Escalation Architect Bemoans Label Of ‘Armchair General,’ Claims Iraqi Deaths Are ‘Way Down’

This weekend on Washington D.C. ABC affiliate’s Capital Sunday, Center for American Progress Iraq analyst Brian Katulis debated American Enterprise Institute’s military analyst — and Iraq escalation architect — Fred Kagan.

“Right now, Iraq is in civil war. It’s in fact in multiple civil wars,” Katulis said. “And I don’t think that these military tactics that these armchair generals and the academics offer up fundamentally address the core issue — that Iraqis are in a vicious struggle for power.”

Taking issue with Katulis’ description of him as an “armchair general,” Kagan complained that “you only get called an armchair general when you actually advocate doing anything.” Speaking as an armchair general, Kagan went on to claim “sectarian killings are way down,” despite an AP report that Iraqi deaths have doubled so far this year.

Watch it:

Katulis rejected Kagan’s assertion that Iraqi deaths are “way down”:

Sectarian killing is not down. If you look at the NIE, they say the places where Baghdad has become stabilized, it’s because of sectarian cleansing. Baghdad used to be a 65 percent Sunni majority city. Now it’s 75 percent [Shia], and we’re standing there and watching this happen while the militias are right underneath our nose, infiltrated in the very security forces that we’re supporting. And this raises big questions about what the heck we’re doing over there.

Armchair general Fred Kagan has advocated escalation so the U.S. can militarily confront Syria and Iran in the future. He said of escalation last month, “Whatever you can say about the current strategy, it has not failed.”

I love it. What is failure? I do not know. No one knows. You can only determine success or failure in terms of what your goals are in the operation. Bush and his ilk are quite adept at never really quite defining the goas or the metrics by which to judge the success or failure of their actions.

The is the nonaccountable administration. They can never be judged. Thus, they can never have made a mistake. GOD HELP US ALL.

  2. Roy Eidelson Says:

For those interested in a psychological analysis of warmongering, I have recently completed a 10-minute online video entitled “Resisting the Drums of War.” It examines how the Bush administration has promoted the misguided and destructive war in Iraq by targeting five core concerns that often govern our lives--concerns about vulnerability, injustice, distrust, superiority, and helplessness. Looking ahead, the continuing occupation of Iraq--or an attack on Iran--will likely be sold to us in much the same way. The video examines these warmongering appeals and how to counter them. It’s available for viewing HERE.

John Kerry? Who cares? This is about Iraq, you know, bad policy, criminal execution, no good options left. If you have any ideas beside "stay the course" lets have it.

    My opinion, OK
    Go BIG or Go Home.

Go big means raising military salaries as much as needed to create the forces needed to place at least 300,00 troops on the ground. Then we put a strongman in place. Then we train and equip him with an army. Now we are at least back to where we started from. Cost no limit, raise taxes and cut domestic programs to pay for it. It should be completed in 7-10 years.

Or go home and watch Iraq burn.

Like Thomas Ricks said this morning on MTP, there are no good options left

I don't think this is true, and I've been suggesting the same thing for several years: partition. It's not guarantee of peace in our time, but a reasonable and fair distribution of "Iraq" into northern Kurdistan, central Sunnistan and southern Shiiastan (whew), including an equitable distribution to the Sunnis of oil revenue from north and south, would at least have a chance of some stability.

The biggest hindrance to the idea is the attitude of the surrounding countries, especially Turkey, who is chomping at the bit for an opportunity to subdue the Kurds.

Well, that and the fact the this administration has repeatedly refused to consider partition as an option.

  57. Gen Kaye Says:

In the same way, al-Qaeda got its start during the Cold War because the U.S. saw the radical Islamicists as anti-communist allies. The extremists in Afghanistan were once seen as glorious freedom fighters. Their training camps, guns, and furnished caves were provided courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer.

So it is in Iraq today. After the U.S. overthrew Saddam's government, the plan was to jump-start a new central government under U.S. control. That's when the fighting started. What group would control it? There is no answer to that question, even today. The U.S. has always thought the Shiites should run the show, religious law and all. But that plan hasn't worked out. -Lew Rockwell

Or go home in 10 years, and watch Iraq burn. Or, more realistically, our lil' Dictator wipes out his opposition and the sect they belong to - only burning the city when he really needs to - and terrorizes the remaining population into submission. Nice democracy ya' got there. If that's all the Republicans got, I wouldn't hire one to run a lemon aid stand - much less a war.

Like Thomas Ricks said this morning on MTP, there are no good options left.

