Sen. Larry Craig arrested, pleads guilty.

Roll Call reports today that Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport for “lewd conduct” in a men’s public restroom. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to “misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He “paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation.” The arresting officer’s report explains:

larrycraig.jpg My experience has shown that individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall. From my seated position, I could observe the shoes and ankles of Craig seated to the left of me. [...]

At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area.

UPDATE: Larry Craig called Bill Clinton “a bad boy, a naughty boy” in 1999.

More details than we really need here, we know this poor fool is done for politically. Senator, please resign and do your self a favor.
Or, have the guy in the next stall do you a favor.

  5. Chris L Says:

Okay, so what is going to be the right-wing take on this? Defer to "Cold Cash Jefferson", or say that liberals are gay bashing? At least the Senator plead guilty, so this doesn't have to be another long, drawn out, Tom Delay, Bob Ney, Duke Cunningham, Mark Foley thing.

  6. Chris L Says:

Where is Zooey? She will eat this up!

  7. yikes Says:

At first, I thought this story was about the Republican who offered an undercover cop $20 to give him a blow job in a public restroom. But now I realize that was Republican Congressman Bob Allen who was busted a couple of months ago. This involves yet another Republican restroom escapade. There are so many of these now I can't keep track anymore.

  74. Bob Says:

    Clinton did lewd conduct too!!!

  75. Jackie Says:

GOP Religious values continued. Now the people of Idaho are represented by a Senator who performs
“lewd conduct”. The numbers keep climbing with the GOP and their sick actions. Is this the new definition of US Republican Christian Values. Fingers Foley had alot of friends that were just as sick as he is, who's next.

  76. Tom Says:

I am a constituent of Senator Craig's. In my several letters to him, he has always responded in a condescending way, not addressing the issues I raised. The letters written by me to him were respectful and courteous, however, he seemed to always act like he knew better than me, that he was morally superior.

Craig has now proven what I have known for many years. He is a fraud. More interested in power than doing the will of the people of Idaho.

  117. Dermot Says:

    Look at Craig's voting record

A quick review of his voting record above shows a pattern where any bill with the word 'ban' in it he voted for.

Any bill that gave people power - marriage, stem cell research - he voted against

So he's about keeping power to a small group that includes himself. That's what white male Republicans are about - keeping power within an elite circle and keeping power away from everyone else

Republican logic 101: A republican soliciting sex from an undercover police officer is much better than two democrats having consensual sex. One is worth impeachment, the other is an actual crime. Watch, after his 10 days in jail he will be welcomed back to the senate by his fellow repubs.

I in no way mean to defend Senator Craig, especially in view of the fact that he has repeatedly voted to make gays second-class citizens.

But as long as society continues to consider homosexuality shameful and indecent, some gay men will engage in illicit behavior to obtain sexual gratification. Many gays feel they are forced to live in the shadows, that they are by definition "sick immoral perverts" anyway, and live their lives accordingly.

The stigma on homosexuality needs to be lifted, homophobia needs to be eradicated, so that more healthy and safe methods for gays to meet and "hook up" will become the norm.

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper — August 27, 2007 @ 8:06 pm

I think it's the "closet" part that explains it. If you are ashamed of your homosexuality and you wish to hide it, you do things that are not stereotypically gay. You drive a big truck, you talk tough, and you affiliate yourself with the party of "family values". This is how a closeted individual attempts to stay in the closet.

What this really shows is that if a person has reached tle level of depravity where he could engage in homosexual activities, he will have no compunctions about lying about it when convenient for him to do so. 307. trueblue Says:

  308. trueblue Says:

Anger is always concerned with individuals,...whereas hatred is directed also against classes:We all hate any thief and any informer.
Morover, anger can be cured by time; but hatred cannot. The one aims at giving pain to its object, the other at doing him harm; the angry man wants his victim to feel; the hater does not mind whether they feel or not.

Absolutely. And you will notice that I put "family values" in quotes, because, of course, the "family values" crowd is not really about family values at all. They are about hate; the ostracism of family members who happen to be gay and the resulting higher suicide rate amongst the gay population; and the denial of the right of gay couples to share in the benefits of family status.

