Hanson on the ‘real problem’ with Abu Ghraib.

“Abu Ghraib was reprehensible for its sexual roguery and gratuitous humiliation, but the real military problem of that prison has been the serial release, not American mistreatment, of Islamic murderers,” writes neoconservative Victor Davis Hanson in the National Review today.

Sometimes the things these people say really make one ashamed to be a fellow American.

    Rest of the world:

Please forgive us. Not all of us are that stupid.

  2. Brian Keith O'Hara says:

    What a horrendous lie.
The firing of General Toguba after he charged the enlisted men, but before his announced intention to investigate who gave the order to torture and murder show the depth of evil.
Most of these prisoners were picked up in sweeps. Most were innocent of everything except violating curfew to get food for their starving families.
But I must admit that the people who humiliated tortured and murdered inmates at Abu Gahreib had the curtesy not to discriminate: the tortured the innocent with as much enthusiasm as they tortured the guilty.
    And I am ashamed.

  5. gummitch says:

Here’s a good example of how honest VD Hanson is:

“But now an errant bomb or single rogue jailer in Abu Ghraib will be blared live — in raw and unedited fashion without much of a context — to a housewife in Frankfurt or a farmer in Anatolia. Any single untoward incident can splash across the computer screens of billions, and serve as an instant referendum on the service of tens of thousands of American soldiers. ”

Oh, right, a “single rogue jailer in Abu Ghraib”. Is even the readership at the National Review this delusional? “Any single untoward incident”? Isn’t this Laura Bush’s line about a car bomb now and then?

The context, meathead, is the occupation of Iraq. How much fkn context do you need?

    Oh, right, I forget. He’s a genius.

  6. bilbobaggins says:

    Here’s something else he wrote.

“In Iraq, then, the question arises — can a liberal Western government defeat a barbarous Islamist terrorist insurgency while under constant audit — and remaining true to its own democratic principles?”

The thing that struck me about this was the “remain true to it’s own democratic principles”. Please tell me where in our democratic principles it says that we should invade and occupy a country that was no threat to us. Please tell me where in our democratic principles it says that we should torture people?

This guy is batshit insane and should be put away somewhere so that he can’t hurt anyone.

What’s sadder is these idiots wanting war with Iran, after the billions of tax dollars we’ve spent on nukes to keep USSR etc from nuking us, they’re dumb enough to think that Iran, in maybe 5 or more years will have their first nuke, and they think any country would be stupid enough to nuke the USA, knowing that ONE of our subs could turn any country into pretty much a wasteland. I don’t know about them, but I want my nuke tax dollars back since they’re not protecting us any way.

Sadly if we’re ever nuked, it will be a few lone extremists that managed to build, or buy one. Not backed by any country, and America will have to invade/nuke another nation that had nothing do with it. Much like Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11.

But, in our present circumstances, I think one would have to be fairly kooky to think that the Constitution is not the best instrument yet created by man for preserving a free and prosperous people.

I bet when you get in a fight, and throw one punch, you just claim victory and if your opponent keeps beating your head in, you just say “oh, I won the fight, but I didn’t have enough blood in my legs to keep standing”.

What differentiates many colleges and universities from each other in quality has much to do with the amount of money these institutions have to invest. Because the civil war that the muslims have been busy brewing for the last thousand years needs to have some sort of conclusion. Perhaps if the sides finally went at one another they might use up some of the inbred bloodlust that keeps them at each other’s throats.

Corpses piled in the streets throughout the middle east might bring the few sensible ones who live there to decide its time the muslim religion yanked itself into the 21 century.

The moronic assumption that we can somehow bring the millenia-spanning feud between these people to an end is a shining example of American hubris at its finest. You’d probably station American soldiers between lions and leapords with the same demented rationale.

Or maybe…just maybe…it will inspire these muslims to take up arms against the forces of the West that are causing them so much pain and suffering. But you’re probably OK with another generation of terrorists, since that provides justification for your hateful policies.

Considering Clinton’s AIPAC ties, I’m rather apprehensive about the prospect of a President Hillary.

Not that the American public actually has anything to say about it, though…

The moronic assumption that we can somehow bring the millenia-spanning feud between these people to an end is a shining example of American hubris at its finest. You’d probably station American soldiers between lions and leapords with the same demented rationale.

