ThinkFast: August 24, 2007

Outgoing Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Peter Pace “is expected to advise President Bush to reduce the U.S. force in Iraq next year by almost half,” citing concerns by the Joint Chiefs that “keeping well in excess of 100,000 troops in Iraq through 2008 will severely strain the military.”

“The United States’ largest and costliest embassy, a heavily fortified compound in Baghdad with its own power plant and lighted softball field, is on track to be completed next month, on time and within budget.”

Escalation doubles number of internally displaced Iraqis. Recent studies “indicate that the total number of internally displaced Iraqis has more than doubled, to 1.1 million from 499,000,” since the escalation started in February.

Wan Kim, the head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division, announced that he is resigning. “Kim is set to join nearly a dozen other senior Justice Department officials and aides who have resigned this year.” He pursued causes favored by conservatives to the detriment of the Division’s traditional emphasis, such as protecting African-Americans from discrimination.

After long denying retirement rumors, Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) said yesterday he would not seek reelection. “Renzi has been under an ethical cloud ever since a family business was raided earlier this year by the FBI, which is investigating whether he used his federal office for personal gain.”

A Pentagon effort to reopen Iraqi factories “has largely failed because American retailers have shown little interest in buying products made in Iraq.” The enterprise is overseen by deputy undersecretary of defense Paul Brinkley, who is being investigated for engaging in public drunkenness, waste of funds, and sexual harassment.

Karl Rove’s “disastrous” legacy. ThinkProgress’s Amanda Terkel writes, “The one area in which Rove succeeded was the politicization of the government’s response to national tragedies.”

Lawyers for Jose Padilla, who was convicted last week on terrorism charges, disclosed this week that they had filed a civil lawsuit “seeking to hold former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and 59 other US officials responsible” for allegedly “abusive and unconstitutional tactics” used against Padilla while he was held “as an enemy combatant from 2002 to 2006.”

The world is facing an “unprecedented number of emerging diseases,” in part because of a “ballooning world population, intensive farming practices and changes in sexual behavior,” according to the World Health Organization.

And finally: A picture of French president Nicholas Sarkozy bare-chested, while vacationing in New Hampshire, has allegedly been airbrushed by a French magazine to remove the “unsightly bulges of fat around his waist.” The magazine, Paris Match, is run by a friend of Sarkozy’s. A presidential spokesman denied that Sarkozy instructed the magazine to edit the photograph: “We really are not that good at working with Photoshop.”

And I have a bridge to sell you. The last that was reported about the Embassy was that it was way over budget and shoddily built. Now we are fed the lie that it will come in under budget. The next thing they will tell us is that it is a model for all future embassy’s since it was so well built. Black is white, up is down, welcome to Bushzarro world.

I so agree with you. I have tried four times to post something, rearranging the text, taking things out, but to no avail. Also, every time I hit Post, TP clears my cookies and I have to re-enter my log-in information.

Really TP – I am a programmer and I could fix your problems for you in, maybe two days. Are you really willing to completely hose your site by ignoring all the problems people have posting to it?

I guess the cost savings of using slave labor helped in bringing it under budget. Now can we use those slaves to build a some statues of Bush in Baghdad? That would be appropriate.

So how do you sign up for the Baghdad co-sectarian softball league? Wooden bats only, Mr. Fleischer!

  12. missmolly says:

Well, it’s a lot easier to stay within budget when you use slave labor:

    http://thinkprogress.org/2007/07/26/slave-labor-used-to-contruct-us-embassy-in-baghdad/

Plus, since “budget” has been basically “blank check” for everything associated with Iraq, it would be practically impossible to go over budget, wouldn’t it?

Yes, this happens to me, too. I spend a fair amount of time and effort composing a post (as opposed to the troll-like technique of typing a few insults and hitting “post”), only to see it all disappear when I hit “Post – I agree” and all my info go to “null”.

Yet I’m still here. Guess I’m just a glutton for punishment.

When your computer screen is white, being it an empty Word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes, on average, 74 watts. When it is black it consumes only 59 watts. Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views. According to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with lower energy consumption, check it out.