There never were any good options. The war was a stupid idea. That's why anyone who supported the war or GWB can honestly be referred to as an imbecile.

Partition may be an option, but if we are going to do it , there will have to be a re-commitment to Iraq. Money and troops will have to be raised and George Bush lacks the public trust and political clout to do either. It would have to take place after Jan 08, and I don't know how a new President could rally support for another effort. It would be easier to blame the Iraqi’s, and blame the other party, and move on. Also, you are correct that Turkey would go ape s--t.

I guess I don't think of partition as being a "good" option.

It all comes down to a semantical argument with nothing being able to be defined or resolved. Precisely what these morons wanted it to be.....an everlasting occupation without goals.

Let's all give him our support.

PS - It might have been nice for TP to do a small announcement of this since our cause is so important, but then again, it is the (small though we may be) people who spread the word.

    Goodnight.

It has been a success for the insurgents, but certainly not for us. It has not brought us any closer to closing the oil theft with the Iraqi's. It has caused 600+ more deaths. It has bankrupted us to the tune of billions per month that we can't hope to pay back (China now owns us). It has not brought the government in Iraq any closer to any kind of reconciliation.

You are right. Our escalation has been a huge success for the insurgents. Congratulations Rethugs...I'm sure the parents of those 600+ who lost their lives because of you are eternally grateful for your lemming devotion to the man who is leading you off a cliff.

Discussing our failures, such as Vietnam, Korea, and Iraq, among countless others, makes us BETTER, makes America STRONGER, and moreover does not DOOM US TO REPEAT THOSE MISTAKES AGAIN.

Everybody here knows you rightard freaks will make up whatever you think will distract the American people from the matter at hand; the utter treason of the entire bush apparatus. Hillary and Bill Clinton have had every single rightwing hatemonger after them for many years, and nothing has stuck. Nothing. So give it up; your envy of a successful president and his brilliant wife is understandable, but fruitless. Nobody on the right will ever accomplish as much as they did, nobody in the GOP will ever be as popular worldwide as Bill Clinton. Nothing you can do or say will take away the accomplishments of Clinton, the medals of Kerry, the service of Al Gore, or the superiority of governance of the Democratic Party over the repigs throughout modern history. You can't make WW2 a reepuke win, since you all fought against going to war, and you can't make Iraq a liberal loss, since you all defend the murderous policies of a fratboy deserter sociopath and his group of thieves. The right's deceptive, fraudulent, unsubstantiated lies are in full view of the american public, and they get it. The GOP is done, and good riddance; the conservative movement is flushed. America will regain her freedom and place of leadershi in the world when liberals take her back from the Republicant thugs and whores that stole her.

  255. Frank J Says:

    Ten Postulates of Political Correctness

Political correctness insinuates itself into the body politic under many aliases – multiculturalism, diversity, tolerance, conventional wisdom, progressive thought (how’s that for an oxymoron?), all the smelly little orthodoxies of our time. It comes in a number of varieties and flavors.

As a public service, I have gathered together the ten basic principles of PC. You might call them the Ten Postulates of PC; or maybe they could be couched in the imperative as the Ten Commandments of Multiculturalism.

    1. America is uniquely evil.
    2. America is never justified in defending itself.
    3. Illiterate people from poor societies are superior to Americans.
    4. The Earth would be better off without human beings.
    5. Making a profit is always immoral.
    6. Differences between individuals or groups are unfair.
    7. For Designated Victim Groups, strong feelings excuse all behavior.
    8. Policies informed by Judæo-Christian principles are inherently suspect.
    9. Conservatives are hypocrites; liberals are sincere.
    10. There are no acts of God; there are only acts of Government.

There are numerous corollaries, extensions, and exceptions to the Ten Postulates, so a little exegesis is in order.

    1. America is uniquely evil.

American “democracy” is a charade. The US is really a fascist dictatorship ruled by the Bush cabal manipulated by Zionist neocons.

Other countries can be arranged in descending order of evil: Israel, Britain, Australia, Italy, and so on, until we arrive at the Arab countries, Iran, North Korea, and Cuba. Cuba, of course, has no evil in it whatsoever.

There are occasionally exceptions to American evil, but only under a Democratic administration, and with the approval of France and Germany.

    2. America is never justified in defending itself.

War never solved anything. Negotiations through the UN are always the best way to address issues. Nations coming together in goodwill through common dialogue can work with each other to solve their problems. If Americans were more sensitive to the diverse concerns of other cultures, there would never be any aggression against us.

    Etc blah yak.

