Conservatives Begin Calling For Craig To Resign Over ‘Lewd Conduct’ And Guilty Plea
Yesterday, Roll Call revealed that Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) was arrested in June for “lewd conduct” in a public restroom at a Minnesota airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to “misdemeanor disorderly conduct.”
While Craig says the police misconstrued his actions and that he “should not have pled guilty,” pressure for him to resign is already beginning to mount in conservative circles.
On NBC’s Today Show this morning, former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer called Craig’s police report “creepy,” adding that “I don’t think Larry Craig can survive this.” Watch it:
Though Craig resigned yesterday from his position as Senate co-chairman of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, his spokesman, Sidney Smith, told the Associated Press yesterday that “it’s too early to talk” about his Senate future.
Smith’s comments have gone unheeded by prominent conservative bloggers, however, who have started shouting from their digital rooftops that Craig should resign immediately:
“Craig’s behavior is so reckless and repulsive that an immediate exit is required…He has to go.” - Hugh Hewitt
“I’m inclined to agree with Hugh Hewitt. The Senator did, after all, choose to plead guilty.” - Mark Steyn of National Review Online
“Hugh Hewitt calls for his resignation. At the least, he should confirm that he will not run again.” - Captain’s Quarters
“He’s a lying crapweasel. Should he resign? Well, yeah. If he cared about the dignity of his office, he would. But he obviously doesn’t, does he?” - Michelle Malkin
“He’s pled guilty. And we’re just finding out about it today. I can only say he must resign.” - Erick Erickson of Redstate
The GOP Senate leadership has refused to comment on Craig’s future thus far, only saying that they “just found out about this incident.”
“If they think this is going to be something that’s the same as (Rep.) Mark Foley — the sort of ‘drip, drip, drip, there’s more information that’s going to come out,’ Idaho-based political scientist Jasper LiCalzi told the AP. “They may try to push him out.”

Let me go on the record here, despite the schedenfreude. I think these bathroom sting operations are ridiculous and harassing. However, I am not about to forgive Craig or stop mocking him for his record against the gay-lesbian community. Hypocrisy. Fact is, he plead guilty to a crime and failed to disclose it at a minimum to his ethics committee. He got on his high horse about naughty bad boy Clinton readily enough. Karma is a byatch.

The biggest reason that Vitter is still in office is that the Louisianans still support him. If Craig has that kind of support from his consituents, then he should stay. If he doesn’t, then he should go.

I don’t think people should be having sex in public restrooms, so no I don’t think the mayor down in Florida should be run out of town. #92 - Clinton was accused of rape by one woman and sexual harrassment by at least two. He lied under oath and obstructed justice - that is why he was impeached. Please don’t be a hypocrite like Larry Craig.

You hypocrites spent 10 years and 80 million dollars invetigating every aspect of Bill Clinton’s life, if the accusations of rape and sexual harrasment had ANY validity to them Clinton would have been brought to trial by Starr. The charges of obstrtuction of Justice charge was thrown out of court when the judge, a conservative judge ruled that the lie was not germaine to case. He was impeached in the Senate and was found not guilty by the republicans. The reason you have such an offenisive screen name is you are a whiny hypocritical republican troll.

Actually, the unelected right wingers have been fooled for some time by the GOP. The list has grown by 7 since Mark Foley, heres two recent additions;
* Republican legislator Ted Klaudt was charged with raping girls under the age of 16.
* Republican city councilman Joseph Monteleone Jr. was found guilty of fondling underage girls.

As far as Craig himself goes — I object to his condemnation of adultery and homosexuality while practicing it, but I’m really not interested in his sex life.
Regarding the protests of similar arrests across the country — I am against restroom sting operations such as the one that caught Craig. I would think the police would have better things to do than sit in a restroom stall and wait to be “signaled”.
If sexual activity in a particular men’s room has become a nuisance, I support some monitoring — preferably by posting a very visible uniformed officer, just as you would to eliminate any nuisance in the community.
