Last night on the Charlie Rose show, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — who proclaims himself to be “the greatest critic” of the past four years of the Iraq war — said, “I predicted that we would fail when I saw the Rumsfeld strategy that was being employed. And I railed and spoke against it and did everything I could to change it.” (Some examples of his “railings” here.) Asked if there was a moment in time where he could envision himself supporting a withdrawal, McCain said, “I think in the months ahead — plural — that you will see continued progress on the military side and I think that can be encouraging for us to have a strategy where…we gradually withdraw.” Watch it:
The McCrazy train has arrived.
Ozzy should do a remake of that song.

August 21st, 2007 at 7:30 pm“Can you clear this away for us?”
“We’d like to hang out for awhile and discuss some business….”
And needless to say, Charlie Rose doesn’t call McCain on his obvious dissembling. My disgust meter with Rose shattered when he had Henry Kissinger, America’s greatest living (so far) war criminal, in terms of the numbers of people he helped kill, on his show so Rose could grill him on Kissinger’s love of soccer. It was amazing that you could hear Kissinger’s flattened affect over the sound of Rose’s sucking up. That’s journamalism of the most Republican kind.
August 21st, 2007 at 7:32 pmMcCain, despite his MSM handlers, is sunk. Rose, unfortunately, will suck up to war criminals for years to come.
What an unbelievable tool. Does he think we’re all as senile as him? Does he think we don’t remember the immense cheerleading he did for this war? If he thought the ‘Rumsfeld strategy’ would fail, why did he support it for so long and continue to throw troops and treasure at it? What an A-Class A$$.
August 21st, 2007 at 7:33 pmHe did disagree to an extent. He didn’t think the Shock was shocking enough and the Awe wasn’t nearly as awesome as McCain wanted it to be.
August 21st, 2007 at 7:34 pmWhy does John McCain hate John McCain?

Well, if he’s a critic, why isn’t he calling for a withdrawal. This man will say absolutely anything in an attempt to be elected as our President. Fortunately no one is listening to him any longer.

August 21st, 2007 at 8:23 pmSen. John McCain strolled briefly through an open-air market in Baghdad today in an effort to prove that Americans are “not getting the full picture†of what’s going on in Iraq.
NBC’s Nightly News provided further details about McCain’s one-hour guided tour. He was accompanied by “100 American soldiers, with three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead.†Still photographs provided by the military to NBC News seemed to show McCain wearing a bulletproof vest during his visit.
McCain recently claimed that there “are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today.†In a press conference after his Baghdad tour, McCain told a reporter that his visit to the market today was proof that you could indeed “walk freely†in some areas of Baghdad.
Does that sound like a critic who predicted the policy’s failure, or a chief cheerleader?
John McCain can’t even tell plausible lies, he’s lost all credibility, and he’s quickly causing people to lose all respect for him.

Hush. What do you see?
August 21st, 2007 at 9:21 pmAh, the first signs of Alzhiemer’s is setting in on Mr. McCain. But dont worry the so-called “liberal” media (who is that BTW) will refuse to make anything of it and continue to report on this “Maverick” politician super hero John McCain.
Now I respect Mr. McCain’s military service period, and those of us who have served know that you dont have to respect the man, but you will repsect the rank, and that’s about as far or as much respect he gets from me. Here is a man that had greatness before him and he threw it away (along with his dignity, although he did that long before 2000) to try to appeal to the CON-servant-ives, not REAL ones, the ones who are trying to ruin this country.
Sometimes there is no defending a person when they’re wrong, and the fact that I dont remember ONE TIME hearing Mr. McCain object to the utter incompetence of MR Donald “stuff happens” Rumsfeld during the war, and the fact that he didn’t call for his resignation after Mr. Donald “you go to war with the Army you have” Rumsfeld failed to acknowledge his failures for the war.
The fact is Mr. McCain is feeling something he hasn’t felt in a long time, his conscience is catching up to him, and for many others the ghost of OIF past will be haunting them for the rest of their lives and I think that’s about time.
And for all the rest of the Armageddonist, I can’t wait for all of you to have your “ckicken comes hme to roost” moments, because there will be nothing you can do about it.

