Today, on MSNBC, Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) was asked to respond to the news that his colleague, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID), had pled guilty to a misdemeanor involving ‘lewd conduct’ in a public restroom. “It is not good,” said Brownback. “There is a guilty plea involved in this. But I think we ought to look and see what the facts actually are.” “This seems like a very odd thing that takes place. And so what is actually going on here?” Watch it:
Transcript:
QUESTION: Well, let me also ask you then about the scandal of today, at least, that came down last night involving Senator Larry Craig. He stepped down from his role in the Romney presidential campaign.
How big of a setback do you believe this is — Not only for Mr. Craig, but also, again, for the GOP?
BROWNBACK: Well, I want to see what the factual basis actually is. I read the news accounts this morning. I’ve been briefed on those. I want to see what the actual, factual setting of this is.
It is not good. There is a guilty plea involved in this. But I think we ought to look and see what the facts actually are and then build and move forward off of that.
QUESTION: What more than the police report facts are you waiting for?
Are you waiting to hear something more specific from Senator Craig?
BROWNBACK: I am. Larry’s a colleague. He is somebody that I know. I want to hear what he has to say. I want to read, if we can, more in depth on the police report and what the police say actually took place at this. I want to know: Why did he plead guilty if he did not feel like this was actually what took place; that there was lewd conduct that took place?
I want to hear the actual settings — and I think most Americans probably do — of this. This seems like a very odd thing that takes place. And so what is actually going on here?
Let’s see this develop some more and I think we should.
I want to read, if we can, more in depth on the police report and what the police say actually took place at this. I want to know: Why did he plead guilty if he did not feel like this was actually what took place; that there was lewd conduct that took place?

Here comes the swift boating of the police, in 3, 2, 1,...
and not the swifty boating, or dufus dhowing...
August 28th, 2007 at 1:53 pmOdd? Then you and Craig are Even, Mr. Brownback.

August 28th, 2007 at 1:55 pmyeah, but what about clinton?
Article in today's Idaho Statesman about the many accusations against Senator Craig over the years about his homosexuality, going back to his college days. There are allegations of previous sexual activities with men in public restrooms. And there's Craig's involvement in the pedophile scandal in the Reagan White House in the 1980s concerning Congressional Pages. Craig apparently married his wife just after that pedophile scandal broke into the news:

August 28th, 2007 at 2:00 pmI want to know: Why did he plead guilty if he did not feel like this was actually what took place; that there was lewd conduct that took place?
It's a common problem in most large cities. Closeted, perverted homosexuals go onto the internet and find places to "hook-up". Usually public restrooms, public parks etc.
Apparently, there's a protocol that's adhered to which is the mark of "guilt" among law enforcement. Sad really.

August 28th, 2007 at 2:03 pmI'm laughing so hard I can't breathe well. Oh boy. Resign you ass. And tell your butt boy Vitter to take the same way out. or do Republicans only resign if they can be guaranteed a republican will be appointed in their place?
August 28th, 2007 at 2:05 pmThe Repugs aren't going to sweat over this one. Another repug will be appointed to the position, so they can pontificate all they want.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:05 pmBrownback, you are an idiot. What more do you want? Are you going to try to say that the police set him up? If that's true, then why did he plead guilty (two months after the arrest)? Was he pressured to plead guilty? If so, why did it take two months for him to enter the plea? And what pressure could anyone have put on him to plead guilty.
I expect what happened is that he tried to negotiate a deal where he plead guilty and that case was sealed so that no one would ever know what he did. But then someone leaked it to the press and now he is trying to say "I didn't do it, I was pressured into pleading guilty". Too bad, so sad. He got caught, he plead guilty, end of story.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:05 pmIt's those stress positions and interrogation techniques those awful police officers used! They threatened to flush my Bible down the toilet unless I confessed! And those awful police dogs! The officer said he would stomp on all my Bette Midler cds unless I signed the confession.

I think gay people are cool. I consider myself pretty liberal when it comes to sex. It takes a lot to creep me out.
But, I think this story has done it.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:07 pmWhat would be really interesting is if Craig resigned and when they held a special election, a Democrat won. That would really be sending a message to the Republicans if a Democrat won in Idaho.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:08 pmAnd what facts are those? Ones he is gonna make up? Are his lawyers and advisers making up crap excuses for him? You betcha, they are. After all he is a Repukian closet gay hypocrit. So many perverts are Repukes that it is laughable. Explains alot about the troll repukian scum on this site...makes you wonder.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:10 pmCraig was probably water-boarded to force his confession. Are you listening, Darth Cheney? See. This is the kind of false information that is obtained through torture.