President Bush’s recent remarks before the Veterans’ of Foreign Wars Group caused a few to raise their eyebrows. The President drew some parallels between the current situation in Iraq and the Vietnam War.

It’s not surprising that reactions to the comparison were mixed. There are those who agree with the President and those who don’t.

What a great opportunity this dialog affords us to look back. Fortunately, the Vietnam War was well-chronicled. We have primary sources. To be sure some could be called biased, a good adjective if you happen to disagree. But through these sources, we still may arrive at personal conclusions today.

I looked into some sources concurrent with the war in Vietnam, and I present for your consideration– Vietnam or Iraq?

I present this as a question, not a conclusion. Discerning viewers must decide for themselves. Whether one agrees with the President or not, a national dialog about our history as a nation is a good thing.

Yeah, frauds like those. One big difference between Dem voters & Rep voters is that Dems see weaknesses in their own party & call them out. billbobaggins, BnF, missmolly and others – this ongoing problem with TP and the way it handles comments is something that did not exist with the site originated — it occurred over time.
The events of the past 7 years have made me a skeptic of nearly everything – and although I have held out applying that skepticism to TP, I have to confess that I am harboring thoughts that they are doing this deliberately. The trolls usually get to post – at least they don’t complain about not doing so – but the regulars, the thoughtful ones, are subjected to the frustration of getting “bleeped.” Or as missmolly says “nulled.”
I haven’t figured the reason why TP chooses to let this site run amok, but the growing frustration among us regulars is forcing many to abandon ship. Certainly TP has the wherewithall to remedy this problem, so I don’t believe that it is out of their control. I have also written to the Center for American Progress (the mother ship) about this problem.
I miss the regular posts by those contributors who add so much to the site more than I resent the trolls who manage to de-rail so many good threads with their insults and inane comments.

I see that Rep. Renzi is adding his name to the ever-growing Repug Wall of Shame. The good people of AZ had the opportunity to vote him out in 06 when this issue was already on the table but they voted him back in anyway. Just like AK did to Stevens, OK to Imhoffe, etc.

Guess the American people get the government they deserve.

When you say “voted to keep us in”, what you mean to say is “voted to take us out but didnt have enough votes to break a filibuster” .

Dont you have a diaper to change?

Thanks for the info, Marie. I can only hope that TP will fix the problems and that adult posters with original thoughts will return and make this site great again.

I’m also hoping that TP will get some kind of registration system to eliminate namejacking, posting under multiple aliases a la Mr. Pee, and other troll maneuvers.

Especially if you do it with bad dubbing.

    upside00,

Renzi’s district is mostly Democratic because of the Navajo Reservation, but the rest are your typical not informed small town bunch, with a strong Mormon influence. AM stations with Savage and Rush and Fox News are the main sources of misinformation. Renzi published articles in local newspapers saying that it was all a witch hunt.

Sounds like the hunters have their witch.

IF THIS CASE LOSES IT MEAN BUSH CAN TORTURE YOU ALL

HE ALREADY WON HE CAN HOLD AMERICANS FOR YEARS

Really TP – I am a programmer and I could fix your problems for you in, maybe two days. Are you really willing to completely hose your site by ignoring all the problems people have posting to it?

And this is just left-wing libs trying to run a web site. Imagine having them try to run a nationwide health care system!

Huh??? From the technical problems of this website, you are extrapolating that liberals can’t run a nationwide health care system?

Following that logic, let’s claim that the Republicans aren’t capable of running the “No Child Left Behind” program because during the H.W. Bush administration, the Hubble telescope was launched with a faulty mirror.

Let’s not stop at comparing apples to oranges, let’s compare apples to giraffes!

I never could understand why you Rethugs think that if someone is not poor they can’t try to help the poor. If that’s the case, then no one in Congress can try to help the poor because none of them are poor.

I could care less where John Edwards lives or how he spends his money he has earned. I do care that he genuinely wants to help raise the standard of living for the people in our Country who work their butts off for very little reward.

You, on the other hand, care about the rich folks who have never worked a day in their lives and are living off their trust fund.

US already has a government-run healthcare system. It is called Medicare. It’s administrative costs are 2%. Private sector is 15-25%.

