Petraeus To Testify Before Senate On September 11

Petraeus To Testify Before Senate On September 11»

petraeus_testify.jpgThe much-anticipated Senate testimony of Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, regarding the situation on the ground in Iraq has now been scheduled for September 11th. Petraeus’ testimony will accompany a September 15 status report from the White House that is expected to be a key moment in the debate over American involvement in Iraq.

The timing of Petraeus’ testimony was first revealed this morning by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in a conference call with conservative bloggers. According to the National Review’s Jim Geraghty, McCain said he had “been told” Petraeus would testify on the 11th:

The calendar I’ve been told is that Petraeus testify 11th. We’re off September 13 and 14 for Rosh Hoshannah. The Senate debate will begin September 18th.

Geraghty’s account of the conference call has been confirmed by other bloggers on the call, including the Weekly Standard’s Michael Goldfarb and the American Spectator’s Jennifer Rubin.

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe confirmed the testimony date during a press briefing on Air Force One today:

Q And the second one is, there’s been some confusion about the whens, hows, wherefores of the Crocker-Petraeus testimony to Congress. Can you say when they’re going to testify before Congress and under what conditions?

MR. JOHNDROE: Yes. General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker will testify in open hearings on the Hill. Administration officials are reaching out to Hill leadership today to discuss with them the potential dates for that testimony. Given the tight schedule leading up to September 15th and the congressional recess with Rosh Hashanah coming up, the likely dates for testimony are September 11th and 12th.

Q That’s really just because of the tight schedule and not because it’s September 11th?

MR. JOHNDROE: That’s right. Congress is not — as of right now, based on the last we checked, Congress is not in session because of the Rosh Hashanah holiday, very much the week leading up to that Saturday, September 15th.

Petraeus is mandated by Congress to testify about the Iraq status report before the document is delivered on September 15.

Digg It!

wow. thanks again democrats for allowing the bush admin to play you like a fiddle. you fell right into their trap, now they get to use 9/11 again to bash you into the ground and continue this war.

  2. chad Says:

So now they are trying to invoke sept. 11th again? Will Guilani be there. Give me a break we already know the white house has written the speech.

  3. RUCerious Says:

    First Question:

How much of the BS you are about to report on was authored by the White House?

If the answer is over 10%, kindly dismiss the puppet and request the puppeteer deliver the report.

Sounds like a good day for it.

STILL trying desperately to connect Iraq with 9/11????

    OH the charade…

  8. oh brother Says:

So basically this will receive no news coverage because the MSM will cover the ceremony, the controversy around the ceremony, W at the ceremony, etc etc

How about a story about how 6 years later we still don’t have OBL, EVERYONE hates us now, and we invaded the wrong country….nah- my money’s on flag waving and Guiliani in a fire helmet

  9. andy phx Says:

Looks like more psyops from the administration still trying to ingrain Iraq and September 11th into the psyche of the American people. They could have moved the release of the Patraeus’ report to the 16th and had his testimony on the 12th. Their scumbaggery has no limits.

  10. Snidely Whiplash Says:

#6: Funny. Actually, Petraeus was going to title the report “Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States,” but he was afraid Bush & Co. would ignore it . . . AGAIN.

  11. Chris from Maine Says:

    heres a prediction :

during the testimony, the MSM will have 2 images on the screen. petraeus testifying on one side, and 9/11 images and ground zero on the other.

most people wont see petraeus testimony, and the media wont report it. Bush will come out the next day (or the day before) and tell the media what to report about petraeus, and they will fall into line and report what Bush tells them to.

  12. Spudge_Boy Says:

Sounds like a good day for it.

    Comment by Ringo — August 20, 2007 @ 2:24 pm

Absolutely the best day they could do it. September the 11th, the day NO Iraqis attacked America.

  14. Krazny Says:

What a craven attempt to either cover up anything Petraus has to say, not that it matters since the White House has written his report anyway, But also a continued attempt to tie Iraq in with 9/11. Not a very good move politically though. A ham-handed attempt to manipulate the public. I am sensing a certain desperation on the part of neo-cons.

  15. tom Says:

Two bits of irony of the September 11 date here:

    1. tie it to 9-11 — inappropriate since there is no connection

    2. deliver it the day before the Rosh Hashanah holiday — appropriate since we are fighting this war for Isreal

  16. bobwurst Says:

If the dems had a spine this could backfire. Imagine the questions: “on this solemn anniversary, why haven’t we captured bin laden,?” or “on this solemn anniversary, why have we wasted so much national treasure in the wrong country?”

