In his speech to Veterans of Foreign Wars today, President Bush declared that the lesson of Vietnam is that we must not withdraw from Iraq. UCLA historian Robert Dallek, who has written about the comparisons of Iraq to Vietnam, says Bush is “twisting history” with his new analogy:
“It just boggles my mind, the distortions I feel are perpetrated here by the president,” he said in a telephone interview.
“We were in Vietnam for 10 years. We dropped more bombs on Vietnam than we did in all of World War II in every theater. We lost 58,700 American lives, the second-greatest loss of lives in a foreign conflict. And we couldn’t work our will,” he said.
“What is Bush suggesting? That we didn’t fight hard enough, stay long enough? That’s nonsense. It’s a distortion,” he continued. “We’ve been in Iraq longer than we fought in World War II. It’s a disaster, and this is a political attempt to lay the blame for the disaster on his opponents. But the disaster is the consequence of going in, not getting out.”

August 22nd, 2007 at 4:38 pmUnfortunetely bush will have plenty of supporters, in the media and in the public (as witnessed by the trolls who post here) who will mindlessly repeat the lie, any lie, as long as bush says it first.

August 22nd, 2007 at 4:39 pmJust when you thought all the \”we lost the will to win in Vietnam\” delusionals were safely in their dust bins, Bush hauls them out, and asks for advice on his next speech.

August 22nd, 2007 at 4:45 pmBush is running out of ways to stay politically relevant until he leaves office. To many, he’s past that point. Now he looks just desperate.
If he could just give some meaningful and accurate comparisons between Iraq and Vietnam — you know, something that indicates he grasps the complexities of either conflict — he might have something.
August 22nd, 2007 at 4:46 pmPerhaps GW will again don his letter sweater and once more lift his megaphone to give the American public a hearty sis-boom-bah. We, as a nation will turn our caps backward and wave our terrible towels and shout our approval. And the Generals will make a stunning comeback to upset the Insurgents in OT! Next week we take on the Mullahs for the title. Go Team!
August 22nd, 2007 at 4:47 pmI have a thesis to posit: that the Iraq War is in fact an extension of the Vietnam War. The United States has never come to terms with the Vietnam War and same as the German Army in WWI has blamed the loss on a “stab in the back” from the “libruls” at home.
Iraq 2003 is an attempt to exact revenge on the “libruls” for Vietnam….
August 22nd, 2007 at 4:47 pmA more apt anology would have been to the wingnuts beloved WWII.
We all know what happened to Hitler and Germany after it, like us, embarked on a path of preemptive wars to “protect it’s national security”.

August 22nd, 2007 at 4:51 pmIf the President’s misuse of the lessons of Vietnam sounds familiar, it should. After all, just last week 2008 Republican White House frontrunner Rudy Giuliani said virtually the same thing.

That is the lesson of Vietnam I wish we would remember now.

Who am I? I’m the fellow who doesn’t give a damn about what Dallek has to say. Dallek is a mere college historian from UCLA. He’s not anything more, nor anything less.
To me, Dallek’s opinion means less than President Bush’s opinion means to you.
August 22nd, 2007 at 5:00 pmThis “historian” (read: ideologue masquerading as a professor) is nothing but a partisan and fanatical ideologue; he also proves that many in academia lean shamelessly to the leftarded side. He failed to disprove Bush’s Iraq-Vietnam comparison. Like the scores of intellectual cowards and debate-impaired progtards here, the “historian” failed to challenge and thus disprove Bush based on Bush’s arguments. Instead, this sheeple-zombie of a historian just unimaginatively regurgitated leftarded talking points where he demonized Bush. This “historian” is such a chronic imbecile that even I can teach him a lesson about how Bush’s Iraq-Vietnam comparison is apt. Bush is right because: when the US withdrew in Vietnam, many innocent civilians were massacred; the same will happen in Iraq if the US pulls out prematurely. In Vietnam, the pullout was instigated by traitor politicians and the lib media; in Iraq, the same is about to occur.

