Deck the halls with Ronald Reagan.

By Matt Corley on Aug 17th, 2007 at 11:20 am

Deck the halls with Ronald Reagan.

During a visit to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library this week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told former first lady Nancy Reagan “that he is working with other senators who want to erect a statue of President Reagan” in the U.S. Capitol. “There could be no more fitting recognition than to welcome his likeness to the halls of Congress,’” McConnell told Mrs. Reagan. Ironically, Reagan never actually served in Congress.

Perhaps a statue of Reagan handing weapons to Contras with one hand, while slipping Iranians cash with the other.

  2. Nachos of Justice says:

Ironically, Reagan never actually served in Congress.

True, but Reagan charmed the Congress — both Republicans and many democrats — to pass his largest policy reforms. No Republican had the Congress convinced more than Ronald Reagan, so a statue shouldn’t be out of the question.

If they want to erect a statue of Reagan somewhere, why not at “his” airport (Reagan National)? Perhaps by the air control tower?

  8. upside00 says:

I have been saying all along that the Repugs have nothing now, so are trying to channel Ronnie raygunz back, but this is too creepy… even for them!

While we have been having fun with the silly subject matter of this thread, I think we may have been missing a bigger picture here.

McConnell and his merry band of “other senators” seem to be finally realizing that Bush and Cheney aren’t doing much to enhance the Republican Party. By proposing a statue of Reagan (and getting some media focus on Reagan’s presidency), they hope to distract from current issues and “sell” to their base with an old product proven to work.

Sorry, Reagan cut and run from Lebanon in 1983, two years after Carter left office. In fact, Reagan was easier on the Soviet Union than was Carter. Reagan eliminated Carter’s boycott and economic santions against the Soviets that Carter had set after the Soviets invaded Afganistan. Reagan started trading with them again. Carter was actually tougher on communism than Reagan was.

  58. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Carter said we needed to find domestic renewable energy sources. One of the first things Reagan did was remove the solar panels Carter had installed on the roof of the Whitehouse. If we had followed Carter’s policies, the “oil wars” would have never happened, but Reagan reversed all of that thinking. Nice going, Reagan.

“Cutting and running” is picking up and leaving. Now try to think this through; I know it’s hard for someone like you – dealing with a hostage situation, successfully or not, is NOT the same as “cutting and running.” Do you get the subtle distinction, Einstien?

Slowly now, because it doesn’t look like u reed tu guud – Clinton was fulfilling a NATO obligation to stop the genocidal obliteration of Bosnian muslims. Reagan was attempting to deflect criticism of his cutting and running from Lebanon after getting 243 marines killed for nothing.

Reagan created a deficit and a national debt which was larger than all other previous administrations combined. In 7 our of Reagan’s 8 budgets, congress ended up agreeing to spend LESS than what Reagan wanted to spend.

But, let’s not let annoying facts get in the way of your Reagan mythology.

  132. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

    Myth: Reagan cut taxes.

Reality: Reagan’s policies were responsible for the largest tax increase in history – the doubling of the Social Security Tax. Since this only affected working class people, our millionaire press corp has not been interested in discussing it.

Myth: Reagan was tough on communism.

Reality: Reagan immediately lifted the Carter administration’s economic santions on the Soviets, thereby helping them to survive longer than they would have with Carter’s policies.

    Myth: Reagan cut federal spending.

Reality: The size of the federal govt. and spending increased under Reagan and 7 out of his 8 budgets called for more spending than congress eventually agreed to.

m12: “At the time, we had a $3 trillion GDP and were locked in a war with communism.
After 27 years, we have a $13.5 trillion GDP”

Again, we are now the world’s largest debtor nation. 27 years ago, we were the world’s largest creditor nation. Real wages for the vast majority of the American working class have been stagnant. Purchasing power for the average working class American has actually gone down. Poverty rates and levels are higher.

These things are the result of Reagan’s “supply-side” policies. Basically, what we’ve been doing for the last 27 years is borrowing money from the rich as opposed to taxing the rich. And, now, of course, we’re borrowing money from the Chinese and they hold over a trillion in our I.O.U’s.

