contrubution to the principles in our Constitution. (As unpopular as our Constitution may be among modern conservatives).

So, were the Iroquois Christian? No. Is Sali a dumbshit? Clearly.

As in, the major Founders are much closer to Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett on this issue than Sali or Dobson, etc. etc.

They were deists, primarily. I'm guessing in the 21st century, they would be simpatico with the so-called New Atheism. At the very least, with good old fashioned agnosticism. I think they would be horrified by the Dobson, Falwell, Robertson camp.

I consider myself more of a CIDO - Christian In Deed Only. I prefer to walk the walk rather than talk the talk.

Comment by toasterhead — August 16, 2007 @ 1:30 pm

I think I should strike that. The Founders weren't CHINOS. Which kinda implies that they were in bad faith about their faith. In general, they followed some of the social conventions of the day, and church going was one of them. But in private, in their correspondence, and especially in their work in government, they did their best to separate Church from State and build that separation into a lasting monumental wall.

Sali and others would like to tear down the wall the Founders built. I'm guessing they just don't have a clue what the result would be if they succeeded. Though, perhaps they know exactly what they're doing . . . .

That clown! Run him out of DC on a rail. The nation was founded on religious tolerance, period. This is the end result of the religious right and their efforts to rule this land...except this time, those fearing religious persecution, as witnessed here, do not have a new world to go to.

Freedom of religion must prevail.