For the details, see:
August 28th, 2007 at 2:20 pm"Behind the Right's Double Standard on Craig and Vitter."
This will be remembered as the week another republican candidate dropped out of the race.
Senator Brownback is ignoring the police report, ignoring the guilty plea and wants to hear Craig's story.
Evidence be damned, the republicans need to stand by republicans.

A Democrat winning a senate race in Idaho? Ha ha ha -- that would be about as likely as Massachusetts electing a Republican governor!
Oh, wait -- they did...
I guess anything's possible.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:29 pmLibtards are still very bitter about their hero-god Clinton being exposed.
Bitterness has been a cancer to Dems.

August 28th, 2007 at 2:31 pmMr. Craig can't just quit! How will he pay the mortage, collect unemployment benefits?
Let's allow everyone to keep their full-time job. As long as the senator is effectively punching-in the views of the voters who put him in office, who cares if he's a hypocrite in his private time?
This was a posting from a concerned citizen.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:31 pmThe Silver Lining on the Bathroom Stall
Oy. Republicans really don't need bad publicity like Senator Larry Craig right now. I'm sure the nutroots are in full gay-bashing mode right now. That whole thing is just really sad and creepy (and thus extra bad for the Romney campaign with which Craig was associated; they already had problem with the "creepy" label). I guess Republicans can at least take solace in the face that when this sort of thing happens, we tend to get them out of office.
That's why we shouldn't stand for Democrats to say a word about this, because who do they have in office right now? There a globular, drunken mass that drove a car into a river and left a woman to die while he ran for his lawyer. There the guy who had a male prostitution ring ran out of his apartment. More recently, there's the guy with bribe money in his freezer. And which party has a former Klansman as Senator?
See, at least we can say about the Republicans is that, when one of them does lewd conduct in a public restroom, it's news. With Democrats, that's a dog bites man story right there. Really, no one can be a Democrat politician and have any morals because then they wouldn't be able to work with most of their colleagues. The only criticism Democrats can say to Republicans is, "That's what you get for having morals! You should all be freaks like us! Freeeeeaks!"
Maybe that could be made into a new slogan:
"The Republican Party: We get rid of our weirdos."
August 28th, 2007 at 2:31 pmYou gotta have really big balls to have a wide stance.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:31 pmSen Ted Kennedy yea a perfect liberal example...
August 28th, 2007 at 2:35 pmwait, does that mean a pardon from Bush is forthcoming?
Comment by grover nerdqquist — August 28, 2007 @ 2:29 pm
No -- Idaho is a safe Republican state. If Craig goes, the governor will appoint a Republican to replace him, and any special election would likely produce a Republican replacement.
If Craig was from a state where he was likely to be replaced by a Democrat, it would be a different story.
Bush only cares about the Dem/Repub balance in the Senate -- I doubt that he cares about any particular Senator (except maybe one who owes him a lot of political favors).
August 28th, 2007 at 2:35 pmSen. Robert KKK Byrd another fine example of....liberal virtue
August 28th, 2007 at 2:36 pmGood thing Kennedy and Byrd never run on "family values" :)
August 28th, 2007 at 2:38 pmFrank J-
What about Vitter? Oh yeah, the Repugs ONLY get rid of weirdos when it won't cost them a seat. There's your twisted morals for you. If the Repubs got rid of all there "weirdos" there would be nothing but empty seats on that side of the floor. The bathroom wouldt be standing/kneeling room only, though.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:39 pm"I want to hear the actual settings"
I bet Brownback would like to see the actual setting as well. Maybe hang out a little while. Do some of his own research.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:40 pm"now, randi does not like ed much… and she really is very shy…
i can’t see those two debating… besides, they are on the same side…"
Hi Katy - I was talking about Randi debating Hannity. She would annihilate him.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:40 pmBob's way of defending Craig is to divert to any other subject. Direct from "Kap'n Karl's konfuse your opponent handbook".
Ignore the Republican Senator soliciting for man on man love in an airport restoom and throw any crud out about anyone else.
Family values haven't been practiced by the republicans for some time now.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:42 pmWhy does everyone pretend that Craig is one bad apple. GOP sex scandals are the norm these days. For God sakes, Vitter is still in office.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:44 pmGawd you trolls are so pathetic. In order to defend your perverts you bring up every past sin in the Democratic party. Like that somehow makes what your guys are doing as right. It's like when Bush does something wrong, your response is "Clinton did it too". Well, wrong is wrong no matter who did it. And the Democrats do not defend the people in their party who do wrong. Have you seen any Democrat make excuses for Jefferson? They did everything they could except for kicking him out, and that is not within their rights. If it was, I believe they would have kicked him out already. Jefferson is an embarrassment to the Democrats and they would love to see him gone. The Republicans don't seem to find Vitter an embarrassment./ Why is that?
August 28th, 2007 at 2:45 pmHey Frank J. you must have just woken up from your 10 year hibernation??? Or do you just ignore any scandal that involves someone with an (R) after their name. And it is true about only a Repub replacing Craig, I am from Idaho and they would never appoint a Dem as replacement unless he was a good ole boy like them.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:50 pmBob...you forgot to mention Woodrow Wilson's scandal involving Edith Bolling Galt. He started having an affair with her only a few months after his first wife died. Don't forget Woodrow Wilson while you're investigating ancient history. And what about David and Bathsheba's scandalous affair?
August 28th, 2007 at 2:51 pmI was wondering why we did not see a lot more of this during the first six years of the republican controlled congress. Sounds like there was a lot of covering up going on.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:52 pm"It's odd. You know, a wide stance is important in football. It helps maintain your balance. Maybe he settles onto the pot that way. I don't know." - Brownback
August 28th, 2007 at 2:53 pmWhy does such hypocrisy seem to florish in the Republican party?
The answer is simple. They Republican elite do not care about morals, philosophy or the common good. The Republican elite seeks power within government in order to subvert the government to the needs of wealthy families and corporate interests. The Republicans do not believe in law or order. They believe in a crude form of social Darwinism. The Republican elite are nothing more than cheap whores that will do whatever is necessary to serve their masters and to gain financial advantage for themselves.
The Republican elite do not believe in family values for other than political posturing. Thus it is not unusual for these amoral politicians to act as Sen. Craig. Indeed, it is an expression of their own belief that the rules do not apply to them and strokes their egos as persons above others.

