The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank looks at the fitting departure of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales:
From “good morning” to “God bless America,” he spoke for all of one minute and 41 seconds — during which he managed to consult his written statement 26 times and to avoid saying a single word about the roiling scandals that finally forced him to quit. He entered the Justice Department conference room with a grin and departed without taking any of the questions shouted at his back:
“Why are you leaving?”
“Why now?”
“Why did you deny the resignation?”
Neither were the questions answered by Gonzales’s resignation letter, which the White House released later — complete with a grammatical error in the second sentence.
Good riddance gonzo
August 28th, 2007 at 9:44 amI never did get the rules about me and my or my ___ and I.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:45 amNot much of a story here, TP.
Where did Gonzo get his degree anyway? Does anyone know? Probably mail order.
Now that Fredo is gone, it’s time to reverse all of the anti-constitutional things he approved (which were totally illegal, BTW) like torture, illegal spying, etc. This guy has done more to destroy the rule of law in this country than anyone in the entire history of the country.
We all knew that the “Texas Two-Step Bunch” were nothing but sick, twisted, demonic puppets (Miers, Rove, Gonzo, et al)….time to set the sights on the next Texas Fraud sitting you know where!
August 28th, 2007 at 9:46 amHoly mother of crap. He used “I” when he should have used “me”. Scandalous!
August 28th, 2007 at 9:46 amThere is incorrect tense shift there too.
Should say, “After much thought and consideration, I have come to believe thatthis is the right time….”
Good riddance.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:48 amIf anyone really watched Gonzo’s appointment hearings, you’d have to have known back then that he was either a village idiot or just someone with a less than room temperature IQ. I don’t believe that I’ve ever heard this man utter an intelligent sentence during his tenure. Soooo many people thought “WTF” when he was confirmed….we all knew that he didn’t have an original thought in that empty cranium of his.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:48 amRU, you wouldn’t say, “it’s the right time for I”
August 28th, 2007 at 9:49 amSo you wouldn’t say, “it’s the right time for [my family and] I”
But you’re right, this is a ridiculous post. Many many people don’t know the proper way to use me and I. Or their, there or they’re for that matter.
#4 Even is his parting words, he managed to expose his lack of education and intelligence.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:49 amNow the last sentence of the article, does say a lot, metaphorically.
the Department of Justice plaque, suspended from the ceiling with the help of blue masking tape.

Our Constitution, dangling by its thumbs, recovering from its waterboarding.
Really? Of all the shit this guy pulled, we’re going to take issue with his GRAMMAR?!?!
August 28th, 2007 at 9:50 amThe fact that he was permitted to function in one of the most key positions in this country is downright frightening. One can only imagine what the level of intelligence is in other positions in this administration. I think we need to be scared right now….really scared.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:50 am#2, the rule is simple. Take out the “my family and” and see if the sentence reads well.
Try it. “After much thought and consideration, I believe that this is the right time for …. I to begin a new chapter….
Doesn’t work. Does it?
August 28th, 2007 at 9:50 amCompared to the Republicans’ deliberate adjectival use of “Democrat,” this subject/object pronoun misuse is pretty minor.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:51 ami’m with you, RU… i don’t get it…
i know it’s proper - family and me - but it sounds dumb…
the english language must be the hardest to learn…

