Historian: Bush’s ‘distortion’ of Vietnam ‘boggles my mind.’

In his speech to Veterans of Foreign Wars today, President Bush declared that the lesson of Vietnam is that we must not withdraw from Iraq. UCLA historian Robert Dallek, who has written about the comparisons of Iraq to Vietnam, says Bush is “twisting history” with his new analogy:

“It just boggles my mind, the distortions I feel are perpetrated here by the president,” he said in a telephone interview.

“We were in Vietnam for 10 years. We dropped more bombs on Vietnam than we did in all of World War II in every theater. We lost 58,700 American lives, the second-greatest loss of lives in a foreign conflict. And we couldn’t work our will,” he said.

“What is Bush suggesting? That we didn’t fight hard enough, stay long enough? That’s nonsense. It’s a distortion,” he continued. “We’ve been in Iraq longer than we fought in World War II. It’s a disaster, and this is a political attempt to lay the blame for the disaster on his opponents. But the disaster is the consequence of going in, not getting out.”

Just when you thought all the \"we lost the will to win in Vietnam\" delusionals were safely in their dust bins, Bush hauls them out, and asks for advice on his next speech.

Bush is running out of ways to stay politically relevant until he leaves office. To many, he's past that point. Now he looks just desperate.

Next week we take on the Mullahs for the title. Go Team!

  22. TerrytheTurtle Says:

I have a thesis to posit: that the Iraq War is in fact an extension of the Vietnam War. The United States has never come to terms with the Vietnam War and same as the German Army in WWI has blamed the loss on a "stab in the back" from the "libruls" at home.

Iraq 2003 is an attempt to exact revenge on the "libruls" for Vietnam....

  23. Abby Says:

  33. Angry One Says:

If the President's misuse of the lessons of Vietnam sounds familiar, it should. After all, just last week 2008 Republican White House frontrunner Rudy Giuliani said virtually the same thing.

"America must remember one of the lessons of the Vietnam War. Then, as now, we fought a war with the wrong strategy for several years. And then, as now, we corrected course and began to show real progress. Many historians today believe that by about 1972 we and our South Vietnamese partners had succeeded in defeating the Vietcong insurgency and in setting South Vietnam on a path to political self-sufficiency. But America then withdrew its support, allowing the communist North to conquer the South...The consequences of abandoning Iraq would be worse."

Who am I? I'm the fellow who doesn't give a damn about what Dallek has to say. Dallek is a mere college historian from UCLA. He's not anything more, nor anything less.

To me, Dallek's opinion means less than President Bush's opinion means to you.

  52. RobertDallekisideologicalandundereducated Says:

This "historian" (read: ideologue masquerading as a professor) is nothing but a partisan and fanatical ideologue; he also proves that many in academia lean shamelessly to the leftarded side. He failed to disprove Bush's Iraq-Vietnam comparison. Like the scores of intellectual cowards and debate-impaired progtards here, the "historian" failed to challenge and thus disprove Bush based on Bush's arguments. Instead, this sheeple-zombie of a historian just unimaginatively regurgitated leftarded talking points where he demonized Bush. This "historian" is such a chronic imbecile that even I can teach him a lesson about how Bush's Iraq-Vietnam comparison is apt. Bush is right because: when the US withdrew in Vietnam, many innocent civilians were massacred; the same will happen in Iraq if the US pulls out prematurely. In Vietnam, the pullout was instigated by traitor politicians and the lib media; in Iraq, the same is about to occur.

  99. Chris L Says:

At least in Vietnam we had a clear defined enemy, the NVA. And a clear goal, prevent the NVA from overtaking South Vietnam. In Iraq we have no clear mission, enemy, goal or exit strategy. The Sunnis are the enemy because they supported Saddam, and Al Qaeda is Sunni. Also the majority of foreign fighters in Iraq are Sunni. Except we are arming Sunni militants and working to protect Sunni neighborhoods from Shia extremists. So the Shiites are the enemy, after all, most are being aided by Iran. Except that the Shia were the main people oppressed under Saddam, and the ones we went there to "free". So Sadr is a terrorist, but he is also an influential part of Iraq's government.

So essentially, our artillerymen and tank gunners can leave Iraq once they are a free democracy (their constitution declares them as an Islamic Theocracy, same as Iran), and once they have a good tax code.