Because your President just talked about it today maybe just a thought. As he has consistently said that 9/11 changed everything and that Vietnam was not a good analogy to our current situation and now is using the analogy as an excuse not to leave.
August 22nd, 2007 at 5:01 pmBut America then withdrew its support, allowing the communist North to conquer the South.
And what was the aftermath of this ???Viet Nam has joined the WTO, and is becoming an asian economic powerhouse.
China, whom we fought the Viet Nam War to “contain”, is making practically every manufactured good we buy, and is ironicaly lending us the money to fight the Iraq war, by buying up our debt.
If Bush had really understood the lessons of the Viet Nam War, we would not be in the quagmire that we find ourselves in today.

I think what he’s trying to say is everybody in Iran, Iraq and throughout the middle east are not terrorists are you condoning indiscrimately nuking entire countries.
August 22nd, 2007 at 5:24 pmAt least in Vietnam we had a clear defined enemy, the NVA. And a clear goal, prevent the NVA from overtaking South Vietnam. In Iraq we have no clear mission, enemy, goal or exit strategy. The Sunnis are the enemy because they supported Saddam, and Al Qaeda is Sunni. Also the majority of foreign fighters in Iraq are Sunni. Except we are arming Sunni militants and working to protect Sunni neighborhoods from Shia extremists. So the Shiites are the enemy, after all, most are being aided by Iran. Except that the Shia were the main people oppressed under Saddam, and the ones we went there to “free”. So Sadr is a terrorist, but he is also an influential part of Iraq’s government.
So essentially, our artillerymen and tank gunners can leave Iraq once they are a free democracy (their constitution declares them as an Islamic Theocracy, same as Iran), and once they have a good tax code.

August 22nd, 2007 at 5:26 pmLike that bank robber who dropped his resume on the floor while getting away. So, busted.
This “historian†(read: ideologue masquerading as a professor) is nothing but a partisan and fanatical ideologue; he also proves that many in academia lean shamelessly to the leftarded side. He failed to disprove Bush’s Iraq-Vietnam comparison. Like the scores of intellectual cowards and debate-impaired progtards here, the “historian†failed to challenge and thus disprove Bush based on Bush’s arguments. Instead, this sheeple-zombie of a historian just unimaginatively regurgitated leftarded talking points where he demonized Bush. This “historian†is such a chronic imbecile that even I can teach him a lesson about how Bush’s Iraq-Vietnam comparison is apt. Bush is right because: when the US withdrew in Vietnam, many innocent civilians were massacred; the same will happen in Iraq if the US pulls out prematurely. In Vietnam, the pullout was instigated by traitor politicians and the lib media; in Iraq, the same is about to occur.

You’ve studied the same history as Bush, which is none. Conservatives always get their heads handed to them, quite often literally. Liberals founded this country by defying the most powerful empire in the world, and beat them handily, because conservatives are cowards and lack imagination. The French aristocracy lost their heads in a liberal uprising. Hitler, a conservative of the first order, lost. Throughout history, conservatives are beaten down again and again, and never learn to be civilized and human. They keep returning to the unevolved state of jungle ethos, like the savages and barbarians they have not quite descended from. Liberalism ultimately wins, despite the setbacks of the savage monsters spawned by conservative psychopathy. America is the perfect example of liberalism winning and changing the world in doing so. You have completely destroyed whatever credibility you imagined you had with that supremely asinine, stupid, unresearched, kneejerk, ignorant statement. If you had a wife and kids, they would have you committed.

August 22nd, 2007 at 5:57 pmRobert Dallek is being intellectually dishonest. The number of casualties in Iraq is nothing compared with the losses we saw in Vietnam and WWII. Unless we want to just throw away all of the progress we have made thus far in Iraq, we need to secure a solid US victory, which is what Bush was saying. For Dallek to suggest that Bush meant we did not fight hard enough in Vietnam is absurd, and it is a strawman argument.

You think it’s OK to descend to the trolls’ level, fine, but don’t expect not to get called on it. It serves no purpose except to validate the nasty comments the trolls already make about “liberals.”
August 22nd, 2007 at 6:05 pmThe trolls seem to be operating under the assumption that having “the most powerful military in the world” makes the U.S. immune. Well, let’s explore what has happened to some of the most powerful forces in history; in no particular order.
1: The Spanish Armada. Defeated
2: Ancient Greece. Defeated
3: Rome. Defeated
4: Various Asian empires. All defeated.
5: Nazi Germany. Defeated, dismantled and utterly destroyed.
Are you seeing a pattern? You see, when a Nation becomes a threat to enough other nations, said Nation finds itself fighting alone. And, what’s more, when a Nation is hijacked by criminal leaders, the Nation often rises against them.
If the U.S. started “nuking” people it would result in our annihilation. Whether from within, or without, we would CEASE TO EXIST. Get it?