No Republicans advocated sending troops to Rwanda. When Clinton sent troops to restore democracy in Haiti or stop the 250,000 deaths that occurred in ex-Yugoslavia under GHWB, all Republicans yelled he was trying to distract from Monica and he was going to get our troops killed. Zero troops were killed.

mmmm...well, there's my congressman, who lives in washington with his male campaign manager and--oh god--chief of staff, while his wife and family stay at home in the district. The ex male wrestling coach.
Yeah, him.
August 28th, 2007 at 3:43 pmBrownback's response is typical Repugnicunt, "I can't really comment until I know the facts" (even though the puke pleaded guilty, then after all is out on the table, they don't want to dwell on the past, let's move forward.
There is no "proper" time to discuss the issues, there is no accountability.
Hypocritical bastards.
I think there's some hypocrite virus that is spread on the bottom of collection plates. So many of the truly disgusting hypocrites are Christian. All Bush supporters are the 25% Born Agains. Born, but with a little stub on the end of the spinal cord where the brain is supposed to develop.

August 28th, 2007 at 3:45 pmBrownback wants to wait for the facts...
Mr. Brownback : Senator Craig already admitted guilt and on record he pleaded 'guilty'.
August 28th, 2007 at 3:46 pmI'm surprised not to see any links to the police report on The Smoking Gun (nice accidental double-entendre for this incident).
August 28th, 2007 at 4:02 pmGood thing Kennedy and Byrd never run on “family values†:)
Comment by Bob — August 28, 2007 @ 2:38 pm
precisely! i don't believe clinton made a big issue of it either. you see, family values are just that - a family matter. unlike you lemmings, we aren't fooled by hypocritical sacks of sh*t who campaign on "family values" or fear.
and btw, Blob, just how is clinton directly responsible for the death of 800K ruwandans?
August 28th, 2007 at 4:45 pmWell, looks like the approach taken with Scooter Libby is going to be used on Sen. Craig--defame the legal bodies involved, accept the word of the guilty against the findings of the court, and then, well, probably a presidential pardon.
Unless Craig resigns.
But 'Thugs have found that hanging tough and stonewalling (even in the light of known facts) seems to work in this current MCM* climate.

August 29th, 2007 at 5:01 pmI must defend my honor, my hands were under that partition due to severe gas. I was simply trying to keep from being blasted into orbit.
As for my alleged footsie gestures, the stall was out of paper & I was signaling the guy next to me in the queer Morse code to please pass some paper. After all it was all I could do to hold myself down & that blast made a real big mess.
I didn't simply ask for some paper because I thought the guy sitting next to me was stone deaf after my horrendous explosion. That can happen when one forgets to remove the butt plug.
As for my business card I thought it would help the officer to spell my name correctly. I do want to thank him for not taking my twenty or checking my bags. He might have found my cordless drill for boring glory holes.
I'm a God fearing Christian family values man & I am not gay. Really I swear that I am not gay. The gas must have clouded my judgment.
Boo hoo hoo I want to take my confession back. It didn't spin right.