  17. Damian Says:

That means the WH is already working on a draft to be delivered to Betrayus probably around two weeks from today. He’s got to see it well ahead of time to make sure he gets his testimony straight.

Looks like the progressive military-haters will be excitedly penciling in Sept. 11 (also the day they celebrate the 911 attacks as “America’s fault”) as the day they will all get together and smear Patreaus as just another puppet in the Bush regime! Progressive traitors have been in the run-up to Petraeus’ testimony already preparing their defamatory arguments they will use to further distrust Petraeus and insult the military’s independent and authoritative review of Iraq’s surge. Progs base this on an LAT forgery last week that the WH will actually write Petraeus’ report, but what they conceal is that a certain House resolution actually mandates the WH to write the report while also including Petraues’ separate report on Iraq. If progs deride Petraeus’ testimony, they’ll admit to not just hating Bush’s war policy, but also the US military’s honest testimony if it claims success.

If the Bushbots can get a General to do a dog and pony show on September 11th before our nation’s congress, reading from a politically contrived script written by White House Republican propagandists, there is nothing these immoral scumbags won’t do to continue the bloody destructive mess they’ve created in Iraq. And IF Patraeus is a willing facilitator of denying and or hiding the truth, he should be tried as a traitor to our nation’s military defense. Any soldier that cares more about his career than his troops should be fragged!

“Osama bin Laden is a Saudi, correct?”

“Isn’t it true that only 10% of the people killing Americans in Iraq are non-Iraqis?”

    And:

“Isn’t it true that of the foreign fighters killing Americans in Iraq, most are Saudis?”

  35. Angry One Says:

As for the content of the looming report, anyone who has ever used the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program knows what’s coming next. Americans should expect to see the old “Fill Right” trick. That is, when producing a long-term financial model or forecast, the Excel user in the absence of research, data, or just common sense, simply copies the value or formula from one cell (for, say, monthly or quarterly sales) to all the succeeding cells (months or quarters in ensuing years). The result is an impressive looking spreadsheet, but one whose projections are baseless and without foundation.

As the interim surge report made clear in July, President Bush like any failed CEO has been relying on the old fill-right gimmick since the Iraq war commenced. Starting in 2003, Bush simply selected the cell containing the phrase “We’re Making Progress” and filled right…

The theocracy-weary, founding fathers are turning over in their graves - a tiny, faith-based theocracy in Palestine has such disproportianate influence over the American government, that Jewish holdays are now considered American Congressional holidays. Anyone who would dare to question this arrangement must be a terrorist-lovin’, antisemite. Right?

No, the Israelis do not take an Easter or Christmas recess to show solidarity with their Christian American benefactors - why not? Could it be that Americans love Israel much, much more than Israelis love America?

Congressman John Boehner has claimed that if the US pulls out of Iraq now, it will be the end of Istrael “as we know it”. The logical conclusion: This lethal and costly US war in Iraq should be considered military aid to the Jewish State, as that ill-conceived, mis-adventure in Mesopotamia is being waged specifically for Israel’s direct benefit.

Response to #91, Makarios, who asked “Why do we love Israel so?”

Simply put, it is collective guilt for America’s complicity in the Holocaust. FDR could have bombed the rail links to the death camps, he did not. And when the emaciated Holocaust survivors sought refuge in post-war America, they found the the Statue of Liberty’s promise was as empty as the statue itself.

Rather than invite millions of unwanted Jews to America, Truman opted to recognize, arm and bankroll the Jewish State in Palestine. Remember, Jews and “negroes” were personae non gratae in the USA at the time.

Israel is rated as a close ally of the USA, yet no Israeli troops have ever served in any war that the USA has fought in. Why not?

Israel did attack the USS Liberty in June, 1967, a deliberate attack that lasted for several hours - thirty-four US sailors were murdered, 173 wounded. Congress anf LBJ tried to cover it all up.

Israel enjoys US representation without US taxation, the US does not have a reciprocal relationship with the Israeli Knesset.

American evangelicals, the GOP’s base, love Israel because they believe that the State of Israel is prophecied in Holy Scripture and that it signals the beginning of the “end times”. Besides, Israel makes a convenient dumping grounds for the Diaspora, few Christians would prefer that the Diaspora settle in the USA, as their next-door neighbors. It’s the old, “Jews, go home!” phenomenon that Zionism’s founder, T. Herzl, recognized and counted upon.

Many closet antisemites support the state of Israel because they do not want the Jewish Diaspora to settle here in America. Some bigots support Israel becuase the Jewsish State is a huge concentration of Jews and thus they can be more easily annihilated in the future.