Consumer Reports says we would save $250 billion every year (administratively-alone) by switching to what every other developed country has—-universal, single-payer, government-run healthcare.

  98. Marie says:

Check out the article on Raw Story.com about Ted Nugent. It is too hateful and violent to reprint here. Where is the outrage?
If a Democrat were to do something like this …..Oh, wait…it’s repugs with a microphone who do this at every opportunity.

  99. Keith says:

And everyone would have healthcare. And there would be no deductibles and no co-pays and no pre-existing conditions. And there would be detal, optometric, and behavioral coverage.

  100. RUCerious says:

Ted Nugent is a washed up has been of a rocker. The Cat ain’t scratchin much any more, and the fever has subsided to a runny nose.

  101. Ted Nugent says:

“Obama, he’s a piece of sh*t, and I told him to suck on my machine gun,” Nugent said in front of a screaming crowd as he brandishes what appear to be two large assault rifles. He was referring to Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination and would become the first black man to occupy the Oval Office.

“Hey Hillary, you might want to ride one of these into the sunset you worthless b*tch,” Nugent said, brandishing his weapons.

He also went after Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), suggesting she, too, might like to “suck on my machine gun.” Nugent’s tirade against California’s other Democratic Senator, Diane Feinstein, is too garbled to transcribe, but one can hear Nugent call her a “wh*re.”

  102. RUCerious says:

Looks like the military is bailing out on Boosh as well.
Go ahead, chymp, install the draft and complete your task of destroying the repukelickin party for a generation.

  103. Ted Nugent says:

I went to my draft physical with my pants full of my p*ss and feces. I had them on for weeks. That’s how I got out of Nam. But I’m for others getting killed in Iraq.

After reading some of the quotes from this guy, I now think Ann Coulter is just Ted Nugent in drag.

  105. bilbobaggins says:

“Check out the article on Raw Story.com about Ted Nugent. It is too hateful and violent to reprint here. Where is the outrage?”

Imagine would would have happened if he had said this about Bush or Chaney. He would not have made it out of the venue before being arrested. The right thinks it is fine to issue death threats to the left (i.e. Ann Coulter).

So re-tard trolls, why is it OK for righties to threaten the lives of people on the left but it is not OK for people on the left to say anything bad about your President (he’s certainly not mine).

  106. missmolly says:

“The United States’ largest and costliest embassy, a heavily fortified compound in Baghdad with its own power plant and lighted softball field, is on track to be completed next month, on time and within budget.”

Why are we building this monstrosity when so much of Iraq is suffering from the effects of our invasion? To raise Baghdad property values by upgrading the “neighborhood”? To boost tourism in the area by creating a destination people will want to see?

I assume our NEXT building project will be a five-star resort in Darfur…

No, it is just TP. All the other liberal websites where I post handle it quite well. And most are very civil because they kick out anyone who is there just to fling feces on the wall. I wish that TP would take that track, but it is starting to look like what they are doing is intentional.

I still propose that we all abandon this site for at least a week. Then see if TP fixes things. If they do, then we will know that they really are a progressive website. If they don’t fix things, then we will know that they are really just another shill for the Bush Administration, which is what I am beginning to believe.

  108. m12 says:

INVERNESS, Fla. — The man convicted of kidnapping and raping 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford is scheduled to be sentenced today.

According to a recorded jailhouse conversation, John Couey expects to be sentenced to death.

A Miami jury convicted Couey of taking the girl from her bedroom to his nearby trailer in 2005, where he raped her and buried her alive. Her body was found about three weeks after she disappeared in a grave in Couey’s yard.

The same jury brushed aside pleas for mercy and a life sentence from defense lawyers. They claimed Couey is mentally retarded and suffers from chronic mental illness.

Jurors have recommended a death sentence.

    Excellent! Cheers all!

  109. Probus says:

Bush wants to stay in Iraq indefinitely which is why so much money and resources are being spent on this embassy. There will come a time when it will become impossible for us to stay in Iraq due to the violence of the civil war.

  110. Probus says:

Renzi is one more corrupt republican in a long list of republicans who have broken the law and broken the trust of the people who sent them to Washington. Hopefully democrats will be able to pick up his seat next November.
