MN state officials knew of bridge failure.

“Internal MnDOT documents reviewed by the Star Tribune reveal that last year bridge officials talked openly about the possibility of the bridge collapsing — and worried that it might have to be condemned.” Plans to reinforce the bridge were well underway when the project came to a screeching halt in January amid concerns about safety and cost. Oh my f*cking god. They should have shut that bridge down! What the hell were they thinking, allowing people to continue to drive across the damn thing?

  2. VerbalKint says:

Tim Pawlenty’s political career is over. Even though he wasn’t responsible per se for the disaster, his administration has been downright obstructionist when it comes to transportation spending, a consequence of which has been a palpable decline in road maintenance and snow removal. He eliminated the job of transportation commissioner and turned the role into a part time job for Carol Molnau, who is a certifiable Republican political hack. Molnau should have resigned by now, but she has the proverbial tin ear.

I’ve been following the story closely and I very much doubt it will come to that. On the other hand the state will be on the hook for large civil settlements with the victims.

The important thing at this point is to punish the no-new-tax politicians who have been bought and paid for by the hateful corporate Darwinists who believe that if no bridges fall down, then we must be repairing them too often.

  6. Raven says:

I guess I was just hoping that accountability for actions, or inactions, whatever the case may be, could be instituted for elected, and appointed, officials.
Maybe then these same would act appropriately, and such disasters would be averted.

I say Zooey should run for office. If we had more people like her who used common sense and competence in their jobs, this and other tragedies could be avoided!

Why on EARTH didn’t they close the bridge???

  8. Demsguiltyofbridgecollapse says:

I’m going to disabuse any libtards and progressives who are plotting to shift the blame of the bridge collapse in MN to Republican Pawlenty’s administration. This is just mental illness–proving Michael Savage is correct–if libtards actually incriminate Pawlenty. Here’s what’s actually the real story: despite the rating of the MN bridge as something like structurally deficient, this didn’t mean it was in imminent danger of collapse. With such a rating, said bridge only deserved more inspections and a focus on improvements–which it was already receiving. Nah, the REAL blame for the collapse belongs on Demoncrats and their insistence on pork inserted into transportation bills. As McCain noted, when pork is inserted into bills, it takes money away from stuff like bridges. As an aside, I bet the libs and progs–those who are not totally mentally ill–are angry they can’t blame Bush for the collapse since state gov’ts are actually accountable for maintaining bridges once the federal money’s given out.

Bullshiite of the highest order. If Minnesotans werent condemned to have how many billions wasted on the Minnehaha Choo Choo System, we wouldnt need to even consider taxes. That toy train has killed more people than it carries daily.

Why is the answer ALWAYS more taxes? How about diverting those wasted billions to the roads and bridges?

Well once again the “family values” party, the party that Bugboy Tom DeLay referred to as “we are the party of ‘god’” came through again. Rather than govern after being elected they just went about finding ways to lessen and loosen controls and now the bridge comes down.

Funny how everything turns to mierda when Repignicans are in “charge.” Three planes slamming into three buildings about 6 years ago come to mind when I think of stupendous examples of being asleep at the wheel. Correct me if I’m wrong, but a Repignican was in the White House when that disaster happened also. And wasn’t a Repignican also in the White House when a hurricane came calling on New Orleans two years ago?

Seems like disaster follows them wherever they go. At least they are good at winning elections and bashing those who want safety regulations.

    Heckuva job, Repignicans.

Or we could do what any business does (since the “conservatives” always set business up as the ideal) and ensure that we’ve allocated funds for maintenance of our infrastructure. I know that “conservatives” want to pretend this is somehow a partisan issue, but it is neither limited to one party nor to one state. It is endemic throughout the entire country, at the city, state and federal level.

The “conservatives” always want transportation money spent on building new roads, never on maintenance of existing bridges, tunnels and highways. The “liberals”, unfortunately, prefer to spend transportation money on public transit options that are shiny and new, but not necessarily the most efficient or cost-effective.

But the reality is that we cannot accomplish adequate maintenance with the existing revenue dedicated to transportation, even if we stopped building light rail systems today. It is especially not possible if we continue to spend billions of dollars invading other countries and wearing down our active duty military and the Guard so that billions more are needed to get them back up to strength.

Why is the answer ALWAYS more taxes? How about diverting those wasted billions to the roads and bridges?

    Comment by Vigo — August 20, 2007 @ 7:04 pm

You mean like the wasted billions we’re throwing away in Iraq. How about the billions given to Halliburton and Blackwater.

    Comment by VerbalKint — August 20, 2007 @ 8:38 pm

I’ve heard talking heads on the news trying to explain the bridge collapse in terms of a deficient, outdated, design. Which is probably why the troll brings that up.

The troll (and the air-headed news casts) are seemingly unaware that, with proper maintenance and repairs, any man-made structure can actually last a very long time.

Otherwise, there would be no Sistine Chapel, Tower Bridge, Eiffel Tower, or Statue of Liberty. The Golden Gate is almost twice as old as this bridge in Minnesota was and it’s still standing. The difference? Maintenance.

