Rep. Porter points out the ‘danger of blogs.’

Rep. Jon Porter (R-NV) on his distaste for blogs:

jonporter.jpg Asked if he supports a federal shield law for the press, he said he did. However, the problem is how to protect legitimate reporters when there are web logs, “blogs,” whose authors can defame and lie with impunity because they can be anonymous and don’t have to worry about the facts.

“I would like to strengthen the legitimate news sources. I’m very concerned about blogs and even some radio. They can hide behind a shield law but they are not legitimate news sources,” the congressman said.

During his first of eight stops in town he spoke to the Laughlin Rotary Club and pointed out the danger of blogs.

Porter said during the course of a day he reads an average of four newspapers.

He should start with the news programs on the tube that are equally unconcerned with facts. Of course “facts” is a partisan thing.

  3. ForTruth says:

Yeah, Forbes magazine thinks blogs are dangerous too. Just look at all the folks who think blogs are dangerous, they have things they don’t want people to know. Blogs are dangerous for the people who perceive them as dangerous. Like this guy. Blogs will probably help shine truth on this guy too.

  4. Loonie says:

A danger for the likes of him, maybe.

  5. ForTruth says:

I must be wrong, but I’ve never heard one Democrat complain about blogs. Only Repukes and rich guys complain about blogs. Hmmmm.

  6. Toss these losers says:

Well it could have been worse. Instead of 4 newspapers he could be getting his reality check from 4 hrs. of FauxNews.

Reichwingers like this are just pissed because they haven’t yet figured out a way to manipulate blogs like they do the MSM.

“…defame and lie with impunity because they can be anonymous and don’t have to worry about the facts … They can hide behind a shield law but they are not legitimate news sources”

This is a guy whose main supporting rag is the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a paper that I’ve seen insert right-wing revisionism in straight news (from a 2002 front-page story, paraphrased: ‘…after Congressional Republicans succeeded in balancing the federal budget…’).

I’m very concerned about blogs and even some radio.

Hmmmm. He wouldn’t be referring to Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck, et. al., would he?

Naw. They don’t “defame and lie with impunity”, do they?

  10. 1970cs says:

How many anonymous sources are used in the stories he reads in those 4 newspapers are used to sway opinion or dis-credit an opponent?

Indeed. In fact, FauxSnooze won a court case saying they didn’t have any responsibility to actually tell the truth.

Does Rep. Porter have something he’s hiding like the rest of his GOP partners. If so I don’t blame him for not wanting it to come out. So far the GOP has perverts and molesters. Yes others are paying prostitutes for services. The crime wave in the GOP is higher then it’s ever been in the history of the United States. If only the media were the only form of information than the lies could continue but it’s the blog that gives the truth to the American people. The White House doesn’t have enough money to pay off all blog sites and most blogs sites can’t be brought by the corrupt White House.

Who are these “anonymous” bloggers he’s talking about? Us?

Because I don’t know of any mainstream blogs where the AUTHORs are anonymous. Is anyone confused about the identity of the author of the Huffington post? What about Daily Kos or even here, in TP?

Does anyone know of any blogs where the authors are anonymous?

What do these blog critics mean when they say anonymous?

Are they confusing the authors with the commenters?

Bloggers mainly express their own opnion..and it is sad that this Congressman seems to be threatened by bloggers.
If it was not for bloggers, most tainted news comes from the so called ‘legitimate reporters’ are not worthy reading.

…”The crime wave in the GOP is higher then it’s ever been in the history of the United States.””

This is like a perfect statement. Because, it’s 100% TRUE!! The last Congress that just “retired” in 2006 was, at least to date, the most corrupt Congress in the history of the US!! And, of them, 99.9% GOP. And, the fallout continues, as the crime wave continues to rage through the Executive and Judicial units, which is where it appears to have begun.

I think it’s caving in on them though, which is generally what happens to all but the smartest criminals.

About the definition of the blog thing, thats what I’d like to know. Where are these, “anonymous blogs” he’s talking about? Does anyone know of a blog where the authors are anonymous?

Its a straw argument. Its a fake position he’s taking. Blogs are not anonymous. Oh sure, the commenters are. But the Blogger, the person writing the story, seldom is.

Its a bs statement that the authors can lie and defame with impunity because they are anonymous. That is a LIE. Because the authors names are on every blog I’ve been too so far, including this one.

During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so. After the appeal verdict WTVT general manager Bob Linger commented, “It’s vindication for WTVT, and we’re very pleased… It’s the case we’ve been making for two years. She never had a legal claim.”

  96. Bruce Gorton says:

    As to blogs being dangerous:

America’s news media has lost its credibility in its bid to try and appear “fair and balanced.” Note the lack of the word “honest” in that philosophy and you will start to see my point.

“Fair and balanced” is a values judgement – and the news is there to provide facts, not judgements. If the facts reflect badly on conservatives, which they normally do, then there should be no requirement to balance them with an editorial which reflects badly on liberals, and vice versa.

Americans look to me to be sick to death of the news trying to tell them what to think, what Americans really want is news which provides the facts. Less editorial, less fluff and more fact seems to me to be what Americans want, and Americans are finding more of that on the blogs, even with their lack of a code of ethics, then on the news.

  97. Chris Whitt says:
