‘Spectacular attack’ expected in Iraq in coming weeks.»

Today, the Washington Post reports that despite political pressure, the Bush administration “hopes to keep in place its existing military strategy and troop levels there after the mid-September report” by the White House. Several administration officials said that they “expect the insurgents to attempt a spectacular attack in the next several weeks.”

UPDATE: The NY Times reports, however, “administration officials said Mr. Bush was acutely aware that some reduction next year would be required, and they said he planned to use next month’s debate to outline a plan for gradual troop reductions.”

  10. doro Says:

500+ dead Yesidi wasn’t spectacular??? Of course the “insurgents” will try to influence public opinion and politics in the US by letting as much blood as possible. But this is just another argument for immediate redeployment. Without US troops in Iraq, things would most probably calm down. Al-Qaeda in Iraq( horrible name, sounds like a branch of McD’s) is hated by the Iraqis. But Iraqis hate US troops even more. Without your soldiers there wouldn’t be that twisted rationale for terror, that keeps the insurgent/terrorist whatever doing their attacks.

If the US troops leave Iraq, your soldiers would be out of harm’s way and the Iraqis would be safer.

Now the White House is trying to spin things before they happen. Any major attack now will be discounted and chalked up to an attempt to thwart the Chimp’s iron will. It will be spun as a last act of desperation and a sign that the insurgents are losing.

    Bush cabinet meeting:

Chimp: what if things start getting worse towards the end of summer?

Cheney: we’ll just spin it as a sign that we’re winning and the surge is working.

Gee, big attack in the next few weeks — is that kind of like the attack on Washington that was going to happen that Trent Lott suggested every Congressman would want to get out of DC for, right before Bush pushed for his unconstitutional spy bill?

You mean cooperating and picking up their freedom like the native americans did? If you want to look for historical precedence, look at your own past. I’ll bet that Iraqis don’t want the same fate. Why you believe that the US was justified in their actions amazes me and more so that you don’t understand the Iraqis reaction. How is that bliss going for you anyway ’cause your ignorance is clear.

  54. bilbogaggins Says:

“#Never Blame Iraqis for choosing to become the insurgency, rather than cooperating and picking up their freedom.”

You call being occupied and subjugated by another country freedom? You call having another country try to steal the one natural resource you need to support your country freedom? Well the Iraqi’s don’t consider that to be freedom and that is why the insurgency exists.

Would you tolerate China occupying the USA and subjugating us? Or would you fight back and try to drive China out of our country?

Of course, if the troops had been in sufficient numbers, and given the orders necessary to secure the ammo dumps, hospitals, water and electrical infrastructure, the Bush administration might have been able to pull this off — always assuming the Kurds didn’t use the invasion as a long-desired excuse to pull out of “Iraq” and the Shiites didn’t use the invasion as an opportunity to finally get some of the wealth and power that they’d been denied since the Ottomans and the Sunnis were willing to simply give up all their advantages . . . it might have worked.

So we allowed the Bushies to do what they wanted, we believed what they told us, and as along as another major attack does not happen on our soil, we are willing and eager to turn a blind eye to the thousands of troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians that have been killed.

We need more time….this is a delicate balancing act. Where on one hand Bushco try and foster the creation of a ‘form of government’ that is created from the bottom-up (starting on the provincial/tribal level) while desperately trying to maintain a national governing ’structure’ that will remain relevant and operational, but at the same time not dominating the political landscape?

All the while being vigilant for that ‘key’ time period where both the national and local stratum can ‘merge’ into the much-vaunted ‘Iraqi style democracy’. While simultaneously managing the conflict between Sunni and Shiite which permeate and affect the operation and growth of the national governing structure b/c of the legitimate self-interest both parties have if the proverbial sh*t hits the fan and uncontrollable civil war breaks out, thereby rendering the whole process moot anyway. It tenuous, but better than the alternative at this point.

Unfortunately during all of this during all of this Bushco decides to just tell the citizenry a complete fallacy in terms of what’s going on, their ‘actual’ foreign policy being implemented and in order to continue having the support of the electorate for their stated policy (surge, clear hold…, stay the course etc) lie, obfuscate and spin to buy the public policy the time to allow their true policy time to actually run its course from the bottom up….apparently.

I love your outrage and summary!

However, we will not have a draft under GW Botch. It will not pass the Congress without a grass-roots fight and Botch will veto anything that passes because his useless daughters would have to serve if all things in the draft are fair.

In fact, the only fair draft is the Israeli model where EVERONE must serve. No exceptions and no exemptions. The rich can’t opt out, the connected can’t opt out, the religious can’t opt out, the infirm can’t opt out, etc. Everyone can do something for their country. Right?

Or, we can go back to the insidious system of the past where only the poor or unlucky where forced to serve.

  90. Badger Says:
