TV Newser reports, “Countdown with Keith Olbermann is getting a tryout on NBC.” Countdown will air before NBC’s broadcast of this Sunday’s pre-season game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers. NBC senior vice president Phil Griffin said, “The world has changed, and I think people have come in line with the smart, focused approach [Keith] has on the show.” In April, NBC announced Olbermann would be joining the roster of NBC’s “Football Night in America” pregame show. And Griffin adds, “It may be the first of several times you see Olbermann on the network.”

olberman is a straight shooter…. job well done keith!
August 20th, 2007 at 2:03 pmI’m happy for Keith. I enjoy watching Countdown and I hope this works out for him.
August 20th, 2007 at 2:05 pmHopefully, Keith will bring old friend Dan Patrick occasionally.
August 20th, 2007 at 2:08 pmThis is good news. The first half hour of Countdown is great stuff.
August 20th, 2007 at 2:09 pmPutting Olbermann in this venue is an attempt to temper him, if not ruin him. Footballers and progressive politics? Gimme a break.
August 20th, 2007 at 2:09 pmI’ve been a fan of Olbermann for a couple of years now. He’s the only “newsperson” on TV that tries to speak the truth. He is unwavering and he is on the side of the light. He doesn’t drink the kool aid. I pretty much don’t watch any other news on TV except for our local stations for local news. I rely on the internet for my news. Ha! Ha! As the comic book guy on “The Simpsons” said the other night. I get my news from the internet. I had not been watching “The Simpsons” for awhile and recently started watching it again and was pleasantly surprised to see them tweaking the Fox network.
Also, I’d like to see David Schuster get a chance at replacing some of the lard heads on MSNBC.
August 20th, 2007 at 2:09 pmAfter watching Keith on a daily basis and listening to many of his well thoughout comment sections, I usually respond with “Keith, I love ya man!”
August 20th, 2007 at 2:10 pmKeith is not a reporter/commentator that minces words — he tells it straight and asks the questions that other refuse to ask. Keep up the good work Keith. Congrats.
This is good news. The first half hour of Countdown is great stuff.

I agree! But when they get into that fox mode of celebrity worship and “funny home movie” stuff, I have to fast forward the TiVo, just like for the commercials.

After all, if you read the article before opening your mouth, which I am sure you did, then you know that they are not talking about having him announce sports.
NBC said they are airing his show COUNTDOWN with Keith Olberman, before the pregame show between the Steelers and the Eagles.
So we are glad you agree that what Keith knows how to do is report the news.

Still don’t get it?
August 20th, 2007 at 2:43 pmThis is a bad omen. Much as I like, and faithfully watch, KO, I’m very much afraid the boys at the senior network will use this as an opportunity to water down his style, make it more consistent with their corporate owners’ priorities, and generally pull the rug out from under Keith. If you disagree, name me one NBC “journalist” who has anything close to the integrity or kojones Keith does. See what I mean?
Keith has a very comfortable niche right where he is, but he is never going to be all things to all people, which is what the big network boys try to be, and why they so frequently fail. Trying to make him too mainstream will, I’m afraid, do him in as he becomes even more sensitive to ratings than he already is.
Nonetheless, I can only hope this will cause some of what passes for journalism at NBC to rise to a higher level, rather than dragging KO down to a lower one. GOOD LUCK, KEITH!

August 20th, 2007 at 3:33 pmThe trolls you are trying to help, were trying to imply that he was only going to be doing sportscasting, by omitting the main story and focusing on a side note, (we knew he’d be doing pregame announcing back in April, so its an old story, and merely a sidenote in this one) but airing COUNTDOWN on NETWORK TELEVISION, is a big deal.

August 20th, 2007 at 7:07 pmTracy: “Do you think there is a reason that O’Reilly rarely mentions Olbermann on his show but Olbermann seems to have an obsession with Bill?”
Yes, of course. Olberman has an obsession with O’Reilly because he objects to the fact that O’Reilly is a lying, propaganda-spewing bully who gets a free ride on FOX. And, O’Reilly rarely mentions Olberman because he is scared to death of him, knows Olberman is a much smarter and more clever man than he is and doesn’t want to give him credit for being a big pain in the *ss to him and FOX.
August 20th, 2007 at 7:10 pmTracy: “The fact that he is intellectually incapable of debating makes it clear why he chose the format he did.”
You have evidently forgotten that Olberman has challenged O’Reilly to debates on a number of occasions. Why would O’Reilly refuse to debate someone so “intellectually incapable?”

“Olberman has an obsession with O’Reilly because he objects to the fact that O’Reilly is a lying….”
No, he is trying to boost his ratings by mentioning someone who kicks his ass on a daily basis.
“And, O’Reilly rarely mentions Olberman because he is scared to death of him”
Now that is a good joke! Bill doesn’t think that Keith is worth his time. BTW that fact that Kieth can’t debate blows that BS theory out of the water. What’s Olbermann’s excuse for allowing debate on his show? I would have respect for the prick if he would.
August 20th, 2007 at 7:15 pmTracy, why is it so hard for you to believe that O’Reilly is afraid of Olberman when you know, from his actions, that O’Reilly is afraid of Al Franken. He won’t share a stage with him anymore. He won’t debate him. Al’s challenged him over and over.
And, just another reminder of what a lying snake this guy is: Bill O’Reilly on Good Morning America: “Look, if it turns out there are no WMD’s, I’ll apologize and I won’t support Bush anymore, OK?”
August 20th, 2007 at 7:30 pmIf O’Reilly is such a big, tough guy, why does he refuse to debate Al Franken and Keith Olberman? Is he psyched out that both of them are Ivy League guys? Is O’Reilly only comfortable when he can have someone’s microphone cut?
August 20th, 2007 at 7:36 pmBO is a coward. If you look up the word bully in the dictionary, you may see a photo of BO. He gets his jollies by knocking people down, thereby “proving” his superiority. He twist facts, he believes his opinions are unquestionable, and he refuses to even hear the words of a dissenter — he cuts their mike — he is a classic study in psych 101 — he is really a coward who disguises that fact with bluster and swaggering arrogance.
August 20th, 2007 at 7:37 pmO’Reilly guest: “Yes, I’ll answer that question, Bill, if you can tell me the difference between a falafel and a loofa.”
O’Reilly: “Cut her mic! cut her mic!”
August 20th, 2007 at 7:43 pm“The world has changed, and I think people have come in line with the smart, focused approach [Keith] has on the show.â€
- NBC senior vice president Phil Griffin
This comment has more holes than swiss cheese.
(1) The world hasn’t changed. Donahue was the #1 rated show on MSNBC prior to the launch of the Iraq war. There has always been a public hunger for critical analysis of this administration’s actions. You cancelled Donahue because you didn’t want to offend the administration.
(2) The “people” have always been smart. We were always, at least, ten steps ahead of the absolute GARBAGE NBC calls “news” with Brian Williams. Repeat: We’ve always been smart, YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN CORRUPT in your reporting.
(3) Keith’s approach is focused. But its really not that hard to do. You could even get that smug Brian Williams to actually become a trustworthy newsman. Why not start with actually reporting the news! Keith talked about the Downing Street Memos, Brian didn’t. Keith talked about the loss of Habeas Corpus, Brian didn’t. Keith reported on ALL the details of the Pat Tillman coverup, Brian didn’t. Do you see a pattern here?
August 20th, 2007 at 7:54 pm$73: Bill doesn’t think that Keith is worth his time.
Uh huh. This does nothing to explain O’Reilly’s obsessive attempts to counter Olbermann on his show, all the while going out of his way to avoid mentioning Olbermann by name. Olbermann, it’s true, talks a lot about O’Reilly. I think this is a good thing–it’s important for someone to rebut O’Reilly’s false claims, since O’Reilly is so famous and influential. (I say this grudgingly, as I don’t think it’s a good thing.)
I’m glad to hear Olbermann will get a shot at prime time. He’s earned it. And as a football fan and a progressive, I can say I’ll watch both the football games and Olbermann!

August 20th, 2007 at 8:17 pmThe STORY here, in the article, is about Keith’s show, COUNTDOWN, being on network television, a first for Keith, and MSNBC.
Since you cannot stand that Keith is making it to network teleivsion BEFORE Bill O’Lielly, you decided to try to imply that the story was about Kieth returning to sportscasting.
Your very first comment did that.

But Keith is NOT getting back to “what he knows how to do”, he’s CONTINUING his show COUNTDOWN, which is SO successfull, that its now moving to NETWORK TV.
THAT is the story of this thread, but you start out trying to get people to think its about him returning to sportscasting, which he’s not, and its not.

August 20th, 2007 at 8:23 pmIn April, we learned Keith would be doing some pre-game stuff, and such, but he is not returning to that field. He is continuing as host of COUNTDOWN, which is growing at a phenomanal rate.
NBC realized this and decided to move him to the big boys.
Meanwhile, Bill Oreilly, the babbling buffoon of the reichstag, is watching his ratings dwindle, as more and more Americans realizes they’ve been sold a “bill” of goods, and nothing more.
Bill will always have a fan base, as long as inbreeding exists, but most people are starting to get a good whiff of him in their nose, and changing the channel.

August 20th, 2007 at 10:24 pmOlbermann was a sports guy before he was a political guy. He is the guy Topps baseball cards consults when they have questions. I’m sure NBC is hiring former ESPN Olbermann NOT MSNBC Countdown Olbermann.
August 21st, 2007 at 1:13 amAs a libertarian I really enjoy his show. It certainly has a more left slant to it on some things than I personally care for, but anyone that can articulate those brilliant anti-war, anti-domestic spying rants will get me to watch more often than not.

The trolls are determined to try and lie their way out of this one.
But the facts are plain. We are not talking about Keith doing some pregame shows like we’ve been talking about since April.
We are talking about COUNTDOWN being aired on Network Television. THATS what the story says, and THATS what the story’s about.
August 21st, 2007 at 2:20 amBill Oreilly is LOSING viewers.
COUNTDOWN is GAINING them.
Why has countdown never, ever beat BOR or a taped BOR show in the ratings???
August 21st, 2007 at 9:56 amExcellent decision….kudos to NBC!
August 21st, 2007 at 11:01 amKeith had me at the reference to 10cc’s Deceptive Bends. Somewhere Edward R. Murrow is breathing a sigh of relief. I do watch Mathews to see what the rational right is thinking (even if alot of his guests are knuckledraggers), but then I wash out my mind with Keith!

I was just pointing out that Olbermann is a better sports caster and not a very good news caster considering news casters aren’t supposed to be bised. O’Reilly is not a news caster and has never claimed his show to be a news cast unlike Olbermann has. If you disagree….oh well.

“Its hard to attack Keith when he’s right, and you’re wrong.”
No Olbermann is a coward. He talks smack but can’t and most importantly won’t back it up. His show’s format proves that. Again if his show allowed debate and didn’t present just one side of the argument I would have respect for him.

That implies that I think he doesn’t know how to be news caster but does know how to be a sports caster. It’s just an opinion.
“THAT is the story of this thread, but you start out trying to get people to think its about him returning to sportscasting, which he’s not, and its not.”
Well if you want to falsely accuse me of something because your deduction skill are so poor…oh well. BTW you aren’t giving your cohorts here much credit for understanding what I ment. I think it’s just you and few other dumb asses being as sharp as a wet mop, that thought that.

August 21st, 2007 at 12:53 pmMy dearest Wormwood.
It has come to our attention that you have been unsuccessful at derailing the thread regarding one of the heralds of our enemy, Keith Olberman, and his success at being aired on Network Television prior to the upcoming game between two of the enemies football teams.
We have seen some of your less than adequate attempts to divert from the story and muddy the waters to the casual observer by implying Olberman was merely returning to sportscasting, thus obscuring the fact that his show, a show which vexes our master no end, is now going to reach millions through standard network television.
I am sure I do not need to remind you of the less than pleasant consequences for allowing the humans to continue their line of discussion regarding this hurtful move, nor should I need to impress upon you the distaste our master has for any discussion promoting this bloody thorn in our side. The dungeonmaster has repeatedly expressed his desire to familiarize you once more with the bittersweet pleasures that await you below, should you fail in this noble task, and I do not need to remind you that your probation is wearing thin on the paitence of the great one.
Nonetheless I am left but to encourage you to persevere in your efforts to usurp the discussions of the enemies above, and never permit coherent or topical cognizance of the issues which so disturb our mission and cause pain to him whom we serve. Be stout, and never yeild to the irresponsible printing of truth or fact until all knowledge gleaned by the humans, is our knowledge, and our truth.
I eagerly await your next report.
Do not fail me.
Affectionately yours,
August 21st, 2007 at 1:05 pmSCREWTAPE
I love it with Keith Olbermann skewers Bill O’Reilly with facts, facts and more facts to utterly discredit O’Reilly often-bombastic lies and distortions. Even Rush Limbaugh, for all his right-wing bombast, is nowhere near as fast and loose with the facts than O’Reilly is.
But you know that O’Reilly’s credibility is going downhill when he gets into a high-octane shouting match with fellow Fox News host Geraldo Rivera right on O’Reilly’s show. You’ve got to see the You Tube clip of O’Reilly and Rivera ripping each other over immigration.