Radio egotist Michael Savage is currently using his show today to defend Craig, saying [Savage] thinks it's a left-wing set-up as it happened in a Minnesota airport. Savage may be being toungue-in-cheek when he says this, but he postulates that Craig was simply tapping his feet to Beethoven or some Swing or Jazz tune and accidentally...Yeh, right!

True. Libs actually value families for real, while conservofreaks merely use families as a symbol, much as they use the flag.

"Undermining the 'family values' crowd" really means "undermining hypocrites". It does not mean "undermining families" or "undermining family values".

And of course you have it completely backwards.

A society that values its members, regardless of sexual orientation, produces individuals with healthy and productive means of expressing themselves. The shattering of self esteem, the lack of inclusiveness, is what contributes to the anti-social behavior of some.

I have a wide circle of gay friends whose sexual activities I am familiar with. Through the support of friends and family, almost all of them have risen above the humiliation heaped on them by bigotry and religion, and do not engage in behaviors which are illegal.

Sorry, if the group is immoral, and it's very hard to argue that the GOP isn't thoroughly immoral, then each member has to assume his responsibility. The GOP is full of perverts such as Craig, and more will be exposed as we head towards the elections, because perverts can't help themselves, no matter what's at stake. Clinton was sandbagged by Republican operatives, plain and simple. Linda Tripp and Monica Lewinsky were on the RATwing payroll, and the GOP spent $70 million taxpayer dollars, to come up with a consensual blowjob between two adults. There is NO comparison, and bringing up Marc Rich just raises the question of his lawyer, Scooter Libby, who begged Clinton for the pardon; begged. This is the GOP hypocrisy at work, night and day, so save it for somebody as clueless as you are. Take it to Redsate, they're pretty f*cking stupid over there.

The guy who broke this story at Roll Call appeared on Dan Abrams' show and said that it appeared Craig DID have a lawyer involved in this. He said Craig was arrested in June and only pleaded to the charges on August 8th. Craig requested time, according to the guy from Roll Call, in order to show the charging documents to his lawyer for advice. Craig spent more than one month mulling over how and whether he should plead to the charges or fight it in court. I find it inconceivable that a U.S. Senator would not run this by his lawyer before committing himself to a guilty plea.

Aristotle is generally credited with developing the seminal system of rhetoric that "thereafter served as its touchstone" [1], influencing the development of rhetorical theory from ancient through modern times. The Rhetoric is regarded by most rhetoricians as "the most important single work on persuasion ever written." [2] Gross & Walzer concur, indicating that, just as Whitehead considered all philosophy a footnote to Plato, "all subsequent rhetorical theory is but a series of responses to issues raised" by Aristotle's Rhetoric. [3]

He also thought his assertion that it was a "minor work" couldn't be debunked.

One. It's not "The Rhetoric". It's simply "Rhetoric".

Two, as "the most important single work on persuasion ever written" (according to Golden, James L., Goodwin F. Berquist, William E. Coleman, Ruth Golden, & J.Michael Sproule (eds.). (2007). The rhetoric of Western thought: From the Mediterranean world to the global setting, 9th ed. Dubuque, IA (USA): p.67.), Rhetoric is hardly a "minor work".

  463. Roy Says:

As a Mormon Bishop, Mitt Romney had (or still has) the resources to refer his buddy Craig to curative electroshock therapy like that adminstered in the basement of the BYU student center in the past. Sensors are attached to the genitalia and if there is the wrong response to the homosexual ponography, a shock is adminstered to the arms, hands or wrists. If there is the correct response to the hetrosexual ponography shown, there is no shock (I wonder which Mormons went out and bought the ponography?) Or maybe if Craig prefers, the Reverend Dobson could have him "cured" in three weeks like Ted Haggard.