    3. Illiterate people from poor societies are superior to Americans.

People who are raised without all the technological distractions that afflict us in the West are better able to reach intuitive understanding of the world and live in tune with their environment. Just ask Drew Barrymore – she thinks it’s better to live in an earthen-floored hut without electricity than in a Malibu beach house.

Like, y’know, these people, they can, like teach us stuff about Mother Earth and all that.

    4. The Earth would be better off without human beings.

Humankind is a scourge, an affliction, upon the face of the planet. We must reduce our ecological “footprint”, preferably to zero. The human population must be drastically reduced.

Exception: we Greens will remain, in order to decide who has to die.

    5. Making a profit is always immoral.

Property is robbery. All economic activity should be controlled by special government bodies to make sure prices are fair and nobody gets ripped off. See #6 below.

    6. Differences between individuals or groups are unfair.

Affirmative action. No child left behind. Everybody is above average. No game has a loser. Nobody is richer than anyone else. Nobody is stupider than anyone else. No one knows more than anyone else.

We await with eager anticipation the equality of the grave.

    7. For Designated Victim Groups, strong feelings excuse all behavior.

When South Central LA is burning, it’s understandable because members of a Designated Victim Group were aroused to ire by a court verdict. When Arabs crash jets into skyscrapers, they’re angry because our policies have made them poor and backward, and, besides, Israel oppresses their Palestinian brothers. When a junior thug eliminates half his high school class with gunfire, it’s because he was bullied and held in contempt by jocks.

    8. Policies informed by Judæo-Christian principles are inherently suspect.

To act on moral principles is judgmental, and we must not be judgmental. Except, of course, when condemning racists, sexists, homophobes, bigots, fundamentalists…

    9. Conservatives are hypocrites; liberals are sincere.

If a conservative’s policies benefit his constituents, he’s being cynical. When a liberal lines his pockets with public funds, sleeps with his secretary, and assaults his subordinates – well, he’s doing it “for the children”.

    10. There are no acts of God; there are only acts of Government.

When a tornado takes out a trailer park, the government’s warning system is inadequate. When a hurricane devastates South Florida, building codes must be improved, and FEMA will pay for the damage. When people die in floods, earthquakes, ice storms, and asteroid strikes, the government is to blame for not warning them or protecting them.

On the positive side, government creates jobs and distributes benefices through the generosity of its welfare programs. Government makes the sun to shine and the rain to fall, especially on subsidized agriculture.

Political correctness is a corrosive ideology that has eaten its way through most of the major institutions of Western culture, leaving them hollowed out and weakened in the face of the Great Islamic Jihad. Our enemy is filled with righteous zeal, ready to die for his beliefs, and has no doubt in the superiority of his religion. We Westerners, with our self-deprecatory posturing and theology of self-loathing, have inadequate spiritual defenses against this onslaught. It is past time to update our virus definitions before the PC Worm shuts us down.

    * One to attack and question the patriotism of anyone who has questions about the light bulb.

    * One to blame the previous administration for the need of a new light bulb.

    * One to arrange the invasion of a country rumored to have a secret stockpile of light bulbs.

    * One to get together with Vice President Cheney and figure out how to pay Halliburton one million dollars for each light bulb.

    * One to arrange a photo-op session showing Bush changing the light bulb while dressed in a flight suit and wrapped in an American flag.

    * And finally, one to explain to Bush the difference between screwing a light bulb and screwing the country.

You should take a little time to read some history, because you clearly are living in a vacuum.

The US government, regardless of which party is nominally in control, has made very effort for more than a century to maintain control over resources throughout the world. It's a different model than the old colonial system which required actual possession of a country (like the British Empire) but times have changed. Now it is only necessary to assure access to critical resources, whether it be oil, bananas or flowers. The American economy is based on access to cheap, uninterrupted commodities from overseas. As long as that access is granted, "we" don't interfere, but if the citizens of another country decide they're sick of starving so that Americans have cheap coffee, look out!

"We" have no business in the Middle East as an occupying force. There is no IslamoFascism, there are people defending their turf against imperial agression, as usual. We can honorably leave, and try to correct our murderous ways, or we can stay and suffer another defeat at the hands of insurgents, like Viet Nam. You can call it surrender, but it would be honorable, so, under you dishonarable cowards, we will be defeated, again. And you won't lift a finger to do anything about it, which is why we'll be defeated. and, as far as I'm concerned, the sooner the better. I hope they drive us out next week. It's disgusting that our National Guard is being used for empire-building, and we are wrong. I'm not a jock-sniffing My Country Right Or Wrong moron like you, Frank.
