After Only 10 Hours In Iraq, Sens. Corker And Alexander See ‘Clear Success’»

corkeralexander.jpgReturning from a trip to Iraq, Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Bob Corker (R-TN) “gave an upbeat report on progress in Iraq” to reporters this morning, saying they saw “clear success, province by province“:

Alexander said a strategy devised by Petraeus to work with local leaders and win them over to the U.S. cause has shown “clear success, province by province.”

“They are fed up with random murders of their children” by al-Qaida terrorists, he said.

“There are probably seven provinces where enough progress has been made to involve Iraqis in their own security,” claimed Alexander during the call with reporters.

Unmentioned in press accounts of Alexander and Corker’s trip, however, is the fact that they only spent half a day on the ground in Iraq.

Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH), who organized the trip (which also included Sen. David Vitter), told reporters that only 10-14 hours out of their four-day trip was spent in Iraq. Voinovich’s communications director, Chris Paulitz, confirmed the duration of the delegation’s trip to ThinkProgress.

Despite the superficial, in and out nature of their trip, Corker and Alexander are pronouncing “significant progress” on the ground in Iraq. As former Washington Post Baghdad correspondent Jonathan Finer wrote this weekend, “there is good reason to be skeptical of such snapshot accounts“:

It goes without saying that everyone can, and in this country should, have an opinion about the war, no matter how much time the person has spent in Iraq, if any. But having left a year ago, I’ve stopped pretending to those who ask that I have a keen sense of what it’s like on the ground today. Similarly, those who pass quickly through the war zone should stop ascribing their epiphanies to what are largely ceremonial visits.

While politicians who spend a few hours in the “dog-and-pony show are claiming “significant progress,” soldiers who have been on the ground for 15 months are seeing a very different picture: “mounting civil, political and social unrest.”

That’s what you have left of the August “Summer District Work Period” - realistically our last local opportunity to push for impeachment while ‘our Representatives’ are home.

  10. Vietnamwillhappenagainiflibshavetheirway Says:

Corker and Alexander are intellectually honest and they are patriots who want to see Iraq succeed; that’s why they honestly report on what they’ve seen and refuse to infect their perception with ideology. The problem with progtards and libs is they are so much against the plausible and realistic scenario of US progress that they slander everyone who reports on positive stuff happening in Iraq. It’s clear that Corker and Alexander are telling the truth about Iraq’s continued progress because their testimonies have been verified by even left-wing screwballs who’ve returned from Iraq. In the past few weeks, leftard Michael O’Hanlon and Sen. Carl Levin both returned from Iraq and had to shamefully admit that progress, militarily, was occurring. The mentally ill progtards argument now is that everyone–even their own libtards like Levin and O’Hanlon–is lying and that there’s no progress in Iraq. Clearly, libs want the US to lose so they spread gloomy propaganda.

Why can’t 250,000 well armed well equipped and overly trained (come on 4 years?) men, handle simple policing of their own towns and cities?

If thats what a republican calls a success, then I’d hate to see what they call a failure.

So now they are trying to say that al-Qaida are killing Iraqi’s. I thought that al-Qaida were killing Americans. I sincerely doubt that the Iraqi’s would tolerate al-Qaida in their country if they were killing Iraqi’s. The only reason why they tolerate them at all is because they are killing Americans.

I vote for “if we leave Iraq the aliens will take them over”. I like that one.

  55. NoOneYouKnow Says:

Actually, Iraqis are killing al-Qaeda. The AQ guys bomb indiscriminately and they’re quick on the trigger with anyone who disagrees with them or gets in their way. We cant prove that alqaeda isnt in Iraq, because they are in Iraq.

Okay this is good. Explain more… please.

  98. YankeeClipper Says:

It’s deja vu all over again; William C. Westmoreland’s famous quote, “there’s light at the end of the tunnel.” And to think, just today our dear leader was comparing Vietnam with Iraq.

I respectfully ask, again, please provide evidence.

Why do trolls “cut and run” from respectful questions?

  101. oldtree Says:

this is good press for anyone that wants to recall them or run against. you can demonstrate senility, complicity, idiocy. but when you get them taking it to the teevee, they are proving unfit even to do the job now.
it is extortion folks. what the hell do you think the domestic spying is about? what other reason could allow the most criminal regime in our history to maintain their choke hold on congress and their own soon to be retired tools?

  102. pete Says:

This is, a bit, off topic but; Are George H.W. Bush’s calls to Saudi Arabia being intercepted?

