U.S. soldiers disdainful of WH ‘happy talk’ on Iraq.

Soldiers in Iraq “are increasingly disdainful of the happy talk that they say commanders on the ground and White House officials are using in their discussions about the war” and “becoming vocal about their frustration over longer deployments and a taxing mission.” The LA Times writes:

Some say two wars are being fought here: the one the enlisted men see, and the one that senior officers and politicians want the world to see.

“I don’t see any progress. Just us getting killed,” said Spc. Yvenson Tertulien, one of those in the dining hall in Yousifiya, 10 miles south of Baghdad, as Bush’s speech aired last month. “I don’t want to be here anymore.” [...]

The signs of frustration and of flagging morale are unmistakable, including blunt comments, online rants and the findings of surveys on military morale and suicides.

Sometimes the signs are to be found even in latrines. In the stalls at Baghdad’s Camp Liberty, someone had posted Army help cards listing “nine signs of suicide.” On one card, seven of the boxes had been checked.

As USUAL, Toilet Paper misrepresents the point of even millitary-hating, far-left piecs of propaganda disguised as articles in the LAT (continually dropping in readership exactly due to such articles of military demoralization). In the article (if the intellectually lazy sheeple who call themselves progtards would even read it!), the LAT bastard actually spoke to only three or four soldiers, only one of whom directly stated what libtarded defeatists wanted to hear: that the war has no progress. Mentally ill progressives assume this lone serviceman speaks for the whole 160000 US soldiers in Iraq at the moment, but that’s as absurd as progressives thinking they have a monopoly on the truth. In order for this article to be balanced, the LAT writer would’ve to take a much broader sample accurately reflecting the views of the 160000 soldiers. He didn’t, of course, because the vast majority would have affirmed that they believe in Bush’s surge since it was working.

well, that’s not true. They would be in much better spirits if they weren’t being used to enrich Dick Cheney at the expense of their lives and freedom. The last time I checked, the disastrous Iraq War was started by the Republican-led Bush administration and its allies in Congress. And I can’t seem to recall any Republicans saying, “Oops, sorry. The need for soldiers to speak out against the positive spin on this is very telling in deed. bush may not ‘read the polls’ or care what the average citizen has to say, but he most assuredly needs to heed the words of those in the midst of fighting this mess (the troops) .

  31. barfly says:

Sorry to wander off-topic, but, this all can be laid at Reagan’s (and Walsh’s) feet.

If Walsh had held Reagan responsible for his actions, there would have been an inpeachment investigation so rigorous that we would have found out if Bush Sr. had in fact been “out of the loop,” or if he had been more involved than he claimed. In either case, he would have been seriously damaged in the ensuing media feeding frenzy, Dukakis would have used any revealed involvement of Bush Sr. as political ammo, and the election would have then been about the competing images of Willie Horton vs. Arming Terrorists for Political Gain. If Bush Sr. hadn’t won, we wouldn’t have told Saddam that his invasion of Kuwait was OK, and he wouldn’t have invaded, knowing the Americans wouldn’t allow him to invade without paying a huge price. No invasion of Kuwait, no UN sanctions to violate, no connection to the terrorists. And we wouldn’t be stuck in a quagmire.

It’s that when anyone claiming to have served to bolster an argument on the Internet, is just trying to sell snakeoil. I could claim to be a brain surgeon, and for a time I will be able to pull it off, with a little help from google – but in the end, it will be revealed. The same goes for claims of military service. Any “experiences” one can lay claim to is automatically suspect, as it cannot be proven conclusively – so why bring it into the debate, if you can’t prove it? It’s a weal attempt to steamroll others with, in essence, nothing. So I’m not going to thank you for your service – because you cannot prove it.

It is clear to me that:

    1: You have never served.

2: That you confuse opposition to your president, who is a total failure on several fronts, with opposition to the military. The military serves, whoever is in power. It swears an oath to the constitution, not the sitting president. You might not respect this, but I for one do as that covenent, that sacrifice whereby the military is supposed to remain neutral in politics, means that America remains free of a dictatorship.

Of course, keeping America free of a dictatorship is strikingly low on the average Republican troll’s agenda, given your reaction to secret rendition, illegal wiretaps, and the use of torture by your government.

    Comment by Blame Bush — August 25, 2007 @ 3:09 pm

that’s right, military service is an American tradition, even though the founders didn’t want it, and knew what kind of abuses it would lead to. Now, perhaps kenny served in Iraq or Afghanistan, and wants me to thank him, but I don’t thank knee-jerk gung-ho reactionaries who jump when a deserter and his 5-deferment puppetmaster allow an enemy to attack, do nothing about it, and then invade the wrong country for oil profits. Nobody should volunteer for the militay when Republicans are in office; it leads to death and destruction to enrich a few fatcats. America was in no danger from Saddam or iraq, none whatsoever, and that’s been proven time and again since the shower of lies turned into a storm of crap. Supporting the troops means letting them live and see their families again, now. Anything else is supporting Bush’s treason.

I’m confused. Are we arguing something? While your point about Wayne’s service in cogent, the larger point I was making was about the unproveability of any claims of military service to make a point on the internet. And it isn’t necessary for a well-crafted assertion, made with the three most effective debate tactics: acknowledgment, accomodation, and rebuttal. Empirical assertions are subjective, and can be rebutted by other’s experiences to the contrary.