  94. gummitch says:

If you look waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back up in the thread (use that little wheel on the mouse to go up) you will see that Im not happy with the Minnehaha Choo Choo System that loses fifteen million dollars a year in operating costs and put the state behind by a billion dollars to even get built.

Fifteen million…you know why? Because no one rides the strange thing. It starts nowhere and ends nowhere and is ridiculed simply as a railed getaway car for thieves to get my tv back to their house more easily. It solves no traffic congestion, serves people who get better and cheaper service by bus and has managed to kill a dozen people already.

    Thats a start.

    Comment by Vigo — August 20, 2007 @ 8:37 pm

By Minnehaha Choo Choo are you perhaps referring to the light rail line in Minneapolis?

Ah yes, I see another intelligent comment on the subject.

If Minnesotans werent condemned to have how many billions wasted on the Minnehaha Choo Choo System, we wouldnt need to even consider taxes. That toy train has killed more people than it carries daily.

Billions? It was a little over $700 million. And ridership is higher than projected levels. I hear this same crap over and over from anti-transit people. “Ooooh, it’s killed people.” Yes. So do cars and people obviously need to be cautious around trains. “Oooooh, no one rides it.” Except the trains are packed, especially during rush hour.

    Bah.

  95. LibTeenie says:

Vigs, dont bother trying to reason with them, as you can see there is a serious regression factor that comes into play.

Ms. Zooey will of course complain that you call her something, then fire back some heinous slur as proof of her superiority. Ive learned from long experience here that eventually, no matter what you say, you will be branded as a moron, fool, f*ckhead or, in the case of zooey, a dingleberry.

  96. shane says:

    Comment by Vigo — August 20, 2007 @ 8:24 pm

No we’ll do it the Bushco way, wait for them to fix themselves. Or maybe Georgies armies of compassion will volunteer to fix the bridges and bring their own materials with them. But who is going to pay for the insurance on the project since it’s about the most dangerous work out there, idiot?

  98. verbalKint says:

When Vigo says that it has killed a dozen people already, he lies. There have been two deaths in three years. The Houston light rail line, of similar length, killed 11 people in its first 10 months. The Hiawatha Light Rail has an excellent safety record. The two deaths included an elderly man who drove his car through a lowered crossing gate, and an elderly woman who fell from a platform.

  101. verbalKint says:

#92 gummitch, the $700 million price tag is about right, but I don’t think that cost was borne entirely by Minnesota. The Federal Government kicked in a few hundred million. I say this because vigo specifically says that Minnesota paid a billion.

Great, you mean people who would otherwise be riding buses, the buses they see cruise by them and arrive fifteen minutes earlier?

Sorry no, I work all over the Twins and those trains are never packed, ever. The numbers are inflated by outstate geeks who come to watch a twins game and ride the choo choo.

And its only 700 million? Well great! We can add that to the 840 million for the new line to be built between StP and Mpls…lets see, carry the five…add two…divide by Pi…that equals….ummm…

  106. trueblue says:

Yep, thats what Im calling it. Now do what I do, get on I94, 494, 694 or the 35’s at about 0700 and see how much effect that train has on traffic. But at least shoppers can get from the MegaMall to the Nicollet mall and not have to worry about getting their feet wet.

Useful little choo choo, if you dont mind driving to the mall before you head out to catch a flight at the airport.

  108. verbalKint says:

#103 Vigo, you are wrong again, and again, and again:

    1. Studies by MTC have shown that light rail has added many new riders to the system.

    2. The trains are standing room only at rush hour, and are packed to the gills before and after Metrodome events.

And he doesn’t see the irony. Light rail is a failure because it doesn’t “do a thing” to reduce congestion — while he commutes in a truck. Got any numbers to back that up? The Taxpayers League of Minnesota has been making this bizarre claim ever since I moved here 18 years ago. So why isn’t the population of South Dakota growing then? We outperform all other states in the upper Midwest by a wide margin when it comes to economic growth.

and your candidates have what solutions? Only 1000 times worse than any Dem can come up with. 7 years of successful terrorist attacks at home, incompetent disaster relief, falling bridges, lawbreaking, spying on citizens, stripping citizens of their Constitutional rights, torture, destroying the military, and losing three wars simultaneiously. A record only a Republican rightwing bootlicking jocksniffing traitor could be proud of.

No, ya see you dont have to care about them because they wont get your vote anyway.

YOUR choices on the DFL side consist of: a Pakistan invader, a troops kept in Iraq’er or a manipulator of the poor’er. Quite the conundrum for a anti-war liberal wordsmith such as yourself.

I don’t have or need talking points of any sort; I have the truth and clear observation of a lifetime of watching you greedy, cowardly pigs take all you can grab, run away from the duties that you scream about, fail to defend your country while warmongering, and cower in fear at anyone who looks different from you. I’m a lifelong liberal, and until weak hypocrites like you and your thieving, scurrilous, deserting phony president came along to destroy 200 years of progress and freedom, I was extremely tolerant of even the rightwing idiots that plague this world. I was even dismayed when Reagan was shot, now I’m pissed off that he lived to start this slide into banana-republic, third-world isolationist ignorance that YOU champion. The poor are of far higher character than the rich, by and large, and the rich are extraordinarily poor in humane, Christian qualities in this country at this time.