Ummm, you did read my post that said I agree with you that we should get our troops out of Iraq? In case you already forgot, its post #129. Heh.

Or maybe…just maybe…it will inspire these muslims to take up arms against the forces of the West that are causing them so much pain and suffering. But you’re probably OK with another generation of terrorists, since that provides justification for your hateful policies.

Im not in the government, they arent my policies, but then you knew that didnt you? How exactly would a civil war between two feuding sides of a religion inspire them to unite against a west (in this case the U.S.) who are no longer an occupying force? Arent we the only thing keeping them apart now, at least according to the current lib talking points? (hint: reference Schumer’s latest statement)

Did you even understand what I said? I want our troops gone because the savages in the middle east who are busy car-bombing one another need to get their ancient struggle over with and get on with joining the rest of the world.

No, we’re just hating on the little cowardly pricks like you who have weakened this country andmade it into a laughingsock world-wide and a target. You are too idiotic to even try to talk to. I’m done with you. Continue to throw sh1t on the wall all you want. It does no good. You and yours are on a downward spiral that you can’t stop. I’ll laugh when you hit bottom and crash.

    Talk to Bush.

I hear he’s giving them away.

  190. Gregor Samsa says:

See, the real problem with Abu Ghraib wasn’t the torture, rapes, or murders.

It was those bloody Iraqis who wouldn’t go along willingly.

Of course, it mattered little that most of the tortured at that prison, were not “Islamic murderers”, or even that some were minors.

So speak the sociopathic supporter and cheerleader of an equally sociopathic administration.

  191. GW Bush says:

Well hello…we true American patriots just don’t approve of inhumane treatment of fellow humans or animals or the envirement or just about anything, it is just wrong….who would Jesus mistreat?

    1. Would he promote the destruction of the environment?

    2. Would he promote the destruction of other human beings for control of mid-eastern oil?

    3. This list just goes on too long to post on a single thread, but you get my drift.

I am an atheist, but I am smart enough and humane enough to know that most of what Jesus taught was right, just not the God part….can’t be superstitious, but the words he taught to live by are so right on, too bad you Repukian scum can’t see that

  192. Probus says:

Abu Ghraib was a national embarrassment. Bush can never do enough to undo the damage it did to our moral standing around the world. It also damaged our standing in the Middle East.

    Comment by michael — August 18, 2007 @ 1:24 pm

Even if that is true, it still constitutes a violation of the Geneva Conventions, and a war crime.

    Thanks for playing.

Yeah, especially since the American miltary is the only one to ever mistreat prisoners. Unprecedented! ;)

  200. michael says:

“it still constitutes a violation of the Geneva Conventions, and a war crime.

Comment by Gregor Samsa — August 18, 2007″

The Geneva Convention does not apply to enemy combatants. What war crime was committed?

  201. Gregor Samsa says:

    What war crime was committed?
    Comment by michael — August 18, 2007 @ 5:43 pm

A lot of the prisoners tortured at Abu Ghraib were civilians, caught in wide sweeps in Baghdad, including the women who were raped and the minors who were sodomised, and the man who was killed.

Any military occupier is bound by the conventions to treat civilians humanely. A systematic failure to do so constitutes a violation of the convention, and hence a war crime.

    Thanks for playing.

  202. michael says:

” A systematic failure to do so constitutes a violation of the convention, and hence a war crime.

Comment by Gregor Samsa — August 18, 2007″

What convention are you referring to? Certainly not the Geneva, because it doesn’t apply.

  203. michael says:

“including the women who were raped and the minors who were sodomised, and the man who was killed.

Comment by Gregor Samsa — August 18, 2007″

Who raped and sodomized women and children?

  204. Gregor Samsa says:

    Comment by michael — August 18, 2007 @ 7:24 pm

The detainees were civilians so the Geneva Conventions certainly apply.

And as for who was doing the raping and the sodomising, it was the American prison guards, you know, the ones who were convicted and are now serving time in prison.

If you read the newspapers more often than once a decade you’d know and I wouldn’t have to repeat any of this. Here is a link to get you started. I suggest you read the text instead of just looking at the pictures.