Re: WMDs, priorities & objectives haven’t changed. It’s just that the lies of GWB/Cheney have been displayed to the world so the GWB administration had to change the justification for their illegal war. It became “Iraq’s ties to al Qaeda”. That was disproven as well but still hoisted up the flagpole by GWB & Cheney each week. They have decided that lies are just as good as the truth, even better when the truth isn’t going to support your actions. And the funny thing is the Rep voters know that they’re being lied to. They want to be lied to because it makes it easier to support these criminals. So they buy into the lies to absolve themselves of blame for the deaths going on out of their sight. The parallel between the American Republican public and the people of Nazi Germany is astoundingly similar. I’m thinking there will be decades of apologies & many movies made trying to explain how a country bought into a criminal regime.

Well, that’s how the Founders felt as well. They knew full well that a standing military would eat up valuable resources, and that the weak-minded psychopaths like George Bush would come along and use it as a toy, or a substitute penis, if you will. Anybody who has evolved into a full human being is anti-military, although aware of the dangers around us. We could easily take care of our citizenry in much more humane fashion, and have a land of bounty and beauty if we spent 10% of what we do on the military currently, and still be strong enough to take care of any real threat. Now, instead, we spend more than most all the rest of the world combined, and then we lose wars left and right. This is because the right is less evolved, less human, less intelligent and less courageous than the left. They live in a fake past where everything was great for the top 2%, and who cares about the other 98%? History shows that they lose their heads, their power and their fortunes whenver they overeach, and it’s going to happen again. If we don’t destroy the GOP, they will destroy America. That’s just a sad fact.

So charitable of you. Actually, if you enjoy an income, you must pay taxes on them. What do you think this is, a Holiday Inn?

Oh, and there’s a difference between America and it’s Government. It’s the job for this democrat majority to get off it’s fat a*ss and do something for America, like, you know, helping us defeat Islamofacism.

I get it. You’re working on your stand-up routine. You want to be the next Dennis Miller. Don’t quit your day job, if you have one.

  164. Mutt Wrongknee says:

I dont hate any of those things you listed Markarios. What I dislike is hypocrites, child predators, pedophiles and perverts. Republican anti-abortion activist Neal Horsley admitted to having
sex with a mule. Like this friend, oops, team mate of yours.

    Comment by Blame Bush — August 25, 2007 @ 4:13 pm
As if the Democrats have funded Bushs off the books supplements.
And besides, you GOP types should have thought about the ramifications of funding these Islamofascists when they were GOP Freedom Fighters

  165. barfly says:

“like, you know, helping us defeat Islamofacism.”

    Comment by Blame Bush

Well since Islamofacism is a fiction, perhaps we could get The Legion of Superheroes, or the X-men to fight them?

We will simply talk past the trolls – the attraction they have for TP must be because TP does not ban idiots, morons and imbeciles.

This thread makes me very sad. Democrats want the soldiers to come home, but war hawks want to keep the battle going despite the agonizing frustration and continuously rising death toll.
My heart goes out to those soldiers who find themselves trapped in Iraq.
As for the war hawks, may they join the trolls here and go to hell, the sooner the better.

It is like stepping over animal feces on a trail, just have to watch where you step.

And it is only one troll here today, mr. p, in all his demented personalities.

And to your point about the tropps, the Repugs have never shown any sense of humanity to our troops, the rest of the US citizens or to the world. And it is getting worse!!

  179. Probus says:

This war has had a very heavy toll on our troops. The extended deployments which have never happened before put a very high burden on them. Bush is forcing our troops to fight a war they can no longer win militarily. Increasing the number of troops will do nothing to effect political progress. The high rates of suicide and PTSD which is underreported indicate our soldiers are paying a heavy price for a failed policy.

  180. Probus says:

Bush and the GOP must do right by our troops and tell the truth about the failure of the surge to effect any political progress.

  181. Marie says:

Yes, exactly. And intelligent people, even people who used to vote Republican, are coming to understand that opposing the war and supporting the troops are one and the same.

It is time for the low life trolls who are left in their mommies basment pretending to be aremchair heros to get their scrawny asses to the recruiter and put their kildee asses on the line. Their heros, Dubya and Shooter are cowards and they are the same class of worthless crap. Get the hell off this board, you are doing nothing to change any thinking 82%ers mind, you low life, knuckle dragging, bottom feeding 28%ers. I am a veteran and you know nothing of what the guys under fire think of the war. You are repeating lies of cowards on the reichwing. Go to hell, morons.

  197. loretta says:

The worst part of this is that I saw an interview with an embedded reporter on Bill Maher’s show the other night–and a large percentage of our enlisted men & women there STILL THINK THAT IRAQ HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE WORLD TRADE CENTER DISASTER.
They are continuing to be fed the propaganda that we rejected years ago….these are not our best & brightest–these are young, naiive US citizens who NEED OUR PROTECTION!

  198. Jim says:

    Huh?

  199. Terrible says:

Why does it always seem that the wing-nut trolls have never in their lives spoken with service members, veterans or their families? Oh yeah that’s right, it’s because they’re all rethug loyalist elitists that dodged ever serving their country.

  200. Bananaphone says:

Posters like Blame Bush remind me of a scab: If you don’t stop picking it, it never goes away. Stop feeding the troll. You’re never going to convince him of anything.

We need to bring our troops home. This war is the biggest lie this administration has ever perpetuated, and they’ve told some whoppers. Look at what we’ve become! We’re abusing our troops, we’re sodomizing other human beings in Guantanimo, we’re even torturing our own military personnel when they blow the whistle on corruption from American companies embezzling millions of dollars from Iraqi reconstruction contracts. Al Qaeda is just as strong now as they were on 9-11 and the new recruits are pouring in.

And for God’s sake, we need to stop watching Fox News!

  201. Spud says:

    Ron Paul 2008.

Just Come Home, and End the Middle East Empire

(Hint: We supported Osama, Hussein, and the Shaw not too long ago. We don’t give a shit about democracy over there. Just look at Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.)