The military/industrial complex loves Israel because it is a reliable end-user of US military hardware - government subsidized and always in need of more weaponry.

Nobody dares to question the lop-sided US/Israeli nexus out of fear of being branded an antisemite.

Poster 119, BushrulesoverLevin, did a cut/paste on my quote, without comments of his/her own. Hard to say if he/she agrees with me or not… I’m flattered by the attention, and I hope that my comments will, in some small way, cause influential Americans to re-evaluate the problematic US/Israeli relationship.

What’s good for the Jewish State is not always good for the USA. It’s time for American voters to grasp that fundamental truth.

The White House Report on Iraq, which will be read to Congress by Gen. BetrayUs on Sept 11th:

“9/11, 9/11…terrorism…9/11… The Surge is succeeding. 9/11, 9/11. But we need more time, more money, and more troops. 9/11… terrorism… 9/11…9/11… Bush says everything is going fine. 9/11.”

  131. Randolph Phillips Says:

I agree with the drift of this conversation, that it will be a call for patience and continuation of the surge: that was as predictable as sunrise. They are playing for time, since there is no intention of the troops leaving Iraq any year soon.

The Democrats have really bought the Bush policy of an endless stay, with a puppet Iraqi Government, like South Korea, which will never ask us to leave and from which the U.S will “rule” the middle east. They are merely talking trash otherwise to bash republicans politically.

If the Democrats were serious about the U.S. not staying forever, they would stop spending billions on the largest embassy in the world in Baghdad (under construction now to headquarter the U.S. middle east policy). Instead, construction continues.

When it comes to world domination , the Democrats now wear Republican combat boots.

#61. RUanidiot still thinks we are there for the oil. Nice sound bite from the loony left. I suppose we should still be in Kuwait then too? I thought the first Gulf War was all about the oil………be a man and try to let that stupid comment fly on a moderate website.

Comment by Partisanship is Dead - Eric

    response:
one of the political benchmarks outlined by the WH was an OIL REVENUE BILL; and the WH supports privatization of much of the oil production.

Each of the warring factions of Iraqis are fighting for their own variegated reasons - but one of those reasons is universal for all of the parties - the Oil wealth. how could they not be fighting for that wealth? that’s where the vast majority of the country’s revenue is generated. If you counted the gross value of all natural resources in Iraq, you’d find oil making up a majority of that wealth, with water in a distant second.

so we are there, directly or indirectly, over oil. not solely for our own oil greed, but also to keep other people from fighting over same; and, if the WH is to be believed, to equitably distribute the revenue among Iraqis and privatize its production/distribution for the sake of free trade and supplying the world markets…

and we aren’t in kuwait any more b/c they are our friends and the 1st gulf war was handled much better.

i’m sure people who are left of me (i’m a moderate with liberal more than conservative leanings - was raised by catholic conservs) will point out that it’s American oil corps that will be getting the oil lucrative contracts, and American corporations who are getting all sorts of other lucrative contracts for reconstruction &c.

anyway, RUanidiot is smart enough to know that money pays for wars, and oil is money. i guess that you still think we are there for WMD and to stop 9/11 terrorists. or is it that we’re just there to fix what Bush broke? or temporarily keep it from getting much much worse?

it occurs to me that you probably would not be able to offer any reason for our being there that would reflect well upon our current administration; the best you can do is show that the administration sticks to a cause and pays for its mistakes; but the magnitude of the mistakes that have been made will pale any praises you can sing.

I posted some time ago that September 11th would be the day Gen. Petraeous would report to Congress. That was, however, a pretty safe prediction given Bush’s constant harping that Iraq was linked to 9/11.

  135. American Says:

All you people are nuts. There is always a phantom hiding under a rock with you guys. All of our politicians are also nuts, both sides. In my 60 years I have learned never to trust any of them. They all have personal motives, and if you think that anyone in the Democratic Party or the Republican Party or any other Party for that matter care about anything but their own personal ambition you are living a dream.

  136. Turkey Trotsky Says:

Since our nominally Christian leaders believes they should recognize the Holiday, I would suggest we all request they truly honor the spirit and intent of it.

I believe we should urge the members of Congress and this administration, in the spirit of ecumenical brotherhood, to participate in Asseret Yemei Teshuva - The Ten Days of Repentance, starting at sunset on September 12. Ten days of self examination and repentance, in preparation for atonement for sins against G*d and their fellow man on Yom Kippur.

So George , when you give your report on the 15th, remember that some of us believe this is the time of year that God reviews and judges our actions. Based on your last few years…make that last few decades….you better hope we are wrong.
