Rep. Baird’s ‘real progress’ in Iraq.
On Friday, Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA), who recently returned from a trip to Iraq, wrote an op-ed in the Seattle Times arguing that withdrawal from Iraq “has the potential to turn the initial errors into an even greater problem just as success looks possible.” From the New York Times, an example of such “success“:
“That’s real progress,” Mr. Baird said, though he confessed he did not tell his wife about the region’s nickname, the triangle of death, and said the whole scene was a little surreal. “You have your flak jacket on, and your Kevlar helmet and you’re surrounded by guys with automatic weapons as you’re standing there, talking to the mayor. And you realize there’s a dusty old car next to you and you’re saying, ‘God, I hope that doesn’t blow up.’“

Then, of course, there’s the ridiculous term “Islamo-Fascism”. Fascism depends on Nationalism. The Mid-East doesn’t operate on Nationalism. No Nationalism=No Fascism.
Also, applying the term “surrender” to the Vietnam debacle, or any conceivable outcome in Iraq, is simply inaccurate. People who surrender are, generally, disarmed and/or held prisoner. Heck! Even if we wanted to surrender there’s isn’t anyone to receive it.

Absolutely true. I am scratching my head as to what could be going on in his head.
Baird even starts his op-ed piece with “The invasion of Iraq may be one of the worst foreign-policy mistakes in the history of our nation.”
Why would anyone under any circumstance stick to what is obviously an utterly failed policy is beyond me. If the current course has failed to produce any observable improvement in Iraq in four years, it is anyone’s guess how a relatively small “surge” can accomplish it.
Maybe Baird simply wants to believe, desperately, that this “surge” will succeed -however he chooses to define “success”. He is in for a big disappointment, methinks.

1 — Since most people in this country haven’t sacrificed anything yet(in fact, the only change for the extremely wealthy has been to figure out what to do with the windfall from their outsized tax cuts), the least Congress and Bush could do is restore December, 2000 tax rates.
2 — Rather than hiding the financial costs of the war by keeping it off-budget and borrowing money the finance it, the Administration should show that they aren’t complete cowards and adopt a “pay-as-you-go plan.” If restoring tax rates to pre-January, 2001 levels isn’t enough to cover the costs of the war, then a bill (with the purpose clearly marked on it) can be mailed to all tax payers for their proportional share of the costs so we don’t keep adding to our national debt. For all the crying about the “death tax”, where is the concern about the “birth tax”, since every child who is born in this country inherits a debt of nearly $30,000 before they even take their first breath?
3 — In addition, unless the United States is in Iraq purely for its own interests (which should be clearly articulated if that’s the case), then why not arrange for another election in Iraq, financed by the United States, and run by a neutral international agency? Let’s allow the Iraqi people an “up or down vote.” If the majority vote for the U.S. to stay, then maintain the status quo. However, if they vote for the U. S. to leave, then this country will honor their wishes as expeditiously as possible.

2. A change in the Tactics and Strategy employed by the troops.
The number of troops is Unsustainable. In April, the number of troops will be reduced because recruiting and training goals have not been met. Not enough people are volunteering for this all volunteer military.
Almost everyone agrees that the change in Tactics makes sense. Gen. Petraeus has seen what we were doing wrong ( for FOUR YEARS) and has taken steps to fix it. In my opinion ,i f Petreaus and Defense Sec. Gates had been in charge of war planning from the beginning, we would not be in as big a mess as we are now.
The question now is…is it too little too late. A strategy for democracy ,with the mistreated Shiites in the Majority, seems flawed from the start.

The problem is that the smackdowns & troll responses go through like butter while the content gets stopped. So you end up with long threads of insults like this one. It would make more sense to ban the trolls, or at a minimum ignore them, remove their garbage & have smaller threads with actual on-topic conversations. As it is now it’s not worth stating/supporting an opinion.
btw, ever notice how on this site the initial article is usually a supported statement on something that has happened… the libs respond either favorably regarding that topic or add more links/support to what is being said, while the reps simply attack the messenger(s). Rather then mount an argument & support it they just attack those that disagree with them. That’s the first sign of being on the losing end of an issue.

Since Iraq is just slightly larger in land area than California, and has a slightly larger population than Texas, then perhaps an extended layover at LAX or DFW would be sufficient for the frustrated traveler to submit a definitive, detailed statement about the current conditions of that entire state.
The only difference is, you could venture out into the countryside on your own in either state and have a reasonably good chance of returning alive.

August 26th, 2007 at 1:52 pmBrian Baird is my rep and usually is right on target. He’s having town meetings tonight and tomorrow. I’m unable to attend tonight so will be traveling down the road to one tomorrow.
I’ll be pointing out to him that the surge is only working where the ethnic cleansing has already been successful such as Bagdad, previously 65% Sunni, now 75% Shia. I’ll also ask him where he’s planning on getting the troops and if he’ll call for a draft.
How much longer can we surge? Its a question he needs to answer. General Pace says no longer, we don’t have the troops.
