Shays Lashes Out: Congress Has ‘A Harder Time Getting Along Than Sunnis And Shiites’

shaysThe Washington Post reported recently that between April 2006 and election day, Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT) announced at least 25 new federal grants or projects totaling more than $46 million. Seven Bush administration officials visited Shays’ district during that time.

Soon after the Post report, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, announced he was initiating an investigation into whether the White House made improper use of federal resources in the 2006 elections to boost Republicans, including Shays, who narrowly won a tough re-election fight.

Yesterday, Shays bitterly attacked Waxman’s inquiry as “a partisan witch hunt.” As proof of this, Shays complained that congressional investigators are only looking into him and “not going back and looking at what might have happened under Bill Clinton.” While every action President Clinton took was thoroughly investigated, Shays has thus far eluded oversight. Now Shays is lashing out:

“It’s the kind of thing that I think might happen in a place like Russia where the party in power goes after the party that they want never to be in power,” Shays said of the investigation. “This kind of stuff just grosses me out.”

Later, speaking about Iraq, Shays argued, “Republicans and Democrats have a harder time getting along than Sunnis and Shiites.” The stress of being placed under the heat of a congressional investigation appears to be getting to Shays. Regardless of whatever ideological differences exist in Congress, they do not translate into sectarian bloodshed on the House floor.

UPDATE: My Left Nutmeg has notes from the Shays press briefing.

UPDATE II: Shays gets livid over the audacity of bloggers to ask him a question at a press conference and tape it. Watch it:

Anything that Congress does to perform its oversight duties is considered a “partisan witch hunt” by Republicans. I wonder what Shay thought about Ken Starr investigating everything that Clinton had done since high school to be a “partisan witch hunt”.

I have no problem with Congress cleaning up “House” and investigating and demanding accountability. But it should not be merely a partisan tool. It should be a tough principled stand.

    >but I don’t believe I’ve heard anything

theres a criminal case going on in that one. in such cases its pretty much SOP for civil actions and acts to be suspended until the related criminal matter is dealt with one way or the other. also, after the matter was resolved criminally, Jefferson would be less likely to have the right to invoke the 5th. The would be especially true if he was found innocent and could not be retried because of double jepardy.. And if he was found guilty, I guess he woudl likely resign anyway… so…

Umm… no it isn’t, you moron. Try to keep up, liberal.

    Follow along:

A constitution is a statement which lays out how a government is organized. So:

Supporting your leaders [i.e. your gov't, those that make sure the Nation is run correctly] = supporting your troops [i.e. those that protect the Nation and who receive orders from the gov't]= supporting your country [i.e. the Nation] = supporting your Constitution. [i.e. a statement which lays out how a government is organized]

    DOES NOT MEAN

its not possible that some leader can come along at some later date and violate anything in that statement

All constitutions change with time, even out own.

Here is a sort documentary about the Battle of Salamis, which is arguably the most important battle in the history of Western Civilization. It was there that the Greek forces defeated the Persians, and reclaimed Europe for it’s rightful owners. -

Looks like he’s been taking history (and English) lessons from The Joker.

    Hysterical.

  104. Bush is a WAR CRIMINAL TRAITOR says:

    From Wikipedia:

Shays has listed former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich as his political inspiration, saying “Newt Gingrich is my hero.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Shays

    That about says it all…

  105. Marcus Aurelius - actual dead Roman Emperor says:

    Yes it does.

    Comment by Makarios — August 24, 2007 @ 2:01 pm

He says, as he picks through his own feces for nuggets of enlightenment.

    That boy needs pants.

  106. PrahaPartizan says:

Shays knows that even if the blogger filming him doesn’t ask a question, Shays is screwed. The Publican strategy for the last fifty years has been to pitch a different story to different audiences, hoping that they never get caught. The printed page can’t convey the intensity and “in the moment” nature of comments the way video can, so the Publicans have lied with impunity. Now, they don’t know what might get put up on the web. Just keeping Shays honest will sink his campaign. Once all of his constituency sees – really sees – what sort of right-wing shill he is, his career is over. He knows that and it scares him silly.

  107. oldtree says:

what the hell is that thing next to it?

    What the hell IS that?

Another whiny Republican who can’t handle the pressure. Big surprise.

    Shay and his wife

  114. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Seems to me that if Shays is so adament about not answering a question from a blogger vs a journalist (do they even exist any more?) in order to avoid embarrassment, he just screwed up with that clip.

    Somebody better call the whaaaambulance.

  115. Marcus Aurelius says:

Battle of Salamis? Maklios was shocked and disappointed when he was informed that (ockfighting involved chickens.

  116. The Null Anus of Jesus says:

    >> I already answered. See my comment at #59.

    ok….

    # 59 >No, that is not what I am saying.

    what are you not saying?

  117. Jay says:

Why, if you’re the “blogger” who attempted to ask Shays a question, wouldn’t this be a sufficient answer to his finger pointing whine:

I happen to be a tax paying citizen seeking the truth?

They answer to us, not the other way around.

  118. Dermot says:

Shay and his wife in PC

  119. Dermot says:

When I write out PC my comment gets deleted. How to communicate what PC means in code. Piece core

  120. Dermot says:

  121. Troll Hater says:

    > Like Bush and his Vietnam speech, the conservatives are smoking the cheap crack,

So, basically, they are picking something which looks like West vs. Middle East? If the Persians had won, we would all be talking some Phoenician dialect and no-one would give a flying one. Go!! Hannibal Barca!

  122. Dermot says:

It only took five or six tries to get my comment through the censors. Apparently PC is another taboo topic.