August 28th, 2007 at 9:52 amAny one of the displaced Federal Judges that were fired by Rove & Gonzo would make an EXCELLENT replacement. You’d have to assume they each have a heightened awareness of fairness and Constitutionality, and its importance in our nation’s survival, in the aftermath of the criminality that led to their own ouster - and the attempt to politicize every FEDERAL agency.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:53 amOh come on, LOTS of people, including educated types, get the “I” vs “me” useage wrong. That is the least of the issues we should be talking about concerning the AG. At least he didn’t refer to himself as “myself”.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:53 amTo add to what #7 said, it should read, “I believe this is the right time for me and my family.”
That said, I’m sure TP knows this is a non-story, but it’s a nice little jab at a guy who’s been helping to ruin this country. Also, in a way, it helps illustrate that this guy isn’t that bright. At least, not bright enough to hold the office of AG. In a job where parsing words is a daily routine, you would assume that Gonzales had a grasp on proper grammar.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:54 amWhat do you expect from an administration whose commander-in-chief has his own well-documented problems with speaking correct or intelligible English?
August 28th, 2007 at 9:55 amAs for Gonzo’s replacement - it’s as simple as ABC…
ANYONE BUT CHERTOFF!!!
August 28th, 2007 at 9:55 amBrian, “me” or “I” comes at the end of any list. So it should be “my family and me”
August 28th, 2007 at 9:56 amAnd I feel a bit of an ass for going on with this
This is one misuse of grammar that always irks me. And many educated people make this mistake, which makes me wonder a bit about our education system. And yes, Clinton did it too — he frequently said “the difference between President Bush and I” during the 1992 campaign, causing me to grit my teeth each time he did so.
It’s as if the default rule to sound grammatically correct is to always say “I” and never say “me” if in doubt. Which, of course, is wrong.
That said — this is excruciatingly small stuff when compared to the rest of what Gonzo and this administration has done. I’m sure TP included this item merely for amusement instead of scandal.

August 28th, 2007 at 9:59 amAce: What are your feelings vis-a-vis the departure of Gonzo during the Congressional hiaitus? Methinks that there is something HUGE afoot here. Hopefully, the dems and the attorneys involved in the scandal got together and did some real digging during all of this free time and this is just the tip of a very large, GOP-encompassing iceberg.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:59 amDo you liberal loonies ever understand that posts like this make you guys look even more absurd then you already are? This guy was a Harvard-educated lawyer, it’s not a huge mistake, it’s irrelevant. You loonies are just out for blood. Leave the guy alone when it comes to a grammatical error. Either way, this guy rose from immense poverty, put himself through the Air Force Academy (briefly), Rice, and Harvard Law–three of America’s best academic institutions. You guys are just desperate for a story. Pathetic. God forbid someone make a typo in their career! I’m sure this shitty liberal website is completely free from all typos.

I think it has to do with surrounding himself with complicity myself. These people have been with him for decades and have gotten his sorry butt out of heap big trouble during that time. It’s like political blackmail. He props them up to the bitter end so they won’t turn him in on their way out of town.
August 28th, 2007 at 10:01 amI find it even more amusing that during his one minute and 41 second farewell speech, he had to consult his written statement 26 times — which is about once every four seconds. Maybe the guy truly DOES have memory problems. Either that, or he just can’t say anything without idiot cards.
August 28th, 2007 at 10:01 amahhhh….don’t you love it, the “compassionate”, “all inclusive”, “tolerant” Liberals making fun of a grammatical error of a Latino.
Can you imagine the uproar from you hypocritical Liberals if it would have been a Conservative making fun of a grammatical error of a Latino serving in a Democratic administration?
Not to mention that TP’s headlines and blog entries are filled with grammatical and spelling errors all the time.
but we all know that Liberals hold others to standards that they aren’t willing to meet first.

When in doubt, just take out the other part of the phrase and you’ll usually know which to use.
Tell my wife and I ? No — leave out “my wife” and the correct pronoun is “me.”
This is the best time for my family and I to begin… No — leave out “my family” and the correct pronoun is “me.”
People are so afraid to say “me” because of the illiterate usage in phrases like “me and him are leaving” that they are afraid to use the word me when it is correct!
This is hardly a topic for TP to discuss, however. Other than pointing out that AGAG is a highly placed person who should know better.

August 28th, 2007 at 10:03 amThis may, indeed, be a “non story”;however, it is illustrative of just how brain dead Gonzo actually is. It’s trivial when compared to his track record of illegal advice regarding signing statements, torture, spying, etc. certainly but even in his parting words, he managed to mangle it.

