BREAKING: Alberto Gonzales Resigns»

gonzales4444.jpg

The New York Times reports Alberto Gonzales will announce his resignation later this morning:

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.

Mr. Gonzales, who had rebuffed calls for his resignation, submitted his to President Bush by telephone on Friday, the official said. His decision was not announced immediately announced, the official added, until after the president invited him and his wife to lunch at his ranch near here.

U.S. News reported this weekend, “The buzz among top Bushies is that beleaguered Attorney General Alberto Gonzales finally plans to depart and will be replaced by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Why Chertoff? Officials say he’s got fans on Capitol Hill, is untouched by the Justice prosecutor scandal, and has more experience than Gonzales did, having served as a federal judge and assistant attorney general.”

UPDATE: In March, Gonzales said, “I’m not going to resign. I’m going to stay focused on protecting our kids.” In June, he promised to “sprint to the finish line” to “accomplish all the goals that are important to me.”

UPDATE II: In April, Gonzales said he would stay as long as he felt he could be effective:

I will stay as long as I feel I can be effective, and I believe I can be effective. Obviously, we’ll be working with the Congress to reassure them that we’ve identified the mistakes that have been made here and that we are taking steps to address them. But I can’t just be focused on the U.S. Attorney situation. I’ve also got to be focused on what’s really important for the American people.

UPDATE III: CNN’s John King: “This is the last of the Texans who came with President Bush to Washington in the close White House circle to have a senior job. Karen Hughes, of course, still at the State Department — she left and came back. But Karl Rove leaving recently, now Alberto Gonzales leaving as well. This President does not have the old Texas posse around him anymore.”

UPDATE IV: The AP reports, “A senior Justice Department official said that a likely temporary replacement for Gonzales is Solicitor General Paul Clement, who would take over until a permanent replacement is found.” FDL has some background on Clement.

UPDATE V: Gonzales will be reading a statement at 10:30 a.m. ET. President Bush is expected to make a statement about Gonzales at 11:30 a.m. from his ranch in Crawford, Texas.

UPDATE VI: Gonzales said, “Yesterday I met with President Bush and informed him of my decision to conclude my government service as attorney general of the United States effective as of September 17th, 2007.” He offered no reason for his departure.

UPDATE VII: Gonzales’s resignation letter HERE.

How about Attorney General Dr. William Dog? My understanding is that he holds a law degree as well as 2 other doctorates.

uhm. But what about the children?

  5. DM Says:

    Another recess appointment?

  6. Democrat Soldier Says:

I wonder if his replacement will faithfully uphold the laws of our nation, or will continue to buckle under to the egregious excesses of Pres. Bush in the same fashion as AG Gonzales has done???

    I won’t hold my breath.

  7. missmolly Says:

Um…does this mean Gonzales has accomplished all his goals?

    Comment by Sonny Red —

Brilliant idea! As a former senator, he should be appoved easily. He’s also of sound mind and character.

  9. Godfry Daniel Says:

    Another victory for Bush!!

  10. Brassmask Says:

    Comment by Sonny Red

I believe Dr. Dog said he holds a PHD, MD and JD. So you are correct.

I don’t think he’d have the votes in the senate. ;)

It’d be a very entertaining committee hearing, though. Send me a fax Sen. Leahy!

  11. Kay Says:

It’s all smoke and mirrors, folks.

  12. missmolly Says:

Any guesses on who will lead Homeland Security if Chertoff gets the AG job? I’m sure there are still some Bushney stooges out there who need a job…

Hah! Thanks for the early morning, Monday laugh! ‘Ol mister “man-on-dog-sex” himself being of “sound mind and character”!

Brassmask, I don’t care what anyone says about you, you’ve got a great sense of humor!

  17. troqua Says:

Santorum?? hahaha! Don’t you guys get it yet? Your days of politicizing our beloved system of laws are over. What we need is a Republican like John Dean, not that he’d be offered the job since he loves the Constitution and law so much.

  18. Godfry Daniel Says:

    Surely I jest.

  19. Brassmask Says:

    President Bush,

Call Rick Santorum. He should get this job. Sonny Red is right.

  20. missmolly Says:

This is a departure from the norm — usually people depart on Friday afternoons. Gonzo even submitted his resignation at the proper time. Was there a reason Bush delayed the announcement by having lunch with him?

My guess is that Bush WANTS Gonzo’s departure to be conspicuous. In an effort to save his own butt, he wants everyone to think that “the problem is gone, folks — everything is hunky-dory now!”

As good as it is to get rid of Gonzales, there are plenty of problems remaining.

Lehey would probably call Wayne as a witness, and he wouldn’t show up.

  24. troqua Says:

Yeah, that’s good. Rick “fetus in a jar” Santorum would be highly entertaining for sure.

Keep that dual-citizenship, Mossad agent OUT of our AG office!

Chertoff is deep, deep in the Mossads pocket. He’s their ace.

Keep dual-citizenship holders OUT of office. We don’t need any split loyalties.

Muck things up badly in the US, and then when the police come knocking on his door, he’ll magically depart to Israel, never to be able to be touched by US law again.