Some folks may be proud of their profanity, their Anti-Americanism, their lack of support for our military, and their willingness to be an appeaser rather than fight for what is right. I feel sorry for you, for you live your lives in bitterness and despair.
However, I certainly don’t lose any sleep over it.
After all, RagingGurrl: You know what they say about the “wierd cat lady”?
August 22nd, 2007 at 6:24 pmYou don’t. You merely nuke the people who believe in that abstract concept. Thus, destroying it.

You are so stupid that it makes my head spin. I am amazed that your own mother did not drown you when you were born, she should have seen that you are evil and not only evil but stupid evil.
Do the world a favor and stop using perfectly good oxygen, you are wasting it.

Bush surrendered to Osama immediately and completely. he’s the appeaser, you’re just the tool he uses to shovel billions into his and his friends’ overseas accounts. You’re a simpleton.

August 22nd, 2007 at 6:29 pmYes - truly. He comments about dropping nukes on anyone who is believed to be radical Muslim - collateral damage doesn’t concern him. He has no problem with mass murder, but for chrissake don’t talk about a BJ!
August 22nd, 2007 at 6:31 pmA strong military is a requirement of a strong nation these days..BUT.. what has Bush done to our Military???
August 22nd, 2007 at 6:31 pmOur all volunteer Army is in danger of collapsing for lack of volunteers.
Our $400 Billion a year military is unable to stop the IED”S and suicide bombers… a cheap and deadly answer to our high tech advantage.
And this Asymetric Warfare is being spread throughout the Muslim world to insurgencies everywhere.
And we are not paying the Bill for this misadventure…. we are charging it to the detriment of future American generations.

If you had children, you might feel differently.
August 22nd, 2007 at 6:32 pmExplain again please how keeping our military bogged down in a pointless (to put it kindly) occupation of a foreign country makes us safer. Perhaps I’m missing something?
August 22nd, 2007 at 6:33 pmblackball - yes, sure his kids came home. That’s why he’s still on. Mass murder anyone? Let’s talk about a kid friendly subject like dropping nukes on people!
Take your ball and play in traffic.
August 22nd, 2007 at 6:34 pmO. Bigfoot you’re still here - oh my, my. What can I do to offend you? Please let us know. Obviously you all must enjoy talking about killing those nasty Muslims at the dinner table, sharing those nuke jokes with your wife and kids - what a lovely quality family you must have. and now with your eldest almost ready to join the military to do some killing on his very own. You must be so proud!

We simply fight this battle against radical Islam in the same fashion they fight us. No quarter.
They killed their own in the World Trade Center without blinking an eye. Collateral damage meant nothing to them.
You think there were no Muslims in the World Trade Center or on those planes? Then you are absolutely nuts.
Radical Islam has no regard for it’s own people, let alone for us. It’s up to Islam to police their own. In the absense of that, we must take up the job. Another 9/11 cannot be allowed. If it means the end of Islam as they know it, so be it.

Bigfoot posts almost as much obscenity as Mr Pee.
The troll ought to start their own “Clinton’s BJ” blog.

Hey Gurrl? May I have your permission to reprint this post and send it to our troops overseas? I am sure they would be most heartened to hear of your continuing support of our military.
Congrats! You have come out of the closet as an open desparager of our military!

I have children. I agree with RagingGurrl.
August 22nd, 2007 at 6:44 pmRagingGurrl,
You sound like you need to drop the cats off at a friends house this Friday, and invite one of the single men from your office home for dinner, or catch a flick with a friend. Don’t waste your life, enjoy some human contact while you are still alive and well! Hey, it may even help with your rage problem.
August 22nd, 2007 at 6:46 pmO.Bigfoot - Bush has no regard for the truth - He went into Iraq instead of continuing to pursue those who were responsible for 9-11. You idiots bought into the neocon Iraq War. We Progressives did