August 21st, 2007 at 10:13 pmMr don of rum is a guns and bomb salesman.
He was very successful in using the maximum amount of expensive munitions and equipment to do the absolutely uncalled for.
In his business he is very successful. He gets bonus points.
He works for the military industry, not the people.
Don’t confuse the two.
His job was to require huge amounts of military spending where none was needed.
In his board room he is king.
He even made all this spending possible with no end.Like an open ended contract with the suppliers.
You know all the military suppliers are giving don of rum whatever he wants whenever he wants.
He is bringing in the big big bucks for them right now and as far as anyone can see.
All this for something that could have been done with a simple arrest.
But then pretend vp man would not have been able to supply and rebuild for the other side of the deal.
We do things very well, though. Just one at a time.

August 21st, 2007 at 11:02 pmI also made the rice dish I can’t spell – rissoto? risotto?
Anyway, asparagus and parm rice dish I can’t spell..!
It was pretty good.
August 21st, 2007 at 11:05 pmI figure I’m good for another couple of days.
gummitch – I drove by a public house on my way here – I saved room for a pint of Newcastle……
Not Worzel Gummitch by any chance?
August 21st, 2007 at 11:05 pmMm true – if you ever see a gravestone with the following on it you’ll know it was me:
“It was the cheese that did it”
or
“I told you I was ill!”
Not sure which yet.
August 21st, 2007 at 11:07 pmMcCain: Yet another shameless liar, who first lies and then lies about having lied.
He is the ideal presidential candidate for conservative visitors at ThinkProgress, who have no use for facts.
August 21st, 2007 at 11:08 pmThose epitaphs are d#mned funny.
I like ‘em both… but you better not be making those plans any time soon.

Turtle could combine them — “I told you the cheese was making me ill!”
August 21st, 2007 at 11:25 pmI saw him on John Stewart’s show the other night telling one lie after another as if no one could ever do a fact check.
The sad truth is no one cares at this point. He is like your drunk crazy great uncle that comes over and everyone just puts up with, yet you don’t want your children to get to close as he could frighten theim.
Express my ass.

Think so? -Lucifer
I tried to be nice. Oh well.
August 21st, 2007 at 11:44 pmWhere is he coming from? Doesn’t anyone in the MSM ask? They are all looney. Has anyone tested the water in DC?
August 21st, 2007 at 11:47 pmI tried. Burn em.
August 21st, 2007 at 11:48 pmHe actually used to be a critic of Rummie’s policies in Iraq. Then the 2004 election rolled around, and he buried himself in Bush’s lap and hasn’t stopped working it since.
August 21st, 2007 at 11:51 pmNo plans at this stage, true.
Zoo – hmm combining them makes it look like I’m being force-fed the cheese…..as if…
August 22nd, 2007 at 12:28 amPoor Senator McCain.
Constantly trying to make himself significant; the Oracle of Delphi; the sponsor of “I bought five rugs for five bucks.”
Seantor, give it up. I lost all respect for you in 2004 when you backed and kissed the a$$ of the Chimp after he trashed you and your family in 2000.
Move out of the way; we’ve got Rudi “I am a 9/11 hero” to fry next.
August 22nd, 2007 at 2:12 amFact is McCain was one of the most outspoken proponents of this war until his poll numbers fell and fundraising plummeted. He was one of Rumsfeld’s biggest cheerleaders. Because the surge is failing he is doing everything he can to back down from his support of the surge to increase his poll numbers.
August 22nd, 2007 at 3:39 amBush will invoke Vietnam
August 22nd, 2007 at 5:04 amMcCain your full of the brown stuff
August 22nd, 2007 at 5:16 amTalks out of his ass.
August 22nd, 2007 at 9:08 amWhoa there McCain. Maybe your new bus should be called the Alzheimer’s Express. Either you’re nuts and don’t remember the things you’ve said or you think we’re nuts and don’t remember all the things you’ve said. Either way, you sure don’t still have they gray matter to be president. Kinda like you’re pal in residence now.
August 22nd, 2007 at 9:22 amMcCain HAS criticized the war — but his criticism has always been along the lines of “we need to send MORE troops, and we need to drop MORE bombs”. But he has always voted the way Bush and Cheney wanted him to.
However, calling himself “the greatest critic” is pure fantasy. Kucinich has criticized the war more than he has. Heck, even Hillary Clinton has criticized the war more than McCain.
August 22nd, 2007 at 10:23 amDuring the 2004 Presidential, Senator John McCain did not say a jot when John Kerry got swiftboated but yet came out, furiuosly demanding Kerry apologise to Bush on one of the rare ocassions Kerry fought back.
I for one, am tickled pink that the honourable senior senator from the fine state of AZ’s campaign is now status: Exit Backstage Door South
