Claiming He Failed ‘Reporting 101,’ Wallace Attacks Moyers To Defend Rove

On Friday August 17, PBS’s Bill Moyers criticized Karl Rove for cynically invoking God and Christianity for political purposes while telling others that he is an agnostic, calling him “a skeptic, a secular manipulator.”

Two days later, when Rove appeared on Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace asked him to take on Moyers’ criticism. “I’m a Christian. I go to church. I’m an Episcopalian,” responded Rove. “You know, Mr. Moyers ought to do a little bit better research before he does another drive-by slander.”

Earlier this week, Moyers argued that Wallace shouldn’t have taken Rove’s “every word as gospel,” but instead, should have challenged Rove’s assertion with other sources who report that he is an agnostic. On Fox News Sunday this morning, Wallace responded to Moyers’ rebuke, saying Moyers failed to do “reporting 101″:

Well, to save on postage, Bill, here’s my response. If you want to find out about someone’s religious beliefs, a good first step might be to ask him. If you had talked to Rove as I did, you would have found out he reads a devotional every day and the biggest charitable contribution he ever made was to his church. Of course, you never called Rove. That’s reporting 101, but it would have gotten in the way of a tasty story line about a non-believer flimflamming the Christian right. I guess, Bill, reporting is easier when you don’t worry about the facts.

Watch it:

While taking Rove’s “word as gospel,” Wallace completely disregards the numerous contradictory reports that justify Moyers’ claims:

1) “The White House will miss his indubitable political acumen. What other agnostic could have mobilized hundreds of thousands of conservative Christians behind a political banner?” – San Antonio Express News, [8/14/07]

2) “I could be wrong here, but I distinctly recall conversations with Rove friends who’ve told me that his struggles with faith did not lead him to Jesus Christ. Yet he knew and understood how to interact with (and manipulate, at times) the standard-bearers of the evangelical Right and the Catholic conservative intellectual elite…..” – The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder, [8/13/07]

3) “[Rove] told his friend Bill Israel years ago that he was agnostic and that ‘he wished he could believe, but he cannot.’” – James Moore, co-author of Rove bio, Bush’s Brain, [8/13/07]

4) “Rove once told a colleague that he had no religious affiliation and was ‘not a Christian.’” – James Moore and Wayne Slater in Bush’s Brain: How Karl Rove Made George W. Bush Presidential.

Additionally, journalist Christopher Hitchens has said he’s learned that “Karl Rove is not a believer.”

Moyers has not said whether he attempted to contact Rove. Still, there is a solid basis for his claims. Wallace never challenged Rove with any of the contradictory accounts of his faith, instead just blindly accepting what he said. As any reporter knows, healthy skepticism is also part of “reporting 101.”

Transcript:

CHRIS WALLACE: Time for some mail, one letter from liberal commentator Bill Moyers. You may remember in my interview with Karl Rove last Sunday, I asked him about a Moyers statement that Rove is an agnostic who manipulated the Christian right for political gain. Moyers quotes he ought to do better research. Bill Moyers sent me this letter which he posted on his website. He quoted four print stories for his contention that Rove is agnostic. None of which offer any proof other than what Rove supposedly told colleagues over the years. Moyers wrote this:

BILL MOYERS: Obviously, Rove wanted to blow smoke because his version of reality is undermined by his own previous statements and by the reporting and analysis of journalists who have done their home work and don’t take his every word as gospel — no pun intended.

CHRIS WALLACE: Well, to save on postage, Bill, here’s my response.

  5. Brassmask says:

Moyers’ production company, Public Affairs Television, gets paid by PBS, but it is unclear how much since PBS will not say. In return for the compensation, he does a weekly commentary program and some documentaries.

But here’s the rub, according to an article by Stephen Hayes in “The Weekly Standard,” Moyers owns the documentaries, and after they are broadcast on PBS, he sells the videocassettes, keeping the proceeds. So, in effect, you and I are partially funding Bill’s TV projects, which he is personally profiting from. Do you have a problem with that? I do.

Well, you are the one who works for Fox “News”, Chris. You should know how easy it is to “report” when you have little or no use for facts.

That accusation, coming from you, almost sounds like a bad joke.

You cannot win a debate with a man like Rove arguing over this issue.
Not because he is right or wrong, but because he is accustomed to inject politics in every word he uses…Whether Moyer right or wrong,Rove is not going to say or admit on a major television network that he was ‘agnostic’.

He will argue with Moyer ’till the end of time…because he is a political strategist..and he knows how to play the media very well. Playing the media well is an asset, not just to Rove, but all these so called political strategists.

