A study by the Project for Excellence in Journalism finds that right-wing radio hosts helped kill comprehensive immigration reform by repeatedly referring to it as an “amnesty bill.” “If media attention translates into political pressure, the argument that talk radio helped kill the immigration bill in Congress has some support in the data,” the study says. “Thanks to energetic opposition from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Michael Savage, immigration was the biggest topic, at 16%, on conservative talk radio in the second quarter.”

This is also statistically representative of a high percentage of gullible morons in our society.

August 20th, 2007 at 10:25 pmDuh! TP proves how far behind the curve progtards are by only coming to this realization now! Obviously it was talk-radio–only portion of the media not controlled by anti-American lib-vermin–that heroically killed the SHAMNESTY bill being hawked by leading Demoncrats like Reid/Pelosi and Bush (in one of his only mistakes as prez). However, clarification is in order because it wasn’t just the good folks who listen to talk radio who killed the bill: it was actually a broad movement of Americans across the political spectrum who rejected the bill. This bill was so full of amnesty that only progtarded/libtarded traitors could defend it. The bill would’ve let illegals stay and continue to send remittances back home; do nothing to meaningfully tighten border security; not penalize illegals for their violations; and even encourage more of those scum to come in via the guest worker program. Kudos to conservatives like Savage, Hannity and Limbaugh for killing this bill.

Ot. I heard that many “illegal” Mexican construction workers are heading back to Mexico now that the light construction boom has all but ended. Plenty of cash to build their own homes/lives in Mexico.
August 20th, 2007 at 11:14 pmI was a Green Party candidate for Congress in 2006; I am certainly a progressive.
I opposed this so-called ‘immigration reform’ legislation … and the rightwing radio talkers had nothing to do with my position. Kennedy-McCain was a pro-transnational corporation, cheap labor bill … endorsed by Bush and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the proposal was a dagger aimed at the economic heart of working class Americans.
Think Progress (and many liberals) are on the wrong side of this issue … working Americans need to be protected from lower wages and benefits — allowing almost unlimited, immigrant labor into the country is not the way to do that.
August 20th, 2007 at 11:15 pmReally, Dave, you are Green? I don’t hear ANYBODY but righties suggesting the Dems want unlimited immigrants. Just saying.

August 20th, 2007 at 11:36 pmThe immigration talk has been around for what ….20 years? It seems to only remain talk, angry conversations and then talk again…. a method of getting the masses distracted at given times?
Solutions to this:
1. eliminate instant citizenship to those born on US soil from the undocumented
2. Seriously go after employers that hire the undocumented.
Before the Reagan years there was enforcement on hiring only US citizens… immigration was not a problem as it is now.

You should have read my earlier post. Not all conservatives are racist. This is about breaking the law, and illegal immigrants are unfairly getting an advantage compared to the latinos who worked hard to immigrate legally, who often praise Savage for his opposition to amnesty (Savage is in favor of legal immigration). If you listen to Savage he is sarcastic and satirical, which can be misunderstood. He is critical of affirmative action but he often says that it is not helping the black community because the problems are with the lack of fathers in the home-a problem that he wants to help fix through church programs and marriage tax incentives. He is critical of gays in a religious context but he will give free gifts to conservative gays who call in his show. He is a biologist and epidemiologist so he often tells scientific stories about his research in Fiji and the pacific. You should all listen to a few shows–it is much better than the bushbots rush and hannity and you will get a different perspective from just liberal blogs (i listen to ed schultz too, as a conservative independent).
August 21st, 2007 at 4:10 amHate and lies are all the republicans have. It’s all they’ve ever had.
Immigrants are the new boogyman for the next election.
Every other topic has already been spun to ruin and nobody believes anything a republican says now.
Michael Weener is still a racist fool and so is anybody that thinks deporting millions of people is a good idea. It destroys lives, families and communities and will cost a fortune, forever.
Sure sounds like a republican plan, eh.
August 21st, 2007 at 5:46 amIn the end, the illegals get their “amnesty” anyway, George Bush gets another kick to the nuts, and America gets to see that the GOP have NOTHING to offer America but a small legion of dullards who worship troubled chemical dependents like Limbaugh.
August 21st, 2007 at 6:27 amRegardless of Talk radio’s influence, the spineless GOP sat on their hands for 6 years because they didn’t want their Dear Leader signing a bill that Sen. Kennedy sponsored. So talk radio killed it? Hardly, the spineless GOP did nothing and let the Democrats have at it and then when it came time to draft the bill allll of a sudden their constituncies had major problems with the bill, even thought those problems could have been addresssed FOR 6YEARS, and it had to be defeated. Conservatives are just whiners, they’re balless and the lack of Socical Security and immigration reform bills that they had the votes for while they were in power proves my point.
August 21st, 2007 at 7:52 amThis was win-win for the Repubs. This was a game. Righty radio killed reform for Bush. They still have their secondary working class without voter rights.
August 21st, 2007 at 8:13 amHurricane Dean’s eye came ashore in the Yucation a few hours ago. At landfall Dean had sustained winds of 165 mph with gusts over 200 mph. 25 miles of the coastline has been wiped out. Damage to the area and about 25+ miles inland is catastrophic.

August 21st, 2007 at 9:39 amThe bill was killed because the majority of Americans were against it.
Build a fence first, then we can decide what to do with those people who are already here…..after the fence is built.
August 21st, 2007 at 11:12 amThe two blow hards that started most of this debate we’re the clowns on KFI-640 in Los Angeles. John and Ken.
These are two have turned illegal imigration into a multi-million dollar business (for them) in Southern California where the issue hits hard.
All of the guys are totally disengenuous to be kind.
It’s all show folks.
August 21st, 2007 at 11:12 amGood for Right Wing radio. Only good thing it’s ever done: look out for the sanctity of American borders AND law.
August 21st, 2007 at 12:14 pmSounds like Rush and Co finally did something right. The bill was a bad one and it should not have passed.
