The ethics of Philip Zelikow (updated).

The ethics of Philip Zelikow (updated).

Blogger Glenn Greenwald noted that Republican lobbyist Philip Zelikow had been making TV appearances calling for Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s ouster without disclosing the fact that he was being paid by Iyad Allawi to lobby for Maliki’s removal. Today, ABC News released a statement stating the Zelikow had not informed them of his conflict of interest. ABC acknowledged that Zelikow’s appearances were “sullied by the fact that he did not disclose his relationship with Barbour Griffith & Rogers.”

UPDATE: Greenwald also notes that Zelikow has been retained to do consulting work for the Bush administration specifically on Iraq policy.

UPDATE II: Laura Rozen, who studied under Zelikow, contacted him and received this assurance: “Zelikow, a former counselor to Secretary of State Rice, says he did not know about the Allawi contract with BGR at the time of the ABC interview, and did not learn of it until he started getting called by the media about it two days afterwards.”

Somehow I doubt ABC cares much about this. These are standard lobbyist “ethics” these days.

This supposed conflict of interest is nothing; psychotically, the misjudging radicals at TP are misbehaving as if they have a huge “smoking gun” by exposing this conflict of interest of Zelikow. The ABC e-mail (which even ignorant progs can read after clicking the link) actually said that the information provided by Zelikow reflects, accurately, the current view inside the State Dept. This means that regardless of the conflict of interest, ABC actually affirms the legitimacy of Zelikow’s position. What’s really galling is the double-standard that hypocritical progs tolerate. About 99.9% of journalists refuse to disclose that they’re nothing but paid shills and apologists for the Demoncratic Party, yet they all pretend they’re giving non-biased news and information. Progs are also shamed for defending Al-Maliki and doubting Allawis effectiveness because Maliki is the obstructionist as he can’t reach reconciliation with the Sunnis. For the progs to tolerate Maliki’s failure is indicative of their lust for a bloodier Iraq.

  23. Makarios Vacuums Mr P says:

The U.S. effort to install a democracy in Iraq within three to five years was a flawed strategy with little chance of succeeding, U.S. Rep. (R)Peter Hoekstra said Friday. He said he met with Sunni tribal chiefs who hold politically sway in Iraq, and concluded, ‘They are not looking for a county commission to tell them what to do.”

Guess the trolls will be attacking Hoekstra next. But Markarios knows more than the military and the congress. HAH!

You have been caught lying on the Foley thread. NOBODY READS YOUR CRAP. Thanks for making it so easy to ignore you. Daniel Crane is a REPUBLICAN congressman involved in the Stubbs incident you lying ass.

  29. gummitch says:

I actually give ABC some serious props for acknowledging this, especially given their usual lack of spine or cojones.

Either they’ve grown a pair (ha!) or the tide really is turning against the Bushies, much as it turned against Nixon.

I’ve been through all of this long enough to be pretty damn cynical, and yet I see this as a positive sign.

I don’t think he can help himself. Like Mr Pee, he’s got a form of Tourette’s, but in his case (and I use the old-fashioned generic pronoun) it results in these bursts of gibberish on virtually every thread. As I’ve written before, I think that the effort involved in creating them requires him to take a little nap before the next thread (and the next screaming cry for euthanasia) and he never comes back to the thread.

It’s actually a fascinating pathology, in a creepy, soul-destroying way.

Reminder: Complete B.S. from the CIA Informant Chalabi and the INC group (most famously from a defector codenamed “Curveball”) made its way into intelligence dossiers used to help convince the public in America and Britain of the need to go to war. “Curveball” – the brother of a top lieutenant of Chalabi – fed hundreds of pages of bogus “firsthand” descriptions of mobile biological weapons factories on wheels and rails.

  40. Probus says:

ABC News should have done a better job in finding out Zelikow’s motives in coming to the show. Replacing the leader in Iraq will do nothing to end the civil war. It will do nothing to facilitate political progress. Bush only wants Allawi because he is more of a puppet than Maliki who is more independent.

  41. Makarios says:

    Probus, shut the f*ck up!

  42. Probus says:

If Bush cared about democracy he would not remove Maliki. Instead he wants someone in Iraq who will only do what he says even if it is against the wishes of the Iraqi people.

  43. Makarios says:

Maliki is nothing but a terrorist aiding sh!teater. He is the pawn of Mucktard al-Sadist, and he is bad for Iraq.

    Maleleaky has to go!!!

  44. Probus says:

Maliki until a couple of months ago had Bush’s confidence. Bush doesn’t care about democracy. He only cares about his failed neo-conservative beliefs that have made America less safe.

  45. Makarios says:

Well, once the surge made it possible for him to show his true colors, we learned that Maliki was nothing but a puppet for Mucktardo al-Sadistic! Who cares about a couple of months ago, MALIKI HAS TO GO!!!!

  46. Probus says:

Allawi will fail just like Maliki because Bush refused to hold him accountable. Maliki’s failure is Bush’s fault.

  47. Doc Rock says:

Why are they so interested in Iraq’s oil? They positively ooze it themselves!

  48. Makarios says:

Maliki failed because he was stuck in his sandy ways. He needed to be open to the new way of doing things, AMERICAN STYLE, B!TCH!!!!

  49. Probus says:

If Bush cared about the Iraqi people he would let them make their own decisions. Instead he only cares about oil.

  50. Makarios says:

Bush cares so much about the Iraqi people that he is making the best decisions for them, since as of now, they are but backwards savages and do not know what is best!

  51. Probus says:

You make Bush sound like a dictator.

He was also on NPR’s All Things Considered this week punditing on Iraq – no mention that he was consulting, just a quick that he was a former advisor to Rice. I was angry at the time because they didn’t have any opposing view or follow up on some of the outrageous things he said.

  60. red sox sam says:

    Iraq needs a dictator.

The US needs to get rid of Manuel Antonio Noreiga because his jail term is ending.

Maybe the US can cut a deal and just send former Panamanian strongman Manuel Antonio Noriega to Iraq where he can bang machetes off of podiums and lead the Iraqi people with a mix or fear and intimidation.

Folks, please realize Zelikow’s corrupt history. He cowrote a book with Condi Rice in the 80s. As a Rice/Bush crony, Bush/Cheney chose him to be on the 911 “Commission”, where he just issued the party line.
After successfully blocking any real investigation into the 911 “attacks”, he was promptly rewarded by Rice when she gave him a deputy sect. of state position under her.

    Pretty nice, eh?

  66. Toss these losers says:

Wow, I didn’t think there was any way that Washington could piss off the Iraqis anymore than they already have. But I stand corrected!

Yeah, put a transparent puppet like Allawi in there and really watch the fireworks get going.

Incompetence with consistency is this Administration’s motto.

  67. AnotherKickToTheNuts says:

Please remind me again what it was we were supposed to “win” in Iraq. Or are we just there to “stay the course” so the “conservatives” can claim it was not Bush who “lost” the war. And you thought it was tough being a Republican in 2006 . . .

The right-wing propagandists are in full swing here.

Zelikow is simply another neo-con wishing hell and brimstone on our planet. His biggest scam is that he was the executive director of the 911 Commission,,,not those other guys. He controlled the whole investigation and manipulated information around the official conspiracy theory. Another no good!