You evidently think this is great economic policy. I don’t.

  140. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

We are now seeing many of the results of “supply-side” thinking. 28 years ago, Carter was arguing that we had to reinforce our infrastructure. Then, anti-tax zealots took over, the infrastructure has gone to hell, bridges are collapsing and pipes are bursting all across America. It’s past time to jettison this discredited, corporatist philosophy and get back to taking care of our country and its citizens.

  141. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Question for m12: How do unprecedented corporate profits benefit the majority of American citizens?

95% of all equity is held by less than 5% of the population, so it’s not like profits are being spread around.

Most American manufacturing has been off-shored, so it’s not like corporations are providing enough jobs.

Corporate taxes are only 7.5% of total tax revenue, the smallest percentage since 1934, so it’s not even like corporations are spreading it around by paying into the tax system.

So, yes, corporate profits are a big part of the expanded GDP, but how do they help the American people.

Please do tell, I’ve heard about this doomsday economy from the left since 2005!

  145. m12 says:

Question for m12: How do unprecedented corporate profits benefit the majority of American citizens?

Profitable corporations attract foreign investment providing capital for labor to work with and increase their productivity.

  146. m12 says:

Right now your markets are being held up by a reduced interest rate and high volumes of money being pumped into them from the Federal reserve.

Where do you think that money is coming from?

America’s credit card is being run up, in order to pump money into America’s finance industry without actually, clearing those loans.

The net result is that America has to pay more in interest, and eventually, will run out of credit. This, when it is seen in individuals, or other countries is called the debt trap, and you Republicans, have ever since Reagan been running America right into it.

Of course a liberal approach, would be to have the government buy the debt, drop the interest rates on those loans and work out easier repayment options. But then this would help people, which is totally

  158. Bruce Gorton says:

Why? Do you think the economy will stop growing? Why is our debt so bad when Japan has 3x the debt we have relative to their GDP.

How so? Because they led our nation into the wars of Korea and Vietnam, like Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson?

Because they unilaterally suspended habeas corpus like Lincoln? Or the Espionage and Sedition Acts like Wilson?

    Or FDR’s court packing scheme?

  162. Bruce Gorton says:

Why? Do you think the economy will stop growing? Why is our debt so bad when Japan has 3x the debt we have relative to their GDP.

Because a big chunk of your debt is with a nation which is a historic enemy of America, beating you in two wars, has a lose history with copyright, and is currently supplying goods (tyres, toothpaste, toys, hotel soap, sweets, sea food, pet food etc…) to America, which are downright dangerous.

Eventually America will put its foot down, and China will call its debt. It has a massive axe over your heads and no qualms about the welfare of its people. It is also a restrictive economy able to survive massive impacts and even benefit from them, as demonstrated by the Asian market crisis.

And no, your growth will not carry on forever, it never does. The economy corrects every now and then and you need to be able to fund the lean years.

  163. Bruce Gorton says:

    Help who, exactly?

    Comment by m12 — August 18, 2007 @ 12:35 pm

Okay, first it helps the companies involved. They get a market for what would otherwise be bad debts (Thus reducing their losses.)

Then it helps the people who owe the debt, because they don’t go broke and instead a plan gets made to help them pay off the debt.

Third it helps the Fed itself, because ultimately, debt always gets sold at a marked down price – thus helping reduce the need for higher taxes in the future.

This is as opposed to flooding the finance market with billions of dollars which only helps the largely irrelevant share price. Companies only get the money made from selling their shares when they sell them.

Of course a liberal approach of letting the government run the economy doesn’t work because government run economies don’t work….they never have. Letting the government be the loan officer is a bad idea.

  166. Bruce Gorton says:

    Tracy

    Lets see Tracy:

Your way, is just throwing money at the problem. No less expensive and it doesn’t do anything about the problem except keep share prices artificially high.

My solution actually entails doing something about it.

Oh, and why don’t you ask university students who take government loans whether it is such a bad idea to allow government to be a loan officer?

Your trouble is you hate government. You are an anarchist who thinks that because government does something it is always bad, whereas government, particularly when run by people who do not hate everything about it, has made massive contributions to America.