Israel is a terrorist nation. They should be treated as such.

But no. We’re rather give them jobs in our government.

    Heck of a job, Georgie.

  38. Bluedahlia Says:

But it doesn’t mean anything. Flip one out, put one in. What does it matter? You know he is not going to pay for his crimes. None of them will. The Dems are just the force keeping the proles from losing hope and marching on DC. They aren’t meant to DO anything. And they won’t. Justice has fled America.

  39. raynman Says:

As has been noted, this took place at an odd time. Usually you do this at the end of the news cycle (typically Friday afternoon) so that you have the usually talking heads on Saturday and Sunday spinning this in the best possible light so that by Monday, the message has been crafted and will be fed to the masses.

But resigning on a Monday, now that speaks of something a little unusual. And unless Bush moves fast, he can’t even think about a recess appointment.

    Something’s very fishy here…..

You know, the American attention span has been shortened to the length of a gnat f*rt, so this wouldn’t surprise me. After Chertoff takes the reins as AG, Gonzales could be tapped to head HS, with Bush citing his “record of bold leadership”.

  66. missmolly Says:

What I don’t understand is how incredibly loyal everyone connected to the Bush-Cheney machine has been. So far, everyone has obfuscated on command, defended the BA without question, and jumped ship when deemed necessary. You would think that at least ONE of these people who’ve been thrown under the bus would do a John Dean, but it hasn’t happened. Not even Nixon had that degree of allegiance from his people.

So what’s going on here? Is it that the Bush-Cheney operation has been completely legal, above-board, and concerned only with the interests of the American people — and there’s nothing to tell? I suppose that’s possible, but if that’s the case, why are people so resistant to respond to subpoenas and tell the truth?

Is it that the Bush team has been so good to their people, and has been so inspiring that any one of them would gladly take one for the team? This has some merit — we’ve seen that they do take care of their own, in the case of Scooter Libby.

Or is it possible that blackmail is running rampant and everybody is afraid to “turn” on the BA — so afraid that a ruined career, trashed reputation, or even prison is preferable to betrayal. I’d love to know what was discussed at the Bush-Gonzo lunch.

  94. WC Says:

    Comment by missmolly — August 27, 2007 @ 9:01 am

I’d say a combo of the last two explanations you mention.

Remember…Bush was not a 30-something politician still wet behind his ears with maybe one term as governor or mayor or Congressman under his belt (OK…2 terms as governor).

With his Daddy’s extensive political experience and friends, added to Cheney’s, he has had YEARS to make connections and find out who is loyal, and who is not. The loyalty-to-Bush test, like we saw with the US Attys, was not something dreamed up in the first weeks of Bush’s first term. Seeing as how members of the Secret Service will, without question, take a bullet for the President, no matter what party he is affiliated with nor what the SS members think of him as a President, pledging loyalty to cover the Pres’ ass by lying or “not remembering” key facts about certain things is a walk in the park in comparison.

Cheney, for a brief, shining moment, appeared to have a little bit of humanity and smarts in him when he spoke against going into Baghdad in the first Gulf War, and when he supported cuts in the military due to the reduced worldwide threat to the US, brought on by the end of the Cold War. But it didn’t last long.

  95. Jim Says:

No surprise, it has to be a recess appointment of a successor, Bush could never get one of his cronies thru the Senate confirmation. Bush can not afford a REAL AG who will tell him he has been violating the Constitution for the past 6 years, thus a recess appointment and kick the can down the road at Justice just as he is successfully kicking the can down the road in Baghdad.
He doesn’t have daddy to bail him out of a failed presidency as he did repeatedly in the private sector so his only recourse is to honker down and ride it out so it becomes someone else’s problem in January ‘09. A true American Patriot!!!

Personally I would like to see Gonzo subjected to everything HE “declared legal” at gitmo until he “remembers the truth”….and is willing to testify HONESTLY in front of congress.

  101. DRxJ Says:

Gonzalez can be replaced by an inanimate rod.

  103. toasterhead Says:

    Crap!

Why does the White House wait for The Daily Show to go on vacation to make these huge announcements?

  104. Art Says:

    Of course…
    Michael Chertoff…

becacuse he had done such a wonderful job responding to the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the break of the levees in New Orleans.

We need that kind of professionalism and competence in the Attorney General’s office.

Come to think of it… it would be a step up from what they had.

  105. Fan_of_Man Says:

how many want to bet NO criminal (perjury) charges will be filed….

If Reid was smart, he’d hold a press conference immediately after the Prez to announce the Senate is coming back early.

Don’t let this slippery bastard slide another one under the door. Make them have those confirmation hearings.

For everyone thinking the damage done is now over, remember the laws this creep brought are still on the books. Unless the Dems start reversing them, the potential and likelihood of abuse remains.

I would be happy to leave Gonzales an e-mail thanking him for his having “done so much to enhance and fix the laws in our country” — if only I knew what that was. Do you have a list of his accomplishments in this area that were NOT carrying water for his bosses whose objective was to corrupt and circumvent the laws in our country?

