Bush and Cornyn react to Gonzales departure: It’s sad.

President Bush, commenting on Alberto Gonzales’ resignation this morning, said, “It is sad.” Bush isn’t the only one in mourning. Appearing on MSNBC and CNN, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) repeated the same talking point. “I think it’s a sad thing,” Cornyn said, adding that today is “a sad day.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/08/sad.320.240.flv]

In a statement released this morning, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers finds the true sadness in the situation. “It is a sad day when the Attorney General of the United States resigns amid a cloud of suspicion that the system of justice has been manipulated for political purposes,” Conyers said.

Digg It!

Yes, in those cases it is “sad” that the ag resigned.

Let’s just hope that Gonzales doesn’t wake up tomorrow and “forget” that he resigned today. Someone please remind him to tie a string on his finger…

  18. JMOHR says:

This administration has set a new low record for stonewalling and denial as to its inappropriate (if not illegal) actions. Gonzales could have been discharged (or asked to resign) for simply failing to act as an adequate administrator. However, this administration has learned that there is no punishment for its outrageous actions. Even as I writed, I hear an NPR report which equivocates as to whether anything wrong went on. The news media’s failure to act as an hones broker of the news, its inability to make a definite statement as to the ethics if not the legality of this administration’s actions will result in serious damage to the republic and its citizens.

Whats sad is that Bush gave into the liberal wining coming from the left. Whats sad is that the dems are going after a attorney general in the middle of war. A attorney general that never broke ANY laws. Apparently partisan witch hunts are more important to the dems then fighting a war. WERE LOSING THE WAY CASE THE DEMS ARE SABOTAGIN IT. There purposefully trying to lose the war so they can score political points. THATS WHATS SAD. Look at the facts look at how much worse the war has gotten since the dems have taken over the house and senate. The entire dem leadership should be in GITMO no in charge of congress thats whats SAD.

“Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’s resignation came on Friday in a phone call with President Bush, and the two had lunch together at Bush’s Crawford ranch on Sunday, along with Gonzales’s wife.”

And this is a hint that Gonzo’s resignation wasn’t his own decision. Next time Gonzo, you should have let Bush’s call go to voice mail and say that you didn’t get the message.

What’s really “sad” is the fact that this AG lied, then tried to cover it up, suffered from constant amnesia when called to testify, and continued his charade in not providing the requested emails and testimony in the Attorney Firing Scandal. If he believes that his departure means the end to his investigation, he’s got another thought coming. It’s “sad” all right – “sad” that his sorry, irresponsible, criminal butt isn’t sitting in jail right now, that’s what’s truly “sad”!

#60 The only reason there was nothing to be found is because this fraud refused to provide testimony – he either had “selective amnesia” – a total “brain fart”, or he’s just got his head entirely up his ass. In the meantime, now some slick prosecutor can nail his sorry ass for all of his lies and incompetence – not to mention criminal wrongdoing in the Attorney Scandal….. His ass is not off the grill yet, that’s for sure.

Resigning from public office only makes him a much larger prosecutorial target as a civilian now.

Here is a bit of background on the “honorable” mr. Cronyn (From WIkipedia:

National Journal as the third-most conservative United States Senator in their March 2007 rankings.[8]

In the 2004 debate surrounding the Federal Marriage Amendment, Cornyn released an advance copy of a speech he was to give at the Heritage Foundation. In the speech, he wrote, “It does not affect your daily life very much if your neighbor marries a box turtle. But that does not mean it is right … [N]ow you must raise your children up in a world where that union of man and box turtle is on the same legal footing as man and wife.” He removed the reference to the box turtle in the actual speech, but the Washington Post ran the quote. The Daily Show lampooned the quote, while a gay rights group started a news blog called Box Turtle Bulletin. [9]

In September 2005, Cornyn sponsored a bill that would allow law enforcement to force anyone arrested or detained to provide samples of their DNA, which would be recorded in a central database.[10]

On January 24, 2007, Cornyn was one of 28 Senators who voted to repeal the minimum wage.[11] On February 1, 2007, Cornyn voted to raise the federal minimum wage.

It’s easy to look at Bush and Cheney as rabid dogs that, for the sake and safety of the rest of us, should be eliminated. But there are ways of neutralizing them that don’t involve assassination.

Your other idea — jail — has more potential. If there was any justice at all, Bush and Cheney would be thoroughly investigated on their actions leading to the Iraq invasion, the U.S. Attorney scandal, American torture practices, cronyism, contempt of congress, unconstitutional executive orders, etc. etc., tried, convicted, and jailed.

At the very least I want to see that this miserable administration has their proper place in history and it’s correctly written for all future generations to see what a horrific state this country once was in because we stopped questioning our leaders and blindly accepted the lies they pushed thru.

I hope it’s shown that this is great example on why all Americans need to be active in the democratic process or it will no longer be a democracy. That fear can sweep people to allow those who want to distort this country into power.

Whether Bush sees the inside of a jail cell, or just the confines of the Crawford ranch I hope that all of America sees him (and his administration) as the one(s) who almost destroyed this country.

But that won’t bring back the 3700 brave men and women he sent to be killed or the over 20,000 wounded, who came back to sub-standard treatment or the millions of displaced Iraqis or the 100s of thousnads killed.

Besides, he will hide out in Paraguay, they have no US extradition ….. and is a bit more civilized than Crawford.

Sad. Pobrecito, I will cry a tear for you after I get through with the tens of thousands you have helped send to death and dismemberment in Iraq along with your master.

    Chingate en el culo Gonzo!

Gonzo’s first book will be titled, “If I Had Done It”.

Nothing will bring back the 3700 or the thousands of contractors that have died. Or the tens of thousands of the dead Iraqis. History is filled with victims of the polictical chess game. My hope is that America can learn to participate in our govt. instead of allowing them to push a specific agenda on us.

It is sad that our little woodenhead president ever appointed the little titmouse.

I see nothing sad, Gonzales stepped over the lines one too many times. It is quite lame that he chose to fade away instead of to burn out, but maybe now he can finally help the damned investigation into all the stuff he so conveniently couldn’t remember. Gonzales has to help the people convict Bush and Cheney for war crimes because war crimes were plenty on their very hands and Gonzales doesn’t want the Den Hague Tribunal to think he initiated all of them, does he? Suppose Bush and Cheney do remember some of that stuff, what would Gonzales say?

  109. williamf says:

A sad day ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. These dopes have no idea what they’re doing. A sad day is like when Bush and his SS troopers stole two elections. A sad day is the killing of the Geneva conventions the murder of Habeus Corpus and the justification of torture by alleged Christian politicians. The American people are and have been wading in Bush bullshit for the entire time he’s been in office. He will leave a rich man and he will think he has a special place in heaven. In my book he sucks big time and he is the worst criminal anti-constitution, rule of law president we have ever had. SMU should be proud to have this shithead’s library. Congratulations SMU!

Sad was the witch hunt started by New York’s Charles Schumer speaking to the inner racist of so called white “liberals” and rethuglicans. All the incredible amout of bile coming out of the freaks calling for Mr. Gonzales resignation, never telling the truth they hated a Latino being the chief law enforcement officer for the entire nation. A sad day indeed for equality and justice!

That’s rich. You guys hiding behind some faux affirmative action..! I guess that’s why you’ll be for a Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama or Bill Richardson for president, isn’t it?

Isn’t he the one who was suppose to impeach him? Guess he just couldn’t do that to his good ole buddy.