He failed to disprove Bush’s Iraq-Vietnam comparison. Like the scores of intellectual cowards and debate-impaired progtards here, the “historian” failed to challenge and thus disprove Bush based on Bush’s arguments. Instead, this sheeple-zombie of a historian just unimaginatively regurgitated leftarded talking points where he demonized Bush. This “historian” is such a chronic imbecile that even I can teach him a lesson about how Bush’s Iraq-Vietnam comparison is apt. Bush is right because: when the US withdrew in Vietnam, many innocent civilians were massacred; the same will happen in Iraq if the US pulls out prematurely. In Vietnam, the pullout was instigated by traitor politicians and the lib media; in Iraq, the same is about to occur.

You've studied the same history as Bush, which is none. Conservatives always get their heads handed to them, quite often literally. Liberals founded this country by defying the most powerful empire in the world, and beat them handily, because conservatives are cowards and lack imagination. The French aristocracy lost their heads in a liberal uprising. Hitler, a conservative of the first order, lost. Throughout history, conservatives are beaten down again and again, and never learn to be civilized and human. They keep returning to the unevolved state of jungle ethos, like the savages and barbarians they have not quite descended from. Liberalism ultimately wins, despite the setbacks of the savage monsters spawned by conservative psychopathy. America is the perfect example of liberalism winning and changing the world in doing so. You have completely destroyed whatever credibility you imagined you had with that supremely asinine, stupid, unresearched, kneejerk, ignorant statement. If you had a wife and kids, they would have you committed.

  151. pete Says:

The trolls seem to be operating under the assumption that having "the most powerful military in the world" makes the U.S. immune. Well, let's explore what has happened to some of the most powerful forces in history; in no particular order.

    1: The Spanish Armada. Defeated
    2: Ancient Greece. Defeated
    3: Rome. Defeated
4: Various Asian empires. All defeated.
5: Nazi Germany. Defeated, dismantled and utterly destroyed.

Are you seeing a pattern? You see, when a Nation becomes a threat to enough other nations, said Nation finds itself fighting alone. And, what's more, when a Nation is hijacked by criminal leaders, the Nation often rises against them.

If the U.S. started "nuking" people it would result in our annihilation. Whether from within, or without, we would CEASE TO EXIST. Get it?

Nothing will guarantee indefinite longevity for a nation, but having the muscle to ward off one's enemies is certainly a viable form of insurance.

How do “progressives” expect to convince anyone that you’re informed and thinking clearly with arguments like these?

    Comment by blackball — August 22, 2007 @ 6:09 pm

We don't. You'd need to be able to think for yourselves to understand the logic and factual basis of our arguments, but if you could do that, you wouldn't be neandertal conservative reactionaries. But you show up here with your talking points, without a modicum of thought, intelligence or compassion behind them, so you get shelled. The fact that you're incapable of learning is your own damn fault. all of history is against you, all the world is against you, you comprise a small minority of Americans, but you think you're right. See, there's no hope.

We simply fight this battle against radical Islam in the same fashion they fight us. No quarter.

They killed their own in the World Trade Center without blinking an eye. Collateral damage meant nothing to them.

You think there were no Muslims in the World Trade Center or on those planes? Then you are absolutely nuts.

Radical Islam has no regard for it's own people, let alone for us. It's up to Islam to police their own. In the absense of that, we must take up the job. Another 9/11 cannot be allowed. If it means the end of Islam as they know it, so be it.

The trolls love TP because they know how influential they've been in changing the dialog about the war in Iraq. The majority of Americans want the troops home and trust Democrats with the security of this nation.

Sites like Thinking Progress, Crook and Liars, Media Matters, Daily Kos, to name just a few, have made a significant difference.

These trolls jump on to vent their anger at the progressives here in the comment section who chose to discuss the stories with other progressives. But they disrupt our conversations and when we call them on it - they say "take a chill pill". Or attack us.

The bottom line is, they're afraid. And they should be.

So are we to assume that bombing the Vatican (just a hypothetical bombing), or Jerusalem, would force the world's Christians to rethink their faith?

    No. Why would we?

Islam has 5 fundamental tenets, one of them is that ever Muslim has to make a pilgrimage to the kaaba. No kaaba = no Islam as we know it.

Ahaaaaaa - What an IDIOT. Because let's say, if someone blew up your church, you would just rethink your religion.
Perhaps those millions of Muslims you claim would need a pilgrimage to rethink, might want to visit you.

umm... you seem to be having trouble understanding something.

The Hajj is one of the essential duties of every Muslim. You are not a muslim if you do not complete these duties (5 tenets)

    Therefore,

No Kaaba = No Hajj = No Islam as we know it.

Here, read a crap wikipedia entry about the 5 pillars of Islam:

And how would nuking anyone make our troops jobs easier?

