NYT claims ‘anti-war activists’ protest military funerals.

Editor and Publisher reports:

In a report [yesterday] on Sen. Barack Obama’s appearance this week at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Kansas City, New York Times reporter Jeff Zeleney took a decidedly wrong turn in referring to one statement.

Zeleney wrote that Obama “said it was wrong for anti-war activists to protest at military funerals, declaring: ‘It needs to stop’.”

The quote at the end was accurate but nowhere did Obama refer to the protesters as “anti-war activists.” In fact, the protesters who have caused much outrage have been anti-gay activists.

typical slipshod cut-corner generalization of the people in this country who are opposed to the war in iraq.

How could a journalist from the NYT not know about the whack jobs that protest everything because of homosexuality?

  3. grover nerdqquist says:

obviously, if you hate gays you are bashing the military!

Aww… give the man a break. He’s just trying to impress Rupert so he won’t lose his job after Murdoch takes over the NYT.

  6. TPisevenmoreradicallyleftthanNYT says:

TP’s lying through its teeth AGAIN by falsifying that these protesters are anti-gay protesters. TP’s obviously suffering from hypersensitivity about even the NYT unmasking just who the lowlives in the anti-war movement are, since progressives refuse to admit that anti-war activists also seriously hate US servicemen. The group in question is actually a fundamental and radicalized “religious” group (this doesn’t make them right-wing because that would be a leftarded oversimplification) which doesn’t protest gays. It gloats at US servicemen’s funerals because it believes that the soldiers’ deaths are punishment for the US’ acceptance of queers. However, because this group protests and relishes the deaths of US soldiers, it more closely identifies with the American left, which does the same atrocity against US soldiers. Further proving this group is really on the left, the ACLU actually represents these devils in court, arguing for their “right” to continue disrupting US servicemen’ s funerals.

That’s the first time I have ever heard Fred Phelps and his merry band of loonies referred to as “anti-war” activists.

Real anti-war activists (unless they are as demented as Phelps) wouldn’t choose military funerals as a venue for their protests. They want to be taken seriously by the public, and they know intruding on the grief of families who have lost loved ones to this stupid war isn’t the way to do it.

Phelps just has a crazy obsession that he is pleasing God, and getting his name in the paper is more important than swaying anybody to his point of view.

Zeleney needs to proof his column a little better. And so should his editor.

  13. Lettuce says:

Zeleney’s a really good guy and a really good reporter. I’m gonna chalk this up to a reporter’s mistake and a failure of editing. It’s ridiculous that it happens, and my opinion in no way makes the mistake less frustrating and destructive, but, again, we’re not talking Nedra Pickler or Judi Miller here…

I do find the Troll posting amusing in that, right there, is the damage this sort of meme causes. It just gives food to people who should be starving for reasons to blame this on Liberals. There’ll always be something.

Also interesting to me: The way the Bush anti-bush/war protest manual that just came out took cues from the gay activists who used similar counter-protests to block out Phelps and friends when they’d harrass families at the funerals of AIDS victims. (The “angels” who’d appear on stilts with long, flowing arms to block out the truly evil Phelps’ signs were always my favorite.

Either very subtle and clever propaganda… or… sloppy beyond words. Either scenario is a lose-lose for the NYT.

But the biggest losers are the American people… because a democracy cannot exist without accurate and complete information being disseminated by our media.

So…We are evolving into a world of propaganda, misinformation and missing information for the profit of global Corporations and their corrupt cronnies who feed off of us, the People.

It is the terrorists within who are destroying our country right now.

  16. Francois says:

Haha, hopefully he was doing that to detract from Phelps’ real motives for protesting those funerals.

What freedom are our soldiers dying in Iraq to protect? Our freedom to fund an indefinite occupation? Our freedom to forcefully seize the natural resources of other countries? I find it highly hypocritical when people say our soldiers are protecting our freedoms, while they are actually being eroded by Bush and his crime syndicate at home.

It’s really disappointing to see people using the word “Victory” as if this is some simple, black and white situation that we have in Iraq. This general misunderstanding of what is going on in Iraq will inevitably lead to more US casualties with the same result. I don’t see how you can “win” an occupation where the population does not want you there and the resistance is backed by the people and the government of the country.

  29. Tom3 says:

How can “victory” be an option in Iraq when nobody has defined what it is?

    Comment by TPisevenmoreradicallyleftthanNYT — August 22, 2007 @ 2:23 pm

I think you win the award for most absurd statements in a single post today. I hardly know where to begin to respond.

Let me ask for a little clarification on some of your ravings, since some of them are truly baffling:

    1) When you say “NYT unmasking just who the lowlives in the anti-war movement are”, what are you talking about? Did you think that Zeleney was correct and Obama really WAS talking about anti-war protesters disrupting funerals? Or do you mean something else?

    2) “since progressives refuse to admit that anti-war activists also seriously hate US servicemen” — on what do you base this accusation? Anti-war activists aren’t anti-troops. We would like to keep as many of them alive as possible by getting them home and out of an insane conflict. We would like to protect their bodies by getting them armor they need. We would like to protect their minds by getting them the rest between deployments they need. What, exactly, are the right doing for them?

    3) “The group in question…doesn’t protest gays. It gloats at US servicemen’s funerals because it believes that the soldiers’ deaths are punishment for the US’ acceptance of queers.” — and by this you are saying this group isn’t against gays, it’s just against acceptance of “queers”? Yeah — this makes sense (NOT).

    4) “because this group protests and relishes the deaths of US soldiers, it more closely identifies with the American left, which does the same atrocity against US soldiers.” — why do you think we “relish” the deaths of soldiers? What evidence do you have of this? We are saddened and outraged by these deaths, and we’d like them to stop.

    4) “Further proving this group is really on the left, the ACLU actually represents these devils in court” — why do you think this paints Phelps as a leftist? What it really does is debunk the myth that the ACLU is a leftist organization. The American Civil Liberties Union focuses on only one thing — protecting the civil rights of ANYONE, no matter where in the political spectrum they are. They will fight for whistleblowers fired from their jobs, and they will fight for the KKK to be given a parade permit. Civil rights is not just a “lefty” issue, you know.