I agree that you won’t win in a debate with Rove, but only because of the formats in which he agrees to do it. I do not believe, for example, that you will ever get him for an unlimited amount of time to sit and pry at him until you eventually get him to admit somethign he didn’t want to admit. You’re not going to get him for three hours so you can air an eight-minute segment. He would never allow that, because he knows how such an interview could get manipulated. But, go on a talk-show where you’re there for seven or eight minutes to fill six-and-a-half or seven minutes, and you can stall and brush off what you don’t want to slip on. Rove may have been raised as an Episcopalian, but that doesn’t mean he still is one today. And if he does go to church, I’m sure it’s with the president.

We should all stop posting until TP gets this posting problem fixed. Let the trolls chew on each other; if that’s what TP wants (which seems apparent, since they haven’t fixed it after months of complaints). We should let the threads get choked with troll ad hominems until TP fixes it for real.

  19. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Yeah. Matt. I want to hear what Rose Tyler has to say! Can anybody at TP explain why our name fields go null all the time and we lose posts for no reason? It’s puts your site on the “undesireable list” when that kind of thing continues to happen. Do you even know WHY it happens? Or are we just going to keep being asked for one more Friedman Unit to see improvement?

Karl Rove is the perfect example for the word hypocrite.
It isn’t possible to compare the journalistic skills of Bill Moyers and those on Fox Noise because Moyers is the only one in this discussion who has any. He is the only person in this discussion with any intelligence, credibility and character.

  22. VerbalKint says:

So a Fox News hack criticizes one of the greatest journalists of our time. What a pathetic loser.

  23. BlueArkansas says:

I seem to remember a call for name/alias registration. Would that not prove useful for everyone? Those of us loyal to this site, who bring substance to the dialogue would certainly prefer it, and perhaps the obstructionist trolls cowering behind multiple names would search for greener pastures elsewhere. Those with authentic disagreement and a civil tongue would, I suspect, have no objection to registration.

I submit that the need for registration is more urgent than ever. Please consider it, TP.

  24. JG says:

Actually, it is a tossup between Karl Rove and George Bush who is the better example of the word “Hypocrite”. They both take it to a new, much higher level.

So hes agnostic. I mean u dont have to be einstein to maintain this.

  32. Bodhittsatva says:

Rove probably selected the “religious cover” of Epsicopalian http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Episcopal_Church_in_the_United_States_of_America
since it meshes so cleanly with a human supreme just like the Unitary Executive.
Bush as potentate is what Rove wants. So, Episcopalian is the closest thing. Maybe someone should ask Rove to take the Oath of citizenship for the U.S.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oath_of_citizenship_%28United_States%29
“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.”

  33. JG says:

I loved hearing Max Cleland on CNN this morning respond to something that Karl Rove had said by saying he knew Rove was lying because ‘his lips were moving’ with a big smile on his face. It was priceless. There was a big pause and Blitzer asked again if he wanted to respond further and Cleland said no, he didn’t need to say more.

  35. Lesly says:

Moyers has not said whether he attempted to contact Rove. Still, there is still a solid basis for his claims.

The second part doesn’t matter. You should always contact sources, especially the subject of your paper/show. Human sources trump second hand information any day. Unless Moyers was speaking about these articles he should’ve called Rove.

  36. Gregor Samsa says:

orchestrate the smearing of war heros to win an election
put out the welcome mat at the White House door for male whores

…and be a believer in anything except power and money.

    Comment by Lesly — August 26, 2007 @ 1:20 pm

Rove has made public statements as to his religiosity, no contact was needed. Moyers was making a clean journalistic summation from the OTHER sources, no need to re-hash what Rove has lied to already. The point is that Rove is out of the equation, now we need objective measures of religiosity, not more of Rove’s lies.

  40. Dave C says:

  50. VerbalKint says:

Brassmask, your time is over. I suggest you start getting used to it. Karl Rove has caused enormous damage to the longterm prospects of the Republican party. You can spew all the propaganda and lies you want here and it won’t make any difference. Your party won’t be protecting Rove after the devastation of the GOP in the coming elections. Rove will be a persona non grata, and the chances of him going to prison are high. I have no doubt whatsoever that many decent conservative Republicans working at DOJ are biding their time to reestablish the rule of law with a vengeance, and they will be gunning for Rove’s head when the Bush crime family loses control.

By the way, Stephen Hayes and the rest of the gang at The Weekly Standard are psychotic nuts and sociopathic liars.