    Comment by pete — August 22, 2007 @ 10:11 pm"

First off, you presumption that our military is "bogged down in a pointless occupation" is wrong right from the start. We are not "bogged down" in anything. We are winning, and progress is being made every day.

The point was to get rid of a dangerous dictator who was developing and seeking WMD's. We did that. Mission Accomplished.

We could not leave Iraq in a leadership vacuum at that point. That would have invited mob rule, anarchy, another dangerous dictatorship, etc. We'd be back in 10-20 years to start over from the beginning. As an example, if "Jimmah" Carter had taken care of Iran when he had the opportunity, we wouldn't be having to deal with Iran's nonsense now.

Now we are attempting to help the Iraqi's build a democracy. A noble ideal, and a noble effort. Insurgents have flooded in from Iran, Pakistan, etc. Rival factions are fighting for control. Much as the gangs in our own cities fight for control. We could simply leave, and let them kill each other off, but once again, our noble ideals won't allow that. And once again, we cannot allow the leadership vacuum.

Now, on to how this all makes us safer: It's very simple. If we are fighting them, and they are killing each other off, over in their own sandbox, they simply cannot plan and organize as effectively as if they are left to their own devices, with all the time in the world to put together they're plans of destruction. If their leadership can be sought out and killed over there, they cannot come here.

We can not afford to give the Islamic Terrorists the freedom to be able to put together more 9/11's. The pressure must remain on them, not us. They must be on the defensive, we must be on the offensive. Their acts are not criminal, they are military. A court will do nothing but make for jailed heroes. Dead terrorists will be forgotten.

"Sites like Thinking Progress, Crook and Liars, Media Matters, Daily Kos, to name just a few, have made a significant difference.

These trolls jump on to vent their anger at the progressives here in the comment section who chose to discuss the stories with other progressives. But they disrupt our conversations and when we call them on it - they say “take a chill pill”. Or attack us.

The bottom line is, they’re afraid. And they should be.

    Comment by RagingGurrl — August 22, 2007 @ 10:16 pm"

No, the reason we are here is because you people are so full of yourselves you need a reality check once in a while.

Fact is, the majority have never heard of the lib blogs you list. The only reason Daily Kos is now more well known is because Bill O'Reilly took them on his national show and got some of their sponsors to wise up. The rest of them are "also rans".

I don't come here out of any anger at all, as you do. I come here for entertainment purposes mostly. I have fun reading the claptrap and kook liberal nonsense, and then I stir the pot just to see what outrageous stuff you nutroots will say next. If I can stir enough, maybe Bill O. will mention some of it on TV, that would be a hoot!

Either way, it's fun for me to stomp around once in a while. I know I am right, and I am completely comfortable with my beliefs. I grew out of my "liberal" phase in Junior High School, when I got a job and had to manage my own money and life. I couldn't afford to be a liberal anymore when I didn't have someone else's money to spend. And I certainly never had it in me to try to run someone else's life, so conservative I am.

  256. alp3 Says:

  257. RagingGurrl Says:

  259. pete Says:

Once again BigO (sorry, it won't let me post your full moniker) I ask a simple, two part, question.

Explain again please how keeping our military bogged down in a pointless (to put it kindly) occupation of a foreign country makes us safer. Perhaps I’m missing something?

And how would nuking anyone make our troops jobs easier?

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.

    Take a chill-pill and read a book.

  261. RagingGurrl Says:

    O. Bigfoot,

You admit to being here to disrupt, and that is an aggressive maneuver on your part. It is also destructive - you do nothing to build your position up, you exist only to tear other positions down to your level.
But that does not work here. You see, we all know what you're doing - it might be the kind of thing to do that is entertaining to you, and to Bill O'Reilly, your hero, to mislabel and misjudge people, to call them traitors, or members or the KKK to "stir things up" but that is a sickness that he has and for some reason, trolls have as well.

I have never had the desire to go to a conservative website to disrupt their conversation, it would be disrespectful and unproductive. Why waste my time? Your rants, and the rants of other trolls are so transparent and do nothing but strengthen our positions. And are you that delusional to think that you are an evangelist for the conservative cause here on TP? That all we need to do is hear your words and we too will be saved? I think you are, and you are not doing this to amuse yourself.

  262. RagingGurrl Says:

    Ooo AVGVSTVS,

There you go with your chill pill again. Go to Hot Air where they don't have any sense and won't challenge you. They like to talk about killing people there - you'll be far more comfortable chillin' with them, dude.