  464. The Shadow Says:

The Republicans may as well all, "Come out of the closet", they are all gays who used gay bashing to advance in politics. Not that there is anything wrong with being gay. If Senator Craig doesn't have the guts to admit he's gay, then he can stay in that hot closet and sweat it out. Being married doesn't mean a thing to gay men, they just live a double life until they get caught. Then they claim they pleaded guilty to a crime they didn't commit. The person who said Karl Rove is gay is probably right. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes out now that he's a private citizen again. Rush Limpbaugh is gay too. He's a cross dresser from way back. Why do you think he smokes such BIG cigars? It's not because he likes them, he's just practicing for later.

    Who knows? The shadow knows!

  465. impeachy keen Says:

But I bet the pressure for him to be gone TOMORROW will be intense from the GOP.

    Adios, LIAR.

  469. Keith Says:

    Conservatives never seem to comprehend:

Since their candidates run on the campaign platform: "Vote for Me---I don't have the wrong type of Sex and my evil opponent Does",

Then what Craig and the dozens of other conservatives did is outrageous hypocrisy while Barney Frank or Bill Clinton getting caught is not. Because their campaign platform was not "I am morally superior sexually to my opponent".

You were asked by someone else (Zooey, I think) to provide reliable documents that Clinton raped some women. Since you haven't and probably can't, please STFU already!

  471. Christopher Witmer Says:

    Egreggious wrote:
A society that values its members, regardless of sexual orientation, produces individuals with healthy and productive means of expressing themselves. The shattering of self esteem, the lack of inclusiveness, is what contributes to the anti-social behavior of some. I have a wide circle of gay friends whose sexual activities I am familiar with. Through the support of friends and family, almost all of them have risen above the humiliation heaped on them by bigotry and religion, and do not engage in behaviors which are illegal.

Egreggious, I don't single out homosexual acts as somehow uniquely immoral; all sex outside of marriage is immoral and people who engage in immoral behavior try to hide the facts of what they are doing; hence, they become liars. In the broadest sense, one does not need to become a homosexual to become a sodomite. As an example, Bill Clinton showed himself to be cut from essentially the same cloth, even if he never engaged in sex with a man. Most of modern society can be called "Sodom" and most moderns are "sodomites" because they have the heart of a sodomite. Whether that is manifested in "dignifying" one's self by shoving one's reproductive organ up another man's rectum, or by sleeping with the neighbor's wife, the destructive effects on the perpetrator's soul are the same. Immoral behavior is self-destructive behavior, regardless of whether or not it happens to be technically legal. (Don't make the mistake of equating legality with morality -- there are plenty of currently legal things that are inherently immoral, and homosexual acts are among them.)

Only a society characterized by love of our Creator is a society that can truly value its members, because each person is created in the image of God, and that fact necessarily limits the range and forms of legitimate self-expression. Homosexual acts can never be legitimate because they do not properly image God. God created human beings to manifest TRUE queerness, not the faux queerness, the pseudo-queerness of homosexuality. Because homosexuality is a love of sameness; indeed, it is primarily a LOVE OF SELF, and it is love of self that motivates all sexual immorality. The queerness that God calls man to is the queerness of a man loving a woman -- now there's a genuine difference! There's true diversity! -- and furthermore God calls us to monogamous, life-long faithfulness in the context of marriage. That is absolutely the queerest thing anyone ever heard of: look at all the people who can't seem to make a marriage work. Yes, life-long marriage between one man and one woman, with no sex outside of that relationship, is almost the queerest thing anyone could think of, and it is that queerness that God calls us to. About the only thing queerer than that is a God who loves sinful human beings so much that He willingly sacrifices Himself on a cross for their sakes.

You and your wide circle of gay friends are wilfully ignorant fools (because you ought to know better, but refuse to) and I call you to repentance. Come out and join in the only truly gay and for sure the queerest life anyone could ever imagine -- a life peacefully reconciled to our Creator and Savior and His created order. The truth shall set you free . . .

I didn't know that Newt Gingrich, Henry Hyde, Bob Barr, Senator Vitter, Rudy Giuliani, Robert Livingstone--just to name a few--are liberals. Speaking about cheating on one's wife, Boob!
You still haven't explained what male hooker Jeff Gannon was doing all those nights in the WH, or provided the names of the women Clinton supposedly raped, because you obviously can't. So now you're trying to divert the discussion to mention of the mayor of LA, whose name you misspelled, BTW. Sorry, Boob, but it only shows how lame your piss-posts are.

    2) who the hell wants any sexual activity, in a mens room? Hell, I have anxiety attacks when I'm doing my duty there (call it restroomaphobia, but I prefer my privacy, thank you very much)

"And how many stories has RedState run on Jeff Gannon, the State Senator arrested for a similar bathroom incident in Florida, etc.?"

"But I did see that story on the liberal Huffington Post, which often cross-references to TP."

We aren't talking about the Huffington Post. Also I am suprised they reference TP....seems pretty risky most of the time.

I have never even been to the RedState web site. Never even heard of it. You must cruise the blogs alot more that I do. Do you have a link to the story where Gannon was arrested in Florida of what you say?

  493. Bob Says:

    Foot tapping is illegal? obsene?

    TP so puritanical.

  494. Bob Says:

Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct.

    -----------------------------------------------

Oh how evil and vile that foot tapping Larry boy.
Lock him up before he gets to the children.
    Save the children!

  495. Bob Says:

"When Clinton lied, no one died".

"When Larry tapped, I was takin' a crap".

  496. a wallace Says:

I can't believe the amount of HOMOPHOBIA in the above posts, this is a bunch of @@@@@ everyone of the above posters have probably done something similar at some point, by something similar I mean stretching tapping or adjusting, this is so off the wall to be highly questionable!!! And I am not a fan and never have been a fan of Sen Craig. All I am seeing is knee jerk homophobia.

  497. a wallace Says:

administrator1: your comment is something out the '50's, it shows the shallowness of your understanding of being gay. Wake up, as in a previous comment, tapping your foot, lewd and lascivious, they get away with it because it no one fights the system and wins. That's also why entrapment works, period! And I've never been a supporter of Craig's politics, in some wyas he's hoist by his own petard. But questions still have to be mnade as to lthe legitimacy of the whole police action!

  498. williamf Says:

It's the toilet room that just makes ya wanna scream. A Senator can't do any better than look for whatever in the can? He could have shown a little more discretion and intelligence.

  499. CJ Says:

Its amazing that senators like him would vote to ban gays from doing something respectable and decent like get married! But its just fine to hook up in a scummy public bathroom! I get it...keep'em hiding in the scummy latrines, unmarried and unrespected, so you don't limit the opportunity for republicans to get "serviced" whenever they want...its like keeping people oppressed for one's own pleasure. Sick . I think they get off on the fact that THEY have coined it as sinful...it turns them on. Gays are like republicans' and fundamentalist preachers' sex slaves, "Focus on the Family" the "bossman" that whips them into "staying in the kitch-"--oops, I mean "bathroom"...

  500. CJ Says:

If I could interview the man, I'd ask this: "So let me get this straight (no pun)...gays can't get married or have rights that other people have, but they should feel free to blow you in public bathrooms...?"

  501. CJ Says:

...and by the way, Witmer, that crap about legitimacy/God's image...lovely how you Christians write and re-write your own book and call it "truth." Did you not hear how gay marriage WAS legitimate 600 years ago in Europe? Did you not even read the VATICAN's OWN historical records about Edict of Nantes, etc., when numerous times through history (esp. 800 A.D. and the 1300's, when there were three popes...) a bunch of men re-wrote the bible? Uhhh, yeah, dude...apparently, Mary wasn't a virgin until hundreds of years after the original "bible" was written. I have a holy bridge I'd love to sell ya...ignorant cretan. If you lived in the middle east, you'd probably be lined up and eager to be a suicide bomber.

  502. bill Says:

He wasn't busted for foot tapping, he was busted for foot tapping, then putting his foot against the other guys, and then putting his hand under the stall wall (which for you who don't know, is generally the signal for the person wanting to "give"), it was a series of signals. And this guy has been under rumors for a long time.

