Arianna connects the dots.

By Faiz Shakir on Aug 20th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

Arianna connects the dots.

Karl Rove’s unprecedented use of federal assets for political gain meant relaxing federal regulations on big GOP supporters. Arianna Huffington writes that the fallout is predictable; in some cases, the public safety has suffered. “Coal mining interests have donated more than $12 million to federal candidates since the Bush-era began with the 2000 election cycle, with 88% of that money — $10.6 million — going to Republicans. And what did that largess buy the coal mining industry? Mine safety regulators far more interested in looking out for the financial well-being of mine owners than for the physical well-being of miners.”

Unsafe worker conditions don’t just happen magically any more than large fish dieoffs. The largest salmon dieoff in the history of the west happened as a result of a political policy by Rove in 2002. The lack of safety in the mining industry is also the result of political policy. Poison in our food is the result of policy.

But, look, we know what’s most important to the average Bush cultist – the overwhelming urge to make sure nobody lays any blame at the cultleader’s feet even though he IS the leader. That’s fine, but stop trying to compare him to Harry Truman, OK?

That’s probably not likely. But it would be nice if after one of these disasters it doesn’t end up that the person responsible for preventing said disaster was a crony of the Pres. It would be nice if the person was put in that position because of experience & skill rather then loyalty. That’s pretty stupid. OK, how about this: in Canada, there are more regulations which are designed to protect miners. For example, there are “safe rooms” in mines. Less miners die in mine disasters in Canada. So, try to follow this – if Obama or someone like him is running the executive branch, they will treat mineworker safety as the important issue it should be and there will be more regulations. This won’t stop mine collapses, but it may save lives.

How many more U.S. citizens have to die (or be severely injured) due to corrupt, greedy and anti-American Republican policies?!?!?!

I just finished reading the Star-Tribune article out of Minnesota that indicates that someone in the Republican-controlled Minnesota governor’s office nixed MnDOT plans earlier this year to start repairing (if not outright condemning) the I35W bridge that recently collapsed and killed U.S. citizens. The “cost” of doing either the repairs (or condemning the bridge and replacing it) apparently was the primary factor behind the decision to only do some more inspections of the bridge.

The head of MnDOT, a die-hard Grover Norquist Republican, who is also Lt. Governor, was probably the Republican who put “cost” over the safety of Minnesotans. This Republican with this die-hard “anti-tax” obsession just caused some of her fellow Minnesotans to die hard. Heckuva job. And Gov. Pawlenty is just as responsible. Heckuva, heckuva job Republicans. Too bad these two haven’t been arrested and charged with criminal negligence yet.