  263. O. Bigfoot Says:

Whatever you say, Gurrl...but I think you are really overanalyzing this thing...

I never said anything relating to disrupting things here. I said I am here to provide a reality check. You folks preaching to the choir give you a sense of power you really do not have. The same people, saying the same outrageous kook nonsense, unchecked, makes you all think you really mean something.

Fact is, most folks don't give a rat's about what is said here. It's all time wasting entertainment. I don't care for video games, so here I am. Apparently, for a good part of the day, some of you have nothing better to do as well.

At the same time, you all need to realize that your wild conspiracy theories and kook liberal nonsense doesn't really play in the mainstream. Not everyone thinks like you.

I apoligize if this frustrates you all when Pelosi and Reid and the rest of the Democrats (and America as well) don't cowtow to your wishes, but they know where their bread is buttered.

Leaflets said to warn of Iran move into north Iraq

SULAIMANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - Kurdish authorities in northeastern Iraq said on Tuesday they were investigating the authenticity of leaflets warning villagers to evacuate ahead of an Iranian military offensive against Kurdish rebels.

Hundreds of villagers have fled their homes in Iraq's mountainous northeast while others hid in caves after what local authorities said was days of intermittent shelling by Iran across the border.

Looks like they are trying to harm our troops.....

  268. FreedomOfinformationAct Says:

Based on psychiatric examination of his mannerisms and behavior over the past seven years, Bush has repeatedly time and time again proven himself mentally unstable, completely out of touch with reality and unfit to serve as commander-in-chief of the united states armed forces. He and Cheney are endangering our nation.

Either they immediately step down willingly, or we the people impeach them both for war crimes.

    Your move 'loyal bushies'.

  269. The Oracle Says:

    Does anyone feel a DRAFT???

A couple of weeks ago, a Republican floated a trial baloon over reinstating the military draft.

Now, Bush draws a comparison between his Iraq War and the Vietnam War, with the one major difference being that we had a military draft back then, while today's military is all-volunteer.

I think these two events, though weeks apart, are connected.

And corresponds with the recent Bush/Cheney-generated hysteria associated with their wanting to attack Iran and today's "leak" that this attack will occur within the next six months.

If this attack does occur, then I foresee not only a draft being called for due to the expansion of Bush's war beyond Iraq's borders, but I also foresee the collapse of the U.S. economy sometime early next year, brought on not only by Bush/Cheney insanely attacking Iran, but also by their calling for martial law nationwide, shortly after any retaliatory attack by the Iranians inside the United States.

This is the chain of events I see happening unless Bush and Cheney are stopped. Impeach them both NOW. Save our country.

I don't know what's more pathethic, the possibility that your like most trolls here, pretending to be people they arent (lawyers, soldiers, PhD holders), or the alternate possibility that you truly do have 5 children and are actually sitting on your high and mighty moral pedestal/keyboard, thinking you and your dreams of nuclear genocide are the pinnacle of ethical thinking.

Go outside, spend some time with your kids. Your obviously a very unhappy person if you have five little ones, and a wife and you actually need to spend time arguing on the internet just to pretend like your actually doing something for your cause. You think what your masters tell you to think. Saddam is bad. Except when he killed the muslims we wanted him to kill.
There is nothing america cannot accomplish. America is magic. America can make Iraq a different sort of democracy than the one the Palestinians elected. yah yah... the proof is in the pudding. Your such a smart guy, with such good judgements, why dont you make some predictions about world events for the next few years, and lets see how many of them come true. Because so far, the people you support are batting about "zero" when it comes to iraq.. hopefully you've got better judgement than them.

  273. Free RePubic Readers have sex with their mothers Says:

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/08/22/iraq.democracy/
" But for the first time, exasperated front-line U.S. generals talk openly of non-democratic governmental alternatives, and while the two top U.S. officials in Iraq still talk about preserving the country's nascent democratic institutions, they say their ambitions aren't as "lofty" as they once had been. "Democratic institutions are not necessarily the way ahead in the long-term future," said Brig. Gen. John "Mick" Bednarek, part of Task Force Lightning in Diyala province, one of the war's major battlegrounds."

  274. Probus Says:

The lesson of Vietnam is to not lie the American people into a war we don't need to fight. The same is true of Iraq. Iraq is in a civil war just like Vietnam had an unbeatable guerrilla war. We didn't leave Vietnam soon enough and it cost us too many American lives. We are making the same mistake in Iraq. The mistake in Vietnam like in Iraq is not getting out sooner enough.