  74. Dave C says:

If you accept the premise that O’Reilly and Wallace use lies, half-truths, innuendo and rhetoric then you wouldn’t ask the question of why Moyers won’t face them. Why would he? What credibility do they have? And since they have none there’s no reason to meet them. The record has been set straight, they are oblivious to facts & truth & would be in any meeting. O’Reilly will boldly lie about things he said the day before, even when confronted with the lies. To meet with know liars is to act as if their words have meaning.

Can you imagine if this kind of thing happened at Fox? If every time Hannity, O’Reilly, Wallace said something that was less then correct were called on it by Fox there would be more time spent backtracking then they spend on the air. You should admire PBS for having an Ombudsman who critiques what PBS airs.

There is a cardiac rhythm that is called A-Fib which is characterized by irregular irregularity, the method employed to diagnose it is to rule out all other possibilities. The current administration is no different, they are consistently inconsistent and cannot be nailed down because other possibilities cannot be eliminated, they rule from the murk, and that is the intention.

  80. Nunyabiz says:

Why contact someone (Rove) that you know for an absolute fact is going to look you right in the eyes and LIE?

The only way to acquire anything resembling truth about such a criminal is from several other sources.

  81. Tom says:

Isn’t that cute? Little Chris Wallace, thinking he’s a — wait for it! — journalist! Heh heh. Beating those little hands in their air railing against one of the great ones. Kissing that flabby pasty horse patoot, front AND back, of Unca Karl! Look at meeee! He says. I AM TOO a journalist! Yes I am! heh heh.

  82. Zed Lefflin says:

If you accept the premise that O’Reilly and Wallace use lies, half-truths, innuendo and rhetoric then you wouldn’t ask the question of why Moyer’s won’t face them. Why would he? What credibility do they have? And since they have none there’s no reason to meet them. Comment by Dave C — August 26, 2007 @ 2:48 pm

SINCE MOYER’S WOULD NOT APPEAR ON THE FACTOR O’REILLY SENT HIS PRODUCER TO FIND HIM…..HE WAS AMBUSHED IN A PARKING LOT AND ASK WHY HE WOULD NOT APPEAR ON “THE FACTOR” TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT……………..BUT YOU WOULD NOT KNOW THAT BECAUSE YOU WERE HERE ENGAGING IN “INCESTUOUS AMPLIFICATION”.

  84. Arn Gunnutes says:

Well, at least you ADMIT that O’Reilly, Wallace and Rove have NO BALLS.

Better yet, if you want DEBATE, have the DEBATE in a NEUTRAL forum, certainly not on Fox PROPAGANDA, where they can then EDIT the content.

And didn’t O’Reilly RANT how the NYT didn’t put the JFK “terror plot” on the front page, while FOLDING THE NEWSPAPER, thus HIDING the article that he said they REFUSED to print on Page One???

    Yup…

I guess you just OVERLOOK the TREASON of Rove, Bush, etc…

  94. Boris Resnick says:

Under Powell’s board of directors, Moyers had all his funding cut by PBS and he left NOW for two years. Today, his programs are entirely paid for by himself and the support of private funders. PBS or NPR contribute not a dime to his program other than broadcasting it. That is why he gets the profits, just like a good capitalist should.

Yeah..HillarywhackedVince…you know a lot. Did you know that Geo. Bush’s grandfather helped fund Hitler’s armament build up until the US government took his bank away? Did you know that Rove and his boys are part of a vast conspiracy to have gays take over the GOP? I mean, its all in black and white. Look at the headlines. And that male prostitute that Rove approved for press conferences!!! Drudge is gay, too, I read on the internet so I know its true. And so is Dick Cheney’s daughter. I am kinda suspicious of Rove’s relationship with number one, but I dont worry about it.

Remember those words the next time a Democrat is called to testify under oath. Using that logic no one would ever testify since no one would ever admit guilt.

  100. David Steele says:

    Chris Wallace writes:
‘Well, to save on postage, Bill, here’s my response. If you want to find out about someone’s religious beliefs, a good first step might be to ask him. If you had talked to Rove as I did, you would have found out he reads a devotional every day and the biggest charitable contribution he ever made was to his church.’

Chris Wallace’s lazy, unforgivable “journalism” reminds me of when Greg Palast tried to get CBS to help investigate GOP institutional voter fraud in Florida’s 2000 election:

‘“The next day I received a call from the (CBS) producer, who said, “I’m sorry, but your story didn’t hold up.” Well, how did the multibillion-dollar CBS network determine this? Why, “we called Jeb Bush’s office.” Oh. And that was it.”’

Chris Wallace: Just another in a long string of highly paid Corporate Media propaganda shills for the morally bankrupt Republican Party.