Please post a detailed list. Thanks.

  111. WC Says:

He’ll be teaching Con Law at TSU.

TP UPDATE IV: The AP reports, “A senior Justice Department official said that a likely temporary replacement for Gonzales is Solicitor General Paul Clement, who would take over until a permanent replacement is found.” FDL has some background on Clement.

The same guy that argued for all of Bush’s executive overeach cases. Here’s the name of the new recess AG rubberstamp.

Wake up, ‘Leader’ Reid and put a stop to it, pronto!

Gonzo never made a single move without being told exactly what to do by the WH. They’ll just put another puppet in there and nothing will change. Bush and Cheney need to be IMPEACHED!

Hahahahahahah!!!!! THE GOOD GUYS WIN AGAIN!

This is almost as sweet as the November 2006 election spanking we delivered to the Republicans!

Goodbye to an unqualified, incompetent Bushie. Back to practicing real estate law for the law firm that OK’ed the Enron crimes!

  116. Zooey Says:

Bye Gonzo, you worthless waste of skin!! :-)

  117. WC Says:

What I find to be the interesting question, with the Posse all gone now, is who will be advising W? He’s really floundering out there by himself now, having ignored or scoffed at those who tried to give him good counsel from his own party. Cheney certainly is no wise counsel. And we know Bush can’t think on his own.

    Comment by troqua — August 27, 2007 @ 8:46 am

Oh, they’ll find a way to keep in touch. Resigning didn’t stop Karen Hughes. From CBS.com:

One of Mr. Bush’s closest confidantes both politically and socially, Hughes resigned her position as White House communications director in the summer of 2002 to spend more time with her family in Texas. But she did not cede her influence with the president– she’s been in daily contact with his reelection campaign by either phone or e-mail and has spoken to Mr. Bush several times weekly.

If you are talking about mr. p’s nuclear meltdowns, they are coming earlier in the day and now the rants are even more juvenile, if that is possible.

  123. Ken Says:

There are too many Ric Santorum nuts on this post! Santorum was the most easily bribed (ah -influenced!) senator of the decade. Remember he wanted to give the weather service to Accucheck Weather for only a $25,000 bribe (ah-donation!) from them! Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Gonzales may be gone, but his crimes are not forgotten.

Here’s a look back at The Top 10 Reasons Gonzales Had to Go:
    1. Lying Under Oath
    2. Purging Prosecutors
    3. Misusing the Patriot Act’s National Security Letters
    4. Authorizing Illegal NSA Domestic Surveillance
    5. Enabling John Yoo and Unchecked Presidential War Powers
    6. Rendering the Geneva Conventions “Quaint”
    7. Supporting Military Commissions and the End of Habeas Corpus
    8. Blessing Unprecedented Expansion of Presidential Signing Statements
    9. Facilitating a CIA Leak Cover-Up
    10. Gutting Minority Voting Rights

    > Hey Null,

    > leave the rest of us out!

If he knows what I’m planning he may try and circumvent it. Don’t know if it would work, heck, im not even sure if my plan will work in the first place, but I definitely would prefer the element of surprise.

I need to send a message regarding my idea to someone I know is a friendly TP regular off this site, maybe on private blog or someones webpage (or even fax). I have myspace so someone’s myspace would work too..

I’d rather no one post there email, as it would probably get spammed by the P-ananator…

  148. nanlichi Says:

Definitely include upside00 in on the P’eeing fun. Sometimes I wonder if he’s not schizoid. It’s a rare talent who can throw scat with the best of them, and still post articulate arguments to the trolls on another level.

My bet is Mr. P is a freshman at some loser university, and has been busted several times for exposing himself in truckstop bathrooms.

    Do I win a prize?

  149. Null and aVoid Chocolate Jesus Says:

    >Do I win a prize?

Sorry no.. its nothing scandalous or dramatic at all, but it could cause him to get in a small bit of trouble.. while P is incredibility immature, I beleive he almost certainly is smarter than most elementary school kids..

  150. batbird Says:

    BREAKING: Alberto Gonzales Resigns

    It’s Clinton’s fault.

On the bright side, it’s harder to envoke Executive Priviledge on a civilian.
Is Harriet Meyers locked up yet?

  151. Poor Widdle Troll Says:

It’s a rare talent who [Mr P] can throw scat with the best of them , and still post articulate arguments to the trolls on another level.

Plenty of intelligent people are nuts. Mr P is an asperger who can write a bunch of hooey [Like Jeff Goldstein] and make it seem like they know what they are talking about when really they just have good memories and spout whatever they read. The little proffesors.

  152. It'sasadday Says:

  153. Swifty the Boat Says:

You have to respect Mr. Gonzales’ decision to resign. After all, he did protect our country from terrorists, foreign (like alkaida), and domestic (like al-Leahy).

  154. OxyCon Says:

  155. williamf Says:

You can go on and pick sides…this one is better than that one and such but in my opinion, and everybody’s got one, they (the pols) are all the same. It doesn’t matter which party. Shit in shit out. That’s it.
