Sending more troops to Iraq is a bad idea. A 170,000 troops will make no difference to the violence on the ground. The surge has failed to control the violence in Iraq. Neither can Bush do anything to make sure there is political progress in Iraq. Bush’s only option should be to set a date to withdraw all troops in one year from Iraq.

The Russian region of Ulyanovsk has â€œdeclared Sept. 12 the Day of Conception and for the third year running is giving couples time off from work to procreate.

Great, as if the world isn’t incredibly overpopulated enough, now we have governments encouraging creating more humans so people can win lousy cheap game-show prizes. Good job, Russia.

For all of that money Stevens enabled (allegedly), you’d think he could have gotten a better looking house. I hope he doesn’t have to sell it because we may be seeing it next on HGTV while the good Senator is having a Coot-off with an aging architect.

People remember that the mid and late-1990’s were a great bull market; however, people forget that there were some dramatic market corrections in that period. For example, in 1998 the SP500 corrected over 19% in the summer!

Increasing volatility usually comes at an inflection point (turnaround) in the market. If the volatility increases and the market can’t make significant new lows or new highs, it means that the pressure creating the trend is evaporating or drying out.

Combine that volatility with extremes in market sentiment, and you have a recipe to catch the crowd leaning the wrong way. The market sentiment yesterday was as negative as I’ve seen it. The put-call ratio is at negative extremes. Turn on the news, and everyone expects the financial system to come unglued.

Tremendous buying opportunity. These kinds of opportunities don’t come around very often. For those folks who lament missing some of the great stock stories of the past year or so, Wall Street is offering a discount sale. Many wait for a dip to get in, but when it happens they sit on their hands in fear. Recognize that THIS is the time to buy.

I know my hernia was caused by excessive lifting. My doctor now recommends that my wife assist me when I urinate.