  102. scurvybro says:

Another fundamental lesson of Journalism 101 used to be not simply accepting a source’s assertions at face value, but checking with independent, third-party sources to confirm. Sadly, Chris Wallace is hardly the only “journalist” who has abandoned this principle. Wallace felt comfortable and righteous in expressing his pathetic indignation because his behavior is not an aberration in the news media. On the contrary, it’s the norm.

  103. Texas Democrat says:

First off good effort at English, secondly O.K. he was wrong….and? It’s difficult finding the truth among constant contradictions.

  104. bilbogaggins says:

Wallace is from the school of if it is said by a Rethug, it must be true and if it is said by a Democrat, it can’t be true. He drank the kool-aid a long time ago.

Just because Karl Rove told him he is religious, doesn’t necessarily make it true. He should have asked Rove which church he attends and how often. That is “reporting 101″.

  105. Dave C says:

When was the last time you allowed yourself to be deposed for a crime you did not commit OR was never charged AND against the advice of you attorney?

Ha ha ha. If you read the logic of this statement again it literally smacks you in the face. What Zed Lefflin is suggesting is that someone would only allow themself to testify under oath if they were guilty. Ha ha ha. That’s how we can determine guilty/innocence in the future… those that testify under oath are clearly guilty since the innocent ones will refuse.

I thought the Republican mantra was the opposite… if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear from eavesdropping/search/seizure/stuff like that. Why doesn’t that apply to Rove et al?

  107. lonesomerobot says:

the real joke here is that chris wallace is trading on his father’s name, even though he’s a legacy entrant into traditional media via his step father bill leonard, the eventual president of cbs news (leonard got him his first job as an assistant to walter kronkite).

must be nice to get a high profile slot like that when you’re just starting out in such a competitive field.

conversely, moyers worked his way up as a cub reporter.

    finally,
Treason is aiding the enemy in war and he should be killed for it.

and cowardice is making hilarious and idiotic threats on a comments section of a blog.

Thanks to Moyers, I’ve doubled my annual pledge to PBS and look forward to the Journal every Friday to learn more about my country in an hour than I could get from six years of watching Faux News.

Personally, I think Rove left because Bush needed to find himself a fresh bottom-bitch to sing his praises, such as they are.

Really?? So, if Congress SUBPOENAS any citizen, he or she can just REFUSE, right?

Of course, doing so means they can be held in Contempt of Congress.

By the way, the Hatch Act was violated, but again Bush CRIMINALS are REFUSING to turn over the emails.

And Rove was ONE OF SEVEN of the TRAITORS, along with Libby and Armitage who exposed our WMD spy, Valerie Plame Wilson, thus SABOTAGING OUR NATIONAL SECRUITY. Libby’s trial showed this.

If you are going to speak about lowering the discourse and the level of hate, look at your party, left wing ideology first, starting with this entry from TP who rather believe Moyers and left wing newspapers than Karl Rove when it comes to his personal life.

how pathetic and small of the left, they always cry and whine when they are treated the same way that they treat people they disagree with.

now bush, on the other hand, gets loyal support from republicans no matter what law he breaks or what new failure he has accomplished. that’s embarrassing. it must be humiliating to have to hold your nose and still act like you support a complete failure.

    Fallen Pastor Seeks Financial Support

    Saturday August 25, 2007 5:01 AM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) – The Rev. Ted Haggard, who left the megachurch he founded after admitting to “sexual immorality,” has asked supporters for financial assistance while he and his wife pursue their studies.

The former New Life Church pastor plans to seek a master’s degree in counseling at the University of Phoenix while his wife studies psychology, he said in an e-mail sent this week to KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs.

The couple and two of their sons planned to move Oct. 1 to the Phoenix Dream Center, a faith-based halfway house in Phoenix, where Haggard and his wife would provide counseling, the e-mail said.

“It looks as though it will take two years for us to have adequate earning power again, so we are looking for people who will help us monthly for two years,” the e-mail said. “During that time we will continue as full-time students, and then, when I graduate, we won’t need outside support any longer.”

Haggard left the 10,000-member New Life Church late last year and resigned as head of the National Association of Evangelicals after a former male escort accused Haggard of paying him for sex.

Mike Ware, an overseer for New Life Church, told The Gazette of Colorado Springs on Friday that it was premature of Haggard to release the statement without first consulting the overseers.

A New Life spokesman did not immediately return a phone message left late Friday by The Associated Press.

Haggard received a salary of $115,000 for the 10 months he worked in 2006 and an $85,000 anniversary bonus before the scandal broke, The Gazette reported. Haggard’s severance package included a year’s salary of $138,000, and he collects royalties on his book titles, the newspaper reported.

