Hatch voices support for mining official Stickler.»

“Richard Stickler is a very competent MSHA official. He has done his best to see that the job is done right. He cares greatly about these miners,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT). But many experts have questioned why Stickler allowed “anyone, including rescuers, into the still-dangerous” Crandall Canyon mine. Stickler is a former coal official whom the Senate had twice rejected because the mines he managed “incurred injury rates double the national average.”

UPDATE: Zappatero at SquareState has more.

Orrin Hatch spent his meager moral authority long, long ago.

    That ain’t sayin’ much.

More cronyism = more death and destruction. Recess appointments?

“You’re doing a heckuva job, Richie.”

He was a great choice for MSHA . . . that is, if you want a fox to guard the chicken coop.

  5. toasterhead Says:

Note that he was rejected twice by the Republican-led Senate before his recess appointment. Even conservatives thought the guy was bad.

Vicki Strong lost her son Marine Sgt. Jesse Strong, in Iraq fighting for our freedom. Listen to why Vicki believes Victory is America’s only choice.

    Take your propaganda somewhere else.

  9. RUCerious Says:

Uhh, Harold, you’re on the wrong thread.

and he wasn’t fighting for my freedom. He was fighting to secure Iraqi oil for Exxon.

  10. Menehune Says:

I love how the mine is deemed safe enough that they want to resume mining, but not safe enough to continue searching for the trapped miners. That sure raised some eyebrows out in Utah.

  11. Menehune Says:

#6…OK, can we declare victory and come home, then?

  12. Raven Says:

Perhaps Orrin got a call last night from his owner.

  13. dlet Says:

Republicans (as they are now) are incapable of running the government effectively, efficiently or safely. Period. Everything they have been in control of that is important has degraded to the point of uselessness. Katrina response, mine response, war, justice, human rights, etc. I would like to use the analogy of “kids in a cnady shop” but that doesn’t capture the seriousness of the situation.

I’d guess there are parts of the mine considered to be safe, where they can keep up working, while other parts of the mine, where the trapped miners are, can still collapse and hurt or kill the rescuers (as it happened once already).

I am truly sorry for the loss of this woman’s son. She is misguided.

Shame on you for taking advantage of her fear and grief.

  16. W.Clements Says:

Very competent? And that’s why he was twice rejected by the Senate before Bush’s recess appointment?

It all adds up, doesn’t it?

Hatch is a Republican lackey with zero credibility.

  17. Menehune Says:

#13. I would think the entire mine would be under the same stress and seismic pressure that created the multiple “bumps” that have already killed 9 people in all likelihood. I think the same huge mountain is sitting on top of the whole complex.

  18. SW Bob Says:

Of course, Hatch thinks bushco is competent too.

“Seismic pressure?” The mine is what’s causing the “seismic pressure.”

  21. Davis Didjeridu Says:

#7 oldtree: We were trying to win an election last year against him, but the netroots like you completely ignored that while going on your losing quest to beat Lieberman. You could have helped defeat Hatch and elect Pete Ashdown, a tech-savvy, ISP owner, who would have represented Utah. Guess it was more important to have one more Republican in office with another independent instead of helping a Democrat get elected.

  22. Texas by Midnight Says:

“Richard Stickler is a very competent MSHA official. He has done his best to see that the job is done right. He cares greatly about these miners,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch.”

Why do we, the citizens of the United States, have to accept the continuing use of the words coming from the Republican: “He has done his best” when we all know that “Better” is the only degree to which we can accept. The best any and all of the Bush Administration appointees and the president and vice president can do is to “All Resign.”

  23. footsore Says:

I would like to know if Senator Hatch was one of those rpublican senators who rejected Stickler or a campaign beneficary of the coal industry?

    Harold,

Do you actually still believe that Iraq and 9/11 are linked??? They should have done a better job of scripting that ad.

I am sorry for her loss but find the message disingenuous and inaccurate Pro-BushCo NeoCon propaganda.

Jesse was a Republican tool, and, like Tillman, gave his life for nothing. It’s a shame his mother learned nothing from his death.

Important observation, Toasterhead. Two REPUBLICAN senates.

Being familiar with federal resource agencies and how they operate in the West, I can safely say that anyone endorsed or supported by Orrin Hatch is generally not operating in the best interests of the citizens of this country.

  32. Down with Righty Whitey Says:

Davis Didjeridu has a point as well. Given the fringe of Hatch’s positions and the changing demographic of the southwest he should have been easy pickings. Mormons can’t like misguided wars THAT much, can they?

Yes, which is why we need to stop taking the bait. We have to stop letting them derail threads about important issues with drive-by trolling.

  37. Jay Randal Says:

Hatch is a pimp for the coal mining companies, so he is compromised about claiming Stickler as a good person.

  38. Jackie Says:

Hatch is not speaking up because of the millions of dollars Stickler gave to the Republican party in both elections. Look Stickler knew if he gave to the Republicans he would get brakes and make more money. He could have used that money to make the mines safer but he chose to give it to the Republicans for favors. Hatch has to stick up for him because were talking about double figure millions given.
Look the bridge that collapsed could have been repaired but the money was used else where not for the safety of the people. No worries the bridge that the US built in Afghanistan is really good and safe as we paid billions to make sure the job was done right.

  39. WaltinTexas Says:

Just another example of a morally bankrupt Repuke that considers profits for people like Murray and Stickler more important than anything else.

  40. Diana Manwaring Says:

Vicki Strong’s remarks in Freedom Watch’s propaganda ads are insulting. I have an aunt who lost three friends in the World Trade Center on 9/11, and to link this stinking war to that tragedy is an already-revealed bold faced lie!!! And, I’ve got several cousins serving in Iraq and I want them all to return home ALIVE, not in a pine box!

These ads will not change one fact: The American people are tired of the Bush Administration and we are tired of this war, and ads such as the ones that Freedom Watch are putting out won’t change how we feel. In fact, they will make people like me all the more determined to vote out of office whoever insists on keeping our troops in harm’s way. I feel awful about Ms. Strong losing her son over there, but she doesn’t speak for me or the many other military relatives who are worried sick about our loved ones.