As far as Bill Clinton goes, at least he wasn't hypocritical. While he wasn't that much a friend to gays while in office (he gave the country the DOMA act, which is probably unconstitutional since states have the right to define marriage, not the feds) he wasn't this pious, I am with the Lord type either. Craig voted straight religious right, cited his family values, his faith, you name in lockstep with the other GOP'ers.

And while politicians of all stripes have done immoral things (give me a break, people like Rayburn, Fulbright, Wilbur Mills, Bob Barr, Henry Hyde, Nixon, all had affairs, had sexual flings, etc to show you the bipartisan nature) when you have a member of a political party who practically has done everything but change their name to "Hezbollah" ("party of God" in English), whose major agenda has been to appease religious conservatives, and when members like Craig and Allen who vote and publicly demonize gays and others in the religious right crosshairs they take in one level lower, because then their hypocrisy is obvious, that the GOP is no more moral then the Dems, that it might apppeal to the racists and the religious right bigots as a political maneuver but in practice they are just as scummy as any other politician.

If the religious right keeps falling for this, then they really are stupid, if they think any party is going to bring their heaven on earth, they really are deluded and mentally ill.

And honestly, I have more sympathy for a Barney Frank, who had affairs with pages, then for this bag of crap from Idaho, because Frank never put himself out there as some sort of pious saint of a politician.

Boob, repeating the same post doesn't mean you answered any questions or supplied any requested links. You didn't.

  504. CJ Says:

Oh, and BOB, people HAVE died because Craig lied. Instead of being truthful and speaking up, he sided with intolerance, added to it through his words and voting records, and thus contributed to the loss of jobs, family, respect, and even lives. He may not have directly physically gay-bashed, but he helped maintain the atmosphere, the bigotry, and the oppression that leads to it. And btw, that phrase you are using originally applied to Bush's lies, so I am at a loss as to why you are trumpeting it. I guess it just goes to show you can give a Republican any senseless phrase and they will repeat it, like a parrot...with no thought at all. No one teach you critical thinking? Methinks you were a "child left behind."

  505. Lora Says:

I have never even been to the RedState web site. Never even heard of it. You must cruise the blogs alot more that I do. Do you have a link to the story where Gannon was arrested in Florida of what you say?
    Comment by Tracy — August 28, 2007 @ 11:49 am

You either have a bad memory or are lying, because I pointed out to you previously on TP that some bloggers here have claimed to have been banned on RedState, and your reply was to the effect that I should demand proof. I have looked at RedState maybe twice in the past year. Unlike you, a frequent troll, I don't spend much time on sites I dislike.
I didn't say that Gannon was arrested in Florida. I mentioned a Florida State Senator who was arrested for pandering to a man in a public toilet--the one who headed McCain's campaign there. I specifically wrote:“And how many stories has RedState run on Jeff Gannon, the State Senator arrested for a similar bathroom incident in Florida, etc.?”
I see that you can interpret the comma after Gannon's name as part of a modifier for what follows, but the "etc." at the end of the sentence implies that there are more similar stories (of GOP sex scandals). Besides, don't you even know that Gannon is not a State Senator?

  506. CJ Says:

Just saw that assertion of Bob's re. Clinton as a serial rapist...wow, where were you when the team of republican lawyers were trying to take him down? Clearly you have some evidence that they are unaware of! Gee, you should be a lawyer--oops, I forgot, you actually have to be willing to exert yourself mentally. Bit of an obstacle for you, eh? Its funny how people vote republican--often against their own financial interests--because someone implied they'd be a girlie-man if they voted dem/liberal. Thank god the steel mill workers and early union men weren't as insecure about their manhood as modern men, or we'd still have wages and work conditions like China--the Pinkerton soldiers could have just called the picketers girlie men and been done with the whole thing. So Bob, wht exactly do you get out of voting republican? I have a funny feeling you are not a corporate CEO with big tax deductions...

  507. Zep Tepi Says:

I specifically wrote:“And how many stories has RedState run on Jeff Gannon, the State Senator arrested for a similar bathroom incident in Florida, etc.?”

I think, perhaps, you are thinking, Lora, of Bob Allen, An McCainAide.