El Paso County records show Haggard’s home, which has been up for sale, has a market value of $715,051.

Rev. Ted’s got his hand out; let’s see how many of his fundy buddies actually practice what they preach – ’cause Rev. Ted is spitting on their beloved “just ask God for it” philosophy by asking for a secular handout instead of divine intervention.

The same is true of Bush and Cheney. They may SAY they are “christians”, but their ACTIONS show they do NOT follow Jesus’s Word.

The only thing worse would be if you were, oh say homophobic while simultaneously having a lesbian daughter, but there’s no one in the Bush administration as cynically repugnant as that, is there?

Of course Karl Rove is religious. HaHaaha ha. He worships the Child-eating godd MOLOCH and the BEAST OF THE APOCALYPSE! HA HA HA HA HA HA!

  215. Chris says:

Unfortunately, many naive christians confused the election of g.w. bush with the Second Coming. Now, after six years of incompetence, corruption and blood-stained blunders, even those sheep who so easily had their own wool pulled over their eyes are being awakened by the stench of the rotting corpse that is this vile, lying administation. Maybe, finally, even *they* will see this perverted presidency for the sick, traitorous thing it has always been.

How could anyone be so gullible as to believe anyone associated with this president is capable of telling the truth? Faux news? Could anyone with half-a-brain call Faux a credible news organization, and keep a straight face while doing so?

  216. LoneTreeFox says:

    He blamed his “lawyer”.

    Yup. “personal responsibility”!

    not…

  222. W.Clements says:

That’s pretty funny: Wallace of Faux News slamming Moyers for his “failure” to get the facts. Yeah, Fox News is known the land over for it’s even-handed, balanced reporting, it’s journalistic integrity, and it’s rigorous fact-checking.

Wallace, as a Fox News clone, is doing what Fox News does best. Propaganda comes off closer to the truth.

  223. jim says:

Let me get this prefectly straight. Wallace says “That’s reporting 101″ to Moyers after the rove told Wallace he was a “Christian” and that’s all is needed according to Wallace!

Unbelievable! Do you trolls really think that anyone owes Bill O’Reilly an appearance on his show? O’Reilly is a dick. Like anyone with half a brain would go on his show and legitimize a guy who calls his guests “pinheads” and cuts off their mikes. That’s really bright. BillO says about anyone who wont come on “we tried to get him on the show and he doesn’t want to sit in the no-spin zone” as if it’s mandatory that anyone he wants to have on should capitulate. Moyers has far too much class to enter into a shouting match with a jackass like O’Reilly. Nobody owes Fox News an appearance, ever.

  226. Stephen says:

Wallace’s idea of reporting is bending over for whatever the administration is pushing.

  227. janmbl says:

Chris Wallace appeared with his father Mike Wallace on C-span when Mike openly criticized the press for shutting down prior to the invasion of IRAQ and not investigating the way they should have and in general is not the MEDIA that we knew in the past.
Chris avoided the question altogether and said it was because he wanted a LONGER career than his father had. Apparently scared of his job— Chris didn’t have the courage to speak out and why I don’t think he could be hired by anyone except FOX because he follows their rules
Bill Moyers isn’t afraid to speak out for what he believes —because he’s a true American.

  228. Onelunglarry says:

Ignorance here is absolutely pervasive……….if Moyer’s wanted more than 10-15 viewers of his rants he would make an appearance on the highest rated cable news show and their 2 million plus viewers and pitch his crap, in the process he could also tell why he has a hard on for Fox and lies so much……..DUH!

  236. Joe T. says:

My take on this is that Rove’s “faith” is just a conversion of convenience, in response to critics who’ve outed him as a manipulator. He obviously went around almost bragging about his agnosticism for a long while, until his own words and deeds caught up with him. How easy it is now to go through the motions, read devotionals, attend Episcopal services, and do other things that would indicate he was a believer all along.

It appears it’s not just the Religious Right which is being flim-flammed by this confidence man, but now, the media and the American public.

If they have done nothing wrong, then why do they hide behind EP. If they have done nothing wrong, then why don’t they appoint a special prosecutor to investigate.

Rove is lying through his teeth about his religion because he was confronted on the air – so lying is always the first option. Were he to have been pressed further by Wallace, or anyone for that matter, he would have deflected, waffled, ducked and avoided any direct reply.

Also if his liftime contribution is truly a buck “o” nine, I think you better think again.

You should measure a person by their actions and Rove’s actions have never been those of a Christian person. While many people argue over Jimmy Carter’s effectiveness as president, no one can argue that he is not a truly Christian person.