Because they can’t debate, as they have no facts. And to be honest we don’t hear much of what’s really going on, other than lots of death.

But knowing the history of the Middle East helps, and even though I’ve learned more in the last few years than my previous 35 or so. I can take a guess at what’s happening.

America is stuck in the middle of not just a 2 sided shia, sunni war, but a multi sided war of smaller sects fighting for power. Bullets are flying in all directions, and we’re directing traffic at road side check points, and useless patrols getting caught in the cross fire, as well as intentionally targeted.

Iraq is a total mess, and those who might be able to help, like other middle east nations, we’re not allowing to help, and even threatening Iran because they know their oil will not last forever, so they’re trying to
build nuclear energy, and maybe even nuclear weapons because they know as the oil becomes more valuable, that might be their only protection from any country greedy enough to invade.

  104. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Did the visit remind them of Memphis TN?

  105. NeoCONS 'R' SCUM Says:

Hummmph. Wonder if the ‘gentleman from Louisiana’ checked out the local

    ‘talent’.
    -
these CONTURD and REPUBLI-SCUM charlatans are getting pretty
    desperate.

    Unfortunately, P.T. Barnum was right.

  106. W.Clements Says:

Amazing that these GOP Congressional lackeys are just so damn eager to jump on the Iraq propaganda wagon in support of their illustrious President. Are they really that stupid?

It’s ludicrous and shameful to think that they can go to Iraq for 10 hours and get an accurate assessment of things there. Their real intentions are pathetically transparent.

    Bozos.

  107. Free RePubic Readers have sex with their mothers Says:

    http://www.cnn.com/ 2007/ WORLD/ meast/ 08/ 22/ iraq.democracy/
” But for the first time, exasperated front-line U.S. generals talk openly of non-democratic governmental alternatives, and while the two top U.S. officials in Iraq still talk about preserving the country’s nascent democratic institutions, they say their ambitions aren’t as “lofty” as they once had been. “Democratic institutions are not necessarily the way ahead in the long-term future,” said Brig. Gen. John “Mick” Bednarek, part of Task Force Lightning in Diyala province, one of the war’s major battlegrounds.”

  108. Perry Logan Says:

Well, if two fat pedophiles say it’s a success, it’s a success!

  109. Cricket Says:

There’s an old addage that if you can’t dazzle them with your brilliance you baffle them with your bull shit. They are good at the latter. I just hope the other 26% of their ilk that enjoys things that go ’round ‘n ’round will pay attention, ’cause the rest of us won’t.

    CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?

  110. gogogeo Says:

I once spent over 10 hours in jail, and I can assure you there is no rape there. I think we can safely say, “it’s not as bad as it’s been made out”. Let’s send some of these Neo’s there for a taste…

  111. tpagy Says:

Well Well to all that think us libs are cutting and running should ask Sen Warner who’s just came back and now it calling for some troops to come home by Xmas

  112. Probus Says:

The republicans failure to admit that the Bush surge has failed is costing us American and Iraqi lives everyday. It has also hurt our credibility around the world and our moral authority as a world leader. Spending a few hours in the green zone and making untrue proclamations of success only hurts the GOP. The American people can see the reality. The surge has not worked.

  113. Rich Miles Says:

In all the fun ‘n games on this thread, we may have missed a really interesting and quite plausible explanation for all the Rethug “happy talk”.

    See comment #52 by Corsair.

Add that to “waiting for the oil bill in Iraq to be signed” and “the headlong, hurtling approach of the Rethug Armageddon also known as the 2008 elections“, and I think we might be on to something here.

    Waddaya think?

  114. Chimpy McFlightsuit Says:

I live in TN,and I can tell you that these two Bushpuppies don’t spend much time here, either.Iraq will recover from Bush’s”legacy”long before we will.God help us…

  115. Larry Says:

Why did those Senators spend only 10 hours total in Iraq? Did they go there with the idea to spend only 10 hours, or was the fact that mortars flying into the Green Zone dissuaded them from spending several days, inspecting the Iraqi Army, talking to American soldiers off the record. The American army has now shortened its training time to several (?) months - is 4 years enough for the Iraqi army, probably many of whom spent time in the Iraq army prior to our invasion.
    Larry

  116. Large Marge Says:

ALL republicans are chicken-hawks or “chicken-shits” , liars and theives. Every damn one of them. Including you republican trolls reading this. Ha-Ha! Yes it is time we tell everyone that if you vote republican you are a lieing theiving chicken-shit a**hole.