  123. Dermot says:

    Piece core is taboo topic

  124. gummitch says:

    Comment by Jay — August 24, 2007 @ 2:13 pm

Especially if the “blogger” is a constituent.

  125. Jay Randal says:

Republicans treated Democrats like dirt, in the last Congress, so Shays is a hypocrite and full of crap too. He cheated to get re-elected in CT, so he needs to resign from the House of Representatives.

  126. Dermot says:

If piece core is a taboo topic on TP, what’s the criteria or agenda? The Piece Core wing of the Dem establishment would be the upper crust Kennedy types, of which Shays is one.

So why target Shays here? Perhaps it’s just one cousin bear playfully slapping another cousin bear.

  127. Perry Logan says:

Amongst his craven squealings, the right-wing degenerate makes one good point: “Republicans and Democrats have a harder time getting along than Sunnis and Shiites.”

America has been in a state of civil war ever since the Right committed treason in 2000.

Stealing an election is not a political act. It is an act of war. The left and right are going to fight.

  128. Jay Randal says:

Dermot > do not link creepy Shays to the Democrats. He is a phony like Lieberman.

  129. The Null Anus of Jesus says:

    >> I already answered. See my comment at #59.

How could you answer a question in comment #59 that I didnt ask until comment #85 ?

remind me, what was that you wern’t saying, again?

    [crickets chriping]…

  130. Dermot says:

    That’s all show Perry.

First of all there is no Left in Congress except for Bernie Sanders.

For the rest – they are all members of the same club. The money club.

  131. Dermot says:

Jay – If I could I would include a link but the censors kept deleting my post regarding the link between Shays and piece core, Kennedy’s, Shrivers, Bushs. They all belong to same country club. The US is their country and they’ve turned it into their private club.

  132. Jay says:

I’m late to this thread, why is PCorps filtered here?

  133. The Null Anus of Jesus says:

I asked you 4 questions in # 85 you inbred geek…. you answered all 4 of them with one line from comment #59? the answer is the same for all 4 questions?

  134. Makarios says:

Comment by The Null Anus of Jesus — August 24, 2007 @ 2:23 pm

    The comment referrenced in #59.

  135. Dermot says:

As someone says to Val Kilmer’s character in that movie surreptiously about the FBI and Wounded Knee

“We’re all living on the reservation…”

  136. Dermot says:

    Jay

I don’t know why PC is filtered? It’s an interesting question. Today I’ve been censored for quoting HC and mentioning PC, not even in the same comment.

  137. Jay Randal says:

Dermot > Shays was once considered a Republican moderate, but that is an act. He tries to act liberal for show, but on Iraq War he is a hawk like his pal Lieberman.

  138. Makarios says:

they change according to the whims of the current leader? the constition can never be in conflict with the leader?

    No. But they change.
No. The Judiciary branch determine if it is, though.

    Read a book, liberal.

  139. Jay says:

    Dermot,

This blog has some truly strange taboo topics. Would someone managing or monitoring please fill us in? It seems very heavy-handed.

  140. The Null Anus of Jesus says:

    > The comment referrenced in #59.

which was the same as the 4 questions I asked in #85.

    >Supporting your leaders
    >[i.e. your gov’t, those that make sure the Nation is run correctly]

So Hitler made sure his country was governed correctly? according to your delusional defintions, thats what logically follows, right?

  147. The Null Anus of Jesus says:

    > No. The Judiciary branch determine if it is, though.

So if the Judiciary branch determines that a president was acting unconstitionally, then supporting the president is not equivalent to supporting the constition? Right?

  148. Dermot says:

How is #145 on topic, yet it remains? Whereas if you quote HC or mention PC your comments are censored.

  149. Jay Randal says:

TP has a filtering device that prevents any posts that use certain words or phrases. Plus there seems to be a time-out device that can block a post.

  159. The Null Anus of Jesus says:

    >“Leaders” includes more than just “the President.”

So what bearing does the fact that there are leaders other than the president have on my argument? Any government official can act in violation of the constitution. So what? I don’t expect you to know that because you get your legal expertise from reruns of Matlock you watch in your grandmothers basement.

Ted Nugent, of course, is another Chickenhawk TRAITOR like Bush, Cheney, Libby, Delay, Gingrich, etc.

Nugent ate Vienna Sausages, drank Pepsis and crapped in his pants for TWO WEEKS to avoid service in Vietnam.

So much for scumbags like Nugent.

If anyone had said such about the TRAITOR Bush, they would be in jail.

At least David Vitter wore DIAPERS.

Let’s just say – Shays, if you’ve done nothing wrong, then you don’t have anything to hide isn’t that right honey? Now answer the nice boy’s question – you’re not afraid of a blogger are you?

  181. mattw says:

Shays knows that even if the blogger filming him doesn’t ask a question, Shays is screwed.

What’s funny (I was the blogger he was not-answering) is that I spoke with his press secretary in advance, who asked me not to film from the table — basically that I could tape OR ask questions — so my camera was stowed for the entire event. And my question was just if he would vote to use inherent contempt if his committee’s subpoenas weren’t obeyed, which wouldn’t have been super interesting video no matter what he answered. He gave himself the black eye, and we just grabbed the video from the other sources. Plus, print journos in the room gave me their cards if I ever wanted to get a question answered on the record from the guy. Advantage: bloggers!

  182. Probus says:

If Shays broke the law or ethics rules his activities must be investigated by Congress. His comparison of democrats and republicans to Shiias and Sunnis is inaccurate. He is only trying to take attention away from his own possible violations of the law.