Rove made that back in spades, I think, to him, it was a political investment. Lets not forget he also backed the faith based initiative.

    http://www.theocracywatch.org/faith_base.htm
According to Daniel Zwerdling who produced two programs on faith-based initiative for Bill Moyers TV show NOW in September, 2003, “administration spokesmen say they can’t break down how much money has gone so far to religious groups .. they claim they don’t keep that information.”

If they had just ASKED Rove, I’m sure he would have also told us about all those WMD in Iraq. He’d explain how Saddam was behind 9/11. He’d then point out how Saddam was getting nukes from Africa at the time we invaded. Real journalists, like the ones from Fox, would just accept the proven liars’ word about these things, then move on to other propaganda.

Are left of center political commentators only allow to hold their opinions if they receive no compensation for them?

Please, tell me why Mr. Moyers making money from his programming is a problem. If you don’t like the fact that Bill Moyers’ programs on DVD and casette make money for Mr. Moyers, don’t buy a copy of his programs.

How convenient for Rove that Wallace — like the majority of “reporters” and “journalists” at FOX — is only a pansy for this White House.

So, Rove has nothing to fear today. It’s only the history books that he won’t like — long after he’s already burned in Hell, of course.

  290. Lora says:

But here’s the rub, according to an article by Stephen Hayes in “The Weekly Standard,” Moyers owns the documentaries, and after they are broadcast on PBS, he sells the videocassettes, keeping the proceeds. To all who think Moyers is not talking to Rove out of fear- Face Facts! Rove, never responded to those he felt threatened with. Why should he respond to Bill Moyers?

  294. Jason M. Hendler says:

    BURN!

Chris Wallace brought the smackdown on Moyer, who refuses to confront Karl Rove directly on his absurd assertions that Rove is an agnostic. A REAL journalist would collect up this “research” and ASK Karl Rove to comment on them, then incorporate Karl Rove’s comments into the article.

As Chris Wallace pointed out, Moyers didn’t want to include Karl’s comments, because they would have poked holes in the intended smear job that Moyers wanted to print.

THAT makes Moyers a political hack, and NOT a journalist.

  295. barfly says:

“A REAL journalist would collect up this “research” and ASK Karl Rove to comment on them, then incorporate Karl Rove’s comments into the article.”

Someone would have to be a world-class boob to think Rove would would tell the truth on this issue.

    Jason, you are that boob.

  297. radlib1 says:

Karl Rove does the Devil’s Work (i.e., electing George W. Bush, declaring a preemptive War on Iraq, and declaring that anyone who opposes Bush – or him- is somehow unpatriotic?).

That, my friends, is the mark of Satan — which Karl Rove will carry to the grave and beyond.

  298. Kari Cleghorn says:

Just because Rove said to Chris Wallace that he is a Christian, doesn’t mean that he’s a good and a godly person. When someone like Rove slanders others, lies or makes troubles for others isn’t what I’d call a good Christian. How would God rate those kinds of people? It’s easy to say “I believe in God” one day and screw others on the other six days. It’s these Christians that don’t understand cause and effect at all.

  299. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #300, Kari,

Be that as it may, one should give the subject of their article an opportunity to address the points the “journalist” is trying to make. It is the journalist’s obligation to ask the subject to comment, print the comments, then the journalist can characterize those comments any way they please. To not even bother asking is plainly unethical, but typical of a political hack, and not a true journalist.

  300. radlib1 says:

P.S. And that’s whether he calls himself an Episcopalian or not.

Karl Rove is not the anti-Christ, but he works for him.

“Christopher Hitchens doesn’t “hate God” — he simply doesn’t believe in him.”

If Hitchens simply didn’t believe in God, he would just say that and move on.

“However, Rove is ready proof that regardless of your faith (or lack thereof) you can be an agent for evil — for promoting tribalism, separatism, fear and hatred in the service of your own shallow myopic political ends. The only thing worse would be if you were, oh say homophobic while simultaneously having a lesbian daughter, but there’s no one in the Bush administration as cynically repugnant as that, is there”?
    Comment by Brian S. — August 26, 2007 @ 5:28 pm

I assume you have proof that Cheney has an irrational fear of homosexuals rather than simply disapproving of their lifestyle? He can love his daughter and disapprove her lifestyle. Many parents find themselves in this position when their children go against their moral values in various ways. Are you suggesting that Cheney turn his back on his daughter or give up his principals and say that her lifestyle is ok even though he believes it is morally wrong? Either choice would be cynically repugnant, eh? ;)

Given this, it’s easy to see why someone would not simply ‘move on’ after denying the existence of God. But I guess it’s easier to refute someone’s reasoning if you only refer to half of what they say, isn’t it?

  303. Also Ran says:

Still wonder how the Bush followers find the nerve to post anything about the democrats , should be hiding their heads in shame.
These last 6 years this administration has shown corruption to be their main goal ; contract kickbacks , stealing tax dollars that has ear marks for helping our soldiers with the war with Iraq , stealing funds designed for meals for the troops , charging them $1 more for the gas they use in the Iraq war , giving them sewer water to bathe , cook their food and drink , cut their health benefits after they are wounded and back in the states , not giving them the best of armor and equipment that we have.
In doing this they have given their family , friends and war contractors billion of tax dollars with there has be no accountablity which billions have been stolen , vanished , stolen and miss used.

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, THE TRUTH IS THE GREATEST ENEMY OF THE STATE.” — Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945

therefore, for you to quote the weekly stabdard as a source of critique against anyone deivering a fact-based presentation exposes you as a simple troll who has yet to ubderstand that the only people foolish enough to take the bait are already faithful 25%ers and your efforts are a waste of energy.

stop making a fool of yourself and go back to pressing your “end times” and “surge is working” and “obama is a muslim” t-shirts.. because those create true blievers. WHEW!

you and I are partially funding Bill’s TV projects, which he is personally profiting from. Do you have a problem with that? I do.

    Not in the least.

I don’t see any attribution to your claims. If it is true, and given that there is a (broken) link with billo’s name in it I would seriously doubt the veracity, it is fine with me. That man has done more good in his life than the whole mr.bush administration and Faux news put together.

And Chris is no Mike Wallace. Poor Mike, I bet this is one father who wished his son didn’t go into the family business.
He must be so proud. not.

  313. Maxbyte says:

Chris Wallace is not the right person to criticize Moyers. If Chris ever amounts to even half of Bill Moyers’ stature as a professional, it will come as a shock to a lot of us, especially Wallace’s own father. Mike Wallace does not think much of his son’s professional skills. While Mike has his own share of detractors, Chris talks so fast his brain can’t keep up with the nonsense that queues in his mouth.

Regardless of Rove’s affiliation or lack of it with religion of any kind, it has long been known that Rove actively courted the religious right for its money, but privately referred to them in very derogatory terms. Rove’s inclination treat people like dirt is likely to be one of the things Americans remember most about him.

  314. Maxbyte says:

Maggie, good post: “I think that those who still believe ANYTHING coming from ANYONE in this administration are absolutely delusional.”

The frightening part of it is that I’m not sure the Democrats are capable of doing enough, or that they are capable of doing better. That’s one of the problems with a two-party system. We put one party in office until they begin to smell, so then we vote in a new party just to change the video and sound bites. We only have two choices if we care if our vote counts. What we need is more power for citizens to change the top when they’ve clearly lost their way. Congress won’t do it, but American voters will if given the chance.

  315. Jimh says:

What’s that old, vulgar expression about the best part of Chris Wallace having run down his distinguished father’s leg?

  316. DEWA says:

Rove seems strange to me, for someone who stated he resigned because he wanted to spend more time with his family, he’s spending a lot of time hitting the media circuit. At least when Clinton lied nobody died.

  318. Neo-American says:

  319. Jimmy says:

Why didn’t Mike Wallace b-slap his kid long ago when he decided to work for the Fake News Combany? Couldn’t Mike get his kid a job at CBS? Or was he an apple that fell a mile from the tree and not skilled enough to do good journalistic work?

As for Rove – heh – he is loved by the 19% crowd, those fat cats that have for almost 7 years benefitted from his pulling of the social, economic and classist strings of the chump in charge. He is teflon. He is also a liar when he claims devotion to anything besides money and power. He will now work for the Hillary Haters to attempt to dislodge her from the trust of the middle class.

When will somone do something to help the middle class? When and if Hillary is elected we will find out. It’s our best chance.

Beware the Hillary Haters. Believe nothing you hear from them. Return disdain to them. Get Jeffersonian on them.

  320. btchakir says:

I endorse Bill Moyers making a “profit” on his work. He does not take money from the same corporate clowns that Chris Wallace, Bill O’Reilley or any of the other TV and radio broadcasters do… by making his own deal directly with his listeners and viewers he maintains his integrity. That’s Great! I hope he makes millions! (at the very least I know he’ll invest it in revealing even more of what scumbags like Rove are doing to this country)…

    Bravo Bill!