Latinos don’t vote in blocks like other minorities.
and sorry, Democrats do not have a Latino running for the Presidency, of course unless you tell us all now that Hillary Clinton has some Hispanic in her.
and if you think that Barack Obama is the type of black that knows the ghettos that knows the black plight in America, you are a bigger fool than you have proven to be so far.
Obama might be somewhat black in skin color, but he doesn’t have a clue about the life of a black person in America.
oh and talking about insulting blacks….I am sure you were outraged when the Liberal LA Times called Barack Obama the Democratic party, the Liberals “Magic Negro”, right?

In my red area of my red state, I’m seeing minorities who have good jobs, nice homes, and investments that they want to protect. They want their children to go to good local schools, not the school that needs them to balance their enrollment. These minorities also realize that conservatives, present administration excepted, generally have policies that are most conducive to their needs and desires. ;)

Almight Latin King Nation, most Liberals aren’t educated enough to know that a person that is born in a nation that speaks a Romance language is a true Latino. They are stuck in their racist definition of a Latino. Romanians, French, Italians, Portuguese, Spaniards, all of Latin Americans, these are the true Latinos. Comment by GOP — August 28, 2007 @ 10:18 am
OK, I just can’t resist responding to some of the absurdities here.
First — “won more votes (2004) than any other President in American history”. Is THIS how you are spinning it now? Using this logic, we can also say that in 2004 Dubya had more people voting AGAINST him than any other winning presidential candidate in American history. All this says is that more people VOTED in the 2004 election than in any other presidential election in American history.
Second — No matter how many votes the president got, Congress can still confirm or not confirm his appointees. And any appointee who is merely a bootlicker for the president won’t get any votes purely for that. If America truly wanted Bush to be surrounded by a phalanx of yes-men, then they would have voted for Bush sycophants as their representatives and senators.
Third — Obviously our candidates must be pretty good if the worst thing you can say about Barack Obama is to call him “Barry Hussein” and the worst thing you can say about HC is to call her “fatally flawed” with no explanation why.
August 28th, 2007 at 10:50 amLatino (obviously the word Latino comes from the world Latin which refers to the Latin language spoken by the Romans) is anyone that is born in a country that speaks a Romance Language

The phrase for my family and I is a prepositional phrase. The error occurs in the case of the pronoun. I is the nominative case customarily used as the subject of the sentence or as a predicate nominative following a linking verb.
The pronoun me is in the objective case used as direct object after a transitive verb or as the object of a preposition.
The sentence in question has a prepositional phrase with a compound object: for my family AND me. The objective case of the pronoun is the correct one.

August 28th, 2007 at 11:24 amAs your third grade teacher told you, grammar is important because you must say what you mean in order to mean what you say. For example, the Bush declaration of Katrinia relief listed all of the wrong counties: those in the north and northwest of Louisiana and not Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, etc. which suffered the most harm. How does the White House issue the wrong declaration? By hiring loyalists who are incompetent and inattentive to detail. The critical parts of life are always in the details. Having an Attorney-General who is illiterate, and a staff of the A-G who cannot or will not proof read, is merely symbolic of all that is wrong with this adminstration. By this point, they do not care. And it shows.

There were (and still are) many, many good reasons for not voting for Bush in either of his presidential campaigns. LIberals are the most racist creatures on planet Earth. The sad part is that they believe to be such great open minded, tolerant people.
Tolerance and open minded for Liberals=a Liberal Latino, a Liberal black, a Liberal Asian, a Liberal white, a Liberal Muslim…..you get the picture.
Liberals=racist

It’s so obvious that “why†can’t provide any evidence to back up his own arguments. He pulls his “facts†out of his a$$ and then when challenged, he tells people to look up their own evidence.
This troll is broken — we need a new one, please?

if it helps you to sleep at night to believe your own crap. Don’t confuse me with the writers of TP and the rest of the crazed out left wingers.

