During his tour of the Sunday shows this morning, Karl Rove attempted to downplay and dismiss his role in the CIA leak scandal, telling Fox News’ Chris Wallace that he acted benignly in his conversations with reporters about Valerie Plame’s identity:
What I did say to one reporter was, I’ve heard that, too. And what I said to another reporter, off the record, was, in essence, I don’t think you ought to be writing about this.
Appearing on Meet The Press today, Matthew Cooper, one of the reporters to whom Rove spoke about Plame, said Rove’s version of the story was hard to believe. “I think he was dissembling to put it charitably,” said Cooper. “To imply that he didn’t know about [Plame's identity], or that he heard it in some rumor out in the hallways, is nonsense.”
Cooper also contradicted Rove’s characterization of their conversation, describing the “essence” of it as much more than just an attempt to wave him off the story:
Look, Karl Rove told me about Valerie Plame’s identity on July 11, 2003. I called him because Ambassador Wilson [Plame's husband] was in the news that week. I didn’t know Ambassador Wilson even had a wife until I talked to Karl Rove and he said that she worked at the agency and she worked on WMD.
Watch it:
Cooper’s right. Rove is peddling “non-sense” with his brushed off description of his role in the leak scandal. On Meet The Press, Rove also declared, “if a journalist had said to me, ‘I’d like you to confirm this,’ my answer would have been ‘I can’t, I don’t know, I’ve heard that too,’”
But as Cooper notes, Rove not only confirmed to him that Plame worked at the CIA, but he willingly pushed the information to him without it even being solicited, telling him that she “works at the agency on wmd [weapons of mass destruction] issues.”
When pressed by Wallace about his conversation with Cooper, however, Rove resorted to the administration’s standard line when asked about inconvenient facts: “I don’t recall.”

Publishing pictures of prisoner abuse is exposing gross human rights violations; secret renditioning of suspected terrorists is a violation of other nations sovereignty, something we wouldn't want do to us; and exposing a program that secretly listens in on American citizens is encouraged by the Constitution and our history.
As for Durbin's comments, they were hyperbolic and unnecessary, and no, I don't agree with them. However, Kerry's comments were -- surprisingly -- true! Have you not followed the miliatry trials of the soldiers who raped, murdered, dissembled, and the such in several cases?

Another example is the legalisation of torture, however that is more a war-crime comitted by Congress and the Senate then by Bush, he, through his deputy was a major force in favour of it and he didn't excercise his veto to stop it. (Graham-Levin Amendment.)
This action violates the rules of war and the American constitution in ways which have not been seen since the civil war. Terrorism, though you wet your bed over it, is not a threat on the scale of the American civil war, a war has not even been officially declared.

So how about all those counties in 2004 where the polls showed that the Democrat was ahead by 5 points and then the Republican won by 5 points? Just a coincidence even though it happened in numerous counties? And what about all those counties where there were more votes counted that there were people in the county? There are numerous documented instances of election fraud out there if you care to take a look. What there are not is any proven cases of voter fraud such as those you are trying to quote here.

The Navy put together a esprit de corps film that stressed that point. All pilots who were shown that film increased their kill ratio from 2 in 1 to 7 in 1 in dogfights. Well no, it wasn't, Michael.
First of all, hand recounts are specifically provided for under Florida election law, and the Gore team was in compliance with that law when they requested them.
If you are suggesting that the order of a statewide recount by the FSC was somehow "against Florida election laws" you are also wrong. The discretion of the court under Florida statute and common law to fashion such a remedy was not controverted by the USSC.
You are suggesting that that was the reason that the USSC stopped the manual recount, and once again you are wrong. The court issued a stay of the FSC order for a statewide recount until the case could be presented to the court...it had nothing to do with the legality of the recount under Florida law.
When the USSC issued its opinion in the case, it did not suggest that the statewide recount was in violation of Florida election law, and it only "stopped" the recount until it could be conducted under uniform statewide guidelines that satisfied equal protection requirements. They held that the deadlines for submission of results precluded that from happening, and so the recount ended. But NOT because it was "against Florida election laws."

You are correct, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that the hand recount should continue even though it was against Florida's election laws. Florida Supreme Court was changing it's election laws right after the election and the U.S. Supreme Court told them they can't. Read "Breaking The Deadlock" by Richard Posner. You might learn a thing or two about the 2000 election.

We've heard much talk lately about Canada's "free" health care system, glorified in Michael Moore's documentary "Sicko."
Canada is certainly superior when it comes to providing all citizens with basic, preventative health care — an admirable feat.
But the births of the Jepp sisters are case in point that Canada's medical infrastructure is as flawed as ours, just on the other end. Woe be those like Karen Jepp and her girls, whose lives depend on access to specialized doctors and surgeons.
The chances of conceiving identical quadruplets are anywhere from 1 in 11 million to 1 in 16 million, according to perinatologist Tom Key.

Instead we went to war with Iraq, let OBL run loose and invited terrorists from all over the me to rush to Iraq to fill the vacuum left by Husseins execution. There was no al Qaeda in Iraq until we got there.

You are correct, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that the hand recount should continue even though it was against Florida’s election laws. Florida Supreme Court was changing it’s election laws right after the election and the U.S. Supreme Court told them they can’t. Read “Breaking The Deadlock†by Richard Posner. You might learn a thing or two about the 2000 election.

Oh Mikey, if you had even bothered to read the actual cases, you would have avoided looking so foolish in public.
In Bush v. Palm Beach Canvassing Board, the USSC examined the FSC's November 21, 2000 holding that Katharine Harris had abused her discretion when she refused to validate recounted election results. NOTE: this had to do with the date of the certification of the original count, not the recounts requested by Gore after the certification.
The USSC vacated the FSC holding and sent it back down for clarification of the basis of the holding. The FSC complied and submitted the clarifications while the USSC was considering Bush v. Gore, and so the two cases were combined.
It was before hearing the arguments in Bus v. Gore that the USSC issued an order staying the FSC's mandate for a statewide recount. It was the recount ordered in response to Gore's post-certification requests for recounts - which most certainly WERE authorized by Florida law, hon. The USSC simply ordered that the recount stop until they had heard the case.
Then they issued their opinion. Nowhere did they say the FSC had changed Florida's "election laws" by ordering the recount, nor did they question the court's authority to do so. They held that the recount must be conducted under uniform standards meeting equal protection requirements... except that it could not be completed in time to meet the constitutionally-mandated deadline.

I just read your posts on your blog, Mak, and I think you've done a really good job. I'm certainly no expert on Greco-Roman history or philosophy, but I enjoyed it anyway. It's good, clear, interesting writing.