So – with the facts staring them – and America – in the face…this administration LIED TO US. Shame on them! This administration needs to be removed and IMPEACHED TODAY. God Damn this administration, God Bless America!

No deal with viewers. Just taking money directly from the federal govt. Try and stop your part of the money from going to him once. See how that works for ya, then say you made a deal with him. ;)

  331. Parrotlover77 says:

Rove is a religious camelion. If we were prdominantly Jewish populated country, guess what religion he’d be?

A true agnostic/atheist is not ashamed of his belief. If he’s truly “found” religion (many quotes from his past state otherwise), then congratulations to him. whoop-dee-fricking-do. I’m skeptical about his assertation because I know that the Fox viewership (Wallace is a great example) take his word at face value. It’s that easy. Look at Bush. He says he’s Christian but where does it show? I’m trying to remember how many wars Jesus started and who he said we should hate instead of love. And that line where Jesus said “be rich and greedy, for it is good” where was that again? But the fact is he just says he’s Christian, invokes the words “god” and “jesus” and then all the sudden he the masses at Fox think he is a Good Man (TM). But if an atheist came on Fox, even if he lived in poverty and donated millions to helping the poor, he’d be chastised as the devil.

    Fun stuff!

  332. Thad says:

…Huh. So believing what the White House tells you without question is part of reporting 101?

    That…explains an awful lot, actually.

  333. Jack Chalker says:

Oh please…so good sources are the kind that say “…I distinctly recall…” or “…told his friend…” or “…told a colleague. Correct me if I’m wrong but where I come from we call this type of sourcing hearsay. You know, the kind of sourcing that gets thrown out of court. The kind of sourcing that is unverified or unofficial information. Oh hell lets call it what it really is…rumor mongering.

To avoid rumor mongering Mr. Moyer could have gone to the source. I’m sure Mr. Rove would have been glad to talk to him. However, Mr. Moyer instead chose the lazy route. He chose the cut and paste route. He chose the type of reporting one does when one cannot get beyond their own biases.

An unbiased reporter/investigator would go to Mr. Rove and request an interview. An unbiased reporter/investigator would most certainly make attempts to find out what church/s Mr. Rove frequented and perhaps even question some members of the congregation. An unbiased reporter would most certainly check sources quoted by others. Mr. Moyer did none of these things. Instead what Mr. Moyer did do was show us his utter lack of neutrality.

Moreover, by not questioning Mr. Rove directly, Mr. Moyer also showed us his utter lack of balls. Really…he doesn’t have any I heard it from a friend who was talking to his sister who knows………

  334. Man in the Middle says:

An objective journalist writing about another person’s faith would have included an actual interview with the subject instead of just basing their article on hearsay.

  335. RobertPaul says:

Sorry Chris baby. You are not even fit to walk on the same path as Bill Moyers.

    You talk about Journalism 101…shit!

Moyer’s has forgotten more about journalism than you will EVER know.

Why don’t you go back to your daddy and ask him to explain the real world to you.

For you to even make comments about Bill Moyer is outrageous!

On your best day, you couldn’t come up to his knee. Creep.

Go back to Fox Noise where you belong. At least there no one will attirbute your blathering with reality.

Didn’t you learn anything when Clinton knocked you on your ass on nationwide television?

Just go away and leave the reporting to real JOURNALISTS!

  336. JIMBO says:

Chris Matthews has insulted Moyers and his own father by not practicing “Reporting 101.” How stupid can he be.

Chris, llearn to respect your elders and the work they left behind before and after you were in diapers.

  337. harkin says:

Wallace is right. Using hearsay without checking with the man you’re accusing is unprofessional, incompetent and cowardly.

He’s pwned but will never know it because he’s so used to PBS and it’s “never an opposing viewpoint” NOW program.

Just last month he had two guys on both screaming for impeachment, even though most democrats know what an idiotic idea it is. Unbury your head Bill while you’re still breathing. This is the same clown who trumpeted LBJs war and now says he was always against it.

  338. Lance says:

If you want to know if a politician believes in God, just ask him. And, if you want to know if O.J. Simpson killed Nicole, just ask him. And if you want to know if Bill Clinton has sex with ‘that woman,’ just ask him. No need for investigative journalism. If you want the truth, just go to the source and ask them.

  339. ~Foo Fighter~ says:

The whole point of Moyers comments is that Rove is a liar and a hypocrit that prays upon the faithful.

You can’t counter that argument by “asking” Rove if he’s a liar and a hypocrit.

The WHOLE point is that Rove can’t be relied on to provide a straight answer…THAT’s why the statments of other people is relevent.

    Sheesh.

    ~Foo Fighter~