“Well, it has to do with our Hispanic heritage, you know our Latin heritage? Latin in a wider sense than what people here say? Latin, they think congas or mariachi hats. (Laughs) But Romanians are Latins, too you know? French are Latins and Italians are Latin. A big portion of Aregentinians let’s say the majority are a mixture of Spanish backgrounds and Italian backgrounds. My parents were Aregentinians; they were kids from Italians or Spanish.”
August 28th, 2007 at 11:43 amGSD,
So Italinas aren’t Latin?
Answer my question smarty.
Why are Spanirds Latin and Italians Anglo when they both speak similair languages and look similiar?
Please explain?
Y0ou can’t because you ignorant and racis.
August 28th, 2007 at 11:44 amGiullinai is not Anglo.
He’s Latin!
Notice how the trolls shy away from threads like Senator Craig, but are in a feeding frenzy over this thread.
August 28th, 2007 at 11:45 amWhy?
Good question.
I feel it’s because while a critique of a Harvard graduate’s grammar (and soon to be ex-Attorney General, for gawds sake)in an official White House resignation letter is justifiable, the trolling sharks can not stand any criticism of this administration, and will defend them until the bitter end.
But when there is no defense of a situation, they hide like the little moles that they are.
Thus the 150+ posts here, yet unusually quiet on the others.
ehhh… i don’t mean to nit pick. especially in this particular thread, but

August 28th, 2007 at 11:45 amThere were (and still are) many, many good reasons for not voting for Bush in either of his presidential campaigns. They have to do with his ideology, his stance on issues, his lack of foreign policy experience, and his lack of knowledge in general. His recreational drug use was small stuff — as long as that was behind him.
Comment by missmolly — August 28, 2007 @ 11:26 am
his lack of foreign policy experience? care to tell me what foreign policy experience Obama has? oh wait, since the Liberal media has not made fun of Obama’s lack of foreign policy experience you don’t know he doesn’t have any foreign policy experience.
Bush’s ideology? millions would vote for him for his ideology. It is YOUR personal believe that his ideology is flawed, since he is not a Liberal.
His lack of knowledge? says who, Airhead America, TP, HuffanPuff Post, Democratic Underground, CNN, MSNBC….please, please!!!
You know, it is amazing how little history Liberals know. I am sure that all of you are aware that when Gen. Ike ran for the Presidency in the 1950s, Liberals used the same “Ike is an Idiot therefore shouldn’t be President” mantra.
For Liberals there hasn’t been a smart Republicans President, ever.
You are using age old political tactics that the Liberal political machine has been using for decades. You are spewing Liberal talking points. try to think on your own.
Liberals also claimed that Reagan, Ike etc would be considered the worst Presidents in american history. Well, Liberals better check since history doesn’t agree with what Liberals said when these were Presidents.

(Don’t believe me ask German-Americans, British-Americans, and Irish-Americans, they think Italians are Latin) We invented the Latin language and Latin culture, the only true Latinos are of majority or full Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese.”

hmmmm…..haven’t you notice that Liberals are also in here? of course not-hypocrite.
as for Sen. Craig, he is just acting like any San Francisco Liberal homosexual would act. Why are you attacking him? attacking him would be attacking any and all Liberal homosexuals in San Francisco.
I am sure that you are aware how Sen. Craig was caught, right?
Homosexuals had been using the airport bathroom to rape other men, to have homosexual sex. You know all the actions you Liberals embrace. Thus, the airport had to creatae a special task for to catch homosexuals in the act in the airport bathroom.
so, once again, why are you attacking Sen. Craig for actions that are embraced by Liberals. Or is homosexuality now wrong when a Republican Sen. does it? hypocrite.

You moron, Rudy Giuliani is for Latin descent, as much as Bill Richardson.
you are just too ignorant and uneducated to understand this.
Listen, just because your Liberal professors didn’t teach you what Latin is and means, it doesn’t mean that King nation is wrong. It means you are wrong.
poor Liberals just lack of education. sad, truly sad.
