Think Progress

White House says it is not endorsing pro-Allawi campaign.

Earlier today, ThinkProgress noted that the Republican lobbying firm Barbour Griffith & Rogers was plotting to replace Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki with former interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi. CNN reports that a senior Bush administration official acknowledged the White House is aware of the lobbying campaign because the firm is “blasting e-mails all over town” criticizing Maliki and promoting Allawi. “But the administration official insisted that White House officials are not privately involved or blessing the lobbying campaign to undermine al-Maliki.”

UPDATE: Salon’s Joan Walsh notes that a White House spokesperson addressed the Allawi issue in a press briefing today. She adds, “Iraqi democracy wasn’t good to Allawi, whose leadership didn’t survive elections. But the CIA-connected leader is a right-wing favorite.”

So that means they are endorsing the campaign.

The White House isn’t running the US. Maliki knows how he got his job and he knows the White House are liars. Look for Iran to step up and support Iraq. Now Warner comes from Iraq and say we should withdraw as other Republicans come back and say it was great.
Now I know Senator Vitter was in Iraq for prostitutes but were his friends doing the same thing. I can’t believe they didn’t see the mess Iraq is in as Senator Warner saw it. Now I know why Senator Vitter and others were smiling so mush prostitution is legal in Iraq.

    Is endoring anything like endorsing?

  5. AnotherKickToTheNuts says:

When will America get tired of seeing images of fully armed American soldiers kicking down Iraqi doors? Or politicians walking around the Green Zone in body armor? After 3700 America soldiers already killed, one might think Bush and the neocon failure would be able to convince a few more Americans to give a rip about Iraq.

  6. Hannitymakeslibtardswettheirbedsallnight says:

The progtarded sheeple here may not be too bright to remember who Allawi was–since they rely on progressive demagogues like Toilet Paper hate-site to tell them what to think–so I’ll fill them in. Allawi was Iraq’s first PM post-liberation. One thing is certain, regardless of whether this Republican lobbying firm is really behind a campaign to get Allawi reinstalled or not (since this report comes from the Commie News Network, it’s best to dismiss it outright). When Allawi was the PM, he had a reputation for toughness and aggressively going after terrorists. Plus, he’s probably more pro-US than Allawi since he really didn’t spend his exile backed by Iran, as Maliki did. Since installing Allawi would mean an increased toughness in targeting terrorists to stabilize Iraq for a political solution, we know libs/progs are against this immediately! That’s because lib/progs only want US defeat in Iraq, more civilian casualties (so they can blame Bush!), and a base of operations for Al-Qaeda.

  8. MapleStreet says:

Of course Shrub knows nothing of this republican party action. He’s only said a gazillion times that he is the head of the Repub party. He’s only run one of the most tightly regimented administrations in history. It seems rather convenient that he doesn’t know about this (much like the memory of repubs before congress).

Like the Good Book says, “don’t let your right hand know what your left hand is doing.” Of course, Jesus was talking about when you give alms.

  9. Lawrence E. Rafferty says:

Progtarded sheeple like myself don’t have to blame Bush for the deaths in Iraq. Since he is the Decider and decided to invade Iraq, it is not our fault that he screwed up again. His record on Iraq is a perfect zero! The whole world is watching! Maybe he should stick to trying to rewrite history in Vietnam.

  10. X- Conservative says:

Speaking of lies, Hannityblahblah, aren’t you as a conservative tired of being lied to by these Cons who dstroyed the conservative movement and dont care about conservative causes?

Maliki is basically Iranian, as Chalabi basically is. Malikis trip to Syria was reportedly about setting a date for foreign troops to leave.

Syria and Iran are part of the axis of evil. Saudi, even with a 30 billion dollar arms package didn’t want to help secure Iraq because they view Maliki as Iranian.

Petraeus is making progress in Iraq thru deals with the Sunni and Maliki does not get along with him.

So which is it Hannityblahblah are you supporting Maliki and Iran and Syria or Petraeus and the Sunnis who are fighting Al Qaeda?

Bush treated us to his “Fantasy History of the Vietnam War yesterday. His bumbling ignorance is making our heads swim. He “don’t know much about history,” as the song says.

While we’re talking Vietnam, the Neo-Cons are working to dump PM al-Maliki, which is a real parallel to Vietnam. In 1963, the CIA decided that South Vietman’s leader Ngo Dinh Diem was no longer useful to the US. He was captured with CIA approval and killed by his own men on Nov. 1, 1963. After Diem’s death, SV went to hell and the US dug deeper into the quagmire.

If I were al-Maliki, I would watch my back. Bush is talking Vietnam this week and he might repeat the disaster of 1963.

I wonder what would happen in their neighborhood if a foreign (non-Christian) military of overwhelming force came in and totally destroyed all semblance of structure, including the electric, water and food sources for hundreds of miles. I wonder if their society would be able to produce a functional “democracy” while foreign corporations slurped up all the natural resources.

“This war will pay for itself.” “This war will be over in a few weeks or maybe months.” “This war is because Saddam has Weapons of Mass Destruction.” “This is a just war.” “This war is to liberate the Iraqi people from a brutal dictator.” “This war is because Iraqi women can’t go to school.” “This war is being fought so we don’t have a mushroom cloud on the horizon.” “This war is because they hate our freedom.”

Very astute and effective. I haven’t seen Mr. Pus (a little pet name) go so long between posts since he stole his “mommy’s” Viagra and got carpel tunnel.

No email campaign is going to go on without approval.
Do you think if anyone else did this they may be called traitors?Or maybe they would have to answer for undermining the efforts of this well thought out mess.
Or maybe this current guy is only in there to take the heat until it looks like he is removed by popular demand.
Then the number 1 choice all along gets stuck in and the oil agreement is instantly signed and wow!See how real bushcon execs work.
They get the job done for the 0.001%
When was the law changed to allow the military to work as a private security force?

Oil, baby, oil. Bush is just doing what you gotta do if you want to be close to the sheiks. Different cultures have different strokes and Bush was brought up with this stuff. This is how the rich oil Americans hang with the sheiks.

  119. Jay Randal says:

I’m not much into kissing male members, either, and I’ve got a pretty standard Northern European comfort zone with other guys. But in the Arab world, holding hands isn’t weird.

I don’t want to hold hands with guys, any guys, but there’s nothing particularly creepy about it. It’s nothing like some of the male/male contact I’ve seen in my life and I managed to get used to that, for the most part.

Pelosi wearing a headscarf in Syria is emboldening muslims but Bush swapping spit and holding hands with them doesn’t. Should these leaders be following the protocal of the leader of the free world, cough, cough.

    9/11 Terrorists From:

    Syria = None

Saudi Arabia = All but one

I thought there was a war on terror.

  132. Probus says:

Bush will only be replacing one inept leader with another is Maliki is removed. Neither can at this point control the violence or effect political progress with the Sunnis. The surge was a bad idea to begin with. No political progress has been made. The civil war has continued to get worse. The surge has failed and so has Bush.

    >Jeffersonian Democracy didn’t even work in the US. We had to switch to >Hamiltonian Federalism, which Iraq should do.

We don’t live in a democracy?
We don’t vote for our elected leaders? You crack me up..
I’m not going to waste time debating the definitions of different forms of representative government with you, your arent worth it..

the iraqis will NEVER, EVER pick leaders who are Pro-American. Ever. Not under any form of representative government. We supported Saddam for years because we knew this to be true.

I think its funny watching you idiots try to packpedal from the whole idea of letting iraqis pick their leaders, which was now one of your few remaining “talking points” about why this war is so important..

Right Mr. P… and uhm.. what percentage of the hijackers was from syria? Which of these two countries helped fund some of these hijackers?

since they are sick of their country being pulled apart by the “imported PMs” – Maliki, Allawi, Jaafari, let the Iraqis decide their own Pm ,