August 21st, 2007 at 7:47 pmMy Dearest Wormwood.
From the tone of your last letter I am to assume you are either quite drunk, or inviting the torment of the hellfire prematurely, perhaps to facilitate some need to for misguided self respect. Might I remind you that crap rolls downhill, and you my nephew, are somewhere near the base of the mountain. I advise you focus on your goal, to disrupt the conversations of the enemy and obscure facts, preferably before they come to light in the discussion.
I will assume this deviation from course is a one time occurance and will thus not report it. This time. But be warned that future deviations from your assigned goal will not be given such kind leave, but will be reported as per procedure when an apprentice strays from the path.
But enough of the unpleasentries. I am proud of your commitment to disrupt the freedom of the enemy and to hinder the progression of truth, and I trust you feel my ever growing fondness for your devotion to your family, and our ravenous master below. As he, I indeed grow hungry. Continue in your endeavors and do not yield to the adversaries when their facts confound your diversion. Be strong and chin up, but do not disappoint me again.
Affectionately as always, your Uncle, Screwtape.
August 21st, 2007 at 9:36 pm“From the tone of your last letter I am to assume you are either quite drunk, or inviting the torment of the hellfire prematurely…”
No it’s just the messenger is trying to pass empty threats from an irrelevant source.
“I will assume this deviation from course is a one time occurance and will thus not report it.”
No, I suggest you report it now…before you forget.
“I advise you focus on your goal, to disrupt the conversations of the enemy and obscure facts, preferably before they come to light in the discussion.”
I advise you to take your own advice.
“I am proud of your commitment to disrupt the freedom of the enemy and to hinder the progression of truth,…”
The enemy hasn’t progressed at all in the presentation of the truth.
“Continue in your endeavors and do not yield to the adversaries when their facts confound your diversion….”
Again the enemy has yet to present any truth.
“Be strong and chin up, but do not disappoint me again.”
Or what? You will write me another long winded letter stating nothing worth listening to?
My suggestion to you is go back into training with your master because you have yet to qualify as a worth messenger.
August 21st, 2007 at 9:46 pmWhats a “worth messenger”?
August 21st, 2007 at 9:53 pmYou really are too stupid to talk to tracy.
August 21st, 2007 at 9:56 pmMy dear Wormwood;
I fear you are letting the enemy confound and derail your efforts. I hear desperation and confuson, both signs of a weak mind, and weaker soul. I am sure you know how our adored master delights in the weak mind, and a strong soul makes for a stringy meal, so might I persuade you to buckle down to the task at hand, and do not let yourself be so easily distracted by the fancy words of the enemy. Focus, and remember the reward for those who fail us, is an unpleasant one.
Serve us or be served to us. Its your choice.
Your loving uncle, Screwtape
August 21st, 2007 at 10:09 pmGo, Keith! I am such a huge fan of the show. He’s our Edward R. Murrow. His heroic commentaries have been known to move this old cynic to tears.

“…and do not let yourself be so easily distracted by the fancy words of the enemy.”
The enemy, i.e. you, considering you work for them, uses fancy words in order to sound more intelligent but it only makes you look even worse not to mention vain. Please tell you master that you have failed due to shear incompetance on you part.
“Serve us or be served to us. Its your choice.”
